Double Digits and Chafing

Isn’t it supposed to be October? Where did the nice fall temps from last weekend go? This weekend I managed to run my first double-digit run of the year. The only bad thing about it was the chafing. I was not prepared for the humidity even though I knew it would be in the 60s. While annoying (and painful) if that was the only bad thing about my first long run in forever, I’ll take it.

For the first time in 2017, I completed a double digit run. Unfortunately it was super humid and I ended up with lots of chafing! Otherwise, it was a great week of workouts. Click post to read more.

Monday: 4 mile fartlek run

This is how this run went down: 10 minutes easy, 4 minutes hard, 3 minutes easy, 3 minutes hard, 2 minutes easy, 2 minutes hard, 1 minute easy, 1 minute hard, 10 minute cool down

Monday Fartlek Run

Tuesday: Strength training

I went to the gym for this workout to use heavier weights. It was really just for one exercise so I’m not sure if I will continue going on strength training days or just do those workouts from home.

Tuesday Gym Workout

Wednesday: 3.1 miles

Just an easy 5k. I find that my mid-week run is aways a struggle, probably because I’m tired and stressed from work. Mondays and Saturdays are always so much better!

Wednesday easy run

Thursday: Strength training

Another strength training workout, this time at home. I wasn’t quite as sore from the hamstring curls on the stability ball this week!

Strength training

Friday: 45 minutes spinning, glutes and core

I actually made this workout really productive by E-mailing myself a to-do list on my iPad as I was on the spin bike. Usually when i work out, I think of things I need to do in my head and then forget to write them down.

Spinning

Saturday: 10 miles

I’m not quite sure how I ended up running 10 miles. Maybe it wasn’t the smartest decision but it felt right at the time. It was one of those runs where I just kept going. Other than the humidity, chafing, and soaked/knotty hair, it was a great run!

10 miles

Sunday: Rest

I definitely needed a rest day after my hardest week of workouts in a while!

How many times do I need to suffer from chafing before I learn to always wear body glide? I just didn’t think that would be an issue in October. Lesson learned once again!

[Tweet “Finally a double-digit run, but with some chafing to go along with it! @milebymilerun #weeklywrap #runchat”]

Was it humid this weekend where you live?
Do you ever “accidentally’ run longer than you intended?
Do you make to-do lists in your head awhile you are running?

it has been so hot and humid here again for days! when will it end?! I don’t want winter but I would appreciate the 40’s and 50’s in the morning for running for sure.

It was a super humid weekend in NC! I was bummed because it had been cool prior to Saturday. I went outside to walk my dog and I was wearing a sweater… I got so steamy!

I am constantly surprised by how warm it is when I go outside! I keep thinking fall is right around the corner, an then summer just lingers.

I always make to do lists in my head when I am no where near a writing utensil and then forget half the things I need to do!

What kind of spin bike do you have? I’ve been thinking about buying one but I don’t know what to look for.

The bike I have is the Sunny Health & Fitness Indoor Cycle Trainer 49 lb. Flywheel. Its been great and we have had it for just about a year now!

It was ridiculously humid over the weekend. I felt so bad for everyone running races because gills would have been better. Great job on the 10 miler but UGH! to the chafing.

Wow way to bang out 10! It was super humid here Saturday but thankfully it all blew out in time for the marathon. It’s a beautifully crisp 48 degrees here right now but supposed to hit 80 later. I swear the seasons are pushing later. Kids should go to school until July 1 and be off until October 1.

Im glad the marathoners didnt have to deal with that humidity! I was just saying the other day how much the seasons are changing. So strange!

I often make to-do lists in my head while running…and I have learned that if I “number the items,” I’m more likely to remember them (remember how quantity of items helps me to eventually remember what each item was LOL)

      October 9, 2017 at 7:28 pm

WHOOT for the 10 miler! Welcome back to double digits. TS Nate brought in some even more oppressive humidity that hasn’t left yet. I actually ran longer than planned today, but the body felt good so I kept at it. Trail Toes works wonders for chafing. Yes, I’m a broken record but I love that product. Thanks for linking!

Here in California, we luckily doesn’t deal with too much humidity… thank goodness. That doesn’t mean I don’t sweat in 100+F… haha.

So happy you were back to double digits… I definitely “accidentally” run longer than I intended. I love going by how I feel.
And yes to the to-do list… I do so much thinking on my long runs 🙂

Im sure 100 degrees is really tough for running! It usually doesnt get quite that hot around here. But the humidity is bad pretty much all summer.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
