This was the first week I really felt like I was “marathon training”. I was tired from a race the previous weekend, had some harder workouts on the schedule, and bumped up my long run to 15 miles.
If you read my recap from last week, you’d see that I ran a 12 mile race on Saturday and an easy 5 miles on Sunday. This meant I was moving into this week already having semi-tired legs without my usual Sunday rest day. (The races have caused my schedule to be a little different lately). However, I still had a solid week although I was more than ready for a rest day Thursday!
Monday: 5 miles easy, hip and core exercises
Tuesday: 7 miles with 5x800s. It was a dark morning at the track, but I wore my headlight and my splits were spot on.
Wednesday: AM: 5 miles easy, PM: Strength workout with hip and core exercises
Thursday: Rest day (with some hip/core exercises)
Friday: 6 miles with 4 at MGP
Saturday: 15 miles with lots of hills!
I ran a route that took me back to Druid Hills, where I got to experience the hills from my race 2 weeks ago once again.
Then I spent the rest of the day in compression tights and socks.
Sunday: Rest day
Total: 38 miles
It was a good week, and I think it will be helpful to settle into a routine without any more races for a while. Part of me liked the weekday rest days, but I also really enjoy Sunday rest days after a long run!
This was also an interesting week with the weather. It was cooler earlier in the week, then the heat and humidity came back, but by the end of the week it cooled off again and Saturday was rainy. Hopefully the weather will continue to improve over the next few weeks!

What is your favorite day for a rest day?
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles says
I can never figure out my favorite day for a rest day which must be why I go by how I feel for when I need one/based on whatever else is going on in my nonrunning life. I am excited to run this morning because I think it’s cooler out than it’s been! It’s supposed to be hot again by the middle of the week.
[email protected] says
I usually like having a planned rest day to look forward to, but its also nice to take them randomly once in a while!
It was such great running weather this morning- I was actually a little chilly when I first got outside!
Michele @ paleorunningmomma says
I like Sunday rest days if I can manage it. As for the weather, I think it might finally be getting cooler and that makes me really happy 🙂
[email protected] says
Yes! Today was such great running weather, finally starting to feel a little like fall!
Tina muir says
Great job lady! 800s huh, I had those this week too, and they are a tough one to wrap your head around, but they make you so strong! You are going about training smartly, and I look forward to seeing how it goes 🙂
[email protected] says
Thanks Tina! I am more nervous about my mile repeats tomorrow!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Our weather is bananas. Finally supposed to be holding strong today in the 60s and clear, but I swear, if it is bananas for the rest of the Saturdays I will through the biggest hissy fit ever. And the one sunday of Race day it better be nice.
[email protected] says
I feel like I can’t even keep track of the weather anymore. This whole summer has been so random and unpredictable!
Beth @ RUNNING around my kitchen says
It cooled off here mid-week and was so nice this weekend! It looks like it might warm up a little again, but hopefully not too much. Running on tired legs is hard, but it’s so good for marathon training – it will pay off in those last 6 miles 🙂
[email protected] says
Exactly! I need to get used to that feeling again!
misszippy says
You are a beast for taking on those hills voluntarily! Looks like a nice, solid week of training. And this week should be amazing with this weather. I am excited!
[email protected] says
I actually wasn’t planning to do the part of the park that was super hilly, but I got turned around and there was no where to go but up! I guess it will only make me stronger, right? I’m definitely excited for some better weather this week!
Grace @ Diary of a Running Snail says
It has definitely cooled down where I am – for now at least. I heard this coming week is going to be a hot one again!! But am I ever enjoying the gorgeous cool weather while its here.
I am pretty adamant about Sunday rest days. There’s just something about Sunday that screams rest.
[email protected] says
Sunday rest days always leave me refreshed and ready to take on the week ahead!
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
Great week of training! Sunday is always my rest day, it just seems right and resting after a long run feels best. We had a few warm days but now it’s in the 50s-60s here – perfect fall weather!
[email protected] says
I am definitely looking forward to getting back into my Sunday rest day routine. 50-60s sounds perfect! Its still a little warm here but so much better than its been.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
Yes much improvement in the weather! Yesterday was just perfect running weather!
[email protected] says
This morning was perfect here! I bet yesterday was great for running too.
Heather@hungryforbalance says
We had a beautiful weekend here. I am loving the cooler mornings and evenings. Great job on revisiting the Druid Hills!
[email protected] says
Thanks! And I love this time of year when the mornings and evenings are cooler but the days are still warm:)
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Any day is a good day for a rest day. 🙂
We’ve had a lot of back and forth weather, much like yours. It’s cool & rainy today, but it will get warmer again — hopefully not quite so humid. One last long run for me this weekend!
[email protected] says
That sounds exactly like our weather- all over the place!
heather says
I had a few good runs last week. I am definitely seeing progress. The weather in Memphis cooled down over the weekend, but is expected to go back up. Running is not something that is easy for me. I really have to work for it. I have been running more hills lately as well. Have a great day

Nice job getting those hills- they will definitely make you stronger!
Marcia says
Strong training as usual Lisa! I just finished my last, big week before taper and I am all kinds of happy about that….although I’ve got Yasso 800s on tap this week. Nothing easy about those…
[email protected] says
Congrats on making it to the taper- always such a good feeling! But those 800s are never easy. I’m already super nervous about my mile repeats tomorrow!
Lesley says
I use Monday and Friday as my rest days as much as possible. If I need to shift things around due to busy weekends, I will, but I like taking those days off.
[email protected] says
I think its nice to have a consistent routine like that!
