Well, we made it to March! I am planning to do a February recap/check-in post tomorrow, but for today I’m just gonna talk about what’s been happening lately and share last week’s workouts.
My ClassPass Trial Expired on Wednesday, so I did my best to get in a few more classes earlier this week.
Sunday: Rest, PT exercises
Monday: AM: 45 minute spin class at Rev Cycle PM: Physical therapy and ran 4 miles on Alter-G
Tuesday: Rest, PT Exercises
Wednesday: PureBrarre class, PT exercises
Thursday: Physical therapy and ran 4 miles on Alter-G
Friday: Rest, PT exercises
Saturday: PT exercises, ran 6 miles
Total: 14 miles
This mileage is really low for me, but between the weather and not feeling 100% it just makes sense for now. Lately I have been feeling more frustrated about my “injury” because 1) I can’t seem to figure out any pattern of what makes things better or worse 2) Each week I run less and some days I feel worse than weeks where I am running alot 3) There is no consistency to where I feel aches/pains/tightness. I swear it moves between 3-4 different places every few days.
But anyway, all that is a post for another day…what I do know is that when things feel “off” its not as comfortable to run….so while I don’t necessarily think running is causing pain I do think that it can be a ripple effect when things are already hurting, if that makes sense.
Do you see how frozen over the harbor is from the picture from Saturday’s run? It was pretty weird to look out where there is usually water and just see a sheet of ice covered in snow.
Speaking of which, it’s snowing again as I am writing this on Sunday.
Thanks for nothing, March.
On a happier note, I need to give a few shout-outs today. This first goes to the amazing Suz who BQ’d this weekend at the Phoenix marathon!
Also, I am coaching Alexis who is training for the Providence Cox Marathon on May 3rd and lives in Boston…so you know how tough it has been to train there this winter. But she managed to get her 15 miler done at an awesome pace despite negative temperatures, ice, a frozen water bottle, and having to finish up her run on the treadmill!
So even though I’m not training or even running much, I like to live vicariously through these other runners who are doing amazing things!
As for the weekend, there’s not much to report. We got to go back to the house on Saturday, and it’s almost complete! My parents met us near the house and we grabbed lunch and Starbucks and they got to see the house for the first time since it looked like this:
We took some measurements and met a neighbor who recently moved in across the street. I spent the rest of the afternoon getting some food prep done and made chili in the crock pot to eat for dinner after we got home from church. The rest of the evening consisted of a few of my favorite things: pajamas, wine, and chocolate.
So far Sunday has been spent drinking coffee, making pancakes, and doing blog stuff. I’m also hoping to do some cleaning/packing later today. We have been picking random areas of our apartment and tossing out a ton of stuff that we don’t plan to move. Before Rob and I moved in together 5 years ago I was moving every 1-2 years so I was always cleaning things out as I was moving. Now we have lived here for 5 years and gathered tons of crap that together we will need to decide what is worth keeping/tossing. It will be alot of work which is why I am glad we are getting started early! Each time I do a small section I end up with 1-2 huge garbage bags of stuff that we are getting rid of.
I’m linking up with Tara for the Weekend Update!
How was your weekend? Anyone else have a shout-out worthy race or run?!
When was the last time that you moved?
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles says
I can’t with the weather anymore. School is delayed again! I haven’t moved now in 5 years which is feeling long for me after buying and selling and buying and then selling houses before this one lol. I still look around to keep the clutter away just in case I decide to move and need to pack again!
[email protected] says
I was so excited for March but its like a slap in the face to have an ice storm in March 1st! It’s definitely best to get rid of the clutter regularly. We were just never good at that. Part of the problem is we have to walk our trash to the dumpster that’s down the block…but now its even worse because we have to make tons of trips there!
Chrissy @Pink Polish and Running Shoes says
It’s crazy how much stuff you accumulate over time when you stay in one place. I’ve been in my condo for almost 4 years and I need to do a serious spring cleaning/throw all the crap out soon hahaha.
Also, major props to Alexis. I live in the Boston area and this weekend was nasty in terms of weather. Absolutely freezing. Double high-five for getting that run in!
[email protected] says
As much as I complain about Baltimore weather I just know that Boston is a million times worse!!
