Thinking Out Loud #15

Well its Thursday again which means as usual its time to think out loud! Let’s see, what have I been thinking about this week?

Running

Aren’t I always thinking about running? This week running has been really good. Besides the little foot scare earlier in the week, I have felt great. I hit all my splits right on target for Wednesday’s workout and my body has been cooperating nicely. But really, I think it has a lot to do with the weather. While it’s gotten a little warmer as the week has progressed, it was in the 60s early in the week and felt perfect. Plus, I’ve been catching these awesome sunrises. Another week that has helped me to remember why I love running so much!

Foam Rolling

I have to give at least some of the credit for my awesome runs to my new foam roller. (By the way- I’m guest posting today about foam rolling over at Michele’s blog- The Paleo Running Momma!) Last week my new foam roller was delivered- the Trigger Point Grid X aka my new torture device. It hurts but I get my foam rolling done much faster because I start to feel it right away. Some of my muscles have actually been sore from this thing. I guess maybe you adapt to using a foam roller and after a certain point it doesn’t help as much anymore? Who knows, but at this rate I’ll be using some sort of steel rod within the next 2 years.

Labor Day

How is it already almost Labor Day? I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again- WHERE DID THE SUMMER GO?  I feel like I was just waiting for summer to start. Anyway, the one good thing is that there is no Grand Prix in Baltimore this year! I dreaded Labor Day the past few years because it made things crazy downtown with road closures and tons of traffic. But instead, we get to have a new casino opening downtown as well as Orioles and Raven’s games…so I’m sure there will be plenty of traffic anyway. I guess that’s what you have to come to expect living in a city.

Wine

I’m writing this post on Wednesday, I’m already looking forward to having some wine on Thursday night. I just have to survive my 800s Thursday morning- yuck.

Missing Socks

Yup this is a random one but I think its something we can all relate to. The only socks I really wear are running socks, and they are all pretty different so each has a specific match. Well lately I have been convinced that my washer has been eating them. I think I lost like 3-4 over the past month. And I have the ones with L and R on them (Have you read this article?) and I keep losing the right socks and there is no way I’m wearing two left socks. Just the thought on wearing different socks on each foot makes my skin crawl, and I definitely couldn’t wear a left sock on my right foot. Luckily last night I found one missing sock in my yoga towel!

sock

I found it at the end of class because I didn’t open the towel all the way. I’m really glad it didn’t fall out during class- that would have been weird and embarrassing.

What kind of foam roller do you use?
Do you lose as many socks as me?

My mom is the same way about socks! She goes through and marks L and R on them. I have 12 pairs of the same socks that I like, so I just put whatever ones I find first on.
I don’t foam roll, yet! I just use the stick and it works pretty well for where I am now. Your new roller looks intense, though.
    Beautiful sunrise shot 🙂

Luckily I don’t have too many pairs of the same socks so I always know which ones go together! (Or I might need to start writing on them!) The stick is great, too! I just need a roller or lax ball for my glutes:)

I’m always losing socks, too! I don’t know how it happens, but it is a chronic problem. I don’t foam roll… I know I should, but I don’t own one (yet) and whenever I try, I feel like my arms get tired from holding my body up before my legs really feel it! Embarrassing, but there it is.

My arms get tired too…its kind of annoying! But I tell myself its an arm workout haha! Now that I have a denser roller I feel like I don’t have to do it as long so thats nice!

Losing socks drives me nuts too! I want to tear apart the clean and folded laundry just to find it!

That sunrise is gorgeous..:good luck on your 800s!!

I usually go through the laundry but still can’t find them. I sometimes find them behind the washer but its really dark back there and hard to see. Other times they turn up in the weirdest places! Oh and sometimes I find them behind my dresser drawer (like inside the dresser behind where the drawer pulls out). I have a feeling whenever I move out of this place we will find alot of running socks:)

I am always losing socks…and underwear. And I usually find the underwear stuck to random things like dish towels.

      August 28, 2014 at 10:24 pm

Hahah well I guess I should be really glad that it wasn’t my underwear that I brought to yoga class the other day!

We keep finding socks in the most random places. I am convinced that Zoe steals them (originally I thought it was Alex, but now, I’m thinking Zoe) For a while I had a few pairs that didn’t have partners, but then, about 2 months later (no joke) I found the mates and my little ark of socks was made whole again. Good think that I hung on to them!

      August 28, 2014 at 10:26 pm

I usually hang onto my solo socks for a while and hope that they turn up. At least you have Zoe to blame it on! Rob seems to be even worse than me with losing socks, so I think there must be someone who comes into our apartment and steals them.

I haven’t ran hard in awhile, which means I haven’t foam rolled in awhile. Major facepalm/life fail. I’ve got a happy hour with a friend tonight, so today I’m thinking about how much I’ll enjoy that much deserved Thursday night cocktail!

