Thursdays Really Are For Thinking Out Loud

Even though I write my Thursday posts on Wednesdays, by the time the middle of the week rolls around there’s really zero chance that I will write anything too meaningful. It’s the perfect day to just sit down and write whatever comes to mind. Also, it helps to look back at my iPhone pictures to see what the heck happened this week.

One thing I know for sure is that my allergies have come back with a vengeance over the past two weeks. CAN’T. STOP. SNEEZING. I haven’t dealt with them since last May- I remember they were awful when I was away in Florida for Memorial Day and I went running with tissues. I haven’t taken anything for them yet because 1) I don’t know where my allergy medicine would be and 2) I’m too cheap to buy more and 3) I honestly don’t know if it even really helps.

Regardless of all the pollen, I’ve still been running outside and loving it. But holy humidity! On Monday and Tuesday it wasn’t even that “hot” (like in the 60s) but you could definitely feel that the humidity was back. And I made the not-so-wise decision to run fast for the first time in like 6 months on Monday. As soon as I started the harder part of my run I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Good thing it was a fartlek run and I could do pretty much whatever I wanted.

This morning on my 5:15am drive to body pump I was thinking about how my car turns 15 this year. That’s almost as old as people are when they start driving! Weird to think about having something for that long. Maybe one day we will get a second car…maybe.

car miles

Going along with the one-car thing, I’ve been on the search for a gym in my new neighborhood. You know, because waking up at 4:30am to drive 25 minutes to the gym and then have to shower there (and leaving Rob to walk to the light rail to get to work) is not ideal.

I’m also on the lookout for a nearby nail salon that is reasonably priced. I got them done last Saturday (like May 2nd) and felt like the place I went to didnt’ do a great job. But then the regular manicure I got done there lasted 10 days (I got them done again today) and they didn’t look nearly as bad as they usually do after that long. They were still in decent shape after lots of cooking and cleaning over this past weekend. Sidenote: I really miss the price and convince of New York nail salons.

Are you guys impressed that I have managed to blog 5 days in a row again? Don’t get used to it, I have no idea how I managed it this week:) I’ll be away this weekend for my friend’s bachelorette-however, with 12+ hours on the train (between there and back) I may actually get a ton of blogging stuff done. Or I will just drink wine and sleep. We will see I guess!

Glad you’ve been blogging a lot again! No pressure of course, and feel free to sleep and drink wine this weekend on the train 🙂 I feel the same about my thurs and fri posts so tol and a recipe it has to be! Come to think of it Monday is the only day I can really write anything planned out. Have an awesome time this weekend!

I don’t know how I used to be so organized with my blogging! I had to be able to set aside several hours over the weekend and a good chunk of time each morning and evening. I just can’t do it that much anymore! Oh, and my train was cancelled so I didn’t get to go away

You know I hear you on the manicures Lol. I still can’t believe that the price here has remained so cheap! Can I just tell you that I suffered from May allergies since I am 12, so so badly — until I became a vegetarian? I feel NOTHING. I am on zero medication (gave up my zyrtec) and it’s soo weird and freeing to be outside, see the trees and pollen and feel NOTHING. Major life changer for me.

Thats so crazy! Maybe I should become a spring time vegetarian…not sure if I could do it though!

My allergies have been crazy too! I forgot tissues on my last run and ended up having to wipe my nose on my shirt…so gross!

You gotta do what you gotta do, right?:) But they are so annoying, and I hear they are way worse this year than others!

  4. Erin says

    May 14, 2015 at 6:12 am

I have always owned older cars. I actually don’t care (to some extent) what I drive as long as it’s safe and reliable and doesn’t require a payment. I can’t believe what people pay for cars — it’s cray as they are literally worth less and less each day. I bet I just made some friends there lol.

I am convinced that NOTHING helps my allergies. I’ve tried local honey, antihistamines, the works. It’s super frustrating. I don’t know if I will have allergies in Scotland but I’ve had a throat/sneezing thing going on for two weeks now that is weird lol.

