Race Recovery and Thanksgiving Week Things

While there wasn’t a whole lot of working out that went on last week, I feel like a lot of stuff happened in the 7 days since I finished the Route 66 Marathon. Plus, it was Thanksgiving week! Let’s back up to after the race. Rob and I finally met up back in the hotel room and it was already after 2pm. We showered, packed up our stuff, and grabbed food in the lobby.

Post- Race

I inhaled my lunch and then it was time to hop in our rental car and make the 2 hour drive to Arkansas where we were visiting Rob’s sister, her husband, and their baby.

finley

Monday and Tuesday were both complete rest days while we were there. However, on Tuesday it felt like we spent the whole day traveling (left their house at 9am central time and got home around 8pm eastern time). At least I got this big cup of red wine on our flight.

Back Home

On Wednesday we both went to work, which was very strange considering it was my only workday of the week. I had to go to the grocery store on my way home because we had nothing for dinner, and let me just say that it wasn’t a fun experience. When I got home I did about 25 minutes of easy yoga to stretch out a bit.

thursday

Thanksgiving

Thursday was Thanksgiving, and I couldn’t resist an easy run. I ended up doing 5 miles and felt better than expected.

thanksgiving

We went to my parent’s for Thanksgiving and I think the crazy week was catching up with us because we were exhausted!

Thanksgiving Weekend

I was off from work on Friday, and started the day with about 45 minutes of yoga that included some core work. I actually felt it in my arms quite a bit because I haven’t really done much yoga in months, other than an occasional 20 minute recovery session. I spent the rest of the day cleaning, which really should count as another workout.

saturday

I ran again on Saturday morning, once again without a real plan, but ended up doing 7 miles. This route was kind of hilly and I don’t think I was ready for hills yet. However, there isn’t much I can do to avoid them around here!

holiday decorations

We spent the rest of the day decorating for Christmas!

cookies

Sunday was another rest day. There wasn’t much rest involved though, because we went out to do errands and to look for bedroom furniture. In the afternoon I baked cookies and caught up on blogging. I have also tried to start my holiday shopping (online of course) but haven’t gotten very far! At least there are still a few more weeks to go.

3 rest days, 2 yoga sessions, and 2 runs this week. This was actually more than I planned to do, but it felt right. I definitely want to focus more on core and strength work this week, and will probably only run 2-3 days.

Have you started any holiday shopping yet? In stores or online?
Do your arms get sore from yoga?
What does your week usually look like after a big race?

Yes, cleaning should count as a workout! lol. My arms are always sensitive so I totally feel yoga, Pure Barre and any body weight workout in my arms immediately.

      November 30, 2015 at 7:27 pm

I did Pure Barre this morning and even though we only did arms for like 3 minutes I think I am going to be sore again from that!

Your week post big race sounds very similar to mine! I usually don’t run until it is a full week after, so I would throw in some spin sessions. And also maybe next time that you are recovering, send some cookies my way 😀

      November 30, 2015 at 7:27 pm

      You got it!:)
I think spin would have been perfect this week! That is definitely one of the downsides to no longer having a gym…

You really did bounce right back and had a great week! And yes my arms are always sore from yoga!

I am hoping I can keep up with it so it gets easier!

I think you were genius to schedule a marathon the week before Thanksgiving. Did you do that on purpose? 🙂 I scheduled my half 2 days before my 4th grade chorus program. Augh, what was I thinking!? Your living room looks beautiful all decorated for Christmas. 🙂

      November 30, 2015 at 7:29 pm

I didn’t do it on purpose but it worked out so well!!

I usually take about a week off after a big race, especially when I travel. Traveling simply wears me out! My arms are typically sore after yoga too.
Your living room looks beautiful! I would like to decorate my room, but seeing as I’m moving before Christmas I’m not going to bother.

Last year I took a full week off after my marathon but this time around I was just itching to get moving! Plus the weather was so nice, I couldn’t resist some running:)

Your Christmas decorations look great, the tree is the perfect size!

I haven’t started Christmas shopping yet, but I’m actually not worried. If I remember correctly I waited until the last minute last year too, but thanks to Amazon Prime I had everything on time! 😀 What did we do before Prime?!

    • [email protected] says

      November 30, 2015 at 7:31 pm

Thanks! I know, I really couldn’t imagine life without online shopping, especially amazon…and Prime just makes it even better!

I lile to take the week off from running after a big race and do lots of yoga and Pilates. It sounds like you had a great week and recovered well! I started Christmas shopping, mostly online through Amazon or REI. It just makes holiday shopping so much easier to do it online!

    • [email protected] says

      November 30, 2015 at 7:31 pm

Agreed- I never go to stores anymore! I am planning to do lots of yoga this week I think and maybe pull out some pilates DVDs!

  8. Jamie says

I ran zero miles the week after NY, mainly because I was just so physically and mentally exhausted. I will say I usually try to run a few times just to move the lactic acid. And any time I use my arms… yoga, showering, brushing my hair, they’re usually sore. Just shows how much upper body strength I have haha.

    • [email protected] says

      November 30, 2015 at 7:33 pm

Haha, I have definitely been sore from blowdrying my hair before! Last year I took a full week off from running after my marathon, but this time I really had the urge to get out there alot sooner. This week I’m less motivated to run, so not sure how many miles I’ll get in!

