Thinking Out Loud #32: Winter Complaints

Happy Thursday, everyone! Please bear with my today while I take some time to share come winter complaints! Do you know that when I went to write that sentence I had no idea if it was “bear with me” or “bare with me”? So of course I turned to google:

Answer:

Bear with me is a standard expression used as a request for forbearance or patience.
Ex: Please bear with me a moment so I can find the homework exercise for you!

Bare with me would be an invitation to undress.

(from here)

So now that we have that cleared up, let’s move on. Luckily over at Amanda’s blog Thursday’s are for Thinking Out Loud, so that’s what we will be doing today. So now that we have that cleared up, let’s move on. So now that we have that cleared up, let’s move on. Luckily over at Amanda’s blog Thursday’s are for Thinking Out Loud, so that’s what we will be doing today.

1. It’s really winter now. Which means I am back to complaining about the weather. I think I make it a few months in the spring and fall where I am content with the weather but all winter and summer I seem to have one issue or another. I should probably have moved somewhere with milder temps, but it’s too late now.

source

2. We got a few inches of snow on Monday, which doesn’t sound too bad, but Baltimore doesn’t know how to salt or plow the roads. Almost all of the other school systems besides Baltimore city were closed, and we didn’t even have a “delay”- however, it took some of the teachers 4 hours to get in (which should have been a 30 minute commute) and buses were an hour and a half late. One of our buses got into a minor accident. There was a bad accident in the other county that had opened school not too far outside of Baltimore.

It took alot to get a snow day when I was growing up in NY, so I’m not saying that everything should close all the time- it would just be nice if the roads could be salted and cleared a bit when we knew it would snow during rush hour.

3. Snow on Tuesday means icy sidewalks for the rest of the week. I learned this lesson quickly last winter. The day of the snow it’s usually fine for running, but then it melts and freezes and becomes a big mess. Plus we are supposed to get some freezing temps with crazy wind chills this week, so I guess I’ll be taking my workouts indoors.

icy

4. My planned fartlek workout didn’t happen on Tuesday (see above). I decided it really wasn’t worth falling down and risking a real injury. Usually it doesn’t even take snow for me to fall, so I figured it would be best to keep it at a slow, controlled pace.

5. On Wednesday morning I ran on the treadmill and took body pump. I have actually been doing my short easy run before class on the treadmill for the past few weeks, even though I hate the treadmill and avoid it at all costs. I decided this year to prepare for having to run on the treadmill in bad weather by practicing. I know that might sound weird, but when I run on one regularly it actually gets a little more comfortable. The added bonus today was being in front of a TV with the news station on. It was constantly reading off all the school delays…I waited patiently for 30 minutes for Baltimore City to show up but no such luck.

treadmill

I always run much slower on the treadmill than outside. Especially for the first mile.

6. My workouts so far this week have consisted of running, body pump, barre, and yoga. It’s amazing how much harder everything else feels to me compared to running. After body pump it hurt to blow-dry my hair.

7. I have been doing pretty good with my New Year’s goal to plank 5 days a week. I have been trying to hold them for about 2 minutes or until I start to shake. Considering last summer I was able to plank for 5 minutes I know that I have really been slacking on my planks lately, which is why this is a good goal. I just need to keep up with it all year!

plank

8. Lately I have been feeling more than ever like there are not enough hours in the day. I wake up earlier and earlier and still don’t get everything done. Part of it may be the adjustment back after the break, or I just keep putting more things on my plate. Between running, working, blogging, “other workouts” (like yoga or barre that I do after work) and cooking Whole30 meals (which are mostly new to me) I just feel like I never stop running around. I guess that’s a good thing because these are all things I want to do and I’m pretty sure I function my best when I am busy.

9. I’m pretty sure January is my least favorite month. But February is a close tie. It’s probably a good thing I am doing the Whole30 or I would probably end up drinking way too much wine over the next month.

9 seems like a weird amount of things to share, but that’s the kind of day/week it is I think. Thanks for listening to my complaining and be sure to check out what everyone else is thinking about today!

Yes! Yes! So true about slower running on the treadmill. I’m a solid one minute per mile slower on that thing. Whenever I crank it up to my usual road speed, I just about fly off. And yes to never enough hours in the day, and triple yes to January being the least favourite month. Rawr.

