Running At The Shore

The title of this post may be a bit misleading. I wasn’t running at the beach or really even by the water. I was though, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where it’s nice and flat but just as humid as Baltimore. I’ve been traveling to that area for 3 years now for work, so I more or less know my way around and have found some spots for running. While I was away I took advantage of having a little more time in the mornings to get in my runs.

Last week I traveled to the shore for work which meant a change in scenery for my runs. Here's how my week went which included running, strength training, yoga, and spinning. #workout #running #fitness

Other than that the week was pretty standard. I got in my two strength sessions, a yoga session, and a workout on the spin bike. I ended up moving my Saturday run to Sunday  because Saturday’s weather was super dreary and rainy. Plus I was tired from traveling and running an unexpected 5 miles the day before.

Monday: Strength training + 20 minute spin bike

Rather than starting out the week with a run, I gave my legs an extra day to recover after feeling sore over the weekend. It worked out anyway because I could get in all my cross-training before traveling at the end of the week.

Tuesday: 3.1 miles + mobility

My legs were feeling better after 2 days off running, but the weather was pretty humid for this run. At least there was a bit of a breeze that made it not quite as bad.

tuesday run

Wednesday: Strength training + Yoga

Yoga sessions really feel so good these days. I chose a video that focused on flexibility. The goal was to prepare to do splits by the end, and while I was nowhere near a full split I did feel like my hamstrings and hips were much looser.

Thursday: 4.2 miles

I was all over the place on Wednesday, first at one work conference about 45 minutes from my house and then I drove straight to the Eastern shore for my annual work “retreat”. I got there at a decent time and was able to get a good night’s sleep, so I woke up on Thursday ready to run.

The hotel I stay at is basically on a highway, so I drove a bit down to the road to start and end my run at a Panera. I ran a 4 mile out and back that somehow flew by. And of course I was rewarded with Panera breakfast at the end.

thursday run

Friday: 5 miles

I knew it was going to rain on Friday but I couldn’t stand the thought of running on the hotel gym’s treadmill. It was cloudy when I woke up so I got dressed and drove down the street again for my run. I planned to do 3 miles, and it started drizzling right around 2 miles. When I got to 3, I decided to keep running to 4, and after 4 I figured why not do 5? I had the time and weather wasn’t too bad. However, when I finished my run my watch said I needed 3.5 days to recover! So I must have been working harder than I realized.

friday run

Saturday: Yoga

I figured I would give myself a day off from running just in case my watch was right and I needed some recovery. Besides, it was dreary and rainy, plus I was tired from traveling.

I did get myself to do some yoga later in the morning, which felt good after being stuck at conferences and driving all over Maryland this week.

Sunday: 8 miles + mobility

I had a bit of a hard time getting myself out the door for this run. I’m used to relaxing on Sunday mornings! I got started around 6:15 and it was already really hot and humid. My pace was slow but I got it done.

sunday run

Overall it was a pretty good week, and I finally feel like I am sort of acclimated to the heat. I liked running somewhere different for a change, especially a place without any hills. I start my next phase of strength training next week, which likely means I’ll be sore once again! Oh well, at least I’ve found that yoga really helps!

Do you travel for work? If so, do you run while you are away?
Do you like having a change of scenery for your runs?
Do you ever move around your weekend runs for better weather/to let you legs recover?

Great week of workouts! I love how you improvise your schedule for recovery and location (Panera run – brilliant.) I travel a good bit for work and in most cases, I love using running to explore. Looks like you had a pretty nice setup with flat routes, which is also one of my favorite things about traveling!

It can be a bit stressful to run while traveling for work, but usually its well worth it!

I don’t travel a ton for work but when I do, I always pack workout clothes to try and squeeze a run in. Keeping some part of the routine the same makes the travel a bit easier.

As you know, yes I travel for work ALL the time! This week I actually have off so I am heading down to the beach to see some friends. Hopefully I will get a few runs in while I am there.

I do like new scenery, and I do switch up my runs for better weather. I remember last fall, it was incredibly cold and windy the day I supposed to do my 6 miles, and I delayed it for a day. While the next day was a little windy, it wasn’t near as bad as the day before.

Sometimes its really a good idea to switch around days due to weather!

I love having a change of scenery for my runs! Running in different locations is a must so I don’t get bored with the same routes. Luckily in Tampa Bay area there are plenty of popular running places to hit up if I need to change it up.

I wish I had more places to run here! If I want to run different routes I have to drive somewhere, which I usually avoid.

Nice week! I’m glad your acclimatization is going well. I get so bored when I run the same routes week after week so I really enjoy mixing it up and exploring somewhere new. I don’t travel for work often, but when I do, I always try to squeeze in a run when I can!

I dont travel much for work but if I did, I would bring my running shoes and at least use the gym! I would like a change of running scenery sometimes although now that I run so much less, I don’t feel as burned out from my usual neighborhood route as I did in the past!

I think it’s GREAT that you were flexible with your schedule because of your work travel! way to get things done!

I do like a change of pace occasionally. especially with the really long runs. otherwise I get a little bored! It’s funny how everyone in the US does the long run on Saturday! I’m totally used to hitting the pavement early(ish) on Sunday morning. No one does their long run on Saturday here!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 26, 2018 at 5:19 pm

Do you mean in Baltimore? I just stay pretty much in my neighborhood. It’s pretty boring! When I lived in Federal Hill I loved running around the harbor, Fort McHenry, Patterson Park…there were so many options!

Great job in getting some runs in while traveling! I’m glad I don’t have that feature on my Garmin. In this oppressive heat/humidity, I’m pretty sure it would tell me to not run for daayyyssss after every run! 😉 It’s fun to run in different places but I admit I also worry a bit about not knowing how safe it is. Thanks for linking.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      June 27, 2018 at 7:04 pm

The watch feature can definitely be annoying at times! And I agree about the safety when traveling. I did lots of googling before and stayed around the main town/hotel where it seemed safest.

When I’m running regularly, I always find new routes when traveling for work! My work trips always include more food and drink that I would prefer, so it’s great to start the day healthy and refreshed.

Good for you for squeezing in all those miles. Very impressive week 🙂

I don’t travel for work but I do get bored with routes in my town. I’m lucky that I can hit the coast for some pancake flat running or head north for some trails and vert. It’s a good mix!

That sounds like the perfect mix of running routes!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
