I’m writing this post as I am on my way back from a great weekend in Arkansas! We flew out on Friday to spend the weekend celebrating our niece’s first birthday (which is on Tuesday) and her Baptism!
She got to try cake for the first time, and I think she liked it.
We also got to do some running while we were out there (one of my favorite things about the area is the perfect running trail right up the street from my SIL’s house).
Soon it will be back to reality, until I go away again in 4 days! So for now, here is how my week of workouts looked.
Monday: 5.1 miles with hill repeats, core/hip exercises. It was raining, so I wore a hat, but then my headlamp wasn’t bright enough. I ended up wrapping it around my hand which helped a little but obviously the light moved around a lot as I swung my arms!
Tuesday: 3.2 miles easy, CXWORX on YouTube
Wednesday: 5.75 miles with 4 @ 7:30 pace, core work
Thursday: Strength training, 30 minutes yoga
Friday: 4 easy miles plus core and hip exercises. It was 65 degrees and humid! I was sweating in shorts and a long-sleeved T-shirt.
Saturday: 7 miles on the Lake Fayetteville Trail in Arkansas with Rob
Sunday: 4 miles on the trail before heading to the airport
Total: 29.06 miles
Walked: 18.3 Push-ups: 4 days
Yearly Total: 574
It’s nice to get in a Sunday run when traveling, because then I make Monday a rest day. I wouldn’t have been too excited to run back in Baltimore where it’s supposed to be cold and windy.
Do you know how old you were when you first ate sugar/cake?
Do you like to run when you travel, or do you try to relax as much as possible?
Do you wear a headlamp and baseball cap at the same time when it rains? Have you figured out how to do this without the cap blocking the light?
Thanks to Holly and Tricia for hosting the link-up!

