The View from the Sideline

This weekend was the Cleveland Marathon. For the first time I got a view from the sideline, rather than participating in the race. It wasn’t so bad (kind of fun actually) and I got to see Rob at 6 places during the race and also got to cheer on Rachel! Oh, and Rob hit his goal time and PR’d by 11 minutes! I’ll share more about the race later this week. I just wanted to pop in with my weekly wrap before we head back to Baltimore.

Weekly Recap: The View from the Sideline

Monday: 30 minutes core-focused strength training

I did a lot of work with these bands, which challenge my core and balance. I was planning to do the bike but didn’t have enough time.

monday strength training

Tuesday: 3 mile run/walk, Run and 10 Core workout
tuesday run

Wednesday: 1 hour strength training

I mostly used the TRX for this workout and also added in some mobility work.

trx plank

Thursday: 3 mile run/walk and Run and 10 Glute workout

By Thursday by allergies were pretty bad, and I felt like I had to sneeze the whole time I was outside. I don’t really sneeze while I am running for some reason, but for the rest of the day I was sneezing quite a bit.

Friday: Run and 10 Upper Body DVD, Foam rolling

We took a half day to leave for the drive to Cleveland. In the morning I tried to get some blog stuff taken care of so only had time for a short workout.

Saturday: 4 mile run/walk

I did a run/walk around Rob’s parents’ neighborhood. It was nice and flat, and I found a good loop to take.

Around 10 we headed downtown to the expo, and then just hung out at his parents’ the rest of the day so he could rest up.

Sunday: Cheering on Rob in the Cleveland Marathon

This was kind of a workout. I spent most of the morning driving but was also running to and from my car so I didn’t miss him. I ran a half mile in the pouring rain at the end to try to see him at the finish line…with a backpack and umbrella which was being blown all over the place by the wind. So I’m not calling this a rest day:)

cleveland marathon

I know this upcoming week is going to be a little crazy as there is a lot going on and we are getting back Monday afternoon (so a short work week). I hope to share more about the race in a few days, but I can’t make any promises. Thanks to everyone who wished Rob good luck on Instagram! He told me that one of the reasons he kept running was because he knew I would be posting about his race on my blog. So you all motivated him!!

Who else raced (or spectated a race) this weekend?
Anyone else dealing with spring allergies?
Are you motivated by knowing you will be posting about a race on your blog/social media/etc?

congrats to rob again! I can’t wait to hear all about it. I am sure that knowing you would be writing about his marathon was motivation! Allergies are pretty bad this year. My son can’t stop blowing his nose even with the allergy medication.

Ive managed to avoid taking any allergy meds because I don’t like how I feel on them. Ive just been sneezing alot so I feel like I can handle that.

Way to go Rob! It sounds like the weather wasn’t great but you pulled out a big PR anyway!

And awesome job coach! Can’t wait to hear more!

Thanks so much! Yea, the weather wasn’t ideal but at least the rain held out until the end, so I think by then it felt good for the runners.

Glad to hear you guys had a good weekend. Can’t wait to hear how the race went for Rob! I bet you were happy you were just a spectator and not running it if it ended up raining!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 22, 2017 at 3:39 pm

It was definitely a weird feeling to not be running, but so much less stressful!

Congrats to Rob! Isn’t it SO gratifying as a coach to see him do so well? Can’t wait to hear more. Looks like a strong week for you. I agree that spectating can be very grueling. Allergies have been tough this season here too. I don’t sneeze much but the itcy watery eyes and scratchy throat drive me nuts.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 22, 2017 at 3:40 pm

For me its just been sneezing, so I can handle that. When other symptoms start up thats when I start taking allergy meds (Ive avoided them so far this season).

Its a strange feeling to be cheering and not racing, but I think it was nice to get a different perspective! I also found it to be much less stressful.

Go Rob!!! That’s awesome he crushed his goal. 🙂

I agree, spectating is NOT a rest day. Paul always brags after cheering for me at a race because he’s so tired from “clapping at least 200 times” 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 22, 2017 at 3:45 pm

I know, my hands were so tired from clapping after like 5 minutes! So then I just held up the sign I made and cheered instead.

  12. Lesley says

    May 22, 2017 at 1:36 pm

I only spectated once, and it was pouring rain. I was under shelter for a majority of the race, but thankfully it ended so I could walk over to the finish line in time.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 22, 2017 at 3:45 pm

Weird, I commented (I think!) early this morning, but either I did something wrong (certainly possible) or it got held back.

Anyway, congratulations to your husband! And I do appreciate the effort of spectating. I once spectated my husband’s Ironman. I tried to tell him that cheering on athletes for 13 hours was almost as hard as doing the race, but he didn’t buy it. 🙂

      May 23, 2017 at 5:06 am

Oh no, sorry about the comment! I check my spam pretty regularly and its not in there. Not sure what happened.
I think that spectating an Ironman would be exhausting! And as spectators we don’t even get a medal:)

  18. Jenn says

Allergies are the worst. We’ve had some really bad fires in the area, so the smoke is also working its way into the mix.

    You had a great week.

I haven’t spectated at a race in a while, but I will be in a few weeks, for little man.

Looks like you had a great week of training and congrats to Rob!! I’m okay with allergies but I had a terrible sinus infection the week before my last half. I’ve never run a race so sick. All of my kids are suffering from allergies right now. Hope you have a great week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 23, 2017 at 7:28 pm

So glad that the race went well for Rob! Congrats on that hefty PR too! I enjoying being a spectator at races. It’s actually quite a job figuring out the logistics of seeing your runner at various points and getting around! I think spectating the Boston marathon was more fun than running it in the rain was 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 23, 2017 at 7:29 pm

Congrats to the hubby! I think it would be fun to just be a spectator and watches your family and friends give it their all! It is very cool that you were able to get around and see him from a couple of points in the race- nice job!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      May 23, 2017 at 7:30 pm

I think being able to move around and see him a bunch of times made it more fun for me. Im sure I would have gotten bored staying in the same place for 4 hours!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
