Catching My Breath

After a busy week, I felt like I spent the weekend catching my breath. We got back from Denver on Sunday and jumped right into the week. Of course work was busy after being out for a few days the week before, plus I had training for 3 days (which meant falling even more behind on my regular work and trying to play catch-up in the evenings). On Friday we had a wedding to go to. It was in Maryland but about 2 hours away so we stayed overnight. In a way it was good that it was on Friday so we had the rest of the weekend to regroup.

On Friday night I went to sleep at 11:30 (really late for me) and slept in until 6:30. After driving back home I ended up taking a 4.5 hour nap. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to sleep on Saturday night, but nope. I managed to sleep for 10 hours. Hopefully I’m not slipping back into my first trimester habits and was just exhausted from traveling and not getting enough sleep during the week.

I went into the week without a plan but ended up having some really good runs and higher mileage than I would have expected.

Weekly Recap: Catching My Breath

Monday: 5 miles + mobility

It was hard getting back into the swing of things after being on vacation. I knew a run would be the best way to start out the week.

monday 5 miles

Tuesday: Strength training + 5 miles

This started out my last week of Phase 8 of my strength training plan. It’s getting harder but still feels good to get in these kinds of workouts! Then I did 5 miles on the treadmill.

tuesday strength and run

Wednesday: 7 mile fartlek run

I went back to my usual fartlek run and added on some 1 minute intervals at the end:

1 mile warm-up
2,3,4,5,4,3,2 minutes hard with 2 minute recovery in between each
5 x 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy
Cool down to 7 miles

wednesday fartlek run

My pace was a little slower than the past few times I did this workout, but the effort was still there.

Thursday: Strength training +4 miles

I finished up Phase 8 and then jumped on the treadmill for 4 miles.

strength training

Friday: 9 miles

I was thinking about doing my long run this day because of being away Friday night and the potential for rain on Sunday. On Friday morning I couldn’t sleep so I headed out a little before 5 am. I just kind of zoned out and decided it would be a good day for a long run. Initially I was thinking of doing 6-7 but the more I ran the more I wanted to keep going, so I ended up doing 9. (I only stopped because it was time to get ready for work!)

9 miles friday

Saturday: Rest day

As I said, there was lots of sleep this day!

Sunday: 5 miles

It was cooler out (60 degrees!) but raining. I was still determined to run outside. Luckily the rain wasn’t too heavy, although it did pick up throughout my run. I managed to hit some paces that I haven’t seen since the winter!

Week 27

I think I’m done traveling for a while now, and next week will be a low-key weekend at home. I’m starting to feel stressed about all the things I need to get done in the next 3 months, and I feel like there’s not enough time to do it all!

Yesterday I hit 27 weeks. Running is still feeling good but everything else feels harder. How is it that I can get so winded walking up the stairs or even just getting off the couch but I can run 9 miles and keep my breathing under control the whole time? The heartburn has been mostly better with the Zantac but will still hit me once in a while.

27 weeks

Another challenge has been staying hydrated enough for my runs without feeling like I need to stop to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes. It’s nice to be able to run on the treadmill so I can keep my water bottle with me and also have the bathroom 5 feet away. When I run outside I bring water for longer runs and stay close to home. Most of the time it’s just the bouncing that makes my bladder feel like it’s full, but if I distract myself for a few minutes the feeling goes away.

I can’t believe the weather is finally starting to cool off. Although, of course we are getting a ton of rain. How about some nice cooler, sunny fall days? I’m sure that’s too much to ask for. I’m still on the lookout for a race, but I have no idea if or when that will happen.

Do you ever spend the whole weekend resting/sleeping after a busy week?
Has it started to cool off where you live?
Have you ever gone out for a long run and not wanted to stop running?

I had such a busy week last week and basically spent yesterday afternoon lying around waiting to go to bed! A great week for you, well done.

You are still running so strong; I was so inactive during my pregnancies so I am really impressed and inspired. To answer one of your questions, I actually spent this weekend doing nothing but relaxing and resting. The kids were with their grandparents so after my 16 km Run on Saturday, I basically slumped on the couch and watched reruns of everything. After a crazy few weeks at work, it felt AMAZING.

I love weekends like that! I haven’t had one in way too long (well, other than this past Saturday).

You are amazing to be doing all you do at 27 weeks. I know I sound like a broken record but it’s true. It has finally cooled off here too and it feels amazing. Although Vancouver was cooler…and more amazing. 😀

I feel you on the evening catchup – that was my life last week and meant no blog catch up either.
Lately I’ve been in a place of “don’t wanna” for miles 1-2 and run forever in 3-5. Kind of loving it. You look amazing for 27 weeks!

You are doing such a great job with all of your daily workouts! Even though I’m not pregnant (ha! that train has left the station LOL), I do sometimes find myself winded just running up a flight of stairs or walking out to the mail box LOL What is up with that??? I can run 100 flights of stairs (almost) nonstop …how is it that sometimes ONE flight can feel so taxing?

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      September 25, 2018 at 4:48 am

Yes, I know! Even before I was pregnant walking up a flight of stairs seemed to be harder to me than running 10 miles, lol.

Thank you! Usually I can’t/don’t run 6 days a week so this is different even for me.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