      January 9, 2015 at 12:43 am

I’m glad I am not the only one who is slower on the treadmill! I definitely can’t do speed work on there!

  2. Susie @ SuzLyfe says

    January 8, 2015 at 11:52 am

    Let’s not talk about it….
Yeah, speed work isn’t going to be happening like I had planned!

I’m just trying to accept the fact that structured training won’t be happening for my half in March. I’m actually not too upset about it- it will be kind of nice to not have a set training plan for once!

You had to know I was jumping down immediately to comment about what it was like to get a snow day on LI! OMG!!! My district NEVER closed. I would watch them all flash across the news12 screen, all closed, except for me! Do you remember the blizzard of 96? Best feeling ever when it said – all schools closed…all schools closed….Ha! As for my son, he is of course in the district I recall from growing up that closed every time it started to flurry. You know this isn’t fair to me, right? I harbor serious anger about it…Anyway, I hate winter, I didn’t used to but now I do and yeah, my path is covered in ice for the last couple of mornings…And interestingly, I run faster on the treadmill than outside.

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 12:49 am

It’s so crazy how different areas can be so different about snow days! Here in Baltimore I have seen schools close when it was just raining and today we ended up having a delay just because of the cold. I just don’t understand how they make decisions!
That is interesting that you run faster on the treadmill! I think part of my problem is I pay more attention to how fast I am running whereas outside I may go faster if I feel good without necessarily trying.

The current temperature in Carrboro, NC is 10. 10?!?! I have to wait for the bus in that coldness! I know Maryland does not know how to handle snow at all, and I’m really nervous for when we get snow here because NC is worse (if you can believe that).

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 12:51 am

Oh I can believe it! I guess whatever areas don’t get as much snow are less prepared for it. But since I’ve been in Maryland we have gotten enough snow that you would think they should be able to handle it better!

  5. Amanda @ .running with spoons. says

    January 8, 2015 at 12:30 pm

Our winters here are so bad that I don’t even bother complaining about them anymore. I figure that if I can’t change it, I might as well make the best of it… so I try to approach it with humour. Which can be hard when it’s -30C outside and my eyeballs are freezing together when I blink. And I hear ya on not feeling like there are enough hours in the day. I don’t know what the heck happened, but all of a sudden I feel like I have a never-ending to-do list. Or maybe I’m just really bad at time management.

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 12:52 am

I don’t know how you can possibly deal with the cold up there! I don’t think I would ever go outside.

  6. Michele @ paleorunningmomma says

I have completely slacked on planks and have no plans to go back to them. I honestly don’t know how much planking helped me performance wise, and god help me I hate doing them. I’m enjoying doing yoga and I’m hoping that gives me a bit of core work! I haven’t found a great online barre video yet but i’m still looking. Every time I do one I’m a little disappointed. I haven’t run on the treadmill yet and will most likely avoid it at all costs 🙂

    • [email protected] says

I’m sure the yoga will give you a good workout! Boat poses get me every time.

  7. Kristina says

    January 8, 2015 at 1:17 pm

Wow, it really does sound like you could have used a snow day or at least a delay for school the other morning. Hopefully after the bus incident the school will rethink their policy next time!

I know EXACTLY what you mean about your husband not knowing how you’re always busy doing something. Adam is always saying, “baby sit down,” but he doesn’t seem to realize there are a million things to do! 😉

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 12:54 am

Funny enough they gave us a 2 hour delay today due to “extreme cold”. It’s crazy that that gets us a delay but not unsafe driving conditions!

  8. Megan @ Meg Go Run says

    January 8, 2015 at 1:23 pm

I hate January too! It is THE. LONGEST. MONTH. I also hate March. Once April comes, it’s the magical countdown toward summer and the end of the school year…

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 12:55 am

Yea March is rough too! I am always hopefully that March will bring warmer weather but usually its still cold and gross.

  9. Lesley says

    January 8, 2015 at 1:46 pm

It’s so cold in Dallas right now, and I swear all old buildings don’t have the proper amount of insulation. I’m moving to a new apartment at the end of the month and I can’t wait! My current place is so drafty, I can’t stand it anymore. I should have to be under layers in my own home with the heat going.

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 12:56 am

Wow that sounds crazy! I hope that it warms up for you during your last few weeks there!

  10. Jess says

    January 8, 2015 at 2:29 pm

This weather is not my favorite. I woke up to -4 temps this morning and -16 wind chill. I hate the treadmill, but I hate frozen nose hair more.

