February Runfessions

You probably know the drill by now: It’s the last Friday of the month which means it’s time for February Runfessions. It’s the perfect chance to get all those running confessions off your chest!

This month I'm runfessing about winter, outdoor running, running shoes, and more! Click post to read all about my running confessions for February. #running #runfessions #winterrunning

So what’s been going on lately that I want to runfess? I had to think pretty hard on this one because I feel like it was just yesterday I was sharing my January Runessions. But here we go…

1. Winter Weather

Usually by this time of year I am desperate for spring. I have been known to count down the days until March because in my head that’s when spring starts and it should get warmer. I runfess that this year I have been ok with winter. Maybe it’s because of the treadmill. Maybe because the winter hasn’t been too bad overall. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be happy when spring is here. It’s just weird that I am content with winter right now.

2. Running in Snow

I don’t feel like I got in any good snow runs this season. There was one time I ran in the snow but it was so cold out that it was not very enjoyable. As I was driving back from NY last weekend  I was thinking it would be a perfect day to run in the snow because it was almost 40 degrees. Of course I got home and had no desire to run, but it got me thinking that sometimes running in the snow can be nice.

3. Running Shoe Addiction

As I shared a few weeks ago, I have PLENTY of running shoes. So why do I find myself looking around on Running Warehouse thinking about getting more shoes? Luckily I haven’t ordered anything yet. I don’ even know where I would keep any more shoes.

4. Commitment Issues

I mentioned earlier this week that I’m starting to prepare for a spring 5k. I’m not sure why, but I have had so many commitment issues with spring races. I’ll get all excited to start training and then the next day have no desire to do anything but run easy. I haven’t even been able to register for the race because I keep questioning if I even want to do it. I mean, I’m not going to force myself to do a race if I don’t feel like it but it’s just a 5k so really shouldn’t be this big of a deal.

5. Outdoor Running

I’ve had a new appreciation for outdoor running since getting my treadmill this winter. When you only run outside when the weather is decent, it becomes a whole lot more enjoyable. I know part of running is dealing with whatever conditions are thrown at us, but this is a nice change for sure. It makes me really look forward to my runs outside, especially when I get to run in the daylight.

I always look so forward to march 1 because it makes me feel like we are so much closer to the warmer weather! I’m praying that march doesn’t throw us any snow storms. it’s been fairly quiet weather wise since early January.

I feel like March is going to be annoying this year. Hopefully we wont have significant snow but I have a feeling there will be cold days and some wintery weather.

I have the same shoe addiction happening. I have a fairly new pair of shoes I got just before Christmas, and they are awesome. SO…I’m ever so tempted to get another pair to have in my rotation so I won’t be in a panic when these current ones wear out. The problem? I already have several pairs (5 or 6?) that aren’t suitable for long runs, but I keep forgetting to wear them for my shorter runs because I love these newer ones so much. I know…first world probs, right? 😉

      February 24, 2018 at 6:09 am

I stick tin the same 2 pairs of shoes for all my runs and now all my other ones are so old that I probably shouldn’t run in them anyway, even though they only have a few miles on them. It can be so easy to justify reasons to buy new shoes!

I”m definitely having commitment issues with regards to races this year. I’d like to do all the races but I don’t want to push it too hard and risk injury. Plus there’s the destination race vs running at home…

I’m glad winter is almost over too!

      February 24, 2018 at 6:12 am

I am still so paranoid about races! I need to figure out a way to commit to something but still not put too much pressure on myself leading up to the race.

Yes! So many shoes. It get worried I am not going to like the new models, so I buy as many as I can – especially when they go on sale! Running Warehouse is the best.

      February 24, 2018 at 6:13 am

I used to do the same thing! Lately I haven’t found any shoes that I really love so I haven’t done that in awhile.

Same as you, we had a really cold December and beginning of January but the last 6 weeks or so have pretty mild. I am loving running outdoors right now and I am kind of dreading the humidity of summer

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 24, 2018 at 6:13 am

I hope we can enjoy some nice spring weather for at least a few weeks before the summer humidity arrives!