It’s always good to do a de-cluttering regularly- I wish we had done that a few times while we were living here!
Tina Muir says
It is gonna pay off big time for you that you are being so smart, not trying to force miles when the conditions are dangerous. It is so good you are focusing on your PT exercises, it will pay off in the long run! Your sunday sounds pretty good to me! i LOVE pancakes!
[email protected] says
Exactly, and it makes it a little easier to back off the mileage when the weather has been so bad!
Sue @ This Mama Runs for Cupcakes says
Seriously, can’t handle the weather. We have another “ice” day today with no school for the boys. And you are being so smart in being conservative with the running. You want to be able to run for a lifetime, not just right now. All of your strength training and PT will pay off, it just takes patience. Something a lot of us don’t have…I know I don’t! But sounds like you are handling it well!
[email protected] says
No school today here either! I think just about every district is closed.
I am trying to stay positive and be patient but its definitely frustrating, and some days I handle it better than others. I know I am being smart, but I can’t get but get feelings of hopelessness from time to time.
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
You’re being so smart about running and recovery! To look on the bright side, at least you can’t run much during a cold and nasty winter than during a nicer season!
My husband and I are moving soon also and doing the exact same thing of purging our stuff. It feels so good to slowly clean up the apartment!
[email protected] says
That’s what I keep telling myself about running less during the winter! I keep thinking about how I want to be back to running regularly once spring is here!
The clean-out feels really good! It’s a lot of work but definitely a good feeling:)
Sam @ The Running Graduate says
I really hope your body starts cooperating for you soon! I can only imagine how frustrated you must be but you’re awesome for taking it easy and doing what’s needed to get better!
I can’t even imagine having to move after five years since I’ve moved every two years lately. It will feel good to move into your house fresh without extra stuff though!
[email protected] says
Thanks! It is really frustrating and some days I feel like I am going to lose it!
Moving after 5 years is rough, but I’m glad that we only have a small apartment! A few years ago my parents moved to a new house after living in their home for 20 years-now THAT is alot of work!!
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
I am sorry you are struggling to find rhyme or reason for your pains. I have days like that too. Slowly trying to figure it out… Ran 10 on Sat and it felt GREAT during and after. Got on the spin bike for 40 min Sunday and it PULSATED later that night. WTF!? lol.
[email protected] says
So glad you can relate, although I wish you couldn’t. I feel like I am going crazy and I think my PT probably thinks I am making up these complaints or something. I have started writing down how I feel and what I do each day to try to figure out a pattern.
Kristina says
Packing up to move is one of my least favorite things! I did find that it was helpful this time that we got to do it over the course of a couple of months. I think you’ll really like that part too. It’s much less stressful than having to box and unbox everything you own over the a short period of time.
I was surprised at how many things I ended up throwing or donating too. I decided if I had not used it in over three years (how long we lived at our old place), I would get rid of it. That was really satisfying!
[email protected] says
Moving is SO much work, but definitely a perfect opportunity to clean things out! I am finding stuff that I had no idea we even still owned!
Taca @ A Side Of Dessert says
Good for you for starting early and reorganizing things for moving! What an exciting time moving into a brand new house! I hope you share photos with us when you’re fully settled in. Have a fabulous week!
[email protected] says
Yes I will definitely share some photos once we move in! It’s alot of work but it also gives me something to do while I am counting down the days until we move…
Michele @ paleorunningmomma says
I totally get what you’re saying about not being inclined to run when it’s just not all that pleasant, even if the pain isn’t running related. You’re doing all you can though to figure it out. I haven’t moved for over 5 years and can’t even imagine now that we’re quite settled in all our clutter 🙂 Exciting time for you!
[email protected] says
I keep telling myself how much harder it would be to move if we were already living in a house! Luckily we don’t have a ton of space in our apartment so that means a little less junk:)
Mary Beth Jackson says
I love wine, chocolate and my pj’s! We had a great time at our 5K this weekend and it felt so good to be back at it! Good luck with all the packing and cleaning, purging is good for the soul! Have a great week!
