We are already halfway through June. Can you believe that? And finally, I got what I’ve been asking for- warm weather. Sometimes a little too warm, but I’m not complaining (much). I love this time of year, especially right now when we still have some nice days mixed in with the super-gross-humid days. As I’ve thought back over the past few years, I’ve been reflecting on the magic of June running.
Other than 2016, June has always been a good month of running for me. (June of 2016 was when I initially hurt my foot/ankle. That issue stuck around for about a year and a half, on and off.) Last year I was starting to feel like myself again at 6 months postpartum. The year before I hit the second trimester of my pregnancy and running started to feel good again. Other years I was having strong comebacks from injuries and doing well in races. But besides all of that, it’s more just about the day to day miles that feel good.
This was a week of up and down weather. We had some really humid days in the middle of the week so when it cooled off on Friday it felt amazing. I even think Grayson appreciated the nice weather while riding in the stroller.
Here’s how the week looked overall:
Monday: Strength Training
Tuesday: 5 Miles + Glute/Hip Exercises
Wednesday: Rest Day
Thursday: Strength Training + 3.1 Stroller Miles
Friday: 3.5 Stroller Miles + Core Work
Saturday: 8 Miles
Sunday: 3.6 Stroller Miles + Hips/Glutes/Core
I’m not including my walks this week, but there were plenty of them. I’ll start including them in my recaps next week when I start the Race Across Maryland.
Weekend Running
Saturday was another nice morning for running. I got out early because Rob was going in to work in the morning, so I had to be home by 5:45. (I didn’t want to do my long run with the stroller). I ran 8 miles in the form of 2 progression runs. For the first set I started out around a 9:50 pace and got dow to 8:20 by the 4th mile. On the second set I started at a 9:07 pace and got down to an 8:05 pace. I would have probably run for longer if I didn’t have to get back home! However, I also planned to scale things back this week before starting my challenge on Monday.
On Sunday Rob joined us again and we did 3.6 miles. It’s nice to run with another adult once in awhile. We were talking during most of the run and I actually think it helped Grayson to stay entertained just by hearing us talk. Still, by that last mile he definitely needed some motivation in the form of a snack to get through the last few minutes of the run.
The Magic of June Running
As I said, usually June is a good month of running for me. This year I can’t pinpoint anything in particular that is magical but I am definitely enjoying my runs. They’re not particularly fast or long, but that’s ok. I just hope I’m not jinxing myself by writing this post in the middle of the month.
Quarantine Updates
We moved into Phase 2 here (I think we are in part 2 of Phase 2 now? I can’t even keep track anymore) so more things are opening up like indoor dining and gyms. It definitely makes me nervous. Our numbers have stayed low so that is good, but I just worry what we are going to see in a few weeks. All this opening up hasn’t changed anything for me though. I’m home by myself with Grayson every day and I am not comfortable bringing him anywhere. Besides, there’s nowhere I “need” to go. Although I could probably argue that I “need” a haircut and pedicure, but if I’m not seeing anyone I’ll be ok for a while longer.
We have Grayson’s 18 month well-visit on Thursday. This will be our first time going anywhere in the car since his 15 month visit in March! And our first time leaving our neighborhood other than the few times I’ve ventured away from home on runs. Will I even remember how to drive anymore?

Nice progression runs!
In June I usually have 3 races – I agree, it’s a great month to run.
We did our first trip in a car last weekend. Other than that, we were always at home, just like you.
In Switzerland, everything has been open for many weeks now (cinemas, zoos, restaurants, etc). The number of new cases is still very low – about 20 a day (8.5m inhabitants).
Let’s hope it stays that way.

Its so great your numbers have stayed low! Unfortunately many states have their numbers going up right now. It’s not a good sign for us 🙁

I agree, June is really a good month for a lot of things! The weather is still decent, everything is nice and green, and it just feels fresh. I like September too.
Not sure what phase we’re in either–phase 3? but a lot of people aren’t following social distancing guidelines. It’s been interesting.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I’ve heard the same thing about alot of people not following the guidelines. It sounds like people don’t believe its real or dont think they will catch it or are just tired of dealing with it. Not good.

I kind of hate to think it’s mid-June already. July 4 will sneak right up and summer will slip away. I love June for running, especially since we’ve had some cooler, not-humid days. Illinois is in phase 3 but here that means only outdoor dining and no gyms yet.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I also don’t want June and July to slip away! I am surprised we are starting to open up some indoor things. Our governor is just like “use them at your own risk”. So we’ll see how it goes.

