Happy Marathon Monday! I’m excited to be off from work today so I can watch the race. Good luck to everyone running!
This week included almost no running but still plenty of workouts. When you can’t run, walk- so that’s what I did. Even though I “can” run I figure while I am waiting for my orthotics I might as well cut back a whole lot, With the nicer weather this week and some traveling I still wanted to make sure to get outside!
I keep track of my workouts in my training journal, but I am writing this post from Missouri and don’t have it with me. So let’s see if I can remember what I did!
Monday: AM: 30 minutes on the spin bike PM: 1 hour yoga
I finally made it to a yoga studio! There is one close to work and I was able to do a new membership deal where I can pay $25 and go as much as I want over 2 weeks. This probably wasn’t the smartest move as I realized I would be pretty busy the rest of the week and then out of town for a few days. Hopefully next week I can make it there a few more times.
Tuesday: 40 minute walk
It was nice out and felt good to get outside! I felt really tired after coming in from my walk, and I am wondering if it has to do with allergies (I’ve been sneezing a lot this week too.) Usually I feel energized when I come in after a run, so I didn’t like feeling tired after a walk!
Wednesday: 1 hour total body strength training
My foot was feeling stiff when I woke up, so I did mostly upper body work. However, once I started moving it loosened up quite a bit. I did do some glute and hamstring exercises with the stability ball.
Thursday: 30 minutes on the spin bike and 45 minutes yoga (at home)
Even though I took off from work I had a non-stop day and didn’t have time to make it to the yoga studio. I had to be packed and ready to leave for Kansas City in the afternoon, along with a bunch of other errands.
Friday: 3 mile walk
We were in Kansas City, MO for our nieces 2nd birthday. (They used to live in Arkansas but moved last fall, so this was our first time visiting.) Rob had a long run of 18 miles on the plan for Saturday, so we went exploring to see where he could run. It sure is a hilly area!
In the afternoon we went to Boulevard Brewery for a beer tasting.
Saturday: 4 mile run/walk
I headed outside to enjoy the nice weather and just did some easy run/walk intervals. I stayed in the development and there is a little trail that goes around it (but it’s only about 2 miles or so). It was a little windy but a nice day.
Then we spent the afternoon celebrating Finley’s birthday!
Sunday: Rest
We went to church and brunch for Easter, and then headed back to Baltimore in the afternoon.
Of course I did my PTT exercises and stretching daily as well.
While spring weather really makes me want to run more, I’m happy to just be spending more time outside. I’m hoping to get my orthotics soon so I can start walking and running in those. I’ve heard it can take some time to adjust so I’m ready to get the process started!

Do you like to take walks?
Has the weather felt like spring where you live?
If you have orthotics, how long did it take you to adjust to wearing them?
Are you watching the Boston Marathon today?
meredith (The Cookie ChRUNicles) says
so I went for a long walk yesterday and I swear it’s more tiring for me than running the same distance lol. but I do like a nice walk! happy birthday to your niece, so cute.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Why is walking so tiring? And its tough to feel like Im moving SO slow and barely cover any distance.
Susie @ Suzlyfe says
Girl, you know I walk when I can’t run! I put on a podcast and off I go!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I love listening to podcasts while I walk! Definitely helps to pass the time.
Coco says
Yes, you got in lots of workouts this week! You are smart to be cautious.
What a cutie pie!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! It always feels good to stay active even when Im not running much.
Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says
The run/walk intervals are the thing for me right now. I always say that there’s no shame in walking–time for me to take my own advice!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I say the same thing but its hard to slow down and walk! Its not the same as running, but I have found the more I do it I am getting more and more used to it.
Kimberly Hatting says
Orthotics kind of scare me….I’ve heard some really good stories, and some nightmares. I hope they work for you! I try to be active no matter my state of “injury.” 😉
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
They make me nervous too! Thats why I will definitely be easing into them.
Sarah @ BucketListTummy says
I think my allergies have gotten a little worse lately too – sometimes walks can wear me out, too! lol I can’t explain it.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It’s so strange how tiring a walk can be!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
When I had the bad PF and I could not run or walk, I did lots of cycling too. It really helped keep my cardio up. Hope those orthotics come in for you soon. Have a great week
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I hope to get them soon- hopefully by the end of the week. Im grateful to have a bike so I can get in workouts without tiring my feet.
Laura @ This Runner's Recipes says
I really enjoy walks! The dogs need walks but it just feels good to get out and get a some light exercise and fresh air.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I bet having a dog is a good way to ensure you get out for fresh air! I see some of my neighbors out there walking their dogs every morning.
Kimberly G says
I should have taken the day off work today! I’ll have to try to watcht he live feed on my computer in-between meetings – sigh!
You did a great job of getting in a ton of workouts last week! Love the variety of cross training, strength training and running/walking!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I hope you were able to watch some of the race from work! I usually completely miss it when Im working.
Jennifer says
Wish I was off today 🙂 But I’m tracking the runners online. I also enjoy walking, this weekend was perfect.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
This is such great weather for being outside!
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I am glad I have off today too to watch the Boston Marathon. Finley is adorable! I like paying for a pass to studio classes so I am not locked into a contract. As long as I am there to get my use out of the classes during that time period.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I don’t like contracts either, especially if Im not sure if I will go enough. My last yoga studio let you buy packs of classes that you could use whenever, and that worked well for me.