Jamie says
This mornings weather was perfect – 50 degrees! I can’t believe it. I feel like fall arrived over night 🙂 Favorite day for a rest day is Thursday… I like taking rest days during the week so I can have more time before and after work. But having a full day off on the weekend is nice too 🙂
[email protected] says
Thursdays are a good day for rest too! It definitely helps to break up the week a bit.
Tara @ Running 'N' Reading says
Lisa, we definitely had a nice break in the weather over the weekend; I was able to start my 12-miler in a temperature of 61 degrees, and that was quite a treat! I think it’ll all be over by Wednesday, though, which is kind of a bummer; we’ll be back to lows in the 70s and highs around 90 – ugh. You had a great training week!! Way to go!! Hope your Monday is off to a good start!
[email protected] says
I can’t believe it will be back in the 90s! That’s gonna feel so rough after being teased with this cooler weather for a few days.
Sara says
Last week’s humidity was awful! This week is looking amazing…but now I kinda don’t remember how to dress for cool temps. LOL. Last week was a step back week for me in my training, so I took it easy after the Chuck 12. This week I’m back on track and ready to get through the next two tough weeks before taper. Good for you for voluntarily going back to Druid Hill Park. You must be a glutton for punishment. 🙂
[email protected] says
Not sure if I will be going back to Druid Hill Park anymore! I got turned around when I was there and basically forced to go up some of the toughest climbs. And then it was mostly uphill getting back home.
Annie R says
Totally hear you on the Sunday rest days, they’re my favorite. Also, where are your compression tights from??? I’m looking for a new pair and I’m having trouble finding some that I actually like.
[email protected] says
They’re from PRO Compression! Not only do they have socks but also tights and leggings- I love all their products!
Alyssa @ Renaissancerunnergirl says
I think I would enjoy Sunday rest days, but my school schedule used to make it so weekdays were more practical and now working will too. It just wouldn’t make any sense not to use a weekday when I might have to work a 12-14 hour day as the rest day!
[email protected] says
It definitely makes sense to plan your training around work and school!
Suzy says
I think my favourite part of this blogging thing has been watching you come back from injury and just seeing your training go up and up with your mileage, your races, etc. It’s pretty inspiring! You’re so dedicated, especially with the track work (head lamp, so early in the morning, etc). You’re incredible.
[email protected] says
Aw thanks! Its also pretty inspiring to read about you just casually running a 3:06 marathon on top of a 70 mile week:)
[email protected] says
15 miles with hills….ugh. But good job! A great training run for your upcoming marathon. I would’ve spent the day in my compression socks too after that one. And some wine:)
[email protected] says
Yep, there was definitely wine after that run:)
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
Great week of training for you! I’m actually looking forward to this week being my first official marathon training week. I do love my rest days on a Friday! Sundays are normally rest days for me too but I’ll usually end up taking an active rest, even if it’s only walking. I love pulling on a pair of compression socks after a hard race or training run too! I love your hot pink ones! Thanks so much for continuing to link up with us, your so inspiring with your training! 🙂
[email protected] says
I think active rest like walking is so great! I think it helps when I go for a walk the day after my long run otherwise I find my legs get really stiff. Thanks for hosting the link-up!
Rachael @ Catch Me if You Can says
I love sunday rest days, great way to recharge before the week starts again. Your sunrise pictures are so pretty! My runs normally finish before the sun comes up so I dont get to see them as often as I would like. I like sunrise/sunset 🙂
[email protected] says
Now that it’s staying dark for even longer in the morning I may start missing the sunrises too! I definitely love sunrises and sunsets as well.
Victoria at Ice Packs + Races says
All about hanging out in my compression socks post-run (and hot shower)! The weekend weather in DC (especially Sunday) definitely says fall is coming back. I’m not complaining 🙂
[email protected] says
I literally got in the hot shower immediately after my run on Saturday, and then into compression! I was soaked from the sweat and rain. I hope the weather stays like this- I don’t think I can handle any more humidity!
Sheena @ Paws and Pavement says
Nice job on your long run! All last week was my rest day due to injuries but I’m on the mend. I like Wednesday for a rest day or Friday because I’m a “weekend warrior” as they call it.
[email protected] says
Wednesday rest days are definitely a good way to break up the week! Right now Wednesdays are usually my strength training days so I get a break from running.
HoHo Runs says
I see you ran with your Camelbak on your long hilly run. I like mine, but sometimes that extra weight is a nuisance. I think I drink too often when I wear it too. Mondays are my favorite rest day. Transitioning back to work is a workout in itself. I’m going to miss running Route 66 this year, although I guess there’s a possibility I may do the half. My sister lives in Tulsa. You had a great training week! Thanks for linking up with us today!
[email protected] says
I agree that the weight can be annoying! But I definitely feel like I need water on my long runs and I get annoyed carrying something in my hand. I probably drink too much water when I wear mine too!
Hailey says
Awesome job on your 15-miler and 800s! I love taking Saturday’s off, but I’m going to switch it around when my long runs pick up, so that I don’t have a day off before. I think running on legs that aren’t “fresh” will help with my marathon training…hopefully ha 😀
[email protected] says
Agreed! its always good to practice running on tired legs:)
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Thank goodness for the cooler temps! Sounds like you are back in the swing of things! I’ve been running on tired legs and it really seems to be helping. In fact, my coach believes more in that than running a 20 mile run. I’ll be lucky to hit 18!
[email protected] says
There is definitely something to be said for that! I am so excited to see how you do wit this type of training!
