Gear and Accessories I’m Loving For Fall Running

This time of year is so perfect for running. (Well, when you’re not injured or having an “off” week…). You probably know by now that I love summer running clothes because they are so light and easy, but fall running clothes are a close second. I don’t have to worry as much about chafing in the cooler weather but that is the one thing I don’t like about running shorts. I thought I would share some of my favorites for fall running today. Most of these are items I have had since last year so I have had plenty of time to try them out and make sure they really are worth sharing!

Some of the links in this post are affiliate links- I greatly appreciate your support!

Fall is a great time of year for running, and it helps if you have the right gear and accessories! The weather is cooler, the mornings and evenings are darker, and there is sometimes more rain. Check out these products I am loving for this time of year! #running #fall #fallrunning #runninggear

Let’s start with clothes. For most of my runs I have been wearing capris with a tank top and long-sleeved t-shirt or 1/2 zip. This will probably differ depending on where you live but I feel like it’s worked for temps in the 40s.

Tops:

Lululemon Outrun 1/2 zip They don’t make the exact same one I have anymore but this one looks really close! I love the thumb holes and the ends of the sleeves fold over if you need to cover your hands but don’t want to wear gloves.

lululemon 1/2 zip

Bottoms:

Oiselle Knickers These fit perfectly and are really comfortable. They have a nice big pocket on the side which fits my phone!

OIselle Knickers and Lululemon 1/4 zip

ProCompression Leggings (sadly they don’t make these anymore!)

C9 Champion Capris I’m not sure exactly which style I have (mine are a few years old) but these are pretty close. They are so comfortable- I love wearing them around the house even when I’m not working out.

Tank (Base Layer):

Lululemon Swiftly Raceback Tan

This is perfect for base layering (I like when they are kind of long) and I also wear it when I am working out inside.

Socks:

ProCompression Over the Calf Socks, Mid Socks and Low Socks

Feetures Elite Light Cushion No Show Tab (luckily I haven’t lost these yet!)

Gloves:

Brooks Pulse Lite Running Gloves

I try to only wear gloves when I really have to- I love when a shirt has thumb holes so I can keep my hands warm without having to wear gloves!

Headband:

Brooks’ Greenlight Running Headband

Nike DriFit Running Headband

headband and gloves

What about shoes? This really isn’t impacted by the weather or season but these are the two models I have been wearing for the past few months:

Brooks’ Pure Flow 4

Brooks’ Launch 3

brooks launch 3

Ok, now for the accessories. This is particularly important in the fall because the mornings and evenings are so dark. These are some of the items I bring on almost all of my runs:

SmarterLife LED Headlamp  This is so small and light I barely notice I am wearing it, but it’s also really bright!

Headlamp

Amphipod Reflective Running Vest This is perfect to slip over whatever I am wearing no matter what the temperature is. It also has a pocket so I can stick my key in there.vest

Road ID

Sabre Pepper Spray

Flip Belt

flip belt

Luckily I can use/wear a lot of this stuff all year long which is great because it feels like fall is such a short season! I really like having items that can work for more than one time of year- like tanks that can be worn on their own or layered, leggings that are light enough to wear before it gets really cold, and socks that are medium thickness and will work any time that it’s not super hot or super cold.

I think I need a new lulu pullover. I have been alternating two that are like the one you mentioned (every year they change the name!) and I love the fit and how they have the cuffins for the hands. the best gloves ever for me are the fluff over mittens but they don’t make them anymore! glad I got them when I did. I could also use a new pair of pants but I keep putting it off! I love running in the fall, it’s cold but not too cold!

I am hoping to find a good pair of warm tights this year since I don’t have any that I really like. You always talk about those mittens and its too bad they stopped making them!

It’s crazy how quickly Lulu discontinues their styles. But then maybe brings them back. I guess that’s what makes us jump on them!

      November 15, 2016 at 6:46 pm

So true! At least it seems like they make similar stuff each year so we can still find something we like even if its not exactly the same.

Allllll about the layers! I have many similar pieces by different companies. I’m going to need new gloves this winter because I can only find one of my saucony mitts and that ain’t gonna cut it when winter comes. But I have some great Brooks gloves until then1

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2016 at 6:47 pm

I think I need to invest in some warmer gloves for the winter! I have a few pairs that are good for mild temps but I need something better for those really cold days.

