Hello and Happy New Year! I can’t believe Christmas has come and gone and it’s now 2018. Last week was kind of a blur, between the holidays, traveling, and getting sick. I still got in a lot of workouts somehow. I could have done without the frigid temperatures though! (Seriously, will this cold front ever end?)
Last week started out with a windy Christmas run around the neighborhood. Then, I ran on the treadmill at the hotel gym in Michigan for 2 days. (I am always so grateful for a treadmill there- it’s always so cold and icy!) I came back on Wednesday and started feeling sick the day we came back. On Thursday and Friday I could barely move from the couch, but felt good enough to run again over the weekend. It certainly wasn’t ideal to be running outside in temps below 20 degrees when you’re just getting over being sick, but I guess I’m stubborn. (It would be great if our treadmill could be here already!!)
Monday: 3.1 miles
The wind was so intimidating (just hearing it from inside the house) but Rob and I bundled up and headed out for a 5k around the neighborhood. Decked in our green compression socks, I’m sure the neighbors thought we were crazy!
Tuesday: 5 miles
An easy run on the treadmill. I was watching the news and saw that the temperature was something like -2 with a windchill of -15 (ugh)
Wednesday: 6.1 miles
Another easy treadmill run. I seem to always have the gym there to myself which is nice.
Thursday: 45 minutes spin bike
I managed to get myself onto the bike for 45 minutes of really easy cross training, but I knew that I was not in good shape. I had all these chores I wanted to get done while I was off from work but just didn’t have the energy. I managed to clean out the basement workout area and then spent the rest of the day on the couch.
Friday: Rest
I woke up feeling even worse so called it a rest day. I think I took about 4 hours worth of naps.
Saturday: 7 miles
When I woke up I felt better, and really wanted to get out for a run. It was snowing and around 20 degrees. I had to talk myself into 3 miles but once I got to 3 I convinced myself to keep going. I felt like once I was out there I might as well get some decent miles in.
Sunday: 9.4 miles
I felt about the same as the day before but it was a struggle to get myself out the door. There were just SO many layers. The real feel was 2 degrees but it was only really bad when I was running into the wind. At certain points I felt like my legs were going numb. If this weather continues I’m going to need to invest in even warmer running gear.
Total: 30.6 miles
I managed to finish off December with 100 miles! My yearly mileage is 606, so it’s pretty crazy that 100 of those miles were just this month.
Also, you may have noticed that I completely slacked on my strength training this week. There was just too much going on, so by Friday I just decided to skip it this week and get back on track next week.

How were your workouts over the holiday week?
Do you get sick from traveling in the winter?
Are you enjoying the cold temps or totally over winter already?
Sarah @ Bucket List Tummy says
100 miles for December is impressive, given the wind and weather! The wind is the worst part of winter running.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It really is! I am excited to eventually have a treadmill so I can stay indoors on some of these super cold days.
Lesley says
It wasn’t from traveling, but I got sick before my time off for Christmas. That certainly wasn’t what I’d planned, but there’s something going around. At least it didn’t stick around for long.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Yea it seems like so many people have gotten sick lately!
Laura says
Great mileage this week! Yes- it feels like the cold will never end. I hope this isn’t a sign of the kind of winter we are going to have!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I know right! This cold snap feels like it’s never ending.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Congrats on your mileage for December! Is there anywhere in the country that isn’t freezing cold? It’s been intense out there, kudos to you, especially on those long runs! I’m definitely going to need to invest in some thicker gloves and socks for the winter!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I have been wearing so many layers and it makes it hard to move! I think I need some fleeced lines tights if this weather continues.
Erinn says
I can’t believe you ran 7 miles and then 9+ the next day! My legs would’ve quit in protest 😉
I finally managed a double digit run on Saturday – super proud of myself! It was a lot tougher mentally than physically…but isn’t that why running is so great?!
Happy New Year!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Congrats on your run! Im not sure what got into me with all the miles the past few weeks. I think I just get excited to have time off work and more time to run.
Kim G says
I’m sorry that you were sick this week but glad to hear that you are feeling better. I know this week is still super cold but hopefully the following week will be better!
Great job on hitting 100 miles for December!
Here’s to a great 2018!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! I would welcome warmer temps and day now!
Kimberly Hatting says
Oh, I am totally OVER with the winter. I can handle the cold, but the past 10 days or so have been brutal. If I had not been on a mission to finish all of my streak runs outside, I probably would have waved the white flag and bailed LOL
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
You were so dedicated to your run streak! I think the only way I was able to get out there was taking it one day/mile at a time. If I knew I needed to get out there every day I would have had a harder time with it I think!
lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I bet you can not wait for your treadmill to come! Great job getting out and bearing the cold!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I seriously cant wait! We are going to call tomorrow and see whats going on- we tried calling on Friday and no one was picking up.
Jessie says
A treadmill was one of the best purchases my husband and I made for our house (a house of two runners). You will love yours. But great job getting out and running outside! Tough!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! I cant wait to have the treadmill. It would have been really nice to have it the past few days when it was so cold!
Karen Bayne says
You had a amazing December!
I agree once you bundle up and get going it motivates you to make it worth while. You did awesome in the bitter cold…hopefully this extreme will let up soon and we can get back to normal cold lol
Happy New Year!!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thank you! I am ready for this bitter cold to go away…I feel like it’s never ending! Happy New Year to you as well!
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
Congrats on 100 miles for December! I am enjoying winter weather and hoping it stays cold – colder winters out here mean more sun and less rain, plus better snow in the mountains. Although we are visiting family this week and it’s supposed to be as cold as the single digits, so that will be interesting!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I don’t mind the cold too much but the temps we have had lately have just been too much. Day after day of single digits is starting to get to me!
HoHo Runs says
I hope you are feeling better! 100 miles is very impressive for the month of December. It is actually cold here…teens and twenties…which is really cold for us, especially after our mild winter last year. It is still so much easier to breathe in than in those awful humid summers months. But, we don’t have to contend with ice or snow like you do. Happy New Year and thanks for linking.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It seems like it is colder than usual everywhere! I guess we are making up for the mild winter we had last year.
