Postpartum Training: 4 Weeks to the Charles Street 12

The Charles Street 12 is really starting to sneak up on me! I only have 1 more really long run before I cut back for the race. Since this is a shortened training cycle, it’s going by really quickly!

4 Weeks to the Charles Street 12

I am still feeling good overall. The workouts I have done seem challenging but manageable. Laura has pushed me more than I would have pushed myself, but not too hard. Now that I have run 11 miles, 12 miles doesn’t seem overwhelming anymore.

Monday: Strength training

All was going well with this workout until halfway through when I noticed a huge spider across the room. Usually I am ok dealing with them, but this one was really big. And fast. I managed to trap it under a small trash can. Later that morning Rob managed to vacuum it up and then get it outside. It was an interesting start to the week!

Tuesday: 6 miles with 2 x 15 minutes at tempo pace

This run reminded me of marathon training 4 years ago, when I did a lot of long tempo runs. These were only 15 minute intervals but they sounded intimidating. The first set was a lot slower than the second set. I think I held back during the first set because I didn’t think I could hold on to a faster pace for that long.

The first interval averaged an 8:12 pace and the second interval was 7:38.

Wednesday: Strength training

Luckily there were no spiders seen during this workout!

Thursday: Rest day
Friday: 3 stroller miles

I’ve complained a bit about stroller running on instagram. Sometimes it feels fine- I mean, as good as it can feel to push a stroller with a 17 pound baby in it. But often times when I have the front wheel locked I can’t get it aligned properly so it veers to the side. Many people have reached out and said they don’t lock the front wheel. I tried that too and for a few minutes it was fine and then it started kind of bouncing and swiveling. I think I just need to keep trying different things to figure out what will work.

Saturday: 11 miles

This was such a nice break from the heat and humidity we had the past few weeks. I got out at 5:15 and was done by 7:05. It always feels good to start off the weekend with a long run!

long run

I forgot to change my watch back after my tempo run to lap at each mile so I really didn’t know when I was done with each mile unless I looked down to check. (Usually I have it set to vibrate at each mile). In a way this was good because I barely looked at it and the miles went by pretty quickly!

Sunday: 4 stroller miles

We went out for our weekend family stroller run and completed 4 miles. I started with the stroller and did just over 2 miles with it. After some adjustments before the run it was feeling good again! Hoping this continues.

Next weekend I have another long run (12 miles) and then I will cut back before the race. Although I move around my workouts quite a bit, I do feel like I am finally in a nice routine with my running and workouts. Next week will be another weird week but I’m sure I’ll be able to get most of my workouts done. And fingers crossed I finally have this stroller thing figured out. It’s so much more enjoyable to run with it when it’s moving well!

I will scream if a spider surprises me, but I leave them alone to eat the other bugs! I didn’t start running until my kids were well beyond stroller age, and am so impressed by women who run with strollers – it’s hard! I hope you get the mechanics figured out.

I used to swear I would never run with a stroller, but here I am! It’s definitely getting better to run with as a figure it out more.

Wow! I can’t believe its just a month away. Time really does fly by (especially this summer)!

I feel like it’s so much harder when the front wheel is locked. I leave it unlocked unless I’m on hilly/unsteady territory.

So many people say they leave it unlocked! I wonder why it bounces so much for me when its not locked. Someone on instagram suggested I check the air in the tires so maybe I’ll do that.

It does sound like you are fitting it all in. We must have the same race day, as I have 4 weeks until my goal marathon. Good job on your workouts! Spiders? I like them! I’m not afraid of them – but I am totally creeped out by roaches and centipedes. Ewwwwwwwww Sometimes we actually “save” the spiders by putting them outside if we find them in the house!

Ughh roaches are the worst!! I can usually handle spiders but this one was way beyond my limits. My race is on 8/31- is that when yours is?

Ewwww……Spiders totally creep me out! I’m not really afraid of them, since I’m bigger than (most) of them, but yuck. They serve no purpose LOL Glad the stroller is working better for you.

Haha I like to keep in mind that they eat other bugs, but still. I’d much rather not have them inside my house.

Glad that stroller running is working better for you! Great job on a strong week of training!
I’m not afraid of spider and usually rescue them and take them outside.

Thanks! Usually I’m not afraid of spiders but this one was just way too big. And it creeped me out that it was trying to hide and run away, and I wouldn’t know where it would turn up later.

My marathon is on Sept 8. Maybe one of us is not really 4 weeks away from race day? : )

Haha! So I actually count from when the week I am recapping starts. So when I recapped last week, it was 4 weeks away at the beginning of the week.

Yeah, spiders freak me out too. Although I have to keep my cool when I am in the classroom and my students see one. No point in all of us freaking out. I struggle with tempo runs because I always go too fast and then cannot hold the pace for that long. Have a great run this weekend! You are doing so well in your training and are going to rock your 12 miles.

Pacing for tempo runs is so tough! I find that I either go out too fast or too slow.

good week Lisa! I can’t believe how fast the race is coming up!

so, um, spiders… yeah I think I either would have moved out or set the room on fire! haha! I DO NOT LIKE SPIDERS. I DO NOT CARE THAT THEY ARE HELPFUL CREATURES.

I change my schedule up if need be. Like this week we had much more rain than the last several weeks. I didn’t actually do half of what I wanted to do. Also I have some things going on that has had me move my long run from Sunday to Saturday, but in the end it’s fine because I have a half marathon coming up soon (as part of my marathon training) that is also on a Saturday.

It’s so important to be flexible while training! While I prefer to do certain runs on certain days it just doesn’t always work out that way so I just try to go with it.