I can also sympathize with the nails. When I lived in NYC it was like $15 to get an awesome gel manicure or solar nail fill and then I moved back to New Hampshire and it was like $40 for a fill and it took FOREVER and it was hard to make an appointment.

Congrats on blogging 5 days — I haven’t done that for a while, it’s quite an accomplishment!

    Have a great weekend, Lisa!

I just don’t see the point in getting a new car, since this one still works, although it would be nice to have a second car between the two of us!
I think a regular manicure when I lived on Long Island was $7…here in Maryland its at least $13. And gels are just too much- even though they last longer its definitely not something I can keep up with regularly!

  5. Cheryl says

    May 14, 2015 at 6:46 am

    I have never had a manicure…l think I am too cheap… 🙂
I had a car for 10 years, which isn’t really that long, but when you consider it was a hand me down from my parents that already had 120k miles on it when I got it…impressive. I still like that car. Towards the end I had to jump start it by pushing it or parking on a hill, pop the clutch–and we were off!
    Have fun this weekend!

It sounds like you definitely got a lot of use out of that car!

I am suffering from allergies right now too – majorly. My eyes are itchy and I’m prone to sneezing attacks all day long. Such a killer!

I do my own nails. I don’t have the patience to sit in the nail salon and go through the whole process. I like to paint my nails and move on to doing something else while they’re drying (even if that someone else is just blogging or reading blogs)!

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:04 pm

I feel like my nails never dry as well when I do them on my own, and I need to really take my time or they look really bad. Well they never come out as good as in a salon:) and I really like when they clean up my cuticles which are always a mess.

  7. Susie @ SuzLyfe says

    May 14, 2015 at 7:19 am

I”m too cheap for manicures, plus my nails aren’t looking to great right now… so yeah…
I’m not sneezing but I am blowing my nose like whoa. And you betcha that running outside is totally worth it!

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:06 pm

I go through phases with manicures but once I get them done i like to keep up with them for awhile..then I stop going and they end up looking terrible.
I finally took something for my allergies and I have cut back on the sneezing but everything it still itchy and Im sure my nose will start running soon.

  8. [email protected] says

    May 14, 2015 at 8:17 am

I don’t normally duffer from allergies, but lately I feel the same way. Carrying tissues w me everywhere. Isn’t the humidity better then the cold. Remember that brutal winter? I’d take this over that any day. I am actually gonna take body pump for the first time in ever. May get back to teaching it. So excited!

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:06 pm

Yep I would definitely take the warm weather over the cold any way! I remind myself of that all the time!

Yes, holy humidity this week! It’s been nuts. My hair just triples in size. Hope you find your allergy meds…the pollen has been absolutely ridiculous lately, too.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:07 pm

I have pretty much given up on blow-drying my hair lately – letting it air dry or putting it up is just a million times easier!

My Honda is nine years old and still running well. Spring allergies always get me, although they were the worst when I lived in Dayton, OH. Like, red eyes, headache, sneezing, sore throat awful. I do my own nails, so usually that lasts one week but at least I can easily touch up.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:07 pm

Mine is a Honda too! They last so long!

  11. Michelle says

    May 14, 2015 at 9:45 am

I keep my cars until they basically die. I’d say 7-8 years is probably the longest I’ve had one. I don’t get manicures because I’m #1 too cheap, and #2 they aren’t practical for me as I work in a hospital and am constantly washing my hands. I do suffer from seasonal allergies, but started taking Zyrtec again before bed, and it seems to be helping!

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:08 pm

I started taking Zyrtec yesterday and its helped a little but Im still sneezing more than usual. Hopefully I will see some more improvements after taking it for a few more days!

