Race Across Maryland Week 1 (Miles 0-39)

This week I started the Race Across Maryland. The goal is to run 250 miles across Maryland in 60 days. I’m hoping to mostly run the distance, but I am tracking my walks too. This week I ran 30.2 miles and walked 8.8 miles. I hadn’t been tracking my walks prior to this week so it was interesting to look at how far I walk each day when I go on stroller walks with Grayson!

This was the first week for the Race Across Maryland challenge. I got in 6 runs, daily walks, and strength training sessions. Here is the recap from the Race Across Maryland Week 1. #running #workouts

This was a pretty good week of workouts. Towards the end of the week we had chances of thunderstorms every day, so you know what that means: humidity. But luckily the storms didn’t interfere with my runs much. I did end up doing my long run on Friday because the weekend forecast wasn’t looking great.

Running and Walking this week

While this was a slight increase in mileage for me, it wasn’t anything too significant in terms of running more. I’ve done 30 miles a week over the past couple of months. However, I do think all the walking plus the runs is new for me. After my long run on Friday I took Grayson for a walk. It felt good to shake out my legs but I also think it wore me out a little more. We skipped an afternoon walk because I needed a break.

Monday stroller run

I especially notice this when I run alone in the early morning, which is typically for longer than I run with the stroller. If I run with the stroller it basically replaces a walk (we usually walk a little after breakfast and a little in the afternoon). When I run in the morning alone that means a longer run plus 2 walks.

long run

I’m just trying to be mindful of this because I may need to account for the walking more than I thought. Initially I was hoping to just run the 250 miles but track my walks just in case I found the running to be too much. I guess I am feeling like if I’m going to be walking so much, I might as well count it!

Other Weekly Updates

This was a challenging week of working from home/parenting. Rob had a really busy week at work and was gone very long hours all week. Grayson is dropping down to 1 nap and his routine is a complete mess right now. I’ve been so lucky through all of this that he held on to this routine of 2 naps a day this long, especially while the school year was still going on and I had meetings every day.

He’s been so overtired that he needs an early bedtime and Rob doesn’t get to see him. Plus his naps have been pretty short most days. It makes it really challenging to plan out anything for work when I have no clue when or how long he will be sleeping for. Not to mention it feels impossible to get anything done!

The good news is our COVID numbers in Maryland have stayed low, even with more places opening up. I know other states are seeing them go up so I hope we can continue to be careful here.

Nice miles, Lisa! I’ve seen other runners counting walking miles for these challenges too. My run across Illinois challenge is 210 miles over 70 days, which I think is doable for me without walking. I know how you feel about counting those walking miles… but a runner’s gotta do, right?

Hopefully Grayson will be adjusted to his new sleep schedule quickly! Once he gets his one nap, it will be a long one. I used to love that! ;P

I am ok with including the walking, I’m just also curious to see if I can do it without those miles.
Everyone says that 1 nap is nice and long but so far his has been way to short! Hoping that changes soon as we push it back later in the day!

I think it’s important to keep your walking miles in mind no matter what — they are time on your feet, even if low impact they still. I hope Grayson gets into a new routine soon. I can’t imagine how tough that would be! I am hoping that MD and VA waited long enough to Start reopening that we don’t see a spike.

You are right about the walking miles- that is what I am realizing too!
Agreed about MD and VA. I just hope people don’t start to get lazy about everything!

Sounds like a challenging week, Lisa!
With your husband working more hours and Grayson changing his nap routine it’s not easy to stick to a schedule. Well done for getting all your runs and walks done!
Great that your COVID numbers are coming down!

Thank you! Its helped alot that I run so much with the stroller now. It gets us both out of the house:)

I feel you on the walking miles. I added mine in and was shocked how much I was walking, but they added up nicely for my Race Across IL so it’s all good. Like Coco said, it’s time on your feet.
It’s crazy how toddler schedules change! Hope G settles in to a more workable routine soon.

I was a little surprised to see how slow I was walking, but since its not a workout that is probably a good thing!

You are crushing your challenge! I hadn’t been tracking my walking until I started my state’s challenge, but I’m finding that the little bit that I do adds up to double digits each week. I notice that it feels really good on the backs of my legs that get a little tight from running.

      June 23, 2020 at 3:58 am

It seems like so many people are walking more these days, which is great! It’s definitely a good way to recover.