Curious to hear how your Whole30 is going! I did one two years ago and I’m gearing up for Whole30 round 2 starting Monday.

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 12:57 am

So far the whole30 is going well, but its only been 4 days! This is my first time but I have been eating mostly paleo for about 6 months.
I agree that sometimes its better to just suck it up and run on the treadmill!

  11. Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says

    January 8, 2015 at 2:38 pm

I so hear you on all these fronts. I can’t seem to get as much done as I would like during any given day. I workout and try to fit in extra stretching/yoga at home. Meal prep, etc. It all adds up to a lot! Glad the Whole30 plan is going well for you though and keeping you busy. January can be a dreary month without any plans.

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 12:59 am

It’s crazy how there can never be enough time in the day to do it all!

  12. Cheryl says

    January 8, 2015 at 2:46 pm

My kids have “virtual” snow days if the weather is too bad (maybe 1 a winter). They have their work online that has to be turned in–it really takes away the magic of a snow day!

I need to start doing planks again too. Wow, 2 minutes is a great place to start!!! I know mine is under a minute!
March is my least favorite month. It is still winter here, and I am SO READY for summer by then!

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 1:01 am

That’s really interesting! I wonder if more schools will start doing that in upcoming years. I’m sure it does take away from all the excitement of a snow day though!
You’re right that March is a bad month too! I am always hopeful that it will warm up but it still ends up being cold and usually rainy!

  13. Lauren says

    January 8, 2015 at 3:05 pm

Yeah I started laughing this week about how I thought about training for a spring marathon. I can’t even run outside the past couple of days because falling on the ice and breaking something is an unpleasant thought. It’s been a lot of treadmill and indoor classes which is a nice change but my happy cold runs outside are few and far between now. The sidewalks near where I am are half cleared, half sheets of ice. Greatttt.

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 1:02 am

That’s how it is near me too- I’ll see like one sidewalk that’s cleared and then the next one is coated with ice. I remember that from last winter and the few attempts I made to run in that were near impossible. I’m trying to just accept that I’ll have to cut back a bit on running this winter and take my workouts indoors more often that I would like!

  14. Lizzy says

    January 8, 2015 at 3:44 pm

I grew up in a place that only got snow a few times per winter, so everything just shut down. When I moved to Wisconsin for college I was amazed by how everything would just keep on going even through some brutal winter weather. Winter really is less miserable if your city/region has the infrastructure to support proper road clearing and de-icing. It sounds like Baltimore is not one of those cities. I’m sorry to hear that 🙁 and I can’t believe you didn’t even get a delay! I think that if you have to put up with crappy snow removal you should at least get a little extra time in the morning.

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 1:04 am

      January 9, 2015 at 1:07 am

That’s true- I always think that March will be better but it’s usually just as bad as Jan and Feb!

  18. Cat says

    January 8, 2015 at 4:11 pm

Funnily enough, I was trying to decide which is worse today: January or February. I’m going to go with Feb, because it pretends to be all cheery with valentines day, whereas Jan is honest and makes no claims to offer us anything other than being broke and chubby from the holidays.

    That said, Feb is shorter…

PS glad you cleared the bear/bare one up for me – I’m sure I’ve been asking people to get naked with me a LOT until now 😉

      January 9, 2015 at 1:09 am

  19. AJ @ NutriFitMama says

    January 8, 2015 at 4:45 pm

Yay! Someone to complain about the weather with! I absolutely hate the cold. I just want to stay curled up by the fireplace all winter, but obviously that isn’t feasible. I hate running in the cold. It hurts. I can’t breathe. I apparently don’t know how to layer properly because I am too hot or too cold- never perfect. I think living in San Diego SPOILED me for life. Looks like I just need to be somewhere that has year round perfect weather. haha.

I really don’t know why I decided to stay on the east coast! I complain about the winter every single year! I haven’t figured out how to dress appropriately for the cold either- I guess we have a few more months to figure it out, right?

I know I sound super silly for fussing about weather given that I live in Atlanta…BUT it was a wind chill of 5F this morning!!! WHAT?! Southerns live in the South to avoid all that mess. January is the worst! I don’t hate the cold as much as I hate the wind. The wind always makes my cheeks feel raw…ouch! I love the graphic for #8. Men just don’t get how our minds stay so busy all the time.

