For some reason when I sat down to write about my weekend I got total writer’s block. Maybe that’s because not a whole lot happened? Or possibly because I am slightly sucked into the episode of Parenthood that I am watching (thank you all for encouraging me to keep watching it- it’s definitely gotten better!) So anyway, let’s talk about the weekend, exciting or not.
Lately our weekends have been pretty busy with packing and furniture shopping. (Fun right? I realized how old it felt to be wandering around Home Depot while a few years ago I would have been getting drunk celebrating St. Patrick’s Day).
On Saturday morning it was pouring rain, and Rob was running in the DC half. After making the trek down on Thursday and with the less-than-ideal conditions I opted out of spectating. Rob said the weather was pretty awful, but he managed to PR anyway!
I did my PT exercises and a little bit of easy yoga while he was gone, and did most of my weekly meal prep. Once he got home we headed out to the stores for furniture shopping. On Saturday night we watched Mockingjay Part 1 with a couple glasses of wine.
On Sunday I felt like I needed to do some cardio since I haven’t run since last Monday on the alter-g. I haven’t really been able to figure out a cross-training option that feels good, so I decided to give swimming a try. My gym doesn’t have an indoor pool, but I was able to go to a different location on the other side of the city. I got there right when it opened at 8 and swam for 30 minutes. If you read my blog last summer you may remember that I tried to learn how to swim and didn’t make much progress. The whole breathing thing is what really throws me off.
After my swim I got a haircut (which took way longer than expected) and grabbed a Starbucks. By the time I started to drive back across the city there was a ton of traffic because of the St. Patricks Day 5k that would be later that afternoon. Gotta love sitting in the car for 45 minutes to go 3 miles.
Sunday afternoon was more furniture shopping, a little fro-yo, and relaxing. I’m off from work Monday for our new home orientation (walkthrough) and inspection! Not exactly a fun day off, but still important things and it means we are really close to being able to move in!
I’m linking up with Tara today to share my weekend update!
How was your weekend?
Are you a good swimmer?
Did you race this weekend? How’d it go?
yeah! It does sound like you are getting close to moving in-fun! I saw some pics posted over the weekend and all that rain looked for awful for the DC half 🙁 I had to drive to St. Pete on Sunday in the middle of the day and the traffic was horrible- where are all these people going I kept thinking??? I am at a work conference for a couple of days- have a great Monday!
It sounded like it was pretty bad in DC for the race! As much as I wished I was out there running, I guess those conditions made it a bit easier to pass up:)
I agree that many grown up weekend things don’t feel blog worthy 🙂 I hate getting my hair cut because it feels like it takes so much longer than it should every time! Adam also had a race, 5k in the rain sat morning and I did not at all envy that weather. I’ve really lost my edge 😉
I’ve lost my edge too! Being outside for a race in that weather sounded pretty awful.
I always get so jealous of how fast guys can get their hair cut! Not fair!
Weekends are feeling shorter and shorter lately, probably because my long run takes up most of Saturday in one way or another and Sunday is catching up (ha) before Monday.
Congrats to Rob on his PR! I didn’t run but know people who did, sounds nasty.
I’m not a great swimmer, have done it for rehab and a little XT. I actually like pool running better but probably should work on swimming.
I thought about pool running, and might give that a try too. Weekends are definitely too short!
Congrats on the new home. Moving is a real pain (we just did it in October) but also an exciting time to start fresh. Hope everything goes smoothly for you. I do swim (triathlete) and I also raced a 5K this weekend. Small venue so getting there and parking wasn’t bad. I love/hate 5Ks. Love that they don’t take much taper or recovery, hate that they hurt so bad when you’re gunning for a PR.
5ks are definitely hard, but in such a different way than a longer race! I always say I couldnt do a triathlon because I can’t swim or bike:)
I know the feeling!
But you will be so happy once you’re in your new home! Sometimes, we end up spending the whole weekend staying home. And spending the whole weekend in a place that you own is the best feeling!
