The Running Goes On

It’s been quite a few weeks around here. Between cold, allergies, and lots going on at work, I missed sharing my workouts last weekend. Despite all the craziness, the running goes on. Well it did for the most part. I definitely had to back off and take some extra rest days, but getting out there helped me get through some of the tough days. But even though the running goes on, unfortunately the coughing does too.

Well it did for the most part. I definitely had to back off and take some extra rest days, but getting out there helped me get through some of the tough days. But even though the running goes on, unfortunately the coughing does too.

Weekly Run Down: The Running Goes On

Since I missed last week, I’m going to share my workouts from the last two weeks. I won’t get into too much detail about them because they really weren’t anything exciting!

Monday 5/10: Strength Training + 4.7 Stroller Miles

This was when I started to notice my allergies get really bad. I was still fine running, just uncomfortable in general. Grayson had been coughing all weekend (he had never really stopped since the last time he was sick) so I took him to the pediatrician. I’m glad I did because he got a little worse. They said it was just another cold but swabbed him for COVID anyway, which came back negative on Wednesday morning.

Tuesday 5/11: 4.5 Stroller Miles + Core

I was still dealing with allergies and not sleeping well. Each night either Grayson would be up coughing or I would be up because of my allergies.

Wednesday 5/12: 4.3 Stroller Miles

I barely slept the night before, so I didn’t run early like I had planned. We decided to keep Grayson home from daycare since he was still sick. I had to change around a bunch of stuff at work, which set me behind. And I was so exhausted all day.

Thursday 5/13: Strength Training + 4 Treadmill Miles

We sent Grayson to school but since I was getting worse and starting to cough I worked from home. I got in my workout early but after my run my cough was pretty bad and I was thinking I shouldn’t have run.

Friday 5/14: Rest Day

Another school day for Grayson, and work from home day for me.

Saturday 5/15: 3.6 Stroller Miles

I knew I wasn’t up for a long run but wanted to try a short easy run, so the 3 of us headed out with the stroller. Not my best idea. I was coughing the whole time and felt awful. At least by this point in the week I was sleeping better!

family run

Sunday 5/16: Rest Day (40 minute walk)

Knowing I had a busy week coming up, I went to urgent care to get checked out. They tested for the flu and did a rapid test for COVID- both came back negative. I was given a presciption for cough medicine and told to switch to Zyrtec from Claritin. Then I spent way too long at the pharmacy getting my prescription filled. It was an exhausting morning, and then I spent a few hours trying to get some work done.

Monday 5/17: Strength Training +4.7 Mile Stroller Run

The medicine helped a little and I felt better. My run still felt harder than usual and I took walk breaks.

stroller run

Tuesday 5/18: 6 Miles + Core

I had a training all day and Rob stayed home to watch Grayson. I got in 6 early miles and felt a little better. Mostly just coughing after I finished my run. (And then all day.)

Wednesday 5/19: Strength Training + 4 Miles

Usually I do my runs on the treadmill after I lift, but with the extra daylight and warmer weather I wanted to get outside. Plus it was nice to get fresh air before working inside all day!

Thursday 5/20: 5 Miles + Core

This was the run where I started get paranoid about the cicadas. I ran over some dead ones but didn’t see any flying around.

stroller running

Friday 5/21: Rest Day

It was my first day back in the office in 2 weeks! I was still coughing but there were only 2 other people there, who knew I’d been sick for weeks and had tested negative for COVID.

Saturday 5/22: 10.10 Miles

I needed this run! I still wasn’t feeling 100% but I definitely felt better. My biggest issue on the run was a runny nose. I’m starting to feel like I’m never going to be healthy again.

10 mile long run

Sunday 5/23: 3.7 Stroller Miles

We got out for a family stroller run and it was already in the mid 70s by 7:30. I don’t know if if was the heat, or still recovering from my cold, or the long run the day before, but this run was a struggle! Still felt good to get out there though.

So as you can see, the running goes on. So does the coughing and the nasal congestion. Before I get over this I’m sure Grayson will bring something else home from daycare, so I might as well get used to feeling sick! It’s been frustrated but it could be worse. At least I can still run and honestly I’m just glad to be getting sleep at night again! That was probably the worse part for me at the beginning of all this.

Anyway, hopefully next week there will be more talk about running and less talk about coughing! The running goes on!

Oh, I hope you feel much better soon, Lisa! My husband really struggles with allergies. I know it’s more annoying for him than me, but I was trying to listen to something and literally couldn’t hear it due to his coughing at one point. It seems to have been a little better lately.

I spent all Winter feeling as though I would never feel 100% again, everytime I felt better something else would crop up but knock on wood lately I’ve been feeling good and running has felt much better — even with the heat.