OMG I can relate to all these! I wanted to do a snowy run this year but just didn’t. I have way too many shoes, and March is Spring in my mind!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 24, 2018 at 6:14 am

I’m torn because a snowy run would be fun but I’m also ok with with no more snow this winter!

  7. Marcia says

    February 23, 2018 at 8:01 am

Um yeah, the more shoes, the merrier, imo. For the most part I’ve resisted signing up for much this spring…says the girls who’s heading to Gasparilla and has Carlsbad in one month. Whoops!

      February 24, 2018 at 6:15 am

I hope you have a great time at your race! Sometimes you just need to hit that register button and make the commitment.

I was so excited to get in a snowy run while in Oregon! Winter hasn’t been that bad so far, so I am actually a bit bummed to see it go. Although spring usually does mean more sunshine which is nice!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 24, 2018 at 6:16 am

I am definitely ready for more sunshine! I feel like the weekends have been so dreary and those are the only times I really run outside in the daylight anymore.

I often find myself browsing on Running Warehouse even though I don’t need anything, lol. I’m just a sucker for a good sale on running items 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 24, 2018 at 6:17 am

Same here! I’ve actually done pretty well lately because I know I don’t need anything. But once in awhile I find myself browsing and have to resist, especially when it comes to shoes.

    February 23, 2018 at 8:54 am

I’ve been doing a ton of easy runs lately too! I can’t seem to commit to any sort of training plan yet :/
    Have a great weekend!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 24, 2018 at 6:18 am

It’s hard to make that commitment to sign up for a race, especially when it’s been awhile!

  12. Jennifer @ Fit Nana says

    February 23, 2018 at 9:54 am

I try so hard not to run winter/early spring races because training in the winter is so not my favorite! haha! That said, I just registered for a race (the MCM series 17.75k) that is in a month and I have Cherry Blossom in early April so …. clearly I’m not trying that hard. But, this time around, I’m just so happy to be running and feeling good that I’m okay with it all! Next year might be a different story, though. 🙂

Why have I never checked out Running Warehouse? Hmmm…….

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 24, 2018 at 6:19 am

It can be really hard to train for spring races in the winter! I usually end up waiting until the weather starts to improve to train for anything. You definitely need to check out Running Warehouse!

Once I start buying stuff (especially for running) I find it harder to stop!

  14. Lesley says

Running Warehouse doesn’t carry my shoes, and I only have two pairs right now. One is brand new, and I’ve only worn them on two runs. I want to use those for my long runs this training cycle.
I completely understand about wanting to run outside in good weather. It did occur to me to maybe run outside soon, but it was snowing yesterday when i got home, and it’s going to snow again tonight. Treadmill it is.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 24, 2018 at 6:21 am

Thats too bad that they don’t carry your shoes! Hopefully the weather improves soon and you can get outside.

Oh yes I have a shoe problem too. I just got the Mizunos Wave Sky a couple of weeks ago, but was just on Running Warehouse last night, LOL!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 24, 2018 at 6:21 am

It can be so tempting to buy ALL the shoes, even if we don’t really need them!

I have plenty of shoes but runfess that I checked Running Warehouse this morning and saw the new Launch 5 in the Boston/Lobster version and want to get them. I have 2 other pairs from last year but the new ones are so pretty!

I am over this weather. However, I shouldn’t complain too much because at least it isn’t freezing cold!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 25, 2018 at 5:28 am

The fun colors really get me when it comes to shoes! It seems like whenever they go on the sale none of the nice colors are ever left.

Alright, my last post about the Richmond Marathon Alright, my last post about the Richmond Marathon (maybe). This one is about lessons learned/areas for improvement.

1) Starting in the right corral- I knew I wanted to start a little slow but I think I started too far back and I ended up boxed in later in the race.