[email protected] says
Glad you had fun at your 5k! I agree that there is something nice about cleaning and purging:)
Lesley says
I move every 1-2 years too so I try not to collect a lot of stuff. I just moved in January and when I do move, I start packing early so I can see what I need and don’t need anymore.
[email protected] says
That’s a good plan, and I definitely think its easier when you move regularly!
Salt says
Your Sunday sounds like mine. We hid inside pretty much all day yesterday. No fun with a stir crazy toddler!
In the back of my mind I was holding out some shred of hope that March would hit and it would be 50 degrees (like it’s SUPPOSED TO BE this time of year). This is just unreal. I’ve never seen the harbor frozen over like that before. I don’t blame you for putting in less miles. It’s all I can do to drag my butt onto a treadmill right now. If I didn’t have to be running them I don’t think I would be.
My ClassPass expired too, but I just signed on for another month! Of course my barre class this morning was canceled due to the stupid ice we just got.
But…HOORAY FOR THE HOUSE! That’s such an awesome thing to look forward to!!
[email protected] says
I still get emails from alot of the studios where I took classes last month and I am constantly seeing delayed openings! I am really starting to get stir crazy with spending so much time indoors and barely exercising at all. Spring has to be right around the corner!!
Susie @ SuzLyfe says
Thank you for the shout out! I am glad that you are being smart–resting, focusing on PT, and avoiding the weather. If nothing else–it is paying off because you are avoiding getting hurt!
[email protected] says
That’s what I am trying to remember! I think its frustrating that I don’t really know if what I am doing is helping or what makes it worse.
So so proud of you!!:)
Lizzy says
Maybe I’m weird, but I kind of love packing and moving because you have a chance to sort through all your things and to declutter. I just moved in July and if I’m totally honest, we haven’t finished unpacking everything yet. I’m almost to the point where I want to just get rid of those boxes because clearly they don’t contain anything too important!
Your injury sounds incredibly frustrating. I hope that you are able to make some more sense of it soon so that you can make some progress towards recovery.
[email protected] says
I know what you mean about moving…however, I did enjoy not having to deal with it for a few years:)
Suzy says
YEAH SUZ! Atta girl. And we moved a year ago and yes, we still have stuff that we need to organize. I like moving because it forces us to get rid of stuff that we don’t use all the time. It’s just the organizing bit that kills me. I can’t believe you guys are still having snow! I feel so frustrated for you!!!
[email protected] says
I am trying to plan ahead so that when I unpack in the new place I can have an organized plan in mind- but I doubt that will happen!
Yea, enough of this snow!!
Hayley@healthyregardshayley says
Since graduating college I have moved every <6 months! It is a pain in the butt, luckily not a houseful of stuff though usually just my own, room stuff and kitchen stuff but still… I need to make up my mind on where I want to be, lol!
[email protected] says
That sounds exhausting! But like you said, at least you don’t have a ton of stuff:)
Tricia Vaughn says
I’ve read a lot about ClassPass. I wish I lived in a bigger city I think this would be great to take different classes in different places. I’ve lived in my house for 19 years, I can’t even imagine what all I need to throw away. 🙂
[email protected] says
It was alot of fun to try ClassPass! However, I like having a gym with cardio equipment, so it would be hard for me to JUST have classpass, but couldn’t afford to do both that and a gym membership.
I’m sure you gathered alot of stuff over 19 years!
[email protected] says
I can see how frustrated it can be when you cannot pinpoint what’s causing your injury. I am so thankful that I have been feeling pretty god lately. I am even thinking about signing up for a spring race. I live near a lake and that too froze over so much that people were playing ice hockey on it. Your house is really coming along. I bet you two are getting excited!
[email protected] says
Glad to hear you are feeling better!
Not sure that anyone would want to skate on the harbor but I wonder if its possible?:)
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch says
I’m sure it’s so frustrating to have all that pain but I have to say I really admire you for sticking to your PT! I’m going to need it to get warm as well haha it’s killing my running vibe!!
[email protected] says
Thanks…its pretty annoying but I am trying to stay positive and just do what my PT says. It looks like next week might be warmer- I am keeping my fingers crossed!
