Finding Flexibility With My Running

This week was all about finding flexibility with my running. Starting on Sunday night, my whole week got thrown off. I ended up not doing any hard workouts, almost all of my runs were with the stroller, and it became an unplanned cutback week. I went into the week with a much different plan, and had to be flexible to make the rest of my life work around my running!

This week was all about finding flexibility with my running! I didn't get to do my speed workout and almost all of my runs were with the stroller, but I made it work. Here is how my week of running flexibility played out.

Weekly Run Down: Finding Flexibility With My Running

Monday: 4.1 Stroller Miles
Tuesday: Strength Training + 5 Stroller Miles
Wednesday: 3.6 Stroller Miles + Core/Glutes
Thursday: Strength Training + 4.4 Stroller Miles
Friday: Rest Day
Saturday: 4 Stroller Miles + Core/Glutes
Sunday: 9 Miles

Total: 30.1 Miles

My plan for the week was to follow a similar routine to last week. I was going to do a workout early Monday morning, lift and do easy stroller runs on Tuesday and Thursday, and do an easy run early on Wednesday. This would allow me to run early on the days my my mom came over and get out with the stroller on days I was home by myself with Grayson.

A Restless Night

On Sunday night I couldn’t sleep. I went to bed at 8:30, tossed and turned for hours, and finally came downstairs. I think by the time I fell asleep it was 1:30. Instead of getting up at 4 like I had originally planned, I slept until 5:30. Usually Grayson gets up at 6 so I wanted a few minutes before he got up to drink some coffee. Well wouldn’t you know, he slept until almost 7!

This meant we didn’t get out for a run until like 7:45, and my mom was was already at our house when we got back. Luckily my first meeting wasn’t until 9:30. I also got to do some work while he slept in, so it worked out ok overall. 

Family Run Wednesday

My plan to run early on Wednesday (or to do my workout from Monday) went out the window when Rob announced that he was going to run with us Wednesday morning and go into work a little late. Since he doesn’t run very often, and it’s hard for him to find days that his schedule allows for this, I changed my plans. It was also probably good to sleep in a little later and get that core work done early.

Virtual Stroller Relay

I had planned to participate in a virtual stroller relay on Saturday morning. Another runner on Instagram set it up and it was open to anyone who wanted to join. Basically she just made a list of all the participants in the order of our relay. We would run any distance with the stroller and then take a picture passing the snack cup to the next runner and tag that person in our post. This was a fun way to “meet” other mother runners and just do something different during this time of no live races!

Sunday Long Run

I moved my long run to Sunday, but little did I know that the humidity was making a reappearance. Big time. I planned to do 8 miles and seriously considered going home after like 2. But I decided to just take it 1 mile at a time, and by mile 6 I started to feel better. Maybe the humidity broke a little (but my phone said it was 100% before I left and after I got home) or I just got used to running. Who knows. But since I finally felt better I made it to 9 miles. Long runs can be so strange.

So overall the week worked out just fine. I’m supposed to do a 10k in a week or so that I am not prepared for. I was going to start doing some workouts about 6 weeks ago but I think I’ve only done 1 since then. I had taken some time off from running, then it was still so hot that I was completely unmotivated, and now its getting pretty close to the race and I don’t want to push it. So I will probably just wing it and see what happens!

    I have said this many times (not just to you, but in general…to anyone who was listening LOL)…I think flexibility is crucial with running (or any fitness). Things will come up, or our bodies will not always want to cooperate with what’s on the plan, so being able (and willing) to go with the flow is a good thing to embrace. It’s nice that your Sunday run all worked out!

      So true! I have to remind myself that right now there doesn’t even need to be a plan. Of all years, this is the one to really embrace being flexible!

    Sorry about the insomnia. You definitely started the week short on sleep! Being flexible, you still got in some good miles. Today was so humid!

      I still don’t feel like I am caught up on the sleep I missed that night! Looks like today will be another humid one.

