5 Friday Things

It’s hard to believe it’s Friday already, but I guess that’s what happens when you have Tuesday off from work! Although the busyness of the rest of the week certainly made up for that. By the end of the day Wednesday my day off was a long, distant, memory! Overall it’s been a pretty good week around here, so I thought I would share some of the good things that have happened lately.

Its been a pretty good week around here, so I thought I would share some of the things going on! Click post to read about mostly running related updates of the week.

5 Friday Things to Share

Vitamix Blender

I finally got my blender back after sending it in for repairs! The turnaround was really quick. They didn’t even tell me what was wrong with it, but sent back the same base and a new canister. It’s working great and I am so happy to be making smoothies again!

Garmin

Another item I had to mail in recently for repairs was my Garmin. I just got this one last Christmas and there was a tiny crack in the screen and part of the band broke.  While it was being repaired I was using my old Garmin for running, so that worked out. I had been wearing the new Garmin all the time (because it tracks steps, heart rate, etc). It was quite an adjustment to go without anything on my wrist for a couple weeks!

Coffee on my Deck

I am obsessed with going out on the deck to drink coffee in the mornings. There isn’t really enough time to do this during the week (it would be impossible to get myself to come back inside and go to work). Weekend mornings have been spent out there and it’s so nice. Last year at this time we were still having our deck built and didn’t get to enjoy it for most of the summer. We are getting so much use out of if this year!

Honey Stinger Waffles

How lucky (weird?) is this. When I opened a Honey Stinger before my run the other day there were 2 waffles in there! I’ve never had that happen before. I only wanted one so it was kind of annoying to pull it out because they were kind of stuck together. I think it would have been great to eat a double Honey Stinger Waffle if I needed more fuel before a longer run!

Running Update

Since my last running update, things have improved! I have been able to run in the orthotics again as long as I bandage up my heel and I also put these patches on my shoes. I still may experiment with other shoes but for now this seems to be working.

altras

On Wednesday I tried running in the Launch + orthotics, and the same old familiar ankle tightens came back a few hours after my run. I really don’t think my feet like a high heel to toe drop. (Even though the Launch have a drop of 10mm, that is pretty high for what I have been wearing for years, plus the orthotics add more height). I have a few days off from running and I’ll see what happens if I can stick to the Altras and other low drop shoes for now. At least the blister seems to be under control!

Whooo so glad to hear that you’ve figured out the blister situation!

Sitting out on the deck sipping coffee sounds like the perfect way to start the day. I miss sitting out on our patio and can’t wait until winter to be able to do it again. During summer, especially this summer due to all the rain, there are too many mosquitos to comfortably sit outside. We’ve tried so many mosquito repelling products but none of them really stand up to the sheer volume of mosquitos out there. Plus even at midnight it’s still feels like 95 degrees out! C’mon winter, I miss you! haha

Im so glad we decided to get part of our deck screened in! We use it so much more than we would otherwise.

the summer is the best for being outside for the simple things like drinking our coffee. I love dining outside this time of year whenever I can. this week feels so weird! it was definitely a short one, yet I’m glad it’s Friday. I don’t like a low heel – one time my saucony shoes changed their drop and I didn’t know and after. few weeks, I had pain in both heels so I brought the shoes back. that’s when I learned I can’t run with a low heel drop.

I wish I could just know for sure which shoes do or don’t work for me! It would make this whole process a little easier.

I’m glad that you’ve had some great things happen recently! LOL about the two honey stinger waffles. It’s always nice when you get an extra unexpected treat!

We have been ordering them for years and this is the first time Ive ever had two in a pack!

I always have my coffee on my couch in my spot. Always. But in Mexico,my favorite place to do everything is on the balcony. Just perfection!

Wow, you are the repair queen! So, is Garmin pretty understanding about repairs? I have that watch, and hope I won’t need them but you never know. Your back porch is beautiful – I’d be out there all the time too!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 7, 2017 at 6:07 pm

They told me that they don’t typically make physical repairs under warranty but they would do it. So its always worth asking if something happens! Its such an expensive watch so I was a little annoyed that I had issues so soon.

