Thinking Out Loud #18

Happy Thursday everyone! I’m at a conference today and tomorrow, so likely won’t be reading any blogs and will hopefully catch up a bit over the weekend. But as usual I’m here today for some Thinking Out Loud!

1. So how great has this weather been lately? I realize if you are reading this you may not live near me, or have weather at all similar to how it’s been in Maryland. So my apologies. Maybe you have great weather all the time. It’s not very often that we have  good running weather, so I feel like I have the right to brag a little. Sunday’s race weather was amazing and we were even able to turn off the AC and open the windows this week. So from here we will either get another random heat wave, or it will suddenly jump right into winter weather. I’m just trying to enjoy this while it lasts!

2. Another thing that makes running great besides good weather is new running shoes. I ordered a pair of Pure Cadence 2s from DSW back in April even though I didn’t need them because they were so cheap. At the time I already had a pair of Pure Cadence 3s that I had just started wearing. Now that those are getting older I broke out the new pair of 2s and I was reminded how much I like this version. I don’t think I really love the 3s and I notice that when I wear them on my long runs my ankles get sore, which is weird. Not sure what I am going to do moving forward because its getting harder and harder to find the Pure flow 2s and the Pure Cadence 2s. First world problems, right?

3. Wine tastes even better after a race. I was really craving a beer after the 5k on Sunday- and I thought that there would be beer at the finish. (When I signed up I thought I had read that DuClaw would be there, but I guess things changed because that was back in May). So I waited until an appropriate hour later than 10am and then got into some wine. First I was somewhat productive and did some cleaning and blogging stuff, so I definitely earned it. Plus, Monday was a rest day.

wine I wasn’t thrilled about sharing:)

4. One good thing about the weather cooling off is that I won’t have to get in a fight with my hair every morning. It gets tangled into this ridiculous knot that is impossible to comb out. And I haven’t figured out any other ways to wear my hair while I run except in a ponytail. Some days I need 10 extra minutes to get ready just to get my hair untangled.

It’s really hard to take a picture of the back of your own head.

5. I skipped yoga AGAIN this week. Instead I got a manicure and drank wine. And I don’t even feel bad. Things have just been too hectic to expect to do everything. There’s always next week. I had a gel manicure from a few weeks ago so I didn’t want to take it off myself (aka pick it off) so I got a regular manicure which will probably only last 2 days.

Haven’t tried taking a picture of the back of my head but that would be tough 🙂 the things we learn though blogging, right?

We’ve also had amazing weather, but of course it will heat up just in time for my half on Sunday. Glad I wasn’t planning on racing it because now it’s impossible 🙂

Sorry to hear that the weather didn’t stick around for your race. Well actually I don’t know how the weather was for you but hopefully I will read about it soon!:)

New shoes are the best! I need to order some soon. I have been seeing pure cadence 2s and pure flow 2s on sale at Dick’s lately, maybe they’d have some near you?
Fall is my favorite running season! The leaves are starting to turn here and I’m so excited. I can’t wait until they fall and I can hear the crunch beneath my shoes. It reminds me of cross country days.

Thanks- I will have to check out Dicks for the shoes!
I also love fall running so I am starting to get excited…not for the winter though!

I always feel insane when I say it but food really tastes that much better after a race or a good long run. I don’t understand it but it is always the case…I can’t even get into the sneaker issues at the moment, why certain models feel weird at certain mile points and what the heck I am going to do right now with my Adidas situation. I think I need the new model but maybe I don’t and I am afraid to switch brands lol.

It’s amazing how much better everything tastes after a hard workout or race. And sometimes I end up craving the most random things!
I am so nervous to ever switch brands of running shoes! I don’t know what I will do if the Brooks pure line stops working for me!

  4. Susie @ SuzLyfe says

    September 18, 2014 at 10:49 am

I”m having the same problem with my shoes–they are totally worn out, but a) not enough time to get new ones b) they don’t make this model anymore (and haven’t for a year) so c) I’m pretty much effed. And the weather has been perfect for running of late. I’m terrified of what is to come!