Wow on not driving this whole time. I’ve still made weekly trips to the grocery store (barely 1 mile away) and few trips to the farmers market. I’m with you on staying home more than I have to, at least for a few more weeks.
I prefer spring and fall running, but so far June hasn’t been too bad. This June is so much different than last. I am running more than usual and last summer I ran less.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I kind of think June has felt more like spring than April did for the most part. It does feel different than past years though.

I have a hard time running in the heat, but I adore everything else about summer. We’ve had cool weather in the mornings lately so it’s really the best of all worlds right now. My state is pretty much open, though it feels like we’re still in the shutdown b/c we’ll be working at home through the fall at least. Before the shutdown it seemed totally reasonable that work was 30 minutes away but for the two times that I’ve had to go to the office since the shutdown now it seems like the longest drive in the world It didn’t take much to totally change my perception.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I don’t know how I will deal with a commute again! Or working regular hours! Or wearing real clothes! I mean this lifestyle is totally crazy and stressful but in some ways its nice to be home. No idea when I will be going back into the office yet.

Really great job on all of your workouts this week!
I always find that June weather can be so weird – it can be super humid like what we had earlier in the month, or it can be absolutely beautiful like it was this past weekend. You never know what you’re going to get!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Yes thats true! I guess the good days in June just stand out to me!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
I leave occasionally, not much. Our numbers are really low, knock on wood. It’s still a personal decision (one that I know most of my friends don’t understand).
June has a tendency to not be a great month for running for me typically. Most years it’s really cool and them bam! suddenly summer. This year has been year, but with no pressure from training and a cut back overall with running, in some ways it’s been a lot better than many years in the past.
That’s interesting about Grayson being entertained by your talking. Hope his well visit goes well (yes, you’ll remember how to drive).
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Haha thanks for your confidence in my driving! I’m glad your numbers our low. I am hoping ours dont go up now that more things are opened!

As you know, I’m all about summer running 😉 It dawned on me last week that with the solstice coming soon, the days will start gradually darkening, already! ;-( I wish the month of June (and July) could last a little longer each…
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Totally agree! I am not ready for the days to start getting shorter!
San says
Enjoy the June running… sounds like perfect weather for outdoor running where you are right now. And great job on the progression run… those are great splits!
Things are slowly starting to open up around here, too, but I am not at all ready to venture out… I go for my grocery run every two weeks and my runs in the morning and that’s pretty much it. There have been increases of infections around here again more recently, so I am not taking any chances at this point. I am so glad I can still work from home.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I am also really glad I can still work from home. It just doesn’t seem like its worth the risk to go out anywhere!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Great job this week for you! Awesome job in your progression runs.
I laughed when you couldn’t even remember what Phase you are in now because I am not sure either. I think we are in 3 and I mentioned that in another post but now I am not sure. All I know is that more businesses are opening up already.
I have gone out a few times to take my mother to the doctor and to the grocery store but that’s it. I want a haircut but can wait a few more months. I would like one before we go back to school.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I will definitely need to get my haircut before I start seeing people again. Just not sure yet when that will be!

i think May/ June are always good months for me. Usually we go to Liverpool for the Rock n Roll Half Marathon weekend in May and that’s always a great time – running is the bonus to seeing good friends and making a long weekend out of it all! June is usually great since the base is there, a Half has been run and it’s time for marathon training. It has been different over the past couple of years with two surgeries and recoveries in between but I still “feel”like these are really good months for me.
Same with September since there are always great events going on here. Of course this year is totally different…
we have some looser restrictions now and the numbers are NOT increasing which is good. Some people are just not going to take it seriously but I’d say most are. Ron and I have only been to have a coffee outside once at a local favorite cafe (also the owner is a running friend). I went to the supermarket 2 days ago for the first time in months! I also got my hair done (my stylist is also a friend and one-woman shop so I want to support her) but I’m skipping everything else. We’ve been househunting too and that’s always a bit awkward with distancing, not touching anything and not shaking hands!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thats good that your numbers aren’t increasing! We’ve been doing well over the last few weeks in our state but other states are going up now that restrictions are looser.

I agree that June is a great month for running. “The magic of June running” made me think of a time not so long ago (but it seems to have gone so fast since then) when my youngest twin boys were in preschool and we went to the zoo. We weren’t running but their preschool teacher told us to take it slow and easy and “enjoy being together in the June air.” Maybe that’s what we can hold in our hearts as we run through June. Take a moment to enjoy being in the June air. ❤️