2) Increasing fueling- I think I did the best I could on this day but now that I know more about what works/doesn’t work for me I think I can try to get my carbs/hr a little higher for next time

3) Self-doubt- On paper I knew my training showed I could run a certain time. My coach knew I could run a certain time. But deep down did I believe I could run that time? I’m not really sure.

4) My right piriformis- This little muscle has been giving me trouble FOREVER and it likes to rear its ugly head the most during races. I’m working with a PT but it’s hard to address the issue when I can go months without any problems and then at mile 15 of a marathon it starts acting up. So while this is certainly an area for improvement I am not really sure what I’ll be able to do to keep it from happening next time.

5) Ignore the data leading up to the race- During race week my sleep scores were horrible, my HRV tanked, and my watch told me I was “strained”. I might just stop wearing it during the taper next time.

What lessons have you learned during a marathon or big race?

@richmondmarathon #racerecap
It’s been 5 days since the Richmond Marathon and i It’s been 5 days since the Richmond Marathon and it feels like a lifetime ago! I am working on my full race recap which I will post on my website but I wanted to share some reflections on here. Today I want to focus on what went well. Every finish line is an accomplishment, and while every race can teach us something I think it’s always important to focus on the positive.

First off, Richmond was a great race with amazing crowd support! There were some hills (a few steeper than I expected) but nothing crazy.

Fueling went well- after my train wreck of a run a few weeks ago I had to adjust my fueling plan and took out the Tailwind High Carb and went back to regular Skratch instead. I tried to make up for the difference with gels but my overall carbs per hour was a little less than it had been when using the Tailwind. I think I got about 65 g/hour so I’d like to get that up a bit next time but I didn’t get nauseous and took gels up until the end of the race.

Shoes felt good- during that same training run I had some top of foot soreness from my laces. I changed my lacing technique and had no issues on race day.

Mindset- I did a lot of work preparing for the race mentally and was able to use those strategies during the race. I focused on one mile at a time and shifted my goals when I knew my original goal was not going to happen.

Pacing- Even though I didn’t run my goal pace I was able to run fairly consistently without drastically slowing down at the end.

Recovery- I felt pretty good following the race and wasn’t even sore anymore by Tuesday. This was probably the least sore I’ve been after a marathon.

Strong training cycle- this year I feel like I’ve been clawing my way back to where I was a year ago after several illnesses last winter and spring. I had a great training cycle with @lauranorrisrunning and I know I’ve made more progress than my race time shows.

Marathons are a huge investment so I really tried to make the most of the experience!

@richmondmarathon #racerecap
Happy Medal Monday! I can’t believe the Richmond M Happy Medal Monday! I can’t believe the Richmond Marathon was only 2 days ago. I’m barely sore (probably because I was trained for a faster time than I ran) and am feeling good.

I included a list of my marathon times on the last slide here, which I posted in my stories yesterday. I got some messages about how others can relate to feeling like their times “reset” at a certain point- whether it was after an injury, having kids, or just time off from running.

I think we can get so caught up in PRs that it may take away from the overall progress made in the process of training. Sure, there are runners who come back from having kids and immediately set a new lifetime PR. But many of us will need to chip away at our times to get to where we want to be.

Focusing on progress and the gains made in a training cycle vs a specific race time can help to keep things in perspective!

Now, I’m trying to figure out spring racing plans. What’s everyone running this spring?

#medalmonday
What a day! This race (and really, this week) was What a day! This race (and really, this week) was a rollercoaster. I knew pretty early on that my legs and my lungs were not feeling my goal pace. Each time I sped up it felt really hard- way too hard to not even be at 10 miles yet. So I just focused on running the effort that my body would allow. I used all the mental strategies I had to get through each mile. Ultimately, I wanted to run faster than my marathon last November, which I did by almost 2 minutes, making this a postpartum PR. More importantly, I smiled almost the whole time.

After finishing we had to rush to get out of our hotel room and spent the whole afternoon driving home. Over the past 2 days I’ve spent almost 10 hours in the car.

More to come soon…just hoping to get home and get some rest soon!
