Running and Blogging Frustrations of the Month

After being all thoughtful and serious in Tuesday’s post, I wanted to take some time to share some not-so-serious running and blogging related things. During the time I was working on my site not really posting I started a list of random frustrations that I felt the need to share. I am just hoping I can remember what I wanted to say because my notes are sort of vague! (Does anyone else write down ideas for posts and then not remember what the heck they meant?)

Running Clothes/Gear Frustrations

First of all, I feel like my running socks keep disappearing lately. They turn up eventually but for days I am convinced that the washer or dryer ate them. This morning I found one inside a pair of leggings that had been washed. Maybe I just need to check everything more carefully as I am folding my clothes.

Speaking of laundry, it’s that time of year where the clothes just pile up. Both Rob and I have been running more and wearing more layers. Cooler weather has also meant just more clothes in general. We typically don’t do laundry during the week because I hate having to fold it at the end of the night. By the time the weekend rolls around we have a ton to do.

Something weird was happening for a while with my running shoes. My right foot would feel like the laces were too tight or fitting weird. It happened with every different pair of running shoes for a few weeks. I tried loosening the laces and lacing them different and it still happened. So far this week it hasn’t happened so hopefully that was just a weird phase!

Usually in the fall I find myself moving pretty quickly from shorts to tights. I felt like I never really got a chance to enjoy the “in-between” period when capris were ideal. This year though, I have been wearing them for ALL my runs and workouts (I don’t like to bike in shorts and it’s too warm inside for full tights.) I think I have 4-5 pairs so I am constantly running out of them (see above for note about only doing laundry once a week). However, I do think this signifies what an amazing fall we are having and I really don’t want to have to make the transition to full tights!

Technology Frustrations

I have never been so frustrated with passwords. Every day I am resetting a password for something. I just can’t figure out a good system to keep track of them because I am never in the same place when I want to log in somewhere. The more I reset it–> the more likely I am to forget it. Why do we need to make passwords so complicated? If I can’t even figure out how to log in to my own stuff I’m not sure how anyone else would figure it out.

There are a few things I just haven’t been able to figure out with my blog and I am trying to just stop worrying about them (they are pretty minor). There are only so many times you can search a support forum or try to chat with someone from a hosting company before getting too frustrated and giving up. I’m pretty sure that Bluehost and Bloglovin probably have me on some list for putting in so many support request in a 2 week period.

Tech Support

  • Do your running socks disappear? Do they turn up eventually?
  • How many password have you reset this week? (I am thinking 4 so far for me)
  • Do you like running in shorts, long tights, or capris? What have you been wearing for outdoor runs lately?
  • What frustrations have you faced lately?

I cannot deal with the blog issue stuff. in fact, I just said to someone the other day, that if right now I encountered the issues I had back in September, I would just give up! I swear. I just couldn’t do it all again. if the issues are minor, it’s so not worth the level of frustration for you! and I think bloglovin is the worst with support. they never understand what I am saying and tell me things that aren’t correct.

I actually had a really good experience with Bloglovin support! I felt like they just did things for me and made it easier than trying to walk me through steps through E-mail.

I get your blog on my bloglovin! So there is that, at least 😀 I feel like my underwear is disappearing. I know I am wearing it… but why isn’t it in the laundry…

That’s a problem! Maybe Ridley is hiding it?

I wash all my socks in a lingerie bag so they don’t get lost while doing laundry. I don’t spend $15 per pair for them to be eaten by the dryer!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 2:48 pm

That’s smart!! But really, where do they go when they are eaten by the dryer. They have to be somewhere!

I have a note in my phone where I write every password down. If I didn’t do this, I wouldn’t be able to open anything. The only thing I need to remember is my phone lock code and thankfully, there’s touch ID for that 🙂

      November 12, 2016 at 2:49 pm

Thats smart and I really need to start doing something like that! I just think I will always forget to update it when I change a password.

These things should be much simpler than they are!

I haven’t ever had a running clothes issue – because I do small washes of just my stuff and immediately hang it up … and it is just my stuff (no one really wants to put their stuff in with my sweaty smelly running clothes!) But given it is just Lisa and I now, laundry SHOULD be simple, but I had half of a pair of socks go missing for almost two weeks! And I STILL can’t find the 3/4 zip NYU light running sweatshirt I got last year! Ugh!

I have put away my capris at this point (only have one pair). I still keep a pair of shorts in the bathroom but am working with light and heavy tights now – today was ~25 with winds pushing the wind chill lower, so it was heavy tights, but still not close to full winter layers. 🙂 I like it a bit warmer.