  9. Sarah @pickyrunner says

    November 30, 2015 at 9:27 am

I took a full week off exercise and 10 days off running which felt okay at the time but I think I jumped into heavy mileage too quickly after that because I never really felt 100% again. I’m glad you bounced back really quickly- it must mean you’re doing something right with all the “extras” 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      November 30, 2015 at 7:34 pm

I am definitely going to be running alot less for the next few weeks or so because I want to have time to fit in some different kinds of workouts. It’s weird to not be following any sort of schedule anymore!

Sounds like a fun, yet busy wk.
It’s always nice visiting family, but exhausting. Your neice is getting so big. I was pretty busy too, working and teaching fitness classes, so can’t say it was very relaxing. I managed to do 6 miles on Thanksgiving before my huge feast. But yesterday I hit my longest run yet. 21 miles. Hey what is the hydration backpack you use? And did it come w a bladder or was it sold separately? Your Christmas tree looks very nice! We also put our us this wkend.

  12. Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says

    November 30, 2015 at 10:05 am

It’s funny, I usually count yoga as a workout but this week the class I took didn’t feel so much so because I was not that sore when I woke up the next morning (my typical barometer). Then I wondered if I’m just getting more used to the flow we do in that class!

Sounds like a great week – it would seem odd to work only Wednesday though.

    • [email protected] says

      November 30, 2015 at 7:39 pm

There is such a range when it comes to yoga! The class I did on Wednesday was so short and easy that I hesitated to even call it a workout. Then on Friday I ended up sore!

  13. Suzy says

    November 30, 2015 at 12:35 pm

I usually wake up in the middle of the night to eat during the week after a big race. I would do that when I’m breastfeeding a newborn too! I guess our bodies just need that fuel back in our bodies. As for shopping, I found some fun stuff online that I’m going to get the kids. I don’t want to spend gobs of money on technology this year. I’m all about finding little things that will make them laugh, that they can wear or sip hot chocolate from or read throughout the year.

    • [email protected] says

      November 30, 2015 at 7:47 pm

That sounds great! I wish I could think of creative gifts this year. I would imagine its tough to shop for kids these days when it’s all about the electronics!

  14. Lizzy says

    November 30, 2015 at 12:40 pm

What a busy week! I agree that cleaning sometimes feels like an additional workout. Especially if any yard work is involved.

I’m only just barely thinking about holiday shopping and decorating. I feel like I need a “normal” week after my crazy Thanksgiving before I can get serious about Christmas.

    • [email protected] says

      November 30, 2015 at 7:46 pm

I kind of wish we had a few more weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas! This time of year feels so rushed.

  16. Lisa @ Lisa the Vegetarian says

    November 30, 2015 at 3:05 pm

I’ve actually done quite a bit of holiday shopping thus far! My fiancee’s birthday is at the beginning of December, so that motivates me to start doing all the shopping at once.

  17. Tara @ Running 'N' Reading says

    November 30, 2015 at 4:02 pm

You got in LOTS of activity I would say, Lisa! I’ll be interested to see how quickly I get back to running after my upcoming race; it sounds nice to have a break, but I can never last very long – ha! Your Christmas decorations look wonderful and I hope you had a good trip, in spite of all the driving. I have definitely started Christmas shopping, all online; I hate shopping in stores but I think it’s from the years of retail experience that I have. 😉 Hope your week is off to a great start!

I was thinking I would take a week off of running but since I was feeling good and the weather was nice I ended up heading out for a run a few days early:) But now I am going to keep the running to a minimum and get in some different kinds of workouts.
I used to work in retail in high school and college- the holidays were such a stressful time to work in the stores! I would much rather do all my shopping online:)

Nice job on the runs after your marathon especially with travel and a holiday! I did a little shopping yesterday with my friend which was a lot of fun. I love shopping for other people. Now we just need to get our tree up!

Online shopping for me! No Black Friday. The fact you felt good and were able to run 5 miles on Thanksgiving speaks volumes about how well you trained for this marathon. Congrats! I don’t do much yoga (I know, I know!). My arms are in OK shape from waterskiing all my life so I’ve never felt the need to really work them at all. The cookies look scrumptious. I appreciate you linking with us, Lisa!

    • [email protected] says

      November 30, 2015 at 7:45 pm

That’s awesome that your arms have gotten so strong from doing an activity you enjoy! I think I had more upper body strength when I was taking Body Pump classes regularly, but now that I don’t have a gym its much easier to slack on the arm workouts:)

  20. Sana says

      December 1, 2015 at 7:36 pm

I agree! I have done a few really easy videos at home that are somewhat relaxing, but whenever I go to a studio I definitely feel like its a workout!

When my arms get sore from yoga, I know I need more of it, which I do now. You had a big week! My focus now is strength and swim but I still feel guilty if I don’t run the usual amount. Some habits are hard to break!

    • [email protected] says

      December 1, 2015 at 7:38 pm

I said the same thing about yoga! I usually don’t get sore from the basic stuff. Its definitely hard to get out of the running habit! I have really been trying to do other stuff this week but I keep feeling like I should be running!

    • [email protected] says

Great picture of you two on Thanksgiving! I think I would be the same way just needing to get in a run. I haven’t done enough yoga in the last month to know. I know I should it is just one of those things I don’t do. Thanks for linking up with us this week Lisa!

Thanks! It can be really tough to keep up with yoga along with everything else.