she’s so cute with the cake! my first word was supposedly yum yum after being given a cookie so I will assume I was given dessert and cake very young lol. it’s so cold here!
[email protected] says
Hahah that is a great first word! I am really not happy about the cold front moving through here tonight.
Michele @ paleorunningmomma says
I haven’t figured out the headlamp hat thing so it’s one or the other! There are some long runs I need both but I’ll usually go without the hat! Weather looks nice, even if cold!
[email protected] says
I think I would skip the hat too! Better to be able to see, especially since I’ll get wet in the rain anyway.
Kristy @ Southern In Law says
How cute is your niece?! Sounds like you guys had a lovely weekend!
[email protected] says
It was great, thanks!!
Sarah @ BucketListTummy says
Ah, what a fun weekend. That’s so great that they live so close to a trail, major win! I always love to run when I travel because it’s new scenery and a great way for me to check out new places. I’ll usually just stick with a hat when it rains.
[email protected] says
The trail is perfect! Gives us a chance to explore without risking getting lost:)
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
My brother gave me a Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chip Cookie (yes, caps are necessary) before I even left the hospital… so I started early, lol.
[email protected] says
Wow, you were a very lucky baby:)
[email protected] says
Your niece is so adorable! I usually don’t run when I travel, but will try to exercise at the hotel gym or go on long walks. I always wear my visor if it’s raining but have never ran with a headlamp before. I’m so not looking forward to this colder weather that’s about to hit DC–it’s making me miss Cabo!!
[email protected] says
I bet it’s tough to come back from the warmth to the colder temps!
Kristina says
66 and humid actually doesn’t sound too bad to me since we’re back in the mid to upper 80s (and always humid) here. I was looking through my training log from earlier this year last night and realized I definitely took our cooler weather for granted in Jan/Feb!
How do you get pics of you running? Like the one of you and Rob together? I keep seeing so many cool running shots on Instagram and I can’t figure out how everyone gets them! Do you setup your camera on auto somewhere and then just run by it?
[email protected] says
So the one of Rob and I was actually taken by my sister who happened to drive by with my mom when we were finishing up our run! Usually I just set the timer and run by or do a video and then take a picture of a frame. It’s never perfect but sometimes I get lucky!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I just love that dress you wore for the baptism!
I like to run when I travel–I like exploring new places. But I don’t run in a baseball cap, so I’ve never had the headlamp issue!
[email protected] says
Thank you! I only run in a baseball cap when it rains, so I don’t usually run into this problem.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Okay, not you are just PURPOSEFULLY messing with us with those uneven mileage numbers right? Soon you will be doing 15.6 push ups per day. Just kidding. 🙂
[email protected] says
Haha! I don’t even pay attention and then I just enter them from my excel sheet at the end of the week.
Lauren says
When I travel I like to at least get one or two runs in but it’s always no pressure. I know sometimes food and drink or late nights are involved and sleeping in is a luxury which is part of the vacation relaxation.
[email protected] says
So true! I think for me it depends on the type of vacation. Last weekend we ate pretty well and went to bed early so I was more than ready for a run each morning.
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
Your niece is so precious! I like to run when traveling but usually end up running on the treadmill early before the day gets going. I’m not used to city running (East Seattle is all paved, gravel, or dirt trails), so the treadmill just feels safer on travel if I’m in an urban area.
[email protected] says
City running can definitely be tricky if you’re not familiar with the area. The trail in Arkansas is perfect because it’s a paved 6 mile loop!
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
Your niece is adorable! I struggle with how to handle a headlamp and hat when it’s raining too. It’s a bit awkward, but I put my headlamp on under the hat so that it sits high on my forehead and then push the hat up a bit. Not perfect, but I’ve also tried wrapping it around my hand and also wearing it like a necklace and those didn’t work so well. The challenges of early morning, rainy runs!
[email protected] says
Maybe I will try putting my headlamp under my hat next time! Thanks for the idea!
Suzy says
I haven’t used a headlamp in years but I remember having the same problem as I used to always wear a hat when running so it messed me up when I needed the light. Great job on that week last week. This won’t come as a surprise to you but I run when I’m on vacation! Running is FUN! So taking a break from it would be very sad. We booked a Mexico trip and I’ll be hitting the treadmill every morning before the Coronas! Wahoo!
[email protected] says
I agree that running is fun and vacation would not be as good without it!!
Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says
So adorable with that cake! Which with the pink and sprinkles is still how I like my birthday cake 🙂
[email protected] says
I think everyone was a little jealous of her cake:)
Marcia says
Aw she is SO cute! What a sweet occasion. I love the look on kids’ faces when they discover cake. Your dress is beautiful!
[email protected] says
Thank you! I know, it was so fun to watch her try the cake. She was so careful at first and then she realized how good it was and just dug in!
Lesley says
I don’t know when my parents first gave me cake, but my first adult food was chocolate pudding 😀
[email protected] says
I’m sure you loved it!
Meredith says
Where is your adorable dress from in the first photo? I love it!
[email protected] says
Thank you! I got it at The Loft last spring.
Rachael @ Catch Me if You Can says
another travel run! I love running when I travel, best way to see a city in my opinion. 65 and humind…sounds like a typical spring day to me lol. enjoy those cold temps while you can its going to be such a hot summer i dont even want to think about it
[email protected] says
I know, however I am not happy that its gonna be back in the 20s tonight!
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Lisa, your niece is just beautiful! I love this picture of yall! I would also say she loves cake too! Sounds like a great weekend with family and I love a new running route so I will try and run when I’m in new places. Now that I’m streaking, I have a feeling I’m gonna be running in a lot of new places over the next few months! As always thanks for linking up! I’m so impressed you got this done while traveling, that is hard for me! Safe travels back home!
[email protected] says
Thank you for all your kind words! Running is always fun when you get to explore, I’m sure you will see some great places during your running streak!
Courtney @ Running For Cupcakes says
Happy one year to your niece! I’m guessing I started young with the cake/sugar because of my major sweet tooth! I try to run or get some kind of exercise in when I’m traveling. I think running is the most convenient while traveling if you don’t have a gym.
[email protected] says
I agree that running is such a convenient way to exercise when traveling. It always feels good to get a little workout in!
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
Nice work with the 4 at 7:30 pace! Both of my girls had a little bit of sugar at their 1st party, but no more until they were 2. I know my mom was not that strict. She has ‘ice cream’ listed as one of my favorite foods at 12 months!
[email protected] says
I’m sure I had alot of sugar at a young age too! I don’t think people realized or cared back then that it wasn’t exactly healthy:)
Sam @ See Sam Run says
Great week! It’s so great you have a place you love to run when you travel. When I went on vacation last summer, running around town was my favorite thing.
[email protected] says
It’s always nice to know there is a place to run when we got there! Plus its a nice change from our typical routes around Baltimore.
Ana says
Pretty solid week of training here! good job !
I used a hat with a headlamp once, but it was a short rim hat. Also, my headlap tilts up, so I had no problems with visibility.
I don’t remember the first time I had sugar, but there is a picture of me hogging a bottle of Coke around the age of 3, a habit that took me about 30 years to give up.
[email protected] says
Hmmm my headlamp tilts too, maybe I need to play around with it when I wear a hat!
[email protected] says
Sounds like a great wkend. I always like to run in different areas when I go away. Makes the run go so much quicker. Your niece is adorable! I bet that was so fun watching her dive into her first bite of sugar.
[email protected] says
It was so fun seeing her try cake for the first time! And running while away is always a great way to explore someplace new.
Charissa says
Great job with the vacation trail running! When I go on vacation, I usually have to run alone and I actually hate exploring a new area alone. I like to stick to what I know unless I’ve got company. I wish I was more of a risk-taker but it’ll be awhile before that habit changes.
[email protected] says
Even though Rob and I don’t really run together at home it’s nice that I have someone to run with when we are away! It also makes me a little nervous to run in places I am not familiar with by myself.

Your niece is so cute! Love reading your blog <3

Glad you enjoyed your visit to Fayetteville. My husband and I live near Fayetteville – about 30-40 minutes north (Hello, home of Walmart?) 🙂

Oh nice! Fayetteville is such a great place. Thanks for reading and commenting!