  12. Jamie says

    May 14, 2015 at 9:54 am

I am usually THRILLED if my manicure lasts 7 days. Usually by day 10 I have to take it completely off because it just looks so unkept. Luckily I do not have allergies, but even this spring I’ve had that tickle in my throat/itchy eyes thing going on after some afternoon runs.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:09 pm

Thats how I feel with manicures, but lately I have been doing much better with them! Like the one I got on Wednesday still hasn’t chipped yet!

  13. Sarah @pickyrunner says

    May 14, 2015 at 10:21 am

I need to find a new manicure place too because the place I’ve been going down here is REALLY expensive. The one I used to go to in Towson did a decent job and wasn’t very expensive, I just hate leaving the city during the week and my weekends are always too busy.

So happy you’re running consistently again!!

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:11 pm

Yea I would have never left the city during the week either! I feel like there is a range of prices and quality of nail salons in the area, and its all about figuring out a good balance of the two. My favorite one in Fed Hill didnt have parking so I either had to walk there (20 mins each way) if it was nice out or pay for a meter.

  14. Sara @ Lake Shore Runner says

    May 14, 2015 at 10:23 am

    15 years?! That is crazy….

A good manicure place is a must! I get a no chip because the normal ones do not last on me. I found a new place by my work that the no chip lasts 3 weeks – it is amazing!!

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:12 pm

Mine never last 3 weeks! I end up feeling like Im better off paying $13 of something that lasts 7 days and I can take off on my own that paying $25-30 for something that barely lasts 2 weeks and I either pick it off or have to go back.

My car has been paid off for several years so I plan on driving it until it dies! It is a 2008, so it’s only about half as old as your car. But it nearly has 100,000 miles on it! We only have one car too since Paul doesn’t drive. I guess that’s a good way to wrack up a lot of miles on the thing. But I love not having a car payment. And I’m not really “into” cars, so I’ll just run this one into the ground.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:14 pm

Im not “into” cars either- and when I was living a mile from work I was barely putting any miles on it for those years. But it also has a lot of years of road trips on it and now that Im back to a longer commute Im sure those miles will add up!

Allergies are no fun! I normally don’t have them but the past week or so I keep sneezing! I’m wondering if I’m dealing with them this year. Yuck! My manicures don’t usually last very long- I ALWAYS end up messing them up because I’m just too rough I guess.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:16 pm

I hope you aren’t dealing with allergies because they are so annoying! But it sounds like they are worse this year so maybe they have affected you more than they usually would.

  19. Lizzy says

    May 14, 2015 at 12:02 pm

I hope the allergy season isn’t too long for you this year. Allergies are the worst.

I’m impressed that your nails looked that good after 10 days. There was a period of time when I did my nails at home on the regular, but then life got busy and I couldn’t be bothered. I can’t keep them nice for more than a few days. I did the gel polish thing for a few months and really liked it, but didn’t like what they were doing to my budget. Manicures are a lot less expensive in LA though, so I might get back into it one of these days.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:17 pm

I did the gel for a while but I was only getting 2 weeks our of those for more than double the price of a regular. But if I have a special event and don’t want my nails to chip then I will go with the gel!

I have a horrible allergies! Ugh, I hate the feeling. Allergy meds do work for me, but I always stop taking them when I feel better (thinking that maybe they’ve passed) and then I start the whole cycle over again….slow learner I suppose 🙂 The longest I’ve had a car is probably the car I have now – it’s been about 5 years.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:22 pm

I used to take allergy meds year round but then I felt like I would get immune to them. So I will probably do Zyrtec for a few weeks and then either try to stop or switch to something else. Allergies are the worst!!

  25. Marcia says

Typically I don’t suffer from spring allergies but they are HORRENDOUS this year! How cool you’ve had your car that long. The Caveman’s Acura is about 8 now. He’s hanging on until Thing 1 starts driving then it’ll be hers.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:24 pm

It sounds like alot of people who don’t typically deal with allergies are feeling them this year. Thats a great (and generous plan) to pass along the Acura to your daughter!

