Back Into the Swing of Things

I can’t believe it’s time for another recap again! This week flew by with just getting back from Missouri on Sunday and getting back into the swing of things. Luckily I did keep track of my workouts this week, because everything is a blur right now!

Weekly Wrap: Back Into the Swing of Things

Monday: 45 minutes spinning and core/glute work

I was off from work and ended up watching part of the Boston Marathon on my iPad during the bike ride! It definitely helped to pass the time.

boston marathon

Tuesday: 1 hour total body workout

I used the TRX for alot of the exercises. It’s always a good way to change things ups!

strength training

Wednesday: AM: 20 minute walk and core work PM: 1 hour Yoga

I was slow getting ready for my workout in the morning, and it was colder outside than I expected! You also don’t warm up as quickly when you’re walking vs running. After work I went to yoga. It was a good class but I got home after 7 which feels so late to me (I go to bed at like 8:30).

Thursday: 30 minutes spinning and mobility work

I had ordered the Runner’s World “Run and 10” DVD and it came on Wednesday. So on Thursday morning I tried my first 10 minute workout focused on mobility. I liked it, but it’s a little odd (or maybe the guy leading the workout is a little odd). I don’t really know how to explain it. I’ll share more as I do more of the workouts.

Run and 10 DVD

Friday: 15 minutes spinning, 10 minutes core, 10 minutes hips

I tried two more of the 10 minute workouts: core and hips. I was planning to walk, but when I got outside it was  pouring rain, so I hopped on the bike instead.

Saturday: Bike and Strength Intervals

It was another rainy morning so I stayed indoors. I did a variation of my Cardio and Strength Interval Workout which is always fun. I used the stability ball at the end. You know those exercises where you lay on the floor and pass the ball from your feet to your hands? I have no idea what it’s really called, but I definitely felt it!

bosu balance

Sunday: 20 minutes stability work and mobility

I did the 10 minute stability workout on the Run and 10 DVD and then a few of my own mobility exercises just to get in some movement. We had to make a quick trip out of town for a night and left Sunday morning and are coming back tonight (Monday).

Well, I still don’t have my orthotics so I didn’t run at all this week. It’s easier to deal with when the weather is rainy. Besides, it was a crazy busy week and I had plenty of other workouts to keep me busy. I just keep telling myself I want to focus on getting healthy and strong now so I can start adjusting to the orthotics and then make a successful return to running. I don’t think a little running here or there will hurt the situation, but I figure less is better at this point.

Thanks for following along as I try to get back into the swing of things!

Do you find it easier to take time off running if you are busy (with life and other workouts)?

It’s definitely not easy for me to adjust after being away! I was really glad to come home from the cruise on Saturday morning so I still had the full weekend ahead. There have been times that we’ve walked off a cruise ship and had to go straight to work an hour later and that’s the worst! I don’t think I’ll ever do that again… those days will remain in my 20s haha.

When will your orthotics get in? I bet you are itching to try them out and see how it goes!

I really hope the orthotics come in this week. I thought they said 2 weeks which would have been last Friday.
I bet its really hard coming back from an amazing cruise vacation! At least you had the weekend to recover.

Curious about more of your thoughts regarding the run + 10 thing. It seems like something I would like to incorporate, but if homie is weird… ;D

I think at first I was really just surprised at the way he talked and directed the exercises. I don’t think it interferes with the quality of the workouts, and because they are only 10 minutes you’re not listening to him for too long! I just wonder if it will get annoying listening to him over and over.

You do such a great job getting in all the mobility work! And a great variety of workouts, too. Hope you get the orthotics this week!

      Thanks- I hope so too!

It takes me a day or two to get back into the swing of things usually. And yes, when I’m really busy, it’s easier for me to justify not running, I’m not thinking about it as much!

The not thinking about it is key! When I am in my normal routine I feel like its more noticeable that Im not running.

