in Nutrition, What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW) &middot March 4, 2015

What I Ate Monday (It Wasn’t All That Pretty)

You know you’ve been blogging for awhile when you sit down to eat dinner and your husband says “what, you’re not gonna take a picture first?” I started to explain my logic behind which meals I take pictures of but it really wasn’t even worth getting into. I think about 95% of the pictures I take on my phone never get posted anywhere, and the other 5% aren’t all that impressive but seem instagram or blog-worthy for some reason or another.

So to be honest, I’m sharing my meals from Monday for this week’s “WIAW” because 1) I took pictures of my food that day and 2) I don’t have anything else to post about today. As Michele mentioned yesterday, food posts are a nice break from thinking! And for some reason we all get curious about what other people eat. Good thing Jenn decided to continue with the link-up! (Thanks!)

a smoothie, egg frittata, paleo muffin, fruit and coffee

I woke up on Monday morning to lingering ice from the storm the day before. I found out schools were closed so took my time in the morning (my office hours are a little more flexible). I drank  smoothie while reading some blogs. It had lots greens but because I put berries in there it always turns this ugly brown color.  A little later I had breakfast- an egg frittata with a paleo muffin and raspberries. With coffee of course.

paleo chili with sweet potatoes

I ended up being pretty busy at work and didn’t need a morning snack like I usually do, probably because of a bigger breakfast. Also, I think my appetite is finally realizing that I am no longer running 40 miles a week. I brought leftover paleo chili to work which was nice and filling. Not the prettiest meal, but delicious!

blueberry lara bar

I ended up making a last minute PT appointment and needed a snack, so grabbed a Larabar as I was getting ready.

homemade pizza with chicken and broccoli

I was already hungry when I got home and knew dinner wouldn’t be for awhile, so grabbed a cold slice of leftover pizza. I didn’t want this to go to waste anyway!

paleo stuffed peppers

Dinner was a paleo version of stuffed peppers. It had ground beef, carrots, spinach, mushrooms, and marinara sauce. Another meal that isn’t very pretty but still good!

dessert of wine and chocolate

After dinner I had some wine and dark chocolate, obviously. Kind of standard these days!

Do you like eating leftover pizza cold or do you heat it up?
What are some meals you like that don’t look very glamorous but are delicious anyway?

Ugh, I totally know what you mean about the brown green smoothie colour! It’s like, come on already! I love it when it turns out that vibrant, pretty green shade. Sigh… That chocolate looks yummo. I’m more of a red wine person, but I actually drank white zinfandel tonight, which is rare but a nice change from time to time.

I am usually all about the red wine too. To be honest we were just starting to run low on red so I decided I would go with some white:) It is nice to change it up once in a while!

Pretty food is nice, but sometimes ugly gets it done, too! My smoothies almost always have an ugly hue to them, I think, but I love them anyhow. And pizza is good cold or hot, leftover or fresh!

Yup, I have realized lately that so of my favorite things to eat don’t look very nice! As long as they taste good, that’s all that matters:)

My food always looks horrible photographed! I’m either too hungry to care what it looks like in the picture or 10 seconds away from one of the kids screaming so I need to shove it down!

      March 4, 2015 at 8:37 am

I just don’t have the patience to deal with making food look nice just for a picture! I’m no food photographer and I don’t pretend to be:) And like you said, who wants to waste time trying to take a good picture when you are starving?!

90% of the time the food I photograph looks unappetizing! It’s a huge plus when the look decent. I looove heating up cold pizza. I sometimes even prefer it to hot hot pizza! My favourite is the wine and dark chocolate, yum yum!!

Whenever I actually make a meal that looks good I jump on the opportunity to take a picture of it! And there is just something about leftover pizza…

One of my mom’s favorite things in the world is cold leftover pizza. I like mine heated in the toaster oven, but lets be real, there is a slim chance that it makes it to my fridge!

Usually when we make homemade pizza there are no leftovers, but we used a different crust this time that was much more filling! If I’m eating leftover pizza as a meal I might take the time to heat it, otherwise if its for a snack I just eat it cold.

