Month in Review: July 2018

I finally feel like I can be completely honest in these month in review posts! Since April, I’ve been leaving out a huge part of my life which obviously has impacted my goals and workouts. Now that I’ve finally shared that I’m pregnant I will say that most of my goals for 2018 have gone out of the window. I still want to stay focused on certain things but I’m also allowing myself to just go with the flow, or at least try to.

Now that July is over, it's time to look back on the month. I've adjusted my goals for this year, but still hoping to stay on track with my workouts while pregnant! #fitness #goals

Here are my other monthly check-ins from this year:
January 2018
February 2018
March 2018
April 2018
May 2018
June 2018

These are the goals I set in January for this year:

It's that time of year to start planing ahead for 2018. I have set some goals for the year, as well as some "dream goals". Click post to read more.

My “dream goals” are still in place…for one day. As for the other goals, I’ll still be tracking shoe mileage, saving money, reading books, ands trying to avoid any injuries.

This month was a pretty good one. I had started to feel like myself again around mid-June, which was also around the time the weather warmed up. I felt good during all of July but I was also pretty busy with work and traveling. So once again, this month flew by!

monday run

I’m happy to say I’ve been sticking with my strength training which I know will pay off as time goes on. While running isn’t “easy” it still feels really good which I am grateful for. If only it weren’t so humid every single day…

I’ve actually been reading a ton of books lately, and have surpassed my goal of 6 for the year. Some of them have been pregnancy books (in May and June) and then I read a few books on vacation. So this is what I’ve read so far this year:

Roar by Stacy Sims
Running Rewired by Jay Dicharry. T
Mindful Running by Mackenzie Havey
Let Your Mind Run by Deena Kastor
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
Running Home by Alisha Perkins
Expecting Better by Emily Oster
The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng
The Mama Natural Week-by-Wek Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth by Genevieve Howland
(affiliate links)

At the end of June I said that my goal for July was to keep up with my supplemental workouts. I think I did pretty well with that. I got in all my strength training workouts and 1 yoga session per week. The mobility and biking have been hit or miss though.

I’m not setting any goals for August, other than to just keep doing what I’m doing for as long as I can!

How did you do with your goals in July?
Do you keep track of the books you’ve read this year?
What are you looking forward to in August?

You had a great month! Way to stick with staying active. I’ve been wanting to read Roar. Did you love it?

I remember really liking it, but at this point I read it so long ago that I don’t remember much about it! I might need to read it again at some point.

I’m going to add some of the nonpregnancy related books to my list! I love getting some new inspiration.

With marathon training really starting in July, I’ve decided to set little weekly goals for myself instead of monthly ones. So far so good with it!

You had a great July and I’m glad that you are starting to feel better! Every time I see one of your IG posts I’m so impressed with how much running you continue to do – I think it’s awesome!

Also great job on all your books read so far this year! I really need to step my game up when it comes to that.

I tend to read so much more in the summer, especially when I go on vacation!

Wow…all of those books! I spend pretty much all of my reading time on blogs…not a bad thing, but definitely time-consuming endeavor 😉 Your running has stayed consistent, even while pregnant 😉

I like to read when I sit outside…especially if I’m on vacation. So that’s when I get alot of non-blog reading done!

I’ve definitely been reading my share of books this summer too. I’ve kept track by posting some on IG but I keep a pinterest file for all of them, just so I remember which ones I’ve read. It’s fun to look back.

    Your doing great Lisa!

Oooh, I just got that Running Rewired book! Haven’t had the chance to dive into it yet – grad school problems – but I’m hoping to start reading it soon. I also wouldn’t mind reading that Mindful Running book.

I think your goals for August are perfect! Especially as your body is going to be changing and you’ll get to the point where you’ll have to slow down a little. 🙂

I highly recommend Running Rewired! I hope you have time to read it soon!

I do keep track of the books I read each year. The past few years I’ve read about the same number of books, which is easier since each year has more books in the multiple series I read.

This is the first year I’ve really been consistent about keeping track of what I’ve read, so I’m not sure how it compared to other years!

I’ve been trying to read more this year too… so far, so good! You’re doing awesome getting your workouts in- summer is the hardest time! The fall and winter will be ideal times to be toward the end of your pregnancy.

I am definitely looking forward to cooler weather in the fall! This summer has been tough between adjusting to running while pregnant and dealing with the heat.

It’s great that you’re feeling good and have been able to run as much as you have. I’ve been wanting to read Mindful Running – what did you think?

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      August 1, 2018 at 5:16 am

I liked it but it took me a long time to get through (because I was reading it when I was really busy) which I think made it harder to get as much out of it.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      August 1, 2018 at 5:17 am

I thought it was great! I read it so long ago now that it’s hard to remember much about it, so I should probably read it again at some point!

I never keep track of what I read, which sometimes means I get partway through a book and realize I’ve read it before LOL. My newest author I’m liking is Kristin Hannah, so I’m busy working my way through her books.

I always spend a chunk of August at my parents’ house and can’t wait to go there again this summer.

This is the first year I’ve been consistent about keeping track of the books I’ve read, and its been really helpful. I’ve definitely done that before where I start reading a book and then realize I’ve read it already!

You’ve read a lot this summer! I have a big stack of books for the year that I’m still working through, but I slowed down reading because July was a busy month. Your running has been so consistent with pregnancy, which is awesome! I hope August continues to go well for you.

Thanks! I tend to read more in the summer because of vacations and spending time outside. But I have a feeling as the year continues my reading will slow down!

I love Running Rewired. And I have a few others (Let Your Mind Run is next) on your lists that I haven’t started yet. Its August, the year is going fast, I need to get busy!!

The year really is going so fast! I’m glad I got a lot of books read so far because I’m not sure how many more I’ll be able to get through.

I commute via train, and one of my favorite ways to spend a weekend evening is waterside with a book. I don’t really watch TV or anything, so I read. A Lot. #ProudNerd

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
