I’m just popping in today to share my workouts from last week. It was a whirlwind of a week for some reason, and luckily I kept track of my workouts otherwise I wouldn’t have remembered what I did! We spent the weekend in Michigan so I didn’t have much time to put much additional thought into this post, so my apologies for that. Anyway, here is how the week looked.
Monday: 3.2 miles, Strides, Myrtl Routine
I finally started adding strides back in last week, although I forgot to include it in my recap. After my run I did the myrtl routine to strengthen and mobilize my hips.
Something weird happened a few hours after my run. My left upper back/shoulder area got super tight and bothered me all day. I have no idea why this happened! Was it from Sunday’s yoga? Did I sleep funny? I felt fine running so why did it come on in full force a little while later? Sometimes my right upper back will get tight but I always thought that was from using the computer/mouse alot. This was so random and annoying.
Tuesday: 45 minutes spinning
My back still felt tight but it didn’t bother me at all to be on the bike. I distracted myself by playing around on my iPad. I feel like when I do that I don’t necessarily get in as good of a workout, but at least the time goes by really fast!
Wednesday: 4 miles + stability work
My back felt better and I didn’t notice it at all during my run! (I was worried I would feel it when I swung my arms.) I also did my stability exercises. Then I spent 5+ hours in the car driving back and forth from the eastern shore for a 3 hour work meeting.
Thursday: Strength Training
I warmed up for a few minutes on the bike and then did a total body strength training workout. This is how it looked:
Friday: 30 minutes yoga
This was my active recovery day for the week so I took it easy. The yoga session was focused on core stability but also opened up the hips and back.
Saturday: 5 Miles, Core work, JasYoga Calf Reset
We had to leave for the airport around 8:30 to go to Michigan, so I decided to keep my run to 5 miles. (Rob was out the door at 4:45 to do 16, but I guess this is the perk of not being the one in marathon training mode.) I also didn’t know if I would be hitting the hotel gym on Sunday morning while everyone else was sleeping, so I didn’t worry about getting in too long of a workout. It was 54 degrees and felt amazing out during my run!
Sunday: Rest day
We ended up being up late on Saturday night celebrating Rob’s grandpa’s birthday. At 90 years old he is way more of a party animal than me, being able to stay up past 11pm. On Sunday morning I was exhausted but still woke up at 5. I drank coffee and blogged instead of working out.
WEEKLY SUMMARY
Running: 12.2
Yoga/Mobility: 1 longer yoga session, 1 5 min reset video, myrtl routine, some foam rolling
Strength Training: 1 total body workout, 2 core/stability workouts

How were your workouts last week?
Ever get random back pain that seems to come out of nowhere?
If you stay up late do you work out the next day?
Suzy says
Oh shoot! I hope your back is okay! Back pain is the worst. Sometimes I get it from sleeping funny, but other times it happens and I have no idea what caused it. I can’t believe you spent 5-plus hours in the car and in a 3 hour meeting! HOLY CRAP! How did THAT feel on your poor back?! 🙁
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
The drive actually wasn’t bad, luckily my back felt better by then! It’s so weird how quickly and randomly that kind of pain can come on.
meredith (The Cookie ChRUNicles) says
last week I had upper back/neck pain for a few days and didn’t know where it came from either! I actually pinned it down to straps on a bra that I don’t normally wear I think! they have elastic to them and I swear it created pressure in my neck area. I don’t know for sure but it’s really possible. I haven’t worn it since and it went away!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thats so weird, but definitely possible! I still havent figure out what caused my back pain but Im just glad its gone!
Kristina Running says
Happy bday to Rob’s grandpa! I’m glad you had a good time in Michigan. That weather sounds really nice! It’s been getting progressively warmer here. This weekend was in the lower to mid 80s most of the day and later this week we’ll be up to 88 degrees again! :/ I’m not totally loving the warmer weather but I think it makes my calves happier so I guess I can deal with it :). Have a great Monday!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thats good that at least the warmer weather makes your calves feel better! I wouldn’t mind some warmer weather around here.
angela @ happy fit mama says
94 and partying late? Maybe that’s the secret to old age? I hope your back feels better. Mine was all knotted up last week. So much so that my pelvis was twisted. Fun. Have a great day!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Backs can cause so many problems! I hope you are feeling better.
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I did absolutely nothing last week after the marathon since I ended up getting sick. I did have to teach class every day, so I guess I did do something, but I meant running related. I like your total body workout. How long did it take you to complete? Also what are scorpions?
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
The scorpions are when you are in a push up position with your feet on a raised bench, and lift one leg, pull it in towards your opposite shoulder then raise it back up. You may want to google it because I probably didnt explain it well:) The workout took about 50 minutes.
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
Hoping that you just slept on it weird or sat weird or something and your back gets its act together! I don’t want to hear otherwise!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It’s felt 100% since Wednesday! It was definitely just a weird random thing.
