Spring Running in February

Monday again? How did that happen? These weeks are just flying by. This one in particular felt more like April than February. I was so glad to be out running again! The warmer weather really got me in the mood for spring running. Not sure if this is an early spring or not, but I’ll take what I can get. Yay for spring running in February!

60 degree mornings in February? Not typical Baltimore weather at all. But it did make for some great running weather!

Weekly Workouts: Spring Running in February

Monday: 45 minutes spinning + lower body workout

This lower body workout included a lot of glute and hip exercises like bridges and clamshells. Also did squats, lunges, calf  raises, and stability ball hamstring curls.

Glute workout
Tuesday: Upper body workout+ 25 minute run/walk

First real sunrise run of the year! The sky was on fire, so it worked out that I was taking plenty of walking breaks anyway so I could take pictures.

Sunrise run
Wednesday: Lower body workout + core/stability

Similar to Monday’s workout, but just warmed up on the bike for 10 minutes, and added in core work and foam rolling at the end of my workout.

Thursday: Upper body workout + 30 minute run/walk

Pretty much the same as Tuesday. No sunrise though because it was cloudy! However, 55 degrees at 5:30am? No complaints there!

Thursday run
Friday: 30 minutes spinning + Pilates for Runners DVD

I wasn’t really feeling the bike, but its easier to get through it when I just mess around on my iPad the whole time. This meant my workout was less intense, but at least I got in a little cardio. I also did my Pilates for Runners DVD. I really need to do this more! It always leaves my hips burning and includes core work, push-ups, and balance exercises too.

Friday bike
Saturday: 4 mile run + 20 minutes yoga

For this run I ran at a pretty tough pace and then just stopped to walk when I got tired. (The walking wasn’t counted in my mileage). It definitely felt more normal than last week, but still a little off. The yoga videos I did were focused on core and hip stability. Loving this spring running in February!

Sunday: Rest day

I can’t believe tomorrow is the last day of February! I’ll be looking back at the month and starting to think ahead to March in my next post.

The weather last week was ahhhhhmazing!!! Fingers crossed it stays around for a little bit longer. I’m not ready for later upon layer again.

Agreed! A nice smooth transition into spring would be lovely.

Yeah! So glad you had a more normal week and got in a few runs in nice weather!

It’s been summer like here, which is so killer. Every day has been in the mid 80s lately and it feels wayyy too early for that. I remember reading last fall that we would have a warmer than usual winter but I didn’t think it would be this bad! :'( I’m worried that summer is going to just be scorching since it’s already so hot!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 27, 2017 at 8:03 pm

That’s awful! You should start taking trips up north in the summer to get a break from the intense heat.

You know I LOVE a good sunrise! And that, my friend, is a great sunrise. Can we talk about how it is almost March? When and how did that happen??

      February 27, 2017 at 8:04 pm

I have no idea how that happened! The past few months have flown by.

That’s a great idea.Sometimes I just need to distract myself when I’m working out.

This weather has been so amazing! I’m going to be sad when “real” winter comes back- but I’m sure it’s not done yet.

Great week of workouts! Like you, I’d enjoy pushing the pace on the run with walk breaks over a slow, steady pace.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 27, 2017 at 8:05 pm

Sometimes it’s nice to just focus on running harder! I think its good to run different paces and right now I can’t run really hard without walking breaks.

It definitely has not felt like February the last week, I hope it’s here to stay. That sunrise is beautiful!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 27, 2017 at 8:06 pm

I hope so too but I have a feeling winter’s not quite done!

Yes, the spring weather was awesome! Now that Feb is over, I’m counting down to April!! As a teacher, April and May are my favorite months. I’m sure you can imagine why…

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 27, 2017 at 8:06 pm

I still love April and May even though I dont work in a school anymore!

Oh, good. I’m glad you had a good week! The weather helps. Our weather has been awful. We haven’t had this much snow in decades. and snow is on the forecast all week this week right into next weekend. IN MARCH. Tragic.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 27, 2017 at 8:07 pm

Snow in March is just rude. I hope this is the last you see of it this year!

    February 27, 2017 at 10:57 am

We had almost summer weather here this past weekend with temps hitting in the 80s, but of course now it went down about 30 degrees. I think I would rather run at a moderate pace continuously rather than taking walk breaks. I feel like it is harder to run again after taking that time to walk.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 27, 2017 at 8:08 pm

Thats a good point- sometimes I feel that way too. But for this run I just had the urge to run hard but couldn’t do so without occasional walking breaks.

I love that it’s light in the morning, but then Daylight Savings arrives in two weeks. I haven’t seen the sunrises yet, but the sun is quite powerful when I’m driving to work. I head east to start, so the sun is right in my eyes.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 27, 2017 at 8:09 pm

I hate when the sun is in my eyes while I am driving! Im not looking forward to DST. I’m really enjoying the lighter mornings!

That sunrise is gorgeous. I love sunrise/sunset, people get sick of my instagram because I take them so often lol.

Hard/moderate Running depends on my workout. When you’re doing speed work it feels good to stop and take a little walk break lol.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 27, 2017 at 8:09 pm

I agree, it depends on my workout too. And how Im feeling that day. Sometimes I just want to run easy and not stop, other times it feels good to run really hard but I may need breaks once in awhile.

We were pushing 70 last Tuesday but then winter blew back in. That said, it’s back in the 50’s today so I cannot complain at all. Kind of makes me wish I had a spring marathon to train for.

  17. Jenn says

    February 27, 2017 at 8:38 pm

I’m a pretty dedicated run-walk-run devotee, so I’m good with the walk breaks. I wish I could go longer without walks, but even at my most moderate pace, my throat/windpipe just doesn’t allow me to breathe consistently enough to make it happen. What can you do?

Weather has been a mess here. I don’t know what’s going on. Hoping to see a beautiful sunrise tomorrow!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 28, 2017 at 5:16 am

Yes the weather is beautiful here and I have lilies everywhere! You had a great week of workouts- very impressive! I like to run at a moderate pace and just keep it going. Once I stop it gets tough to get it all going again 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 28, 2017 at 6:06 pm

It can definitely be tough to start running again after a walking break!

  24. HoHo Runs says

You captured a stunning sunrise. I usually end up messing around with my phone on I/G or reading blogs while on my bike trainer. And, I always cycle faster when I’m doing that. So — I keep doing it! Something about taking walk breaks messes with my head. I lean toward moderate paces with no stopping.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      February 28, 2017 at 6:07 pm

Thats interesting that you cycle faster when you are distracted! I hope that works for me too!

I think it’s spring here in western NC as well…I’m loving it but makes me nervous about how hot summer may get?! Nice workouts! Smart lady to do those bridges and clamshells! 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 1, 2017 at 5:04 am

I am also getting nervous about summer! I just hope we actually have a spring and it doesn’t get ridiculously hot in April.

  27. Tricia says

You know my hubs has been back running, he does intervals all the time pretty much and is doing great. He can run harder then rest to run harder again.
I know when I do speed drills my pace is just as good if not better than trying to run the whole time so there is truth to this method!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 2, 2017 at 6:52 pm

I definitely think alot of people can benefit form the run-walk method for all sorts of workouts!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