I can’t wait for weekends like that!
Ugh the weather for RnR DC was definitely un-enviable, but congrats to Rob! Maybe he just ran faster to get it over with lol. I honestly don’t envy the drunkards that were out making a fool of themselves this weekend. I can tell you what, they certainly didn’t feel like getting up to go swimming the next morning!
I think he did run faster to get it over with- that’s what I would have done!
And good point about the drunkards…I definitely don’t miss feeling awful the day after a night out!
You were theeeerrreeeee!!!! I didnt see youuuu! Booooooooo!!!!!!!! Agh! I wish I thought about that! I would hav loved to meet up! Grrr! Congrats to Rob though! Sometimes it is good to have a calm weekend as most the time our lives are so hectic, especially when it was raining like that!
I wasn’t there:( I wanted to go but between the weather and having already made the trip down on Thursday to get packets I bailed on spectating.
Had to laugh on the haircut thing, because that is what happened with us last week – we all use the same stylist, and Lisa got hers done one day (also highlights & roots – shhh) and it was almost 3 hours. The boys and I went the next night and all three of us were done in about an hour! And while I still get my ‘little boy’s regular’ haircut, our boys actually get rather specific styles. Funny.
Adult weekends can be a drag … for me the worst is when Lisa is working and the boys have activities that are conflicting/overlapping and I feel like the whole weekend is spent waiting and chasing … ugh.
Congrats to Rob on the PR!
And I hope that you feel better … between the obsessions about eating and frequent injuries … I worry. I really do.
I think about 6 or 7 guys came in and got their haircut in the time it took my to get mine done! That is one of the reasons why I hate getting a haircut (along with the cost). I try to go as long as possible without getting it done.
I’m sure that having kids around just takes adult weekends to a whole new level! Lately it just feels like the weekends fly by.
Thanks for your well wishes…I’m not sure what you mean by “obsessions about eating”, but I don’t feel like that is an area of concern for me. I do agree that the injuries are worrisome. Which is why I have been working with medical professionals, taking their advice but also doing what feels right to me, and trying to make the best decisions I can.
Your hair looks great! My weekend wasn’t all that eventful either. I took a barre class, went to dinner on Saturday and then spent all day Sunday packing for today’s business trip. Yup…adult weekend are not so exciting haha.
Thanks! I often feel like the weekends are spent catching up from the previous week and preparing for the one ahead.
Ha! Swimming. Still struggling with that. Let’s say I’m more of a swimmer than I was. Congrats to Rob on his PR. Bummed it was soooo rainy. Pretty hair!
Swimming is HARD! It’s so different than any other type of exercise!
I was reading a story which highlighted the St Pat’s day police report for the Wrigleyville neighborhood in Chicago aka party central. Wow. Are people drinking more than they used to or am I just getting old? LOL. I’m pretty happy with my weekend–a half marathon and bed by 9 both nights. Yep, I’m old!
I definitely like to be in bed by 9 as well:) I think the older I get the more shocked I am when I see younger people getting drunk!
How exciting that your walk through is today! Your house has come together really fast over the last month! I hope everything goes smoothly for you!
This weekend a colleague invited me to a party. I didn’t end up going because Adam got really sick with his first cold in about 10 years. Looking at the pics from the party on Facebook cracked me up. It reminded me of college house parties, everyone was just a little bit older. I’m sort of glad I didn’t go because I don’t really miss those days! I think old age suits me well, haha!
Thanks! Haha yes, I am very happy being old and boring:)
I used to be on swim team so I am a confident swimmer but I am sure my form SUCKS. And I am not fast since I don’t swim very often. So basically I swim well enough that I can enjoy a pool without drowning and I have a backup exercise in case I am ever injured to the point where I have to swim!
That’s great and that is what I wish I could do! i just can’t figure out the breathing…ugh its so hard!