I am so happy your blister is feeling better! And sounds like you are putting some pieces of the puzzle in place with shoes and your injury! I am figuring out the shoe thing, too. I tried out Saucony Ride yesterday and they felt good. I am going to may rotate them with the Launch to see if I can feel if one is better than the other!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 7, 2017 at 6:08 pm

I tried the Ride a few months ago and they started to give me a blister! Ha- maybe my feet are just blister prone!?

Great news about your feet. That’s awesome. I really want a Vitamix! Maybe one day. And damn that deck looks gorgeous! I’d LOVE a place to sit and have coffee like that!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 7, 2017 at 6:09 pm

I registered for the Vitamix before my wedding and my parents got it for me because they knew I really wanted it! Its lasted almost 5 years with no issues until now and I use it all the time.

Bummer the Launch 4 did not work out for you. I love those shoes.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 7, 2017 at 6:11 pm

Ive been sort of wearing them for a year and I don’t hate them, but they’re not my favorite. And I don’t think they will work with the orthotics.

  14. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says

    July 7, 2017 at 11:33 am

Unfortunately minus the holiday I didn’t have a short week and it has been busy each day I’ve been in the office!

I’m glad to hear that you’ve found a better combination of shoes/orthotics and that your blister woes are at bay!

I’ve only had the Honey Stinger Waffles a couple of times but I love them! I’d just eat them as a regular snack any time lol

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 7, 2017 at 6:11 pm

Rob packs a honey stinger as a snack for work almost every day!

  15. Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says

    July 7, 2017 at 2:31 pm

2 waffles! I can see how that actually could be annoying if you don’t want to eat 2. I guess I’d have to give one away (I actually gave one away to a homeless person in NOLA because I knew I wasn’t going to need it before the race).

I like to drink my tea (and eat my breakfast & lunch) sitting on our couch which has a large bay window opposite it. Our deck has a tendency to attract wasps. 🙁

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 7, 2017 at 6:15 pm

It was slightly annoying to get 2 waffles because now the second one is still sitting in my pantry! Hopefully its not stale when I go to eat it tomorrow.
Boo to the wasps!! Part of our deck is screened in so most of the bugs are kept out.

  16. Teresa says

    July 7, 2017 at 7:06 pm

Ahhhh, your deck looks like a perfectly peaceful place to have coffee! I’m glad you are finding a way to make the orthotics work ….that’s a huge step forward! 🙂

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 8, 2017 at 6:04 am

Well, at least the blister is under control (for now). Next I need to see if they will actually help with my foot/ankle pain!

  17. Kimberly Hatting says

    July 8, 2017 at 7:02 am

Honestly, I ‘m not sure of my toe-to-heel drop…..but I do know I need crazy support/stability with my shoes due to my goofy high arches and awkward over-pronating feet LOL I have not used Honey Stinger waffles many times, but I could swear there were always two waffles in the packages (?)…did I Just get lucky?

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 8, 2017 at 2:31 pm

Haha maybe you did just get lucky with the waffles because we get them all the time and there is only 1 in there! Unless there are different options and maybe some come in packs of 2?

  18. Laura says

    July 8, 2017 at 9:14 pm

It’s so frustrating to have to do the trial and error to figure out what the cause of the original injury was! I’m at that place too… glad you feel like you’re making progress!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 9, 2017 at 6:25 am

Thanks! I’m not sure I will ever figure it out but at this point I just need to figure out what will work moving forward!

  19. San says

    July 10, 2017 at 6:53 pm

I’ve only had my Garmin Forerunner 235 for less than a year, but I feel like I can never live without it again… glad you got yours fixed! 😉

Your deck situation looks gorgeous! I’d love to have coffee there.

I have yet to try the HoneyStinger waffles… are they tasty?

I hope you get your shoe situation figured out… it’s hard if you can’t quite pinpoint the problem.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      July 10, 2017 at 7:19 pm

The honey stingers are so good! They are my favorite pre-run snack.

Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!

Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by back to back kid activities, so there was no time to post about it. (I ate breakfast in the car and lunch at soccer practice- it was that kind of a day.) I was kind of nervous going in to this run, especially now that I’m getting down to last few key long runs. I had 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles on the plan, which sounded manageable but also challenging. The weather was perfect and I hit all my paces. At the end I got a little confused- thinking I was at 15 miles but I was actually at 14 🙃 Got home and realized I chafed really bad. Another long run down, and another week closer to race day.

Do you ever psych yourself out before long runs?
