Running for Two: Halfway There!

This was another good week of running, despite the never-ending humidity. Also, this weekend marked the halfway point of my pregnancy! Although I have a feeling the second half will be harder than the first. December still feels SO far away, so at least this makes me feel like I’ve reached a big milestone!

Running for Two: Halfway There!

As I have said before, I really hope I am still running this fall to enjoy the cooler weather. I don’t think we have had a break in the humidity in a good month or more. Every day the morning humidity has been at least 97%. At this point I sort of feel like I’m used to it, but it doesn’t make it any more enjoyable! While I love summer running, I also appreciate a break from the heat and humidity once in a while.

Here’s how week 19 looked:

Monday: 5 miles with hills + Mobility

I was excited to be able to cover 5 miles on this run. With limited time on the weekday mornings, 5 miles takes me much longer than it used to (especially if I stop to walk at all). I managed to run the whole time without stopping, and even did a hilly route!

monday run

Tuesday: 20 minutes spin bike + Strength training

It had been awhile since I rode on my spin bike. It’s a good way to shake out my legs and warm them up for a strength training session, but I’m just not feeling it for a “workout” these days.

Wednesday: 4.5 mile fartlek run

I’ve been bored of running the same pace day after day so I changed things up a bit.

1 mile warm up
1,2,3 minutes hard with same amount of time recovery
5 x 30 seconds hard with 30 seconds recovery
1 mile cool down

fartlek run

Thursday: Strength training + 3 treadmill miles

This was my last day of Phase 7 of my strength training plan! I was also in the mood to run so I got on the treadmill for 3 miles. It was my first time running on there in over a month and there was so much sweat!

treadmill run

Friday: 2.5 really easy miles + Yoga

Once again I was in the mood to run but I kept the pace REALLY easy and only did 2.5 miles. When I got back I did some yoga.

friday run

Saturday: 12 miles

I got out later than I would have liked for this run which meant I was not only dealing with the humidity but also the sun by the second half. Luckily I brought my Camelbak which has been a lifesaver this summer. It is hard running with it in the beginning because it adds weight but I am always glad to have lots of cold water with me!

As I said on Instagram I am pretty sure I splashed people with sweat as I ran by them. Lovely, right?

saturday 12 miles

Sunday: Rest

I felt like I did not recover as well from my long run this week. Last week I ran 11 miles and felt pretty much fine. This week I did 12 and really felt it the rest of the weekend. I am thinking there are a few factors that played into it:
-running 4 days in a row leading up to this run
-not sleeping well the night before
-last week I laid outside for a few hours after my run. This week we drove to Annapolis and walked around the mall looking at baby furniture and maternity clothes
-it was hotter and more humid than last week, plus I got out later

So moving forward I will try to learn from this. I felt good during the run, it was just afterwards that my legs were sore and I was more tired than I would have expected. (Then again, work has been busy and I haven’t been sleeping well so that could be why I am tired!)

How were your workouts last week?
Who else feels like the humidity is just never-ending?
Ever splash people you ran past with your sweat?

Sounds like you are doing well! The humidity really has been intense-even here in Maine. Best wishes as you continue running for two!

Thanks! It seems like the humidity has been bad lately just about everywhere.

Wow you are doing awesome! The humidity here has been miserable too, I’m ready for fall running. Happy halfway point!

As much as I love summer running I think I’m ready for a break from it at this point!

I am amazed you are able to do all that you do at 20 weeks! Although we started last week with some cooler mornings, the heat really built up with a vengeance last week ending with a few triple digit days. Fall running is going to feel fantastic!

I usually don’t mind the heat too much but the humidity has just been unbearable. You are right that fall running will feel amazing!

Halfway is so exciting! Saturday was just rough for a long run with the humidity. I always tend to feel my long run if I’m on my feet a lot afterwards

Agreed, I think I would have felt much better if I could have relaxed the rest of the day!

I have no words for the weather on Saturday – it was just flat out rough!

I totally see how this is the sweet spot of running while pregnant! Hopefully as it gets a little harder the weather will be improving.

Bored with doing the same pace is what started July’s speed training. I found I really enjoy intervals because I’m not thinking about the whole distance, but rather that interval’s distance. I feel you on sweat splash, also crowded events where brushing up against someone = sweat brush. Ick.

The sweat really is pretty gross, especially when its not your own sweat!

You had an awesome week, I’m glad running is going so well for you, especially in the miserable heat and humidity!!

The one thing I don’t miss about running right now is all the SWEAT, lol!

My last long run was 12 miles, and I felt it all weekend too! Of course, I’m not pregnant – so you’re a super hero in my book! Glad to see you are feeling good. The humidity is in full force here for sure! Blah. It made for a very tough run at my triathlon yesterday for sure.

I think a huge part of it for me is the mindset. I really didn’t know what to expect with running while pregnant so now I am so happy to be running at all that I am loving it- even if the weather is awful.

You’re doing so well! I do hope you get to enjoy running in the cooler months this fall. I do remember last year having a VERY hot September and it remained pretty warm well into October. (But I suppose if you ran in the morning it would be cooler, I’m not a morning runner).

      August 7, 2018 at 5:25 pm

Yes I remember the Baltimore Running Festival being in the high 80s, and that was mid-October! Hopefully we have a cooler fall this year.

Wow, impressive work even without there being two of you along for the ride! I get worried when I run past someone that there’s a kind of Linus-from-Peanuts fug around me, perhaps some small flies, ewww they go. Probably not true but it does worry me. I don’t THINK I’ve splashed a person with sweat but I’ve dripped on the cat at home!

I’m just super impressed you are running at any distance in any weather at 20 weeks pregnant. I hope things continue to go well for you. Having lower humidity will definitely help as you go through the remaining weeks. I don’t pass people to fling sweat on. But I definitely could! Thanks for linking.

I am definitely looking forward to the days when we have less humidity! It has to cool off eventually, right?

  14. Laura says

That’s awesome how well your running is going! It was humid here last week but thankfully this week has been more pleasant. I definitely feel more tired on my long run if I run for several consecutive days leading up to it!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      August 7, 2018 at 5:29 pm

I was surprised with how it affected me but I really think it was a combination of things. Although resting the day before a long run does usually help my legs to feel more fresh!

Running in the heat is hard enough and then adding pregnancy to the mix makes it even harder! You look wonderful – keep running smart and hydrating! My third baby was born last November and he was my first all-summer-long pregnancy. I drank a bunch of water and was thankful for the cooler Fall weather to come! I’m excited to follow your running and baby journey. Baby/pregnancy updates are my favorite :))) (I may or may not have baby fever setting in again… it’s dangerous!)

      August 7, 2018 at 5:30 pm

I am hoping that it cools off by the time I start to get really uncomfortable! While its definitely not easy running while pregnant in the summer, its probably better to be 5 months pregnant now than 8-9!

I love that you’re keeping so active. I have a friend who was trying to get back into running and when she found out that she was pregnant, she was like ” oh well, I guess I won’t be running for a while” … and I was like WHY??

    Kudos to you 🙂

I guess that everyone is different! For me it’s felt really good to keep up with running, but I’ve heard it was really hard for others.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