    I’ve struggled with some long runs lately. You nailed it when you said they are so strange. I’ve got a live half this weekend. Should be interesting. I hope I have a better run than i did last weekend. Sigh. Sleep would help!

      I hope this next race goes better for you! Usually I do well with long runs, and I’m not sure what went wrong with my first few miles of this one. I definitely think the humidity played a huge role. It was also so foggy I felt like it was the middle of the night even when the sun should have been starting to come up.

    Flexibility is just crucial not only in this day and age but with a toddler. That was one of the most important things I learned after becoming a mom. You know what they say about the best laid plans…Looks like you had a pretty solid week none the less. Have a good one!

    I’m so flexible in my running that I just never do end up following training plans, but it’s all good. I got distracted from workouts this summer when I started running with friends, and for the past few weeks I just haven’t been able to handle running in the heat any more, so that was another pause on workouts. And now race season is here so my weekday runs are all going to be at a recovery effort.

      I think its good to be so flexible, and it sounds like you’re still getting your runs done so that’s great! I haven’t followed a plan this year and I miss it. But I know there’s no reason to be rigid when there are no races to work towards.

    You’ve definitely had to pivot this week and that’s a great skill not only for running but for life! Kids are so unpredictable. A stroller relay sounds fun!

      Yep, life with kids is definitely unpredictable! It gets tricky but maybe I’m starting to learn to go with the flow (a little).

    So sorry about the insomnia! I deal with that sometimes too so I know how frustrating it is.

    If 2020 has taught me anything, it’s that I need to be more flexible and be kinder to myself. I’m very type A so I like to have a schedule but sometimes things pop up so it’s always good to be able to pivot.

      Totally agree! This is such a weird year because it’s the perfect time to be flexible but I’m still holding onto my old ways. I need to work on going with the flow a little more!

    Great job!

    I’m pretty flexible. I like to have an idea of when I’m going tot run so I can make sure to get enough sleep and set my alarm to get up early. However, I can switch if need be.

    Your stroller relay was so cute! How creative and fun!

    Oh no to Grayson sleeping later the day you thought you had no time to run in the morning!

    There’s a lot I haven’t been able to do lately because we just can’t leave Lola for hours at a time, and we can’t take her hiking with us like we normally would. Heck, we can’t even walk her really yet! It’s been a real bummer for me, because I’ve been basically taking care of everyone for a month & I was looking forward to finally doing something for myself. Hopefully next week. There’s always next week, right?

    I’m lucky that I don’t really work — although I work a lot on my YouTube channel, it just doesn’t pay — so I can be flexible. Which is nice!

    Here’s to a better week. You know you can do the 10k (heck, if I can, almost anyone can, LOL!). Mine certainly wasn’t a PR, nowhere close, but I never set out for one.

      The nice thing about the 10k is I have a few weeks to do it. I was planning to do it this weekend but I might put it off now and get in a few more workouts. We’ll see.

    Winging it is key when you have little ones! My week is out of whack due to my work schedule and I’m having a hard time remembering what my schedule is. I live by my online calendar (Cozi!) so hopefully my family will get to the right places this week. Love the idea for a stroller relay!

    I really agree with Kim’s comment about flexibility being crucial to running. Being able to get the runs or workouts done even if they are in a different order or unplanned distances, etc. So very well done – this week tested your ability to be flexible almost every day!

    How fun was the virtual stroller relay! I mean I did not do it but still looks like fun. 🙂

    I’ve never dealt with insomnia but lately have not been sleeping well. Or is that the same thing? I blame it on stress. I remember when I would go to sleep between 9-9:30 and sleep till about 6pm.

      The stress can really affect sleep! Usually I sleep pretty well so having a terrible night of sleep really threw me off.

    With the on-and-off fires and bad air quality here in California, I had to be really flexible with my runs lately, but I love that I am able to be flexible because I am working from home!

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. Feeling like I’m in a good place with 6 weeks to go! How was your run today? #run #marathontraining #longrun
