Thinking about Races, Groceries, and Rain Records

We made it to Thursday! I am heading to a wedding tomorrow, so it’s my last workday of the week. I figured it’s been a while since I wrote a thinking out loud post so today seemed like a good day to do that. I’ll start by sharing what I’ve been thinking about races. Ever since I ran those two races in April I have been trying to squeeze in more. My weekends have been limited but I really want to run something Memorial Day weekend. I’m thinking 5k or 10k but not sure where. Then I have a 10 miler on June 4th.

thinking about races this spring

I am also planning to run a 5k race the weekend of June 19th. (After getting back from another wedding the day before- so I have no PR expectations whatsoever). This race is to raise money for a local hospital (GBMC) where my friend’s twin babies were in the NICU last June. Local runners should consider signing up or non-locals can donate to support a great cause!

As you may notice, my spring weekends continue to be hectic. One thing that has helped a ton is getting our groceries delivered. We did a free 30 day trial of Amazon Fresh. So far it’s been great! We can order on Friday afternoon and get our groceries delivered on Saturday morning. They will even package them to stay cold so they can leave them on your doorstep if you are not home at delivery time. Not sure if we will continue using this when our free trial is over, but it’s very tempting.

Is this not the strangest spring ever? Actually I just think all of 2016 has been wacky. We got all those warm days in the winter and now it’s May but feels like March. Apparently Baltimore almost broke some record of the longest streak of rain since 1935. According to this article, we hit 14 consecutive days of rain and the record is 15 days. However, it was literally just a “pause” in our streak because after the 15 days was over we had like one day without rain and then it was back again.

I’ve gotten more use of my rain jacket and umbrella this year than ever before!

rain

Last Saturday I ran in shorts and a tank top, and then Sunday I was in capris and a long-sleeved 1/2 zip. Our community pool is supposed to open next week and I’m still wearing a jacket to work most days! We have even seen lows in the 30s some mornings.

it is so cold for spring! except for last Saturday like you said, it’s really cold! I am planning to run a 10 mile race the sunday of memorial day but didn’t register yet. still waiting to see the weather lol. if it’s going to run or suddenly be 90 degrees, I am not doing it. other than that, maybe a 4 mile race july 4th and then nothing till the fall I suppose!

I am sort of waiting to see the weather for next weekend too. My options are shorter distances but still- I’d rather not race in any extreme weather conditions!

    Thanks for the love!

Maybe I’ll do the 10 miler?!

You definitely should! It’s not like you need to train for these races or anything:) And then we can hang out with the kids in the field after!

After drew was born I started getting groceries delivered and it was hard to give it up when he was a little older! I did though, because at some point he was happy sitting in the cart and it was an activity again. Now that I have less time though it would really be nice to get delivery again! And totally agree with the weather, I think next week looks hot though, maybe for good!

I think if I could grocery shop during the week it would be a little easier, but the weekends feel so short as it is! It’s been really nice to have one less thing to worry about.

Cannot do pistol squats. Have never been able to. I admire anyone who can! There are times with grocery delivery would be awesome, but I would totally miss my grocery store runs 😀

I am happy enough with an occasional trip to Fresh Market but other than that I have no desire to do my own shopping!

Hahaha noooo summer running I’m NOT ready for you!

I would hate dealing with so much rain though. After what felt like months without rain it has rained twice over the last week and I’m totally over it. I hate getting caught in the rain!

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:40 am

It’s pouring here today and it is so hard to get motivated to get outside to run! Whenever summer weather does come it’s gonna be really hard to adjust after so many months running in 40-50 degree weather.

I’ve never tried a grocery delivery service, but it honestly sounds like a dream. I used to love going in and browsing all the aisles, but these days I just want to get in and out as fast as possible 😆 And feel free to send some of that rain our way! It’s so crazy dry here and we could really use a week or two of rainy days.

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:41 am

Oh I sure wish we could send you some of this rain! It’s pouring here today, and I am pretty sure there are plenty of places that need this rain more than us.

So crazy how different your weather can be, hard to plan for! Amazon Fresh sounds awesome – how have I not heard of that? It’s crazy you can order Friday and get them the next day!