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
The random achiness is odd I usually chock it up to sleeping weirdly or lifting something around the house. Looks like you had a pretty great week
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Yea Im thinking I probably just did something weird on Sunday, maybe yoga since I havent done that in awhile.
Marcia says
When back pain comes on like that I suspect either a muscle spasm or pinched nerve. I swear backs are so fickle. Hope yours resolves itself asap. Great workout week. You are so diligent!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Hm thats good to know. I’m thinking it was more likely a muscle spasm since it went away so quickly, but who knows!
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
I hope your back feels better! I take rest days if I am up late, because I am incapable of sleeping in and am always exhausted the next day. Sounds like a fun celebration!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
That was exactly my problem! I just didnt have the energy to work out after only 5 hours of sleep.
Sarah @ Bucket List Tummy says
It always makes me laugh when the older folks can out pace me at bedtime. Props to Rob – starting at 4:45 is dedication! Hope you had a good trip.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Rob’s whole family stays up so late- the little kids and the only adults! We are the ones ready for bed early.
Kimberly G says
I’m glad that your back is feeling better. Great hob on getting in those workouts this week even though you weren’t feeling 100%
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks!
Lesley says
I notice I get muscle pain that I didn’t use to. Is this part of getting older? I know it’s got to be part of sitting more, and I need to get up and move around. My low back is usually the culprit, and I don’t think I do anything specific to make it twinge.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I bet that it is part of getting older, unfortunately. I never used to have these issues a few years ago!
Elle says
I can barely stay up past 11 ! Sounds like quite a guy!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Me neither! I am always so impressed with how late he can stay up!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Glad your back started to feel better. Hopefully it continues to settle down.
That’s a great total body workout – thanks for sharing!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks!
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
I”m having some pretty significant back pain since yesterday. If it isn’t one thing, it’s another…
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Ugh! You are right about that!
Kimberly Hatting says
I’m kind of a night owl AND an early bird…so (for now) I’m able to stay up late and still rise and shine the next morning. I fear that’s gonna change some day….
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thats so impressive! I just cant stay up late these days. And when I do, Im all thrown off the next day.
Rachel says
I get a strange tightness in my shoulder blade sometimes. It’s so aggravating and I have no idea what causes it!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thats what happens on my right side! I always blame the computer because thats the hand I use the mouse with at work.
Coco says
LOL on being out-partied by a 90-year old. I’d be the same way for sure.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Haha yea, I dont know if he is just really impressive or Im just really lame…
Anna @ Pipers Run says
Back pain is no joke. Just dealing with whiplash at the moment and hoping it’s not too long to get better. With little kids I feel like I am used to working out when I’m tired the next day.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I really hope your back feels better quickly!
Gina says
Your last run was 50 degrees? Oh that sounds heavenly! Good job getting the workouts in even amongst the craziness!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! The 50 degree run was great- hopefully that weather will stick around!
Jenn says
Ugh. I carry a lot of my stress in my shoulders and neck so I will usually be sore up there after a long run (when I get tired I just clench up). I know that about myself so it’s not really random. I hope you get to the bottom of it.
It was a decent training week. I can’t be too disappointed in the work I put in.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks. I think I also hold stress in my shoulders so it could definitely be related to that!
HoHo Runs says
I get neck pains from sleeping “wrong” a lot. You know, those where you can’t turn your head? It’s so annoying. I distract myself with handheld technology on bike trainer rides too. I’ve got to have something to do and the TV is above my head so I’d get one of those neck pains if I tried to watch it. LOL. Good job this week with your variety of workouts, as usual. Thanks for linking, Lisa!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
The neck pain from sleeping weird is the worst! That happens to me a few times a year. I have a TV in the basement but its not connected to cable or anything else, so I would just watch DVDs. Ill have to consider that if I start doing longer rides.
Smitha @ The Faux Runner says
I’m right now struggling with a super tight neck crink 🙁
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Ugh I hope it feels better!
Angela @marathonsandmotivation.com says
I hope your back is better! Back pain really is the worst!! I love your total body workout, I pinned it to try!!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! I hope you like the workout if you give it a try!
Angel says
Hi Lisa, Your weekly workout is amazing. It definitely inspires me to workout more. I only do yoga for now. And maybe if your back pain comes back again I recommend you do to a little bit more of yoga and more streching. It helps me with my chronic back pain. Angel
Mary Beth Jackson says
Hope the back is feeling better! I love that grandpa was the night owl- party on! I am usually the first one ready for bed too- can’t help myself maybe we are storing it up for our 90’s!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Haha yes let’s hope so!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Hope your back is starting to feel better! Getting random pain is always so frustrating. Hopefully it is that you slept or moved funny, and just need a couple of days to have the twinge work itself out.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Luckily its felt better this week!
Agness of Fit Travelling says
Great recap, Lisa! Hope your back gets well soon! 😉