M @readeatwriterun says
We last moved in 2010. We almost needed to move a couple of years ago and wen through a big purge – but we need to do it again! I like when it’s done (love having less clutter) but really don’t enjoy the doing of it….
[email protected] says
I definitely agree! It feels good to know you got rid of all the stuff you don’t need but its never fun while you’re doing it:)
Tara @ Running 'N' Reading says
Lisa, I kind of enjoy doing that whole “clean out” thing; I’m thinking I need to do some of that around our apartment pretty soon. I’m so glad your folks were able to check out the house and that it’s getting so close – GAH! That’s super exciting for you! Thanks so much for linking up with the blog this week; hope yours is off to a great start!
[email protected] says
Its always a good feeling to get rid of stuff you don’t need! Not sure if I would say I “enjoy” it but I like the feeling of knowing its done:)
Thanks for hosting!
Hilary says
That’s so unfair that you guys got a storm on March 1! I’m sorry. It was raining in SoCal but that made for one of the best runs in months for me. I moved in with the boyfriend last summer and I’m appalled at how much stuff I’ve accumulated since… Here’s hoping we stay put for a while!
[email protected] says
This whole week looks pretty bad for us as far as snow and ice goes! But next week looks warmer, so Im keeping my fingers crossed.
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
Hi Lisa! Oh my, injuries can be so very annoying and frustrating. It’s good to listen to your body and pull back when you need to, and nice job keeping up with PT. At least you can find comfort in PJs and wine, right? Good set of workouts! Happy Monday! 🙂
[email protected] says
Thanks Ashley! Yes, PJs and wine definitely help to deal with injuries:)
Hailey says
Your “injury” sounds really frustrating, I’m sorry your having to deal with it being so inconsistent/unpredictable like that. Hopefully physical therapy can eventually help work the kinks out a little bit along with the trial and error you’re doing of rest days vs. running. I know that can be a tricky thing sometimes! You are doing great at keeping up with your PT exercises though, so you’re making progress towards getting better even if you’re not able to run a ton of miles. I’m sure you’ll be happy down the road when you’re running pain-free that you stuck with it and took it easy when need be :).
[email protected] says
Thanks Hailey! It’s definitely a frustrating one…I just hope that what I am doing is actually helping! Just gotta stay positive I guess:)
Natalie says
I will feel so nice to move into your new home without stuff you don’t need!
We go through a clean out every 6-8 months or so and it always feel great! 🙂
You are being so smart about your injury!! I hope your injury heals soon.
We haven’t moved in 9 years!! Time flies!
[email protected] says
Exactly, there’s no reason to bring stuff you no longer need to a new home!
MaryBeth at The Thrive Blog says
I think a lot of runners at this point in the Winter (no matter where you live) and getting exhausted of the whole scene.
I am so looking forward to Spring. My running soul needs some major thawing right about now.
MB
[email protected] says
Agreed! Enough of the snow, ice, and cold!
Lauren says
Ugh I want to downsize the amount of stuff I have but it’s hard. You accumulate SO MUCH CRAP. I’ve been in my place 3 years and we don’t have a garage or storage or anything so it’s just sitting in corners. Spring cleaning time for real.
[email protected] says
Part of me is glad that we don’t have a ton of space to store stuff, but I still question how we accumulated so much junk in our small apartment (and makes me worried for what will happen after a few years of living in a house!)
Charissa says
Good luck preparing everything for your move! That’s so exciting! I moved in with my boyfriend and his brother two years ago and brought essential stuff with me, but since I knew it wasn’t going to be permanent, I left a lot of stuff at my parents’ house. We’re hoping to buy a new house later this year or next year though (of course, we keep pushing this back more and more because life happens *sigh*) and when that happens, I’ll go through ALL of my stuff and throw away the things I no longer need.
[email protected] says
We still actually have a bunch of things stored in my parents’ basement from our wedding 2 years ago because we just didnt have room for it all! And of course we thought we would be moving into a right away but it takes longer than you would expect!
Alexis Teevens says
Fell behind on blog reading this week, so I’m just seeing this now, but thanks for the shout out 🙂 I’ve loved working with you so far!! Can’t wait for my 16 miler tomorrow…temps supposed to be in the 20s. Hooray!
