Route 66 Marathon Training Week 4

I guess I would say I am back into the swing of things with training after being sick for a while. However, my cough is still lingering and it definitely impacted my race on Saturday (more on that tomorrow). Here is how the rest of the week looked:

weekly workout recap

Monday: 5 miles easy, hip and core exercises

monday

Tuesday: 5 miles with 3 at MGP

tuesday

Wednesday: Total body strength workout and stretching/mobility

wednesday

Thursday: 5 miles easy, hip and core exercises

thursday

Friday: Rest

Saturday: Dreaded Druid Hills 10k plus 1.2 mile warm up

saturday

Sunday: 10 miles

sunday

Total: 32.4 miles

A slight bump in mileage this week, along with a longer race (so far this year I have only raced 5ks). Spoiler for tomorrow’s post: it didn’t go great, but the good news is I wasn’t really sore for Sunday’s 10 miler.

I have another race next weekend – the Charles St 12- so hopefully that will be a chance to redeem myself.

I feel like I spent the whole weekend running! But I did also get in some time at the pool- I can’t believe labor day is next weekend and the pool will be closing for the season! Where did the summer go?!

I don’t think I am ready for fall, I feel like the summer flew right by me! I didn’t go to the beach as often or even my pool as often. I am starting to wonder what I have been doing considering I have been so busy. Ha

That’s how I feel! Like what did I do for the past 3 months, but I feel like I have been so busy at the same time!

Sorry to hear you were sick, but glad you are feeling better. These are the drudge through weeks, and you are getting it done. I know the feeling of your whole weekend (or life) revolving around running, but that dedication is so worth it 🙂 Keep up the good work!

Thanks! I think it felt like a lot because Sunday is usually a rest day. But it is nice to have a day off of running during the week, too!

That’s great that you are finally feeling better! It was funny to see your post about the Route 66 Marathon training pop up in my inbox because I had JUST been reading about the race as a possible half marathon for my husband and I to do. It looks pretty flat. Do you know much about the overall event? Good luck with your training!

I am definitely not ready for summer to end. Our winter in Maine last year was brutal so I am soaking up every second of warm summer weather I can. But I have to admit, I do love the slightly cooler temps for running.

I’ve run Route 66 half twice. It does have flat sections but there are hillier parts too. It’s very well done and has lots of crowd support. You would enjoy it.

Agreed about the cooler temps for running! Its really the winter that I’m not looking forward to. I have heard good things about Route 66, but it sounds like there are definitely some hills!

I’ve bought a few pumpkin things, but I think more for novelty than anything. As is typically here in Chicago, we get a week of the upcoming season, and then it is back to the current season, so it is going to be hot and humid this week!

      August 31, 2015 at 2:12 pm

That’s how it is here too. I have a feeling the humidity this week will make me ready for fall weather…

I’m actually more than ready for fall! Just have to get past this week of temps in the 90s. You are definitely back on with training and it will only get better from here as the cough hopefully dies down for good!

I sure hope so! I am so tired of my breathing feeling off when I run. The weather this week is looking hot and humid here too!

I have mixed emotions about fall. I’m ready to run in cooler weather but it means I have to give up my beloved water skiing. It’s great to hear you are feeling better. Hopefully that cough will be gone soon. It looks like you had a very strong week of training. Good luck on your upcoming race and thanks for linking up with us today!

I’m glad you’re feeling better! I’m very ready for fall, and a big storm this weekend finally brought fall weather here. Most days this week will be in the mid-60s!

Great job last week!! I can’t stress the importance of the hip work you’re doing coming from someone with and IT band injury. I wish I had been doing more of it during my training. Can’t wait to hear more about the race!

    • [email protected] says

      August 31, 2015 at 2:15 pm

I am sooo not ready for fall! I feel like summer flew bad even faster than usual, so I would do anything for just a few more weeks of summer, booooo….

The cough is always the last to go for me, even when I feel better. 🙁 It looks like you had a good run week though. So glad you were not sore for your 10miler after your race that’s great! A lot of our pools close too after Labor Day but dang I really don’t know why, I mean we could very easily swim on into October even November around here. I am glad for Fall around the corner while our school schedule is in full swing we are still in the summer mode of staying up late. Guess that too will work itself out! Thanks for linking up with us and look forward to hearing about your race details! 🙂

You still had a solid week of good training. I experienced a drop in my mileage, too, this week. Maybe it’s good for your cough didn’t go all out on Saturday. A cough can stick around a while if you constantly run hard.
I’m so ready for Fall weather. The heat in Florida is unbearable right now!

      August 31, 2015 at 4:29 pm

So glad to hear you’re back in the swing of things! Great week! I’d take a few more weeks of summer if I could get them. It slips away far to quickly.

    • [email protected] says

Agreed! The winter months just last way too long.

  21. Lauren says

    August 31, 2015 at 7:43 pm

I need like another month of summer and then it can be fall. Not having work or school during that month would also be nice. I like fall but it never lasts and quickly turns into awful winter so yeah, that’s not cool.

    • [email protected] says

      September 1, 2015 at 9:21 am

I feel like same way! Although I am kind of over this humidity. True fall weather would be nice, but it always goes from super hot to cold in like a week.

  22. Kristina says

    August 31, 2015 at 8:32 pm

Whaaat, your pool closes? That’s such a northern thing. I go in the pool pretty much all year long, haha.

Sorry to hear that your 10 mile race didn’t go according to plan, but that just means you will be even more determined to make the 12-mile race this weekend perfect!

    • [email protected] says

      September 1, 2015 at 9:21 am

I mean I understand that the pool can’t stay opened in the winter but I think they could at least leave it open on the weekends in September:)

  23. Amber says

    August 31, 2015 at 8:57 pm

Nice job getting in the miles last week! Bummer the 10k wasn’t great, but to keep it in perspective, it’s not your goal race, it’s summer time, and those hills are NO JOKE. I was feeling a little down after the Balt 10 miler earlier this year, but the most helpful thing my bf said to me was “It’s not your goal race. You didn’t spend 16 weeks training for it!” It definitely helped to hear that 🙂
I have mixed feelings about Fall’s quick approach! Right now, it’s refreshing when I’m able to run outside before it really warms up past 75 degrees, but I think part of that is because I’m still sweating buckets on every other run outside. Once it’s October, I might already be over fall 😉

    • [email protected] says

      September 1, 2015 at 9:23 am

Thats a really good point about it not being my goal race!
I wouldn’t mind some cooler running weather, but I just really don’t want the cold, winter weather.

  24. Hailey says

    August 31, 2015 at 9:11 pm

Oh no, sorry about that pesky cough! Even though the race didn’t go the way you would have liked, it was still a great workout for your training! I’m super ready for fall. We just had another 110 degree day, so I don’t think it’s coming anytime soon, but at least I can start eating pumpkin flavored stuff and pretend like it’s nice out ha 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      September 1, 2015 at 9:23 am

Good plan! I couldn’t imagine the weather you guys have. I’m just over the humidity around here…

Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by back to back kid activities, so there was no time to post about it. (I ate breakfast in the car and lunch at soccer practice- it was that kind of a day.) I was kind of nervous going in to this run, especially now that I’m getting down to last few key long runs. I had 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles on the plan, which sounded manageable but also challenging. The weather was perfect and I hit all my paces. At the end I got a little confused- thinking I was at 15 miles but I was actually at 14 🙃 Got home and realized I chafed really bad. Another long run down, and another week closer to race day.

Do you ever psych yourself out before long runs?