I’m sure you’ll be feeling yourself soon!

I know you had a rough few months too! I don’t remember allergies ever making me feel so bad for so long. Of course this weekend I was outside more and now I’m sneezing like crazy again!

oh how annoying that you are still suffering from allergies. Mine have gotten much better and I feel like I am ok until fall ha. The cicadas are another story this week!

I actually don’t get allergies in the fall usually! I just can’t believe that they’re still so bad this year. I was outside alot this weekend and am sneezing non stop again. But yes the cicadas are actually worse than allergies in my opinion!

Sorry you haven’t been feeling 100% The cicada casings are unavoidable around here, but I haven’t seen any buzzing around on my runs. I hear them though — it’s like a fleet of UFOs hovering over our neighborhood!

I hope you have a good week!

I’ve definitely been hearing them too! I saw a few flying around when we were at the playground yesterday. Seems like maybe they fly more in the middle of the day and in certain areas? I hope they can come and go without bothering us too much!

Oh no 🙁 I hope that you feel better soon. Dealing with congestion can be so difficult, especially when trying to run. Everyone I know that suffers from allergies is having such a hard time this season. Hopefully things get better for us soon!

Thanks! Its definitely been a tough year for allergies. Just when I felt like my cold was improving I spent alot of time outside this weekend and started sneezing nonstop again. Ugh.

I need some cicadas pics! It’s fascinating.

I’m so sorry you’ve been so sick Lisa. That is a bummer. I hope you get some relief very soon! It’s such a tough balance as I know we want to run as it makes us feel better, but then how much should we rest? It’s tough…Sending healing vibes!

If I get brave enough I’ll take some pictures!
Thank you! It is tough to know how to proceed especially when its been weeks of a lingering cold/allergies. At this point I don’t think running is making it any worse, so I’m just going with it and keeping things pretty easy.

My nasal gunk has lasted far longer than I thought it would. Thankfully, it’s just the thick stuff (sorry for the TMI), so I haven’t had a runny nose or even a sore throat from drainage. No coughing either. And, it’s almost gone, so I really can’t complain (though I just did LOL). I sure hope you’re feeling better, and Grayson as well. It’s no fun when things keep getting passed back and forth.

It’s so annoying when this stuff lasts for a long time! I’m glad you’re feeling mostly better. Now I just hope we can get through a few weeks without him bringing anything else hope from daycare!

    May 23, 2021 at 8:56 pm

Oh I’m so sorry you’re still coughing and not feeling 100% back to normal. Daycare is just brutal for germs. Allergies are especially bad this spring as well.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 24, 2021 at 4:44 am

Yes I feel like both are just a terrible combo! I knew he would probably get sick but I guess I didn’t think about how I would probably get sick as well!

  8. Jenny says

    May 23, 2021 at 8:59 pm

That is THE WORST, when you’re not feeling well and your kid(s) won’t allow you to sleep. I remember some very rough patches like that. Sounds like things are looking up. You must be over the worst of it or you wouldn’t have been able to do that 10 mile run. I hope things continue to improve this week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 24, 2021 at 4:44 am

Thank you! I do think I’m over the worst of it. Although I feel like whatever is outside is still affecting my allergies because I’m back to sneezing after being outside all weekend.

  9. Erin says

    May 24, 2021 at 6:49 am

I’m so glad you are feeling better! I can definitely relate to the daycare illness situation, the week before Easter my 2 year old brought home a stomach bug and in the next week it also took out me, my 6 year old, and both sets of grandparents. How my husband escaped it I’ll never know! Just a curiosity but for many of your runs you noted feeling exhausted or worse than you did when you started. Why didn’t you just take at least 3-4 consecutive days off exercise to allow your body to rest and get over being ill?

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 24, 2021 at 3:26 pm

The daycare germs are the worst! Somehow my husband hasn’t gotten sick either time that my son brought home a cold, and I’ve gotten it both times.
So I probably should have taken a few more days off…I’m probably just stubborn! But the exhaustion was from not sleeping well, so I would have been tired anyway and since I had my son home I felt like running would help me get through the day. Usually I am fine with taking a bunch of days off when I’m sick, but I think I was just feeling annoyed that I had JUST been sick at the end of April and took almost a week off then, and since I didn’t really feel “run down” I took it day by day and chose to run most days…sometimes regretting it after. I don’t really think it hindered my recovery, but if I could have truly rested that may have helped. However as I’m sure you know true rest rarely happens when you have a toddler:)

Still lots of stroller miles. Congrats on that long run.

My allergies have been horrible this year, especially annoying as it’s very rainy at the moment, so how??? My eyes have been running even with pills, nasal spray and eye drops, so irritating. So well done to you for doing what you’ve done!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