It depends on my mood if I eat pizza cold or heated up. Normally I heat it up but if I’m lazy, I won’t.

    • [email protected] says

      March 4, 2015 at 8:41 am

It kind of depends on my mood too- if I’m having it for a meal I might be more likely to put in the effort and heat it up!

    The perfect dessert!

I’m always on the fence about cold leftover pizza. I’ve definitely be known to eat a slice of it, but the toppings always taste really flavorless to me when they’re cold! Do you notice that too, or is that just me?

    • [email protected] says

      March 4, 2015 at 8:43 am

I do kind of notice that but I feel like in general leftover pizza has a different appeal than fresh…not that it is necessarily better or worse, just different if that makes sense?

My smoothies are never a pretty sight, but usually the best tasting thing I eat! My students think they are totally gross and can’t fathom drinking something looking like that…they’ll learn! 😉

I make a vegetarian, noodle-less lasagna every week with eggplant, zucchini, and other vegetables. It looks like mush but is one of my favorite things to eat!
Come to think of it, most of the dishes I make aren’t too pretty…I wish I could be like most of these food bloggers with these beautiful food pictures, but I don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon!

Pizza is warmed up…ALWAYS–I like the cheese to be melty!

When I started making smoothies they used to come out a pretty pink color! Then I started experimenting with weird ingredients and now they never look nice. But still taste good and have lots of nutrients so that’s what counts right?

You and I have the same thinking! My problem is it always seems to be the same day of food, it used to be Monday and now it’s Sunday. I’ve been thinking about stuffed peppers lately but I’m a little nervous to try them, plus it would just be for me since I know my kids would not be interested. Yours actually look so good and I think I’ll finally try them.

      March 4, 2015 at 8:46 am

I used to eat a version of stuffed peppers that my mom introduced me to with brown rice. I still like those, but I think these have more flavor plus a whole bunch of extra veggies which is an added bonus!
The problem with always documenting the same days meals is that feel like I end up sharing the exact same foods since I’m a creature of habit. At least this week was a little different than usual.

I don’t like cold pizza but I love pizza leftovers! My husband asks the same thing when I’m not taking a picture. It’s actually really sweet because he will wait to start cutting into something until he makes sure I have a picture of it 😉

      March 4, 2015 at 8:47 am

I used to always heat up my leftover pizza but I guess at some point I got lazy! That’s nice that your husband helps you out with taking pictures. I could see how it could annoy some significant others as they are anxious to dig into their meals:)

You should post the recipe for the stuffed pepper! I don’t know many paleo recipes so am always intrigued to find ones that make for a quick week-night dinner.

Most of what I eat is not photogenic, especially if I made it lol. I like cold Chinese food and if it’s a grandma slice of leftover pizza, I will eat it cold but usually prefer pizza hot.

    • [email protected] says

      March 4, 2015 at 8:50 am

I think I started being ok eating cold leftovers in college when I would wake up hungover and grab the first thing I could find in the fridge…pizza and Chinese food were usually my only options:)

Agreed! I’m over being concerned with how it looks as long as it tastes good:)

It’s so true that some of the tastiest foods aren’t the prettiest! Whenever I photograph food for the blog I am just like, I am so NOT a food stylist. But what matters is taste and nutrition – aesthetics alone won’t keep our bodies strong and healthy! (Says me, the girl whose phone is full of less than appealing photos of really delicious food.)
I prefer leftover pizza heated up. I always gravitate towards warm meals – I find them more satisfying than cold!

    • [email protected] says

      March 4, 2015 at 3:12 pm

I used to be that way about warm food, but I have adjusted because I really don’t like using the microwave at work. So if I bring leftovers I usually eat them cold.

  16. [email protected] says

    March 4, 2015 at 11:29 am

Some of the best meals do not look good. Its all about taste anyways. Pizza for me definitely has to be hot. I like the cheese to be all melty and gooey.

      March 4, 2015 at 3:12 pm

That’s a good point- I do like to have the cheese melted!
