A Snowy Start to Spring

This week brought the official first day of spring, but it certainly didn’t feel like it around here! It was a snowy start to spring, with everything from ice and sleet to cold temps and wind to over 8 inches of snow. Let’s hope that winter is gone for good now!

Even though the calendar said it was spring, it still felt like winter here. Click post to read about my workouts last week, which were mostly on the treadmill because of snow and winter weather. #running #workouts

As far as workouts, I spent some time on the treadmill this week wishing I was somewhere warmer. I was feeling really good and went with it, but by the weekend I could tell my body was getting a little worn out so I backed off. That’s one of the nice things about not following a plan- no pressure to get in certain workouts on certain days!

Monday: 5 miles

This was such a good way to start out the week. Coming off a tough weekend of running (a race on Saturday and 10 miles on Sunday) I kept this nice and easy. It was great to be outside especially because there was no wind! The weather was in the upper 30s and I got to run a little later than usual so I saw some sunlight.

Tuesday: Strength training and 3 miles

After a spring-like day on Monday, winter returned on Tuesday. We had rain, sleet, hail, and wind. Early in the morning wasn’t too bad but I couldn’t get myself outside in colder weather after the beautiful run I had the day before. Instead, I kept it indoors where I could pretend I was running on a beach in Australia.

Wednesday: 10 miles

I ended up being off from work due to the weather on Wednesday (it snowed all day) so I ran 10 miles on the treadmill. Because why not? Probably not the smartest move but it actually felt pretty good.

Thursday: Strength training and 20 minutes spin bike

Finally, a day off from running! I finished off Week 6 of Phase 5 of my strength training plan. In the next phase I will be working on speed to help with the shorter distance races. I’m not exactly sure what that means but it sounds good to me!

Friday: 4 miles

Just an easy 4 start the day. I used iFit to pretend I was running down by the Inner Harbor. This was one of my favorite routes when I lived in the city!

Saturday: Rest

It’s rare that I take a Saturday rest day, but it kind of makes sense. Saturdays end up being a pretty active day outside of working out because I meal prep, clean, and do errands.

Sunday: 8 miles

I was really hoping for better weather for this run. It was 30 degrees, felt like 22, wind in all directions, and ice still on the sidewalks. While it did feel good to get outside, I’m just so over winter.

Let’s hope that now we are done with the cold, snowy weather now and we can move on to spring.

Ohh I love the inner harbor. That would be a nice treadmill distraction. Great job with your workouts! We also got hit by the storm (but only got about 4-5 inches of snow). I hope that was it for the winter! Do you write your own strength training programs?

I follow a strength program from Running For Real! I wrote a post about it here if you’re interested: https://www.milebymileblog.com/review-of-running-for-real-strength-training-program/

I’m so with you- this week is looking better. Hopefully spring will be here for real and stick around. Great week of workouts!

I’m seeing lots of rain in the forecast, but I guess that’s better than snow!

The forecast this week does look promising. Fingers crossed for some warmer conditions!

    Have a great week!

We didn’t have snow since I live in Charleston, SC, but we did have a terribly cold start to spring. And windy. I’m over it! This week looks slightly better, but still not as warm as normal for us. Good job on those workouts in spite of the weather!

It’s definitely not as warm as usual here lately. I’m hoping it warms up for good!

Looks like another great week of running for you! I’m so over winter as well…yesterday’s run was miserable in the icy wind…when will it be warm again?!

I’m hoping that we’re done with snow until later on this year. It’s still pretty cold here, but I can deal with that if it means no more snow. That sucks that you had to deal with so much wind on your run yesterday 🙁 Good job on pushing through it!

      March 26, 2018 at 5:56 pm

Thanks! It’s so different when its 30 degrees and windy vs 30 degrees and calm. Hopefully both the wind and snow will go away now!

Pretending to run on a beach in Australia sounds way better than cold, snow, hail, and ice 🙂 I remember those days of doing long runs on a treadmill – they weren’t my favorite but I do think they strengthen your mental game!

      March 26, 2018 at 5:57 pm

A few months ago I could barely handle 4 miles on the treadmill, so it was pretty surprising that 10 came pretty easily last week. I guess Im getting better at distracting myself on there!

  8. Lesley says

I worked a little extra on Monday last week, so I left work a little early Thursday, then did almost 4 miles. I’ll be working from home on Tuesdays, coming up, and since I won’t have to commute, I might be doing my long runs on those days.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 26, 2018 at 5:57 pm

We had some snow this week which was an unpleasant disruption to spring. I hope your weather is better this week! Great week of running! Those mid-week long runs can be fun – if I have the time and energy, I like them!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