Lisa, I’m not happy to hear that you have problems swimming/breathing but I’m definitely glad to have some company. I’ve tried swimming, and I really enjoy it, but I haven’t been able to get the breathing thing down, either. My husband, who swims regularly and participates in triathlons, says that it just takes practice and, to be honest, I don’t do it often enough to really work on it. Maybe one of these days…I’m so excited to hear that you’ll be doing house stuff today; you’re getting so close! Thank you for linking up with the blog; hope you have a great day!
I guess I will just have to practice with the swimming! I feel like I am making so much more noise when I try to breathe than the other people swimming around me.
First of your hair looks beautiful! I hate being stuck in traffic but I guess it happens to all of us. It’s so exciting that things are coming together at your new house! So exciting even though I’m sure it’s a lot of work. Hope you have a fabulous Monday!
Thanks! Traffic is annoying but I guess its inevitable:)
I never mastered swimming and I figure I know enough so I’m good. Someone asked me if I would do a Tri one day – I haven’t biked since I was 12 and I don’t swim so that’s a no.
I feel the same way about doing a tri! I could only do the running part!
Your hair looks great and great job on that swim! The breathing throws me off too. I don’t blame you one bit for opting out of spectating. The weather was so gross on Saturday! Congrats to Rob on his PR though!
Haha I was having the exact same thoughts about St. Paddy’s the other day when I was driving down York Road and all these drunk college students were stumbling across the street. I was all “Get out of the road you drunk kids!!!” and shaking my fist like some kind of crotchety old lady. I totally used to be one of those drunk kids hahaha.
Ahh York road…my home from 2001-2005:) Now I am scared to even drive down that part near Northern Parkway.
And I knew I got old the day I decided my hair can’t touch pool water and I jumping in was no longer acceptable because the water might be cold. lol. I was a decent swimmer but nothing swim meet status. Nowadays, I barely put my feet in but it’s really a great non impact workout. I am trying to get my dad to join Lifetime for the pool. He has terrible knees (most likely from his running days) and needs to exercise without hurting himself.
I don’t like getting in if the water is cold either! Its definitely such a good non-impact workout. I’m glad I at least learned the basics last summer so I have a cross training option for now.
Love your haircut! And congrats to your hubby on the PR!
I’m not much of a swimmer either as I struggle with the breathing much like you. Maybe it’s because I haven’t done it much since I was a kid? At least not real lap swimming anyway. I’d probably have to take lessons again to be able to swim laps correctly 🙂 You’re not alone in the swim struggle!
I took a free 30 min private lesson last summer and they taught me how I was supposed to breathe…but I still haven’t figured out how to actually do it while I am swimming!
I like to swim! We have an olympic size pool at my YMCA where I work and I have never used it. That’s a little embarrassing. I think you inspired me to get in there though because it’s great cardio and I love to swim.
I’m kind of jealous because right now I really wish I was a good swimmer! Oh well, something to work on I guess!
My weekend was pretty slow as well but it was nice to get some things done around the house and we also watched Mockingjay part 1.
That’s always good! Did you like the movie? I though it was really good, but will probably always favor the original Hunger Games.
Wooo hoo for big kid responsibilities!! Furniture shopping is weirdly satisfying 🙂 plus you throw some fro-yo in there? Perfect.
is it just me or does it seem like guys can run/PR without even trying that hard? haha so unfair!
UM yes I don’t understand but its so not fair!! Rob only ran like 2 days a week since Christmas, and managed to PR without even really trying.
1. Your hair looks amazing of course. And 2. My weekend was spent writing essays so that was no fun at all!
1. Thank you! 2. That’s no fun! I hope they are all done and you can relax a bit!
I have the exact same issue with swimming. I tried to do it when I was pregnant and the breathing thing is what threw me off. It’s like when you try and pat your head and rub your belly at the same time. Congrats to Rob on his PR and your hair looks great! So exciting about your new house, too.