      September 22, 2014 at 9:34 pm

Maybe you can find a random pair of the version you like somewhere? You probably have enough time to break them in if you know that they work for you.
I know what you mean about being afraid of what is to come with running weather! I’m just trying to enjoy it while it lasts:)

Our weather has actually been a little warmer than I prefer this past little while, which is craaaaaazy for us up here considering it’s almost always cooling down by this time of the year. That being said, last week we had snow, so anything can happen. And I think wine and a manicure are just as beneficial as yoga — it’s all about relaxation, right? 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:35 pm

Wow last week snow and then warm weather? Sounds like you get crazy weather just like us:) I’ll never forget the year it snowed it October and then we had the warmest winter EVER.

  7. Meg says

    September 18, 2014 at 12:19 pm

weather here is warming up… we having our winter here in SA but it doesn’t snow here so i cant really complain too much about our winter. i love my wine and after a run you so deserve it! p.s I am so happy to hear I am not the only one who wants to peel gel nails off! 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:37 pm

I am thinking that I really need to move to a place where it doesn’t snow- all I do is complain about it!:)
      Wine after a run=perfection.
And the gel nails get SO annoying when they start to peel! I make it about 10 days and then I can’t take it anymore! I am realizing I should probably stop paying so much for them because they don’t last as long as they should for me.

  8. Lily @ Lily Runs the World says

It’s really hot and humid here in Georgia, but I’m actually kind of enjoying it. We didn’t really get much summer weather in Europe, so the heat is a nice change. I also know that it’s temporary since we’re leaving this weekend, but I hear California is even hotter!

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:38 pm

That sounds like it worked out pretty well for you, to be able to have some warmer weather before winter comes!

  9. Nessa @ Ness Runs says

    September 18, 2014 at 3:10 pm

I agree! Wine is already pretty fantastic after a run but it’s even better after a race!
In terms of my favourite running weather it’s always the cooler the better! I can’t stand the sun when I’m running, I already get hot enough as it is.

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:39 pm

I find that my pace really suffers when its hot. I don’t like it too cold either because I find all the layers to be restricting. I think that chilly but not freezing is perfect running weather:)

  10. Leslie @ Life Begins at 30? says

Your nails look good! I always pick off my gel after 10-12 days. I’m so impatient!! Koonunga Hill is delicious!

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:40 pm

My gel manicures only last 10-12 days too! I don’t think its worth it for how much it costs to get them done. I hear they should last 2-3 weeks but that never happens for me!

  11. Chrissy @ Pink Polish and Running Shoes says

    September 18, 2014 at 4:20 pm

I’ve had great weather too. I’m hoping for a long fall before winter comes!

Yes, a long fall would be AMAZING!

  12. Kristina says

I put my hair into a pony tail and then roll it up into a bun to keep it from getting messy!

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:41 pm

For some reason my hair will not stay in any sort of bun while I am running. It’s fine for wearing it like that around during the day but I think all the bouncing when I’m running and my hair is kind of thin makes it impossible to keep up.

  13. Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says

    September 18, 2014 at 7:28 pm

I am so glad fall is here, definitely my favorite time of year to run. As for the hair, that’s why I chopped it off 🙂 And finally….there is NEVER a bad time to drink wine 😉

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:42 pm

I am always so tempted to chop my hair off! But now that I have made it through another summer I might as well wait until next year:)
You are absolutely right that there is never a bad time for wine!

Oof, I think I am about to go *into* fighting with my hair season. Humidity makes my hair a frizzy tangly mess and it’s about the be the “rainy” season here. I see a lot of top knots in my future.

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:43 pm

I think it is also the humidity for me that makes my hair get into a big knot! I hope you can figure out a way to keep it up and untangled:)

  15. Nicole@TheGirlWhoRanEverywhere says

    September 19, 2014 at 11:39 am

I am truly loving this awesome weather too!! I really truly am a summer girl, but even i will admit that i can fly through my runs more easily in the cooler temps!!!

I know what you are saying about the pure cadence 2’s…I stocked up on pureflows ( i don’t even want to tell you how many pairs i have ready to go) because i love them so much. I tried on the 3s but didn’t feel “the connection” like i did to the 2s!! 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      September 22, 2014 at 9:45 pm

I haven’t tried the Pureflow 3s yet because they still seem to be full price everywhere I looked. I am going to continue stocking up on the versions I like but after that I don’t know what I will do! I think that the 4s should be coming out at some point soon so maybe those will be better? (Fingers crossed!)

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