I have a really hard time adjusting back after a trip, especially if it’s a great vacation! Chicago through me off in a major way last month because I had such a good time in a short time period. It all went too fast and then I was home and like, now what? lol it takes time for me to get back into routine after things like that.

      April 25, 2017 at 5:24 am

Yea, the quick trips are tough but the long ones are hard too! I like my routine and getting back from being away definitely throws me off for awhile.

You are so consistent at strength training and mobility work! I usually don’t have a hard time transitioning back from a trip, unless the time zone was drastically different. I hope you get your orthotics this week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 25, 2017 at 5:25 am

The time zone changes are so hard! Last weekend it was just an hour difference but I still felt it.

Okay, so I have to tell you about the Run & 10 DVD! I go for ART every other week and my doctor and I were talking about this DVD and he and I said the same thing – the guy leading the workouts is a little weird, but the workouts are great!

      April 25, 2017 at 5:26 am

Haha Im glad Im not the only one who feels that way! The first time I heard him talking and saying some of the stuff he said I was like “really”? And the salutations at the end are a little weird. Its not like we’re doing yoga!

I have to laugh because I would totally be distracted by the weird instructor on the DVD. Last year, when I was doing all the riding on the trainer, I watched some YouTube cycling class videos and there was one instructor that was so strange. He had his jersey unzipped down to his navel and if I wasn’t watching, his instructions could have been completely misconstrued… “that’s right, right there..” “umhum, you got it” “come on, push it, push it!”….

    You catch my drift…

This is the first time ever in all my 40 years of life where I am truly interested and seriously considering riding along to some YouTube cycling class videos…

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 25, 2017 at 5:27 am

Haha stuff like that can be so distracting during a workout! I have seen some strange instructors in YouTube videos as well.

Great workouts! Awesome job. I have been doing like 2 5K walks per week just to keep my feet on pavement but I sure miss running. Like you, I am glad to have other things to do. I actually swam 2 days in a row last week which I hardly do (I like to do something different every day and keep a few days between my swims). P.S. I go to bed super early too! By 7 PM I am in bed reading!

Nice job getting in the pool! I don’t have access to one but I think it would be a great way to stay in shape without any impact.
Glad Im not the only one with a very early bed time!

I actually welcome the return to my routine after being away. You had a great week. Always making the most of it, that is priceless. I’ve not heard about that DVD. If the guy’s odd though, that would be weird.

My first couple of workouts back after some time away are a little bit of a struggle. I know not to push my miles because I need to get the rust off.

Great effort! Unfortunately I was under the weather last week and was bed bound for two days. I’m slowly coming out the other end so today was very much me getting back into the swings of things. I hope I have a better week! Rich

I have never heard f the run and 10 dvd. Please do share when you continue to do the rest of the exercises. So are there a bunch of workouts just ten minutes each?

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 25, 2017 at 5:30 am

Yes, so there are 5 workouts that focus on mobility, core, hips, arms, and stability. Each are 10 minutes. I havent done the arms one yet but the rest are pretty good!

Great variety of workouts this week, as always. I think you are smart to just wait on those orthotics and start back on the right foot (pun intended). How much longer do you think it will take? I have trouble just transitioning from the weekend back to the workweek! Traveling just compounds it. Yes, staying busy definitely helps when you aren’t running! Thanks for linking, Lisa!

Every day I keep thinking that this will be the day they will call and tell me they are ready! I thought it would be 2 weeks, and right now its been 2 and a half.

Despite not running you keep a serious week of workouts. Love it! I use you a reference when I’m not running, like now. I watched the show “my diet is better than your diet” and Jay (the guy from your DVD) was on it. I can’t remember what I thought was odd about him, but as soon as I saw him I recognized him! It was a very interesting show btw. Hope they do it again. Some of the weight loss plans are so odd!!

Oh that is so interesting, I have never heard of that show! I will need to look out for it and see what he is like in a different setting!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