Thanks! Yea, I am definitely not coordinated when it comes to swimming. I can only imagine what the swimmers around me are thinking.
Congrats to Rob on the PR, and your hair looks so pretty! Fresh haircuts feel the best.
Swimming is not my strength. My mom and her parents were all great swimmers but somehow the gene skipped me. Timing breathing is so hard! I also totally lack upper body strength and shoulder mobility. I bet it felt good for you to get some cardio in!
It did feel good, and I will probably continue to try to work on it I suppose. I just don’t understand how the other swimmers at my pool make it look so easy:)
Congrats to Rob–PRing is always fun!! We were just talking about how much our weekend activities have changed over the last few years! Honestly though, while there is a very very small part of me that misses being able to go out whenever we wanted to, sleep in, etc, this life right now if pretty darn good!!
You hair looks great and I don’t swim because I can’t get the breathing down either, it just doesn’t feel natural at all to me!
I hope you have a great week!
Oh I agree- I wouldn’t really want to go back to being in my early 20s! I couldn’t handle that anymore!
I’m not exactly good at swimming, which is probably why I haven’t done it in years! I don’t think I’ve swam since before I started college…
Your new haircut is so pretty!!
Enjoy doing the walkthrough on your new house. You’re almost there 🙂
Thanks! Yea I remember trying to swim a couple times in college, and I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t try again until like 2 years ago and I just don’t do it consistently enough to get better at it.
Isn’t it crazy how you change your priorities and lifestyle? My husband and I were just talking about this. He asked me if 10 years ago I thought I would be asking him for an indoor greenhouse kit and I laughed! However, I wouldn’t change anything…I love my new grown up lifestyle…most of the time!
The home buying process is so stressful! I hope everything goes as smoothly as possible!
I agree- I am happy with where I am in life, even though it may not be as “fun”:)
Yes, things change, don’t they? My weekends are now given over entirely to my kids games (we had SEVEN this weekend). I am exhausted today! But it’s all good.
Can’t blame you for not schlepping down to DC Saturday–not a fun commute, especially in the rain!
Wow 7 games is tough! Sounds more exhausting than running a marathon:)
No races yet, but I’m hoping to be racing again by mid-summer. 🙂
When my hair was alot longer, I used to hate getting my haircut because it would take forever for my hairdresser to blow it out. Sometimes I’d ask if she could just cut it, and give it a quick towel dry and I would just let it air dry. She really hated that – she said she didn’t want me to leave the salon looking less than amazing. But sometimes I just didn’t care. :->
There have been quite a few times that I haven’t felt like waiting to get my hair dried after getting in cut. But usually I go to Hair Cuttery and they don’t really care:)
Your hair is perfection! Totally hair envy over here! Isn’t it funny, as a runner you would get stopped at a race like that? If only you had your gear you could have been a race bandit!
MB
Haha that would have been fun! I was thinking I could have run home in half the time it took me to drive!
I would love to have a place I could swim I use to swim like a fish when I was little. We do have a community college near by but I have yet to bite the bullet to check into it. We were camping for spring break not far from our house and I was headed out to a 5k and slipped on the steps of the rv and well can’t run until it’s better. 🙁
Its a little annoying because my local gym doesn’t have an indoor pool, but its a chain so I can use other gyms in the city, they’re just not as convenient.
Sorry again about your fall! I hope you’re feeling better!
I find trips to Home Depot and Lowe’s just so boring and have had to do a few since we moved! Nice job to your hubby on his run! And I know, not every weekend is fabulous. That makes the fabulous ones, that much more fabulous. Right? 🙂
Definitely! I know that we have to do the boring stuff now in order to be able to enjoy our home later!
I was on the swim team in school so I’m a decent swimmer. I say decent meaning I know the strokes and can breathe well but overall it’s nottttt my favorite.
