Finding My Focus In Running and Life

LatelyI have just felt like my mind is all over the place. With running, blogging, work, my personal life...I think I just have too many separate things going on and I find it hard to really feel like I've gotten anything accomplished in one area. This week I've been working on finding my focus. #running #workouts #focus #goals

I’ve mentioned this before, but lately I have just felt like my mind is all over the place. With running, blogging, work, my personal life…I think I just have too many separate things going on and I find it hard to really feel like I’ve gotten anything accomplished in one area. This week I’ve been working on finding my focus. It hasn’t quite happened yet, but it’s a work in progress.

I’m trying to get better about writing down exactly what I want/need to get done each week. Also, planning out when I will focus on what. Monday through Wednesday are basically all about work (and sometimes Sunday night). Even with running and working out I feel like I need a plan or goal to actually feel accomplished. Luckily having these blog posts to write not only holds me accountable but also makes me realize that I did accomplish a good week of workouts!

Weekly Run Down: Finding My Focus

Saturday: 8 miles
Sunday: 4 miles

sunday run working on finding my focus

I’ve been dealing with the cold a bit better than last week. On Wednesday morning the real feel was 16 degrees so I ran on the treadmill. On Thursday it was in the 20s so I got out for a run early since I didn’t know if a stroller run would be possible later on in the day. Saturday’s run in the 30s felt like a heat wave! Then Sunday came and I got to run later (8am) and it was in the 30s but the wind made it feel pretty chilly.

Thursday run

I’ve still been working on prehab which I think has contributed to my feelings of being all over the place and struggling with finding my focus. Sometimes when I decide I am going to work on that stuff I want to do everything, when in reality a little bit is better than nothing.

In other news, Grayson turned 11 months old last week! I am not ready for him to turn 1. This year has just gone so fast and I am trying to savor every moment.

11 months

Also, Rob and I went out just the two of us for the first time since he was born! My parents offered to watch Grayson so we could celebrate our anniversary (which was November 10th- 7 years!). We went to our favorite restaurant, Flemings, and had a drink at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel where our wedding reception was held. This has been an annual tradition for us so it was nice to be able to continue it this year.

Ok, now I’m going to finish up this post so I can go make multiple to-do lists that will probably just end up making me feel more overwhelmed!

Do you have a hard time finding your focus when you are working on a lot of different things?
Have you been running outside?
Do you have any annual traditions with your significant other?

If it’s any consolation, I’m in a similar place myself. I am usually so organised and focused, but the last few months have really thrown me off and I’m struggling to get back into a proper routine and juggling all the different areas of my life. Writing things down really helps though. I’ve spent the first couple of hours of today, just writing everything down and outlining my week. Now it’s just to follow through. Best of luck on your end x

Thanks! Agreed, writing it all down helps alot! I think the hard part is finding the time to do the things I write down. I definitely procrastinate with the things I don’t want to do:)

I used to be so good at focusing on several things at once, when I kept up with my bullet journal. But… surprise surprise it’s fallen by the wayside since around July/ August time frame and I haven’t been able to pick it up again. I would love to get my focus back. I think it takes some dedication to making to-do lists, prioritising things and then doing them. I want to get back into the habit! I decided to stop biting off more than I can chew and scale back to one or two things so I don’t feel so overwhelmed. Do you use a bullet journal or planner?

The time goes by so fast! I can’t believe Grayson will be 1 next month! CRAZY!

Happy Annivesary! Sounds like a lovely evening out. For our traditions we usually travel somewhere for a special holiday or anniversary. We got engaged at a place that’s no longer open and married in Las Vegas so nowhere to return back to for our anniversary.

It’s not too bad / cold here so I imagine I would be running outside until there were ice on the ground!

I just have a regular planner. I also type notes into my phone when I think of things I need to do. I’ve never tried a bullet journal but a lot of people swear by them!

I’m right there with you. I make a daily to-do list and check things off to try to stay on task. That said, work stuff gets done but other stuff (like a haircut) is long overdue. Running is definitely not a focus for me now. Happy Anniversary! How fun to revisit your wedding spot. We got married in a mansion and we’ve gone back a few times. It was cool to show the kids…not that they cared. Haha! Grayson is the cutest little guy!

Thanks! Its definitely nice to go back to the place we got married. Lots of good memories! I’ve sure your kids will appreciate visiting there one day:)

Woot!!! My last two runs (Saturday morning, and just 30 minutes ago) BOTH were outside 😉 I was trapped inside most of last week due to the crazy extreme cold. I tend to make a lot of lists, too…for the same reason as you (too many things happening in several different directions). Happy Anniversary!

I think the best part about lists is checking things off of them:) Also just having things written down makes me feel better. Otherwise everything is in my head and I know I will forget something!

I hate to tell you this, but after having kids, my ability to focus never got better. I joke that I have ADHD! Seriously, tho, even though I’m all over the place, I am excellent at multitasking. Mom skills. You’re doing great. Glad you were able to get out into the cold. The fresh air does wonders to clear the head!

You know, I was sort of worried that this feeling of being all over the place wouldn’t go away! Make sense though. I’ve gotten better at multitasking and also at letting go of control (a little bit, haha). I would imagine as kids get older there are even more things to do and to worry about!

oh gosh yes. When things get too cray, I definitely make lists. When I have a bunch of stuff on my list that I don’t necessarily want to do, I’ll assign myself a few “don’t want to” projects for each day and when they’re done my reward is that I don’t have to do any of the other “don’t want to” stuff until the next day.

I usually take Sunday as a rest day, but for the past two weeks Sundays have been gorgeous so I’ve been outside getting in my runs while I can.

That’s a great idea to spread out the things you don’t want to do! It sounds easier that way but also ensures they get done.
It’s nice to take advantage of the weather on the good running days!

Happy Anniversary! So cool that you have that tradition with your husband. I also have so many things going on and it drives me crazy. I need to make a list because then I cannot remember what I need to do. 🙂 Your little guy is handsome.

I don’t even have kids, but I know what it feels like to have your brain be all over the place… 😉 so you’re definitely not alone… (especially this time of year, it seems).

Glad you got away for your anniversary. Congratulations!

Happy Anniversary! I’m sure it was so nice to enjoy some adult time with just the two of you.
I hate that it is getting much colder out and we will have to resort to the treadmill much more now.

Thanks! It was really nice to get out.
I’m sure it will feel like a long winter if we are stuck on the treadmill more often!
