Summer Vacation Week 2016

Well just like that, my vacation week is over and so is July. My workouts definitely took a backseat last week, so I’ll recap the week in general rather than just focusing on my workouts. It was one of those weeks where you don’t even really know what day it is, so we’ll see how well I even remember what happened! In case you missed it, last week while I was away Sam wrote a guest post about running shoe myths and Suzy wrote about running and anxiety. Thanks again ladies for helping out while I was away! Hopefully I will be back to my normal blogging routine soon enough.

Summer Vacation Week 2016

Last Saturday morning Rob and I drove to the Jersey shore to meet my parents for a few days. We have been going to the same place there for about 20 years now. From Saturday through Wednesday we were there with my parents, my sister, and her boyfriend.

vacation dinner

Mornings were spent running on the beach, days were spent laying in the sun, and then at night we enjoyed some drinks and went out for dinner.

beach running

I ran about 30 minutes on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and did some strength training and my PT exercises as well.

On Wednesday morning we made the drive back to Baltimore and then spent the day cleaning, running errands, and doing laundry. You know, the most fun way to get back from a vacation.

drive home

I ended up taking off work on Thursday and Friday because Rob’s family was planning a visit. They were getting in on Thursday afternoon so I wanted to have some time to prepare for their visit and do some food prep stuff. Unfortunately, his sisters’ family’s flight was really delayed so they didn’t get in until after 10pm. Our niece had a rough day but was a trooper!

On Friday was had some stuff going on around the house with our deck (which is thisclose to being done…) but did sneak away for bit to go to the pool. We were the only ones there, which was great, but they didn’t let us bring any types of floating devices in the water. Finley got bored with being held in the water quickly and preferred to run around the pool area, so we didn’t stay for too long.

pool

We were able to spend some time on the deck Friday afternoon and then headed out for dinner.

On Saturday morning I did a quick yoga video because I knew I would be on my feet quite a bit later that day at the zoo. Apparently 15 months old is still a bit too young to really appreciate seeing the animals. She was more into picking leaves up off the ground than seeing giraffes and elephants. The rest of us were jealous that she got to be pushed around in a stroller because it was HOT! So of course we were all exhausted after a few hours there and spent the afternoon back at the house relaxing.

zoo

My family came over in the evening for dinner, and at one point there was 11 of us- the most we have ever had at our house. We got to spend about 5 minutes on the deck until the thunderstorms rolled in. Not exactly great timing and we only have a table for 4 inside the house.

Of course Finley was the star of the show as usual.

saturday

Everyone left on Sunday, and Rob and I are attempting to get back to our regular routine. It was nice to not really care about working out but I do miss it. It will also be good to get back to our regular eating habits and not drink wine every single day.

What did I miss last week? How have your workouts been going?

Have you taken a vacation this summer? Did you stay at home or travel?

How do you do with having lots of visitors at your house?

Thanks to Holly and Tricia for hosting the Weekly Wrap!

isn’t it funny how we love vacation yet also look forward to regular routine and eating our regular meals. I am the same way! I am glad you had such a nice vacation week. we went away to Hershey earlier this summer, now my son is away at camp but maybe when he gets back we will go somewhere for a night or two before school starts. I sort of thought about it but didn’t plan it yet. we shall see!

That would be great if you could get away for a few more days this summer!

I love my vacations, I love getting back to my routine. I love having visitors, I love when they are gone. Sometimes, I even can’t wait for them to go, but then I miss them immediately!
    Basically, I’m impossible!

Haha yep I totally get it. I loved having everyone visit but I also appreciate when things get back to normal.

Sounds like such a nice vacation. It really is a breath of fresh air to get away and not focus on the workouts, but after vacation, I’m also excited to get back into a workout routine!

Definitely! It feels good to be back to my normal schedule.

Looks like such a fun vacation with family! I love vacations and the break they provide from routine, but then I get excited to get back into normal schedules and eating. Without those breaks routine would be much more difficult.