    • [email protected] says

      August 28, 2014 at 10:27 pm

Yay for Thursday night cocktails! And if you don’t feel like you need to foam roll than that’s awesome! (even if its because you haven’t run hard….I won’t tell)

Before I read the article you posted I thought you meant you labeled your socks R for Rob and L for Lisa haha 🙂 and yes I lose socks all the time…I always keep the lone sock in hopes of finding its match and then give up and throw it out a few weeks later.

    • [email protected] says

      August 28, 2014 at 10:29 pm

Haha one time my mom saw me wearing socks with L and R and asked if it was for Lisa and Rob! No, we don’t wear the same socks so we don’t need to label them:) I usually hold onto the solo socks until I clean out all my clothes…which is like twice a year…and then give up and throw them out.

That is too funny about your sock! I cannot stand it when I lose a sock!! That is so frustrating! Can’t wait to head on over and check out your guest post!

  9. Chrissy @ Pink Polish and Running Shoes says

I use a basic foam roller that I bought at Dick’s. I’m not sure how I survived without it before, but I’ve only had it for a few months. I lose socks all the time too. I swear they go in to the wash together, but every couple months I end up buying new socks or wearing mismatched ones, which is kind of embarrassing…even at the gym.

    • [email protected] says

      August 28, 2014 at 10:31 pm

Haha I don’t know why but I just can’t handle wearing mismatched socks, even if no one can see them!

those sunrises are epic! Perhaps that is what is missing from my runs, its still dark in the mornings when I run!

    • [email protected] says

      August 28, 2014 at 10:31 pm

I love this time of year for sunrises! It can be really depressing in the winter when its still dark out by the end of my run.

  11. Hilary says

    August 28, 2014 at 2:51 pm

Seriously, it’s always the right sock that goes missing! I’ve actually wondered if I could get my favorite sock company to sell me just a package of right socks… But they would probably think I’m a weirdo. Hope the 800s rocked and enjoy some wine tonight!

    • [email protected] says

      August 28, 2014 at 10:32 pm

Hahaha that’s not a bad plan. I hate throwing out the solo sock of a pair that I really liked!

  12. Caitlin says

    August 28, 2014 at 2:57 pm

I hear you on the foam rolling thing…I bought a stick after I didn’t feel any difference when I used my regular foam roller consistently….boy did that make a difference! A trigger point foam roller is next on my list…but I’m also content to hold off on that as long as possible 😉 I need to be a little better about using my stick, though. I think my legs will recover better if I am more consistent with it!

    • [email protected] says

      August 28, 2014 at 10:35 pm

I really like the stick, too! I just need the roller for my hips and glutes, which always give me the most trouble. I actually feel like the stick is alot easier to use and faster than a roller. Plus it travels well:)

  13. Ashley @ Kick Ash Mom.com says

    August 28, 2014 at 3:34 pm

That foam roller looks killer. I just bought a 6 pack of socks and I think I already lost half. My socks never match.

    • [email protected] says

      August 28, 2014 at 10:36 pm

The roller is pretty intense! You can tell just by feeling it that it will be painful.
I wish I could handle non-matching socks, it would make things so much easier:)

  14. Kristina says

    August 28, 2014 at 4:39 pm

I would LOVE to know where all of my missing socks are! They must all be hiding out together someplace with my two missing UA running capris!! 😀

Enjoy your glass of wine tonight!

    • [email protected] says

      August 28, 2014 at 10:37 pm

Haha definitely! I think when I move out of my place we will find dozens of socks around…with all the matches already thrown out:(

  15. Sam says

    August 28, 2014 at 10:53 pm

I love the name of your blog!

To answer your question, I lose socks all the time. I’ve started buying the exact same socks in packs so that they are easier to keep track of 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      August 29, 2014 at 8:44 pm

Thanks! And that is a great idea! Maybe if I did that I wouldn’t care as much if I lost a few.

  16. Cheryl says

    August 28, 2014 at 11:29 pm

Where do I start with the socks? Is it bad that in my family the girls (myself included) don’t match. We just pull two out and go. I think it is back lash from the school dress code.
I don’t care with my running socks if they match. The left/ right thing makes me think twice though…

    • [email protected] says

      August 29, 2014 at 8:45 pm

I wish that I didn’t care! I mean it really shouldn’t matter but I would get really annoyed if the socks felt any different- that would drive me crazy! I’m sure if makes things a little easier to just wear whatever you can find!

A new foam roller looks great. I need to get a new one. The one i have is a cheapy golds gym one that literally has an indententaion on it from rolling. Have you heard about the new one coming out this fall that vibrates? I know, summer has gone way too fast! Can’t believe it is almost over.

    • [email protected] says

      August 29, 2014 at 8:46 pm

Wow no I have not heard about a vibrating foam roller! That sounds intense! I will need to wait a little bit before upgrading to anything like that!

You need to check out the R8 Roller from Roll Recovery, I think I may have commented on that before. The BEST roller out there. I got rid of both of my rollers and will probably get rid of my stick because of it. Pricey, but SO worth it!

I do really want to try it out! I’m thinking about asking for it as a gift either for my bday or Christmas. Thanks for recommending!