Katie Shepherd says
Walking is great! I like to walk and talk with a friend. I haven’t been able to meet my walking buddy in a couple weeks since her kids have been sick. Great job on your walks and cross training! Happy Birthday Finley!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! Walking is such a a great way to spend time outside. I really need to get in the habit of doing it more.
Marcia says
I’m glued to the marathon! So nice to see the course again from a different perspective. I love walks when the weather is nice, and it has been gorgeous lately, thankfully. The lines on your down dog are beautiful!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! I feel like Ive made some progress with the yoga over the past few weeks. Everything was so tight and the poses felt awkward when I got back into it at first.
Suzy says
I get so tired from walking for some reason! It’s why I hate shopping, or going to amusement parks. I’d way rather run, but then I’d look really weird running around the mall. I’m looking forward to you getting your orthotics! I bet they’ll help so much. That photo of you and Rob is so cute.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! I also hope that the orthotics will help. And I really don’t understand why walking is so tiring, but it is!
Elle says
Watching Boston right now. I love to walk. Did a 3 hour walk yesterday and my legs were quite tired after. Will be a short run later this morning.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Wow, 3 hours is impressive! Good for you!!
Anna @ Piper's Run says
Way to get in all those workouts! I’ve been sidelined so much over the last year that walking is just a must-do for me as well!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
I feel like walking is a great alternative so you can still be outside even without running.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Smart decision to take it easy while you’re waiting for the results and to receive your orthotics. Hopefully they come sooner than later!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Me too- thanks!!
Susan says
I do love walking and normally always take my dog for a cool down walk after my run. Since I am in a brace right now, I am just doing the walking part 🙂 I am thankful for cycling, swimming, yoga and weights, too! I hope you like the new orthotics.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
It sounds like you have been able to stay pretty active, so that is great! Although I know its not at all the same as running :/
Diana @ Live Lean Eat Green says
Love your attitude…when you can’t there’s still so many other activities to do 🙂
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Its nice to still stay active even when Im not running!
Mary Beth Jackson says
No shame in that game! I love walking! As long as you keep moving it will be ok! I hope you are enjoying your day off!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! It always feels good to get outside and keep up with workouts!
Rachel says
Sounds like you’re doing a great job at keeping up your fitness while you wait… patiently, I’m sure. 😉 You’re doing a great job!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Thanks! It sure does feel like this is taking forever.
Jenn says
I am glad you are able to get outside some more.
I do like walks, but I have awful seasonal allergies so I try not to spend too much time on them. Running is about all I can take. Plus, it’s so hot here all the time, they are sometimes hard to enjoy.
I was able to listen to Boston on internet radio while I was at work. It wasn’t quite the same as watching it, but you do what you can.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
The allergies are rough! I think they are starting to affect me too. And Im sure once it gets hot here I will be less inclined to walk.
angela @ happy fit mama says
I wish I could go for long walks right now. But I’m restricted on that too. But I’ll be out there soon enough. I can’t remember the exact timeline but I think I had to wear my orthotics during non running times for x amount of hours before I ran in them. Then it was a gradual increase on time while running. I’m sure it’s different for every type.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
The gradual increase for wearing orthotics makes sense now that you say that. I hope its not too long before I can start wearing them for running!
Shathiso says
Before I thought I could run, I used to walk all the time as my way of working out. Now that I have started running, I find walking too slow. But I think I am going to schedule them in, because I remember how much I used to love taking walks. Happy Birthday to your lovely niece! My daughter’s birthday was also last week.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Its strange to go back to walking once you get used to running! Happy birthday to your daughter!
Paul says
Hi Lisa, this is a great post! My Wife and I love to walk the dog. We do actually run with him too but before running, we walked first. It’s felt like summer here in the UK today, bring on more hot weather and the BBQ’s, haha! Great blog by the way.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Walking is great, especially before you start running!
Ilka says
I totally agree Lisa. If you can’t run then at least walk. It still beats sitting down any day of the week and it keeps your joints from getting stiff. I have been walking quite a bit on days when my foot is in pain. I had a blog post about it a few weeks ago. I hope you’re back at running sometime very soon!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Its definitely better to keep moving in whatever way to you can!
Lesley says
It is definitely feeling like spring, and I’ve had to adjust my speed to accommodate the heat. This weekend was gorgeous and I did my 4 miles outside. I was a little chilly at the beginning with the wind, but I warmed up nicely.
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Its nice that the weather finally feels like spring! Im sure before we know it we will be complaining about the heat.
Jennifer @ Dashing in Style says
Nice! When do you get your orthotics? Before I started running I walked for exercise. But now walking is just part of my day since I walk my dog for all his potty breaks. I like that if all else fails I’ll still get at least an hour of walking in a day with the dog walks!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Im not sure when my orthotics will come in, I’m hoping within the next week. Im sure people who have dogs get in a lot of walking!
HoHo Runs says
I once walked my dogs every evening in warm weather but have gotten out of the habit. I just can’t seem to find that time any longer. I haven’t yet gone with orthotics although they’ve been suggested. I’ll be very interested to follow and see how they help you! It sounds like you had a lovely Easter with family and celebrating a birthday. Thanks for linking, Lisa!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Im a little hesitant about the orthotics but I am hopeful they will help!
Tricia@MissSippipiddlin says
I just love the name Finley and she is precious! I worked Monday and tried to get the marathon to pull up but I just couldn’t do it. Worked out because I couldn’t have watched anyway with as busy as we were!
I do enjoy my non-running days in the mornings because I walk!
Lisa @ Mile By Mile says
Isn’t it a sweet name? Thats frustrating that you couldn’t watch the marathon!
