This week wasn’t much different from most others, even though I spent the end of the week in Charleston, South Carolina. It was a great trip and I’m planning to post a recap tomorrow! For today, I wanted to document my workouts. I’m still not running but hoping to start back up (without the orthotics) really soon. I think it will be helpful to see where I am now and document my progress.
Monday
I started out the week at the gym with 45 minutes on the elliptical. I’ve been giving myself about 15 minutes after my elliptical workouts to do some stability and mobility stuff (planks, side planks, bridges, dead bugs, hip mobility, and ankle mobility).
Tuesday
I completed my first strength workout of the week. Later that day, I had the opportunity to FaceTime with Drew about my process with phase 2. He gave me some helpful tips about some of the exercises, tips on ankle mobility, and also encouraged me to increase my weights on some of the exercises.
Wednesday
50 minutes on the spin bike. I followed a workout on YouTube and worked up a good sweat. This was the first time I’ve pushed myself on the bike in quite some time! I also went for a 20 minute walk later that morning, and we flew to Charleston in the afternoon.
Thursday
I found the hotel gym, and luckily it was empty so I did my second strength workout of the week. Working out in the gym meant I had access to heavier weights, which I took advantage of.
Friday
We wanted to try a breakfast place that was about 2.5 miles from the hotel, so we went there first thing in the morning. After eating way too much, we walked home. It was a nice way to get in exercise while seeing a new place and not being stuck in a gym. However, I felt like I wanted a little more of a workout so I went to the gym when we got back and just did 20 minutes on the elliptical, follow by some stretching.
Saturday
It was tough to get myself to the gym, as I was finally starting to relax and get in vacation mode! I knew I would feel better after a workout, so I spent 40 minutes on the elliptical and did a little core work and stretching. As expected, I felt better and was ready to enjoy the day.
Sunday
We left for the airport around 6:45am so I decided to make this a rest day. Besides, I was tired from a later than normal night and a little too much wine!
I know I am probably jinxing myself by saying this, but my ankle and foot have felt good and I am optimistic about slowly getting back to running. It was hard to not run while on vacation, but it was so hot that I guess I didn’t miss it too much!
Do you go to the gym on vacation?
Ever decide to walk home from a restaurant after eating too much?

im so glad you had a great vacation and are staring to feel better! I hope you can get back to running soon. as far as vacation workouts, some trips I definitely make it to the gym and some I choose to use as my rest days. it all depends I guess!

There were a few days when we went to Hawaii that became complete rest days- sometimes its really nice to just do nothing while on vacation!
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
yay for a great and restorative vacation! We often walk home after dinner–usually because we have eaten too much!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It definitely feels good to walk after enjoying a big meal!
Sarah @ Bucket List Tummy says
Maybe all the extra cross training and rest will make your foot stronger!? Glad you had a great vk – I love Charleston.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I really hope so!

I love that you found a variety of ways to be active while on vacation. The hotel gym looked really nice as well!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It was a really nice gym, and it was always empty which was even better!

Glad you had a great vacation! I like taking walks after dinners out, especially when travelling. It feels good to get that extra movement in, especially on vacation. It sounds like the strength training program has worked out really well for you!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Walking feels so good after a big meal. And yes, Im really enjoying the strength training!
Marcia says
You did a great job of staying active while on vacay! I may workout MORE while away than I do at home. Crazy about those orthotics. Geez!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I usually run more on vacation because I have more time! But there is only some much of the gym that I can handle.

Oh good–I’m glad you guys had a good time! Way to get into the gym too–that’s impressive. I feel lost without running so I keep up with my runs (albeit minimally compared to normal) while I’m away, or I’ll time it so that I do a 20-miler the day before we leave or something so that I can use the down time to recover. Good news about your feet. I won’t jinx it by talking about it too much though… la la la la la.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I usually do the same thing as you with workouts. I like getting in a long run before leaving so I can take it easier while Im away but I usually still do something just about every day.

That hotel gym looks really nice. It sounds like you did a lot, and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your foot. My ankle was a little tender this weekend, but I don’t think it was from running. At least it didn’t hurt when I was running, so I don’t know why it was tender. It feels better today.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Glad your ankle seems to feel ok! The gym at the hotel was really nice, and luckily it was always pretty empty!
Laura says
That’s so nice you had access to a gym on vacation! I usually find myself doing mostly running/walking and a few at home strength sessions on vacation. You kept yourself really active!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I really like having access to a hotel gym while Im away. Especially this time around since I wasn’t running!
Marina @ Happy Healing says
So inspiring – looks like you had a great week of workouts. And I’m glad your ankle/foot have been feeling better 🙂 .
I always workout on vacations. I love to explore different gyms/classes and it keeps me feeling good!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! And I definitely agree- I always feel better when I work out while Im away plus its fun to see new places!
Jessie @ The Acquired Sass says
I will go to the gym if I travel for work, but usually not on vacation. BUT, I’m never worried about it because our vacations are always planned to be active. LOTS of walking, hiking, exploring, etc. So I am by no means sitting around sipping margaritas poolside.
But I admire your dedication. I feel like I would miss out on MUCH needed sleep if I tried to squeeze in gym time.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I think I need the workout time while Im away because my trips are the opposite of yours- pretty much all just lounging by the pool:) And Im naturally an early riser so I always feel like I have plenty of time to get in a workout in the morning and still enjoy the day.
HoHo Runs says
I hope you had a nice, relaxing vacation! I have used the hotel gym for access to a treadmill a few times. That’s great news about your ankle and foot. I’ve got my fingers crossed that you can get back to running!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thank you! Im nervous that it will start hurting again but hoping for the best!
Susan says
Can’t wait to read your full trip recap1 Sometimes I work out on vacation and sometimes I don’t. It really just depends. I think a walk home after a nice meal like that is a perfect idea!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It felt good to move after a big meal! Sometimes its nice to find other ways to exercise while away other than going to the gym.
San says
What a great week and you made it to the gym so often… I have recently started to work out/run on trips and I enjoy it. It gives you the opportunity to explore new running path and also keep up the routine!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Exactly! Working out while traveling is a great way to see a new place.