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:42 am

I’m not sure if Amazon Fresh is available everywhere, but its really great! We ended up paying for the service after our trial ended and the price includes the Prime membership, which we always get anyway. It makes me feel kind of lazy, but it saves so much time and stress!

This is the third straight morning we’ve had rain, and I really need to invest in some rain boots. Of course, if I do, that’ll be that for the rain. I’m not sure what’s supposed to be normal in Texas because every spring I’ve been here has been different.

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:43 am

I could have definitely used some rain boots over the past month. I have even been wearing my winter boots sometimes because its been so chilly and rainy!

Omg pistol squats are impossible!! I have my St. Michaels half this Saturday (of course it’s supposed to rain all freaking day), then nothing planned after that. I’d like to do the Army 10 miler if I can get in!

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:43 am

I hope you had a great race! The Army 10 miler would be great to do. I still need to figure out my fall plans but maybe I’ll look into that!

This weather is crazy! It’s been nicer in NH than down here some days. I think spring/summer will slap us in the face next week, though.
I’ve been hearing alot about the MCVET races the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. There’s a 5K, 10K and an option to do both! I may do one depending on the time since I’m going to Brew in the Zoo that afternoon!

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:44 am

I was looking into the MCVET races! I was hoping to do a Saturday race, but I still can’t decide.

I’ve never tried pistol squats but they look SO HARD. Gah. What is with your weather?!?!?! I hope it’s okay for you guys this weekend. Have a good trip!

      May 22, 2016 at 5:46 am

We got lucky with Friday’s weather (it was perfect for a wedding) but yesterday and today are cold and rainy. It’s tough to get motivated to run when you hear the rain pouring down outside (which is happening right now!)

  13. Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says

    May 19, 2016 at 10:20 am

We hit our record for rain so early that it could have stopped in March to break the record – but of course it didn’t. I had a couple summer races lined up but who knows now what I’m actually end up doing. And pistol squats are so hard!!

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:47 am

Whenever I think about how much rain we have had I think that this is probably what its like to live in Seattle! Not sure how you deal with so many days of rain over the winter months.

  14. Denise says

    May 19, 2016 at 12:01 pm

This is definitely the strangest spring here in the Midwest as well! We have also had a lot of rain, and it’s been unseasonably cool–although I don’t really mind because I know we’ll get the full-on summer heat and humidity soon enough. 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:48 am

I keep saying the same thing and then wonder if the weather will ever actually warm up! We are forecasted for 80 degrees and sun on Wednesday so I am keeping my fingers crossed!

  15. Kathleen says

Have fun at your weddings and upcoming spring races. That end of spring/early summer transition is so busy, but so special and fun. Also, props on the single leg squats and deadlifts, you’re probably way ahead of most runners (myself totally included). And yes, this weather has absolutely crazy, even harder to plan for than usual! Like, 75 on Christmas and 40 today? I can’t.
    Have a good weekend!

I feel you on the weird weather. We’re in Autumn/Fall at the moment and it’s constantly chopping and changing between warm and cold so I never know what to wear in the mornings!

We’ve had groceries delivered a couple of times, however, I feel like I’m way too fussy when it comes to picking produce to do it all the time!

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:51 am

I have actually found that the produce that’s been picked out for us has been great! Otherwise I could totally see wanting to go and do it myself. I am also struggling every day with wha to wear in the mornings. I haven’t been able to wear any of my summer clothes yet but I already packed away all my warmer winter stuff!

  17. [email protected] says

    May 20, 2016 at 10:09 am

Sometimes it’s nice to run races just for fun and have no goal time or racing for a PR. I have looked into those Delbert services before but never heard of the Amazon. It would eliminate the stress going grocery shopping. I swear I always get much more than I expect to get each time.

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:51 am

Online grocery shopping definitely reduces those in-store impulse buys!

It’s been a crummy month here too! Ever since we got back from Big Sur, the weather has been cold and rainy. Until Thursday, that is. The tides have turned. Hopefully things will get better by you too!

    • [email protected] says

      May 22, 2016 at 5:36 pm

I hope so! It’s been raining all day today and is so depressing. But there is sun and warmer weather in the forecast later this week- fingers crossed!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