I do love taking vacations but I’m always excited to get back to a normal schedule. Even after 4 days away this weekend, I’m looking forward to eating a salad tonight and going to sleep in my own “bed.” It sounds like you had a great vacation filled with tons of family time- that’s the best way to do it 🙂

While indulging is fun, its definitely nice to get back to normal. I start to feel off after a few days of being out of my regular routine.

I haven’t taken a vacation yet, but I’ll be in DC Sunday through Wednesday, then I’m doing a stay-cation Thursday and Friday to finish the week. I need a break from work, and I’m making appointments for those stay-cation days so I don’t have to do them later. I’m trying to find a new dentist, which isn’t exciting at all.

      August 1, 2016 at 7:31 pm

A stay-cation sounds like fun! I sometimes do those in the winter but I think summer is a great time. I hate dealing with appointments!

I loveeee weekends at the Jersey shore. I had one last weekend for a couple days in AC! I think mostly travelling can be exhausting, and I always love sleeping in my own bed.

      August 1, 2016 at 7:33 pm

It seems like everyone in Maryland goes to Ocean City or Delaware beaches, but I have always gone to New Jersey and we love it there! Agreed that traveling is definitely exhausting.

Yeah, the zoo is tricky with toddlers. You gotta wait until they hit the magic age where they actually understand what they’re looking at! And why are zoos SO HOT?!?! I swear it’s hotter at a zoo than anywhere else!

      August 1, 2016 at 7:34 pm

We were thinking about bringing her to Disney in January but decided its still a little too early. I think she will appreciate it much more in another couple of years! And yes, it was definitely hotter there than anywhere else I think!

It sounds like you had a wonderful vacation and time with family. I need to find time to hit the pool, we have a city pool pretty closeby that has our names on it! I so envy you running on the beach, I haven’t been all summer!

I hope you can get to the pool soon, or to the beach for a run!

I do pretty good in staying in a routine with beach trips. It’s other types of vacations, that involve more extensive travel, that seem to derail me. I get a little frazzled when I have a large crowd to entertain. I tend to overthink and second guess everything. I prefer just a few people at once. I hope your foot is doing much better. Thanks for linking, Lisa!

I did well with workouts until we got back from the beach. I think having everyone visiting just threw me off! The foot is mostly better, but still not 100%. Thanks for hosting the link up!

No summer vacations yet but looking forward to a short one this autumn. Looks like a great week for you with both sides of the family! I would have thought any age kids liked to see zoo animals, but shows what I know about it 🙂

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 1, 2016 at 7:37 pm

Yea in general she likes animals but I don’t think she realized there was a difference between seeing animals in real life vs a toy or on tv.

I always feel like my workouts take a backseat as well when I vacation and/or visit family. But it is always worth it. Plus it has been so hot here anyways. It’s hard to get it in. I went to the lake house this wk with family and we have been having so much fun.

I’ve had lots of practice with traveling and sticking to a route. It is very challenging at times but others it’s just a way of life.
There is nothing more I love than being away, traveling and seeing new things but I do like the steady routine of being home too. So I guess you could say I want my cake and eat it too!

You have definitely gotten good at traveling while also keeping up with your routine!

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. Feeling like I’m in a good place with 6 weeks to go! How was your run today? #run #marathontraining #longrun
And just like that September is over…but most of And just like that September is over…but most of it still felt like August. This month I ran 175 miles, my highest since last November. The long runs are getting longer, and I’m slowly feeling like my fitness is building. I can’t believe that by the time October is over I’ll be getting ready to taper for the marathon! Let’s hope October brings lots of good miles and maybe some cooler weather. Was September a good month of running for you? #september #marathontraining #running

15 mile long run workout this morning! Honestly, e 15 mile long run workout this morning! Honestly, every step of this felt challenging, so I’m pretty happy that I still hit my paces. I’m going to blame it on the humidity. WHY is it still so warm and humid when it’s almost October 😩🥵 I made the mistake of leaving my hair in a ponytail so of course it was a tangled mess by the time I was done. When will I learn? Just glad I got this done to wrap up week 9 of @richmondmarathon training! Is it still humid where you are? #run #marathontraining #richmondmarathon #longrun