But I love the blogging so even though it takes a good amount of my time I still want to find time for it. Even if that is at 4:45 a.m. ha

This arctic blast is driving me crazy. When it’s icy, I don’t go out running – I’m kinda clumsy you see and I’m so afraid of injuring myself out there. Great job on getting your planks in btw! I’m sure you’ll get back to 5 min pretty quickly if you keep it up! I’m working on that too – my goal is to do a 5 min one by the end of the year 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 1:14 am

January is the worst month! Where we live is just southeast of Lake Michigan so we get tons of snow/negative temperatures/harsh winds that make winter just miserable. Today it’s -10 degrees, -30 windchill, and 25-30 mph winds. I complain so much about winter because I hate feeling trapped inside. My sanity saver is having a treadmill in our house and the likelihood of us moving to somewhere milder.

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 1:15 am

    • [email protected] says

      January 9, 2015 at 1:18 am

That’s funny that you run faster on the treadmill! I’m not sure what slows me down but probably a combination of worrying that I will fly off and paying too much attention to my pace.

  28. kilax says

    January 8, 2015 at 9:45 pm

I think prepping to run on the treadmill was really smart! We have the same snow/ice conditions on our streets right now so I hit up the indoor track today and yesterday. Luckily a friend joined me, otherwise, I was not quite mentally prepared for it!

Dang, I am impressed with a 2 min plank, but 5?!? That rocks! You’ll get back there!

To answer your complaining about weather question… I don’t, really. It just is what it is, and… I really like the dark, cold, and snow. I know. Something is wrong with me. Winter is one of my fave seasons!

I hope the commute to school is better this week! Man! Four hours?!

Love that we both complained about school closings on our blogs today. Umm that Rotten Ecard about women’s minds is so true. That is why some nights it takes me forever to fall asleep because I feel like I think of great blog posts, things to cook or whatever else when falling asleep. Nice plank challenge. I need to work on my form so that I can hold plank better. After a minute I am usually done, but maybe if I tried every day or even just the 5 times a week like you are doing. Love that idea.

Ha! The clarification of “bear with me” vs. “bare with me” was funny. And now I completely know the difference! So thanks! And yes, I was ranting today about the cold as well. I live in Arkansas and it was even only feeling anywhere from negative 5 degrees to about 15 degrees here today with the wind. What the heck?!

I feel like I wrote half of this post! Get out of my brain!

January is my least favorite month…it’s still dark, there is still huge chances of Big storms coming our way and it’s SO FREAKING COLD! I could write a three part book series on how much I hate the cold!
Weather has been weird here too! School was cancelled today due to -22 wind chill temps and we have a giant population that walks to school daily so I think that’s why it was cancelled.

Someday soon you will be back to outside fartleks!!! Fingers crossed
It’s next week!! (I can’t believe it was Christmas two wks ago and I ran in shorts!)
    Happy weekend!

Sorry for getting in your brain again!! (I feel like I do that a lot, ha- we must be living parallel lives in different states or something).
I completely agree with your reasons for hating January. We are only 9 days in- yuck!!
Next week is looking like a cold/rainy/icy one here but maybe the forecast will change! Have a great weekend!

This weather SUUUUUUUUUCKS!!!! I’ve been on the treadmill all week and I guess I’ll be doing my long run on there too because they still haven’t cleared our sidewalks and I think it’s supposed to be around 9 degrees on Saturday morning. The weather people and all the road crews seriously dropped the ball on this one.

They really did- hopefully they learned their lesson! Good luck getting your long run done!

I would have guessed that Baltimore would know how to salt and plow roads, knowing how intense your winters are! I’m really thankful that the metropolitan area I live in is, generally, on the ball with snow removal. Even on days that they aren’t, we never have such severe delays on our roads. Four hours is insane!

You don’t know the life of a runnergirl, babe. J You don’t know the life of a runnergirl, babe. Just living that 3:30am alarm clock life and chugging gels like it’s my job. #longrun #marathontraining #lifeofashowgirl
Has to be a quick dance party because I’m alread Has to be a quick dance party because I’m already running late! Why does this album get stuck in my head during all of my runs? #running #marathontraining #lifeofashowgirl
19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. Feeling like I’m in a good place with 6 weeks to go! How was your run today? #run #marathontraining #longrun
