Weekly Recap: Feeling Grateful

I don’t know about everywhere else, but over the past few days we have had some amazing running weather in Baltimore. I have felt really good on almost all of my runs over the past week. I think its due to a combination of properly recovering from the marathon, getting ART treatment for my leg that was bothering me, and perfect running weather. This week I ran just under 40 miles which I think for me is my sweet spot of weekly mileage. I have started adding some workouts back in and they have felt great! (In a hurt-so-good sort of way.) It’s not often that I experience so many perfect runs. I don’t expect them to be perfect, but when it does happen I try to feel grateful.

Week of 5/25-5/31:

Sunday: 6.13 miles (in Florida) (9:49 pace)

Monday:Rest (travel back from Florida)

Tuesday: 5.17 miles (8:46 pace), PM: 60 mins hot yoga

Wednesday: 3.16 miles (9:19 pace), body pump, cx worksIMG_2631

Thursday: 6.06 miles – Hills (8:56 pace), PM: 75 mins hot yoga

Friday: 12 miles: 2 mi warm up, 3 x 2 miles @ HMP (~8:10) with 1 mi recovery intervals, 2 mi cool down (8:52 pace overall)

Saturday: 7ish miles with no garmin

Total: 39.52 miles

 harbor

Since I have been feeling good, I decided to sign up for a race this coming Sunday. Its a 6k around the Riverside/Harbor area of Baltimore called 6 Dot Dash. I’ve only run one 6k before and it was 5 years ago, so hopefully I can beat my time!

I also signed up for a 5k on the Sunday of the 4th of July weekend. We are having some family visit and they were interested in doing a race. My sister’s coworker helped to organize this 5k called The Molly Murphy Memorial 5K to raise awareness for anxiety and depression in young adults.

I’m really excited to do some smaller/fun races and see where my speed is! Crossing my fingers running continues to go as well as it has been!

How were your workouts last week?

Anyone else have shorter races coming up?

What are you feeling grateful for lately?

That is a solid week, for sure. I wish all races could be signed up for the week of. I mean, really. That way there would be no pressure if you did get hurt or whatever. I know that it would be a logistical nightmare for the race coordinators, but it’s all about us, isn’t it?
My workouts last week were pretty solid, save for one when I was clearly just going through the motions. I’m feeling grateful for this past week that I got to spend with Alex, and the chance to travel and go to the beach for a few days. I’m REALLY grateful I didn’t get sick, like the majority of the people attending the wedding. I’m also very very grateful for another week of injury free running. I will take every run that I can get that continues that trend!

I agree about the last minute race thing! Lately I have been refusing to sign up for anything until I was sure I would run, so as long as it doesn’t sell out I just sign up at the last minute.
It sounds like you have a lot to be grateful for, that’s awesome!

Great job on your workouts this week! I love body pump class. I used to be an instructor for that and RPM. I have never took a CX Works class. I am sure that is a great core workout!

Thanks! I love body pump and cx works. I don’t know if I would ever get such good strength and core workouts if i didn’t have them at my gym!

I just signed up for a summer 5k 🙂 It’s actually my first 5k too (what kind of genius skips straight to marathons? I should go back in time and slap myself) so it’ll be an automatic PR. Running around the harbor sounds really fun and pretty, looking forward to your recap!

Starting with a marathon? That’s intense! My first race was a half marathon, and it took a few years before I tried a 5k. Automatic PRs are great!

I have a 10k next weekend but nothing else yet for summer…hoping to put something on the calendar though. I am grateful for running injury free in great weather! Although the weather won’t last I’m feeling really positive about my running goals based on how things are going.

I know, I want to just hold on to this weather! I’m always grateful when I am running injury free:) Can’t wait to hear about your 10k!

I had a race Sunday! so my weekend was a lot of nervous chit chat and recovering with food haha. I’m very impressed, after I go to hot yoga, I can’t move for the rest of the day and day after! 😉

Hot yoga can definitely be intense, but I usually feel pretty good the next day! I try to focus on stretching in the class. Maybe I’m not working hard enough:)

Sounds like a great week! Have you ever run through the Druid Hill Park area? I work at the MD Zoo (located in the park) and it’s an awesome area for exercise. Keep it up!

I’ve never gone there to run on my own but I know we ran through that in the Baltimore marathon! That would probably be a great place to get some hills in! My husband wants to run the Dreaded Druid Hills at the end of the month but I will be out of town. I’ve heard that race is sooo hard!

That looks like a pretty awesome week to me, girl! I’m still not doing any real running workouts, so you’re way ahead of me :). Keep it up!!

Thanks! I tend to get bored just running easy every day, so I’ve liked mixing it up a bit!

I’ve heard of 6 Dot Dash! I bet that’s going to be a great race. I love any chance I get to run around the harbor. 🙂 I have a couple 5K’s coming up (one on the 15th…it’s a BRRC club 5K for their GPS series and then my runcation in VA). Are you going to do Chuck 12 this year??

I am planning to! I’ve heard it was a lot of fun last year! Hopefully we can finally meet!

Super solid week! This week has been easy for me. I’m running a half-marathon on Sunday, so resting up. But I raced a 5K obstacle run last week. I LOVE shorter races! Every time I run one it reminds me that I want to do more of them.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