I did not know that Pro Compression stopped making their tights. I have a pair that I really like. Lululemon on the hand, not so much. I went there for the first time a few weeks ago and their sizes are so off, not to mention pricey!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2016 at 6:48 pm

They still make their compression tights but not the leggings, which are my favorite. Lululemon is really expensive. I only shop there when I have a gift card!

We’ve had a mild summer and fall, so most of my running wardrobe transitioned over with just a few tweaks like arm warmers. I need a good quarter zip shirt though!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2016 at 6:48 pm

I haven’t even thought to wear arm warmers this year but those are really great for the transition from warmer to cooler weather!

  6. Lesley says

    November 15, 2016 at 9:30 am

I’d say arm sleeves as part of layering. It wasn’t cold enough for a long sleeve shirt when I was running this past Saturday, but I needed something to keep my arms warm. I’ve more a lot of use out o my arm sleeves, more than I thought when I first bought them.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2016 at 6:49 pm

Arm sleeves are great because you can take them off if you start to get warm! I have worn them in some fall races and they are perfect.

I wear a lot of the same things over and over and do laundry every day. If I didn’t keep up with my laundry on the daily, I’d be in some serious trouble by the weekend! Which reminds me, I need to go put a load in right now! I got an Under Armour shirt at Sport Chek last month to wear under a light jacket on cold and rainy days. I wear a lot of Lulu leggings, and super old crappy sports bras. 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2016 at 6:50 pm

I didn’t even mention sports bras because I get mine at Target and never replace them! I should really invest in some better ones, but the last time I bought a good one I ended up losing it. I think I left it in a hotel after a race.

I’m loving all of the gear! I don’t own a thing from Lululemon but they look so cute! I definitely need more base layers for the upcoming colder weather!

I have a few items from Lululemon that I love and will hopefully last a long time. But I only shop there when I have a gift card!

I feel like I’m the only runner on the planet that doesn’t run in Lululemon. I’ve never even set foot in the store if I’m being honest! Oops. Lol

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 16, 2016 at 5:25 am

I only have a few Lululemon items and they are always purchased with a gift card! I think I have been in the store once, and now that I know my sizes I just shop online.

I can’t justify buying Lulelemon workout clothes, they are out of my budget. But I love the way they look and I’ve heard they are comfortable! Feetures socks are a must for me – prevent any ankle chafing and they have sweet colors 🙂

      November 16, 2016 at 5:26 am

I have been asking for a Lululemon gift card for Christmas every year so thats how I buy a few things from there. I only have 1 pair of Features but I definitely want to invest in a few more!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 16, 2016 at 7:26 pm

I still haven’t tried skirt sports! I have heard great things about them though. Maybe that will be the next pair of tights I try.

It’s been so warm that I am still mostly running in capris. I found some Asics capris last year at TJMaxx that have pockets on both hips. I love them for my long runs because I can tuck more stuff in there. It really is all about the little things. I love my tops with thumbholes. Altho I am trialing a Mizuno cold weather running top (baselayer) that I am nuts about. The fabric is amazing. I’ll be posting a review on the blog soon.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 16, 2016 at 7:27 pm

Looking forward to your review of that top! And something like extra pockets really makes a pair of running tights so much better.

  14. Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says

    November 16, 2016 at 12:39 pm

I am all about the layers! Our fall has been pretty mild so far but I like switching over to more capris and long sleeves. I’m kind of dreading all the gear for winter running…but somehow I always get through winter!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 16, 2016 at 7:28 pm

I always try to go as long as possible before I start wearing tights and heavier jackets. It’s definitely been a nice few months with good running weather!

I wish I had cute fall/winter running clothes like you, but I wear the same thing all year long. During extra cold days I’ll wear capris instead of shorts, but extra cold for us is usually 55*F!

BTW do you know if anyone else has issues with your posts not showing up in Feedly (that blog reader I use). It says I’m subscribed to you, but even though I put your new URL it shows up as runningoutofwine and none of your new posts are showing up for me. Not a big deal at all as I usually check your blog by typing in the URL anyway, just wondering if it’s just me. Thanks!

I think I have seen those and always considered getting them! I have a pair of capris from there but I use them more for yoga.

I wear many of my summer clothes well into the fall – I just add layers. I run in a tank with a skirt in the summer, then I’ll throw a half zip over it, then I’ll add compression socks, then I’ll add a windbreaker – all depends on how cold. Sometimes I even wear a pair of capris or tights with my skirts because my rear end is always cold in the winter.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 18, 2016 at 7:40 pm

I do something similar except I have never run in a skirt! Maybe some day I will give one a try:)