  26. Emily says

    May 14, 2015 at 8:47 pm

For as long as I can remember we’ve always bought used cars and driven them… almost… literally into the ground. We usually tap the cars out at about 200-300,000 miles. 😀

I sometimes have what I think are allergies, but thankfully Colorado doesn’t have terrible problems with pollen, so in a lot of ways, we are blessed with that. I hope your allergies go away soon. 🙁

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:25 pm

I should probably move to Colorado so that I don’t need to deal with these allergies anymore! Used cars seem to do the job well enough, and its great that you have been able to get so many miles out of your cars!

  27. Meghan @ getoffyourbuttandrun says

    May 15, 2015 at 7:19 am

I’ve had my current car for 7 years now. It feels like forever. I usually don’t get my nails done in the salon unless it’s a no-chip. My nails get beat up easily and it’s not worth getting a regular manicure to last only a day.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:26 pm

Wow, your car is getting old!! My car is about 10 but I’ve only had it for 4 of those years…and it just hit 150,000 miles and is still going! I’ll probably have it till it starts needing a ton of work.
I don’t bother with my nails anymore because I can never maintain them for very long. Once they chip, I have to rub it all off.

    • [email protected] says

      May 16, 2015 at 3:27 pm

We also plan to hang onto this car for awhile but we should probably get a second car at some point soon, just in case:)

Love the manicure! I wish I could get them more often (read, more than once a year haha) but they just don’t last! My nails are weak sauce and I feel like I work with my hands way too much. Funny you should mention allergies and running because I’ve noticed my nose running a lot more than normal lately during my runs! Glad I’m not alone.

For pollen allergies, try and find some LOCAL honey. It is supposed to help the body build a resistance to it, but it has to be local honey from local bees. I hope this might work for you better than taking pills. 🙂

Ignorance is bliss, sometimes. (Until you’re dyi Ignorance is bliss, sometimes. (Until you’re dying 5 minutes into your run wondering when it will finally cool off again). But really, this time of year I feel like there’s no point in checking the weather. It’s either hot or really hot. #summerrunning
Another cloudy day at the beach. At least it isn’t raining and windy today. I felt the 95% humidity on this fartlek run (maybe last night’s wine and bad sleep too) so it was a tough one. But workouts are for building fitness, not proving fitness, right?! How do you move on past a hard workout?

#run #runner #runnersofinstagram #runchat #vacation
Just a few random thoughts (and videos) from Satur Just a few random thoughts (and videos) from Saturday’s race…even though this wasn’t a goal race there are always lessons learned!

First off, my daughter woke up around 1 am the night before the race. She almost always sleeps through the night now, but out of the 2 races I did this spring she woke up before both of them. It’s like she knows I am going to leave somehow. At least this time she went back to sleep pretty quickly and so did I!

Parking was easy, but it was a long walk to and from my car! (In past years I had parked closer but there was a ton of traffic coming and going)

The start line was so crowded that I couldn’t line up in the appropriate pace area. Many runners had the same challenge so the first few miles were chaotic with some people around me walking and others trying to run faster and weaving. I was just trying not to crash into anyone.

I didn’t bring my own water and wish I did! I needed it due to the weather and the water stops really slowed me down.

My watch never lined up with the mile markers. For some miles it was far ahead and others it was far behind. But overall my watch read 10.09 so it wasn’t too far off overall.

Hard iced tea is a nice post race option. They also had hard lemonade and Heineken. (A few sips was good enough for me though)

Spring races < Fall races!

What’s the best post run beverage you’ve gotten after a race?

I’ve had pretty bad luck with race day condition I’ve had pretty bad luck with race day conditions lately and this was no exception. Mid 70s, 92% humidity, wet roads but not enough rain to cool us off. Started pouring right when I finished. Just tried to run this for fun after a month of on and off sickness and not being prepared for those conditions. I forget how much Baltimore races really bring the positive energy (and the potholes!)