That sounds pretty good to me! I mean isn’t that really all there is to it?;)
Congratulations to your husband on a PR in those conditions! I’m such a terrible swimmer. It was so bad that in junior high they put me in the beginners group for P.E. where literally all we did the whole period was stick our heads underwater and then come up every few seconds in the shallow end. Meanwhile, all my friends were over chilling in the deep end doing all kinds of things haha. Cute hair! 🙂
Haha that doesn’t sound like a fair way to split up a gym class! I’m sure you would be better than you think if you tried it again.
Your hair looks great! I am glad you got hooked on Parenthood 🙂 I am hooked on Good Wife right now. I swam on a club team growing up, so I guess my swimming is okay. I am a better distance swimmer than sprinter.
We didn’t have a swim team or club where I grew up, so maybe that’s where i went wrong. I definitely can’t swim fast!
Bummed we didn’t get to meet up this weekend, but you should be happy you didn’t. As you know the conditions were less than stellar and it was a rough race. I remember thinking the same exact thing about being more excited about going to Home Depot and Bed Bath and Beyond than recovering from my hangover from the night before. It all comes full circle 😉
I was sad that I couldn’t be at the race with everyone, but I have to admit it was a good race to miss with that weather!
Congrats on hubby’s PR! I bailed on the 5K. It wasn’t worth the commute to go and run in the rain. I did run the Shamrock 5K on Sunday though. That was a fun race, very windy though.
I don’t blame you! And at least you had another race to do the next day! That wind was insane on Sunday.
I remember about 2 years ago when adulthood finally hit me. I realized that weekends were just our days to do all the work we didn’t have time for during the week – all the laundry, cleaning and errands that I just couldn’t get to after the gym (or was too tired to do). That was a sad moment.
Buttt the freedom that comes with adulthood responsibility is pretty great. & I’d much rather have a day off to see a house I bought than work 🙂
Congrats to your hubby on his PR! It was brutal out there, I don’t blame you for passing on spectating!
There are definitely pros and cons to being an adult, and at this point I think I’m pretty comfortable with where I am. I don’t think I could handle being young again!
I used to be o the swim team when I was younger but I haven’t swam laps in yrs. Congrats to your hubby for a PR. I heard the conditions were not the greatest. It’s funny the older you get the more excited you are to do other things. Furniture shop rather than going out to bars.
Yea not sure if I would say I was “excited” to furniture shop, but it was something that had to get done. It will be worth it later on!
You hair looks awesome! Sucks it took longer than expected! Girl I was just thinking about those weekends of crazy drinking and hanging out at bars for St. Patrick’s Day. I’m kind of glad I’m past that point though, lol that was exhausting! Love that you are taking up swimming, I’m quite terrible at swimming and it’s probably the hardest cardio ever in my eyes lol!
Those days were SO exhausting! I am definitely happy to be out of that stage in my life:) Swimming is really hard! I hope it gets a little easier if I keep working on it:)
I personally love furniture shopping…unless you can’t find anything you like 🙂 We still need dining room furniture and I can’t wait to go shopping for it! Love your hair! I used to be on the swim team, but have no interest in swimming anymore.
I think what made the shopping so stressful was that we have NOTHING so we needed to figure out colors and could literally get anything. Sometimes having too many options makes it so hard to make a decision!
Good for him for his PR! And I am with you on the swimming thing- the breathing throws me off, and I can swim, but I can’t SWIM. I want to love swimming. Maybe if my local gym had a cleaner pool I’d be more into it..I don’t know. No race this weekend for me (I was actually suppose to do RnR DC too! BUT we came south for spring break instead of north!)
I want to love swimming too, but when it feels so difficult its hard to love it! I hope you’re having a good trip:)
Hope everything went well with the home inspection!
Thanks!- It went well!
Our weekend was very low key since my youngest son was still recovering from the flu.
Great picture of you while sitting in the car!!!
Thanks! I hope that your son is feeling better, and maybe you can make up for it this weekend:)