I have a basic system for passwords, but sometimes even that doesn’t work, as some places are very restrictive in terms of structure, variation, expiration and so on. Ugh. 99% of the time I either know or can guess within 3 tries, but occasionally not. No resets THIS week (so far) …

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 2:52 pm

With the laundry, I do feel like my lost stuff eventually shows up (usually it gets caught up in another piece of clothing or stuck behind something). I know it will only get worse as it gets colder and they layers keep getting heavier!
I definitely have a few go-to passwords, but I hate when I get it wrong too many times and have to reset to something different. Then I have to figure out something new and end up confusing myself later on!

If I need to break up my laundry, I’ll wash my athletic gear that doesn’t dry or can’t dry. I hang them to air dry, then don’t put them away until the weekend. Or pull them off the drying rack to wear again.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 2:53 pm

I know its bad but I put almost all of my clothes in the dryer! I try to take out my compression socks but sometimes they make it into the dryer when I don’t see them.

  8. Schlub says

    November 10, 2016 at 11:01 am

Omg lost/misplaced socks drives me CRAZY. I’m pretty particular about my clothes so when I have mismatch socks or mismatch socks, I can’t stand it lol.

I keep all my passwords in a safe location because I have a TON between work, my personal accounts, and wife accounts. I would be in the same boat if I didn’t keep track of them.

I prefer shorts but it’s getting cold so I’ll be switching to pants soon. Race day I always wear shorts no matter what.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 2:54 pm

I refuse to wear mismatched socks! I have some that are labeled L and R for left and right, and if I put those on the wrong feet it drives me crazy! I definitely need a better system for the passwords.

I am notorious for jotting down writing ideas while I’m drinking wine and then when I go back to it the next day, I have NO IDEA what I was referring to. It’s better if I just sit down right then and there and hammer out a post, wine and all.

I especially hate losing the good quality ones that are expensive!

My socks are ALWAYS disappearing! Sometimes they turn up, and sometimes they don’t. It’s so frustrating.

I wear everything — shorts (indoors only), skirts, capris, tights. I’ve managed to avoid tights so far, but not for much longer, no doubt.

Thankfully I haven’t had to reset a password this week. I just love Time Warner, they have a habit of shutting down our email account with no advance warning. Which always requires a password reset.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 2:56 pm

I have a feeling I will be wearing tights before long as well! I almost wore them today but was glad I didn’t because it ended up feeling warmer than the temp was supposed to be.

  12. Michele @ paleorunningmomma says

    November 10, 2016 at 8:27 pm

I’m currently waiting on 3 running socks (all different) to magically appear and I’m not so optimistic! Funny you mentioned this because I’ve never had this issue quite so bad until recently. I’ve also been wearing mostly capris which is unusual for me, must be the weather!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 2:57 pm

I do think the weather has been perfect for capris but I have no idea why the socks keep going missing so much lately!

  13. Sarah @ BucketListTummy says

    November 11, 2016 at 8:19 am

YES running socks disappear allllll the time! I’d say we find them 50% of the time. Blogging and technology is something I will never be able to understand. I think your new blog looks great!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 2:58 pm

I end up finding most of our missing socks but in our apartment we lost too many to count. There was an area behind our washer/dryer and I am pretty sure alot of them got stuck back there!

  14. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    November 11, 2016 at 8:24 pm

Haha! Yes, my running socks disappear and suddenly they reappear. I think they end up stuck to one of my boys’ shirts and they put them in my room. Sometimes its my underware. Imagine the horror of finding your mom’s undies stuck to your shirt…Oh the pain…

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 3:02 pm

Haha oh that is pretty awful! One time I pulled out my towel at a yoga class found a sock stuck to it. I was really glad it wasn’t underwear!

I was just saying to my husband the other day we need to move to a universal password that uses eye recognition, fingerprint or something because my passwords are a freaking mess. I just can’t deal anymore!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 12, 2016 at 3:03 pm

That is such a great idea! I hope that happens at some point soon.

  16. Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says

    November 13, 2016 at 8:25 pm

I hear ya. I am always resetting passwords. I try to keep the same ones and only change it by a letter or a number. I hate doing laundry. But I do not think I have any more than what I had in the summer. I guess from the layering aspect yes, but I do not feel like my clothes get as disgusting as they did in the heat of the summer when I was sweating nonstop during my runs.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 14, 2016 at 7:17 pm

Thats a good point about the laundry- less sweat means the clothes arent quite as gross!

  17. Madhuri says

    November 15, 2016 at 4:16 am

Although I love technology, I hate that off late, all sites want super complicated passwords and usernames…I have a word document on my desktop. It has the username and password of all the sites…and that’s password protected…So typically, I got to remember only that one 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2016 at 5:03 am

Thats a really great idea! I would just need to figure out a way to have access to that file on my home and work computers. Maybe Ill try setting up something similar on my phone since I always have that with me.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