Great mileage for the week! It’s great that you can include walking miles but at this rate, you might not need to. #backupplan 🙂

Our COVID numbers are still going up which is a drag. Our state has mandated masks but so many people fight it. Our local paper reported we may have to shut things down a bit if we don’t stop the growth.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 23, 2020 at 3:59 am

I’m sorry to hear that 🙁 I hope the numbers go down. I’ve been reading that some places aren’t planning to shut down again even with as numbers are spiking. That worries me.

Nice job Lisa! For my Run Across Connecticut challenge we can also count walking and running. I think I’ll hit the goal based on my running miles but I’m keeping tab of my walking miles too.

I’m so happy to hear that COVID cases are dropping in Maryland – that’s awesome news! LEt’s hope that trend hits other states as well. I think we’re all overdue for some good news!

It seems like MD was really slow with reopening so maybe that helped. We also have lots of rural areas and the majority of the high numbers have been in the city and counties near DC. So it really depends on how everyone handles things in those more populated areas I think.

Wow nice mileage this week! I am doing a 10K steps challenge and walks and runs count. Why not count them? Hope those nap times continue for you! Thanks for linking up

A 10k step challenge sounds great! Might as well count those walks!

I definitely count my walks in my mileage…I actually walk more miles each week than I run so I would be in deep trouble. I signed up for the NYS 1000k from May 15-Aug 31. 6 miles a day. It will be a challenge. I think I should have kept to the 500k.

      June 23, 2020 at 4:02 am

Thats does seem like alot of mileage! Its great that you walk so much. The one thing I noticed about walking it how much longer it takes. And when you’re doing these challenges, it can take much more time to get in the same distance as running.

Great mileage this week Lisa! It’s kind of amazing how the walking miles really do add up if you keep track of it. Sorry to hear it was a challenging week and that Grayson seems to be in another phase now with less/less time napping. I can imagine it’s hard to have a good schedule.

I think mileage is mileage so if you need to add your walking miles for your challenge why not?

we did have some storms last week, yes! Typical Dutch weather.

good to hear your covid numbers are going down. Here as well. I’m happy but still being very cautious. We went to a local neighborhood pub last week that has outdoor seating to talk about our househunting thoughts. We also ordered food from a local friend who does catering to help her out a bit. Other than that I’m staying far away from people as much as possible still.

      June 23, 2020 at 4:04 am

Glad your numbers are going down too and that you could get out a little bit! It still seems smart to stay home as much as possible, but I think if people are comfortable doing a few things safely than it is probably good to get out a little!

  11. Kimberly Hatting says

    June 22, 2020 at 1:57 pm

I started tracking my “intentional” walking miles in the past year or so because I’m not usually just out going for a leisurely stroll through the ‘hood. I’m keeping a strong pace (anywhere between 14-15 min/mile), and my legs usually feel it (in a good way…great recovery after a long run). My Iowa race is 249 miles over 70 days, so I’m good with running that, but I’m also adding my walking miles because I want to hit the 315-mark. Shame on the peeps who shame us walkers LOL

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 23, 2020 at 4:05 am

My walks are not at a fast pace, thanks to pushing the stroller and stopping all the time! But they still add up to time on my feet, so I think its important to factor that into my mileage.

We’re actually pretty dry here; we could use some rain. We might get some towards the weekend, so right now I’m eyeing Friday for my long run this week.

I can’t imagine getting anything done with a young child! Good luck settling into your new normal with Grayson. Since my husband is home, he’s able to walk the dogs in the mornings when I run — because I really need to get out there early in this heat! I used to walk the dogs really early, then run, but it’s nice to have someone else available to help with them now.

      June 23, 2020 at 4:06 am

Glad you could figure out a good routine! Its nice to be able to get the runs done early before it gets super hot in the summer.

    June 22, 2020 at 7:27 pm

That sounds like a fun challenge! I’m doing a similar one for work across Minnesota. Walking is still time on feet, so I can definitely see how it adds a bit extra and you can be more tired than expected from it!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 23, 2020 at 4:07 am

Yes, exactly! I like differentiating between the 2 so I can see how I do with just running, but I also want to consider how much I am walking each week.

Awesome work! My teammate and I are over 50 miles in to our Florida Challenge, and I just picked up another challenge I need to do on my own. Wheeee!

    You’re doing great!

That is so exciting about your challenge! I am enjoying the one I am doing because it helps me get out there and run.

I don’t walk as a separate activity so my challenges only consist of running miles.

Lately the thunderstorms have not affected my runs since they have occurred later in the day.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 26, 2020 at 4:59 am

We’ve had a lot of late afternoon thunderstorms too. Its nice when they dont interfere with anything like running or commuting.
