Five Things About My Day

When I saw that the topic for the Friday Five this week was “Five Things About My Day”, I started laughing at the irony as I was trying to put this together on Thursday. It was quite a day! Unfortunately I can’t share too many details about my day at work…partly because of confidentiality and partly because it would just be inappropriate. So at the end of a pretty crazy week, let’s see what I can come up with!

1. Even though I’m not running in the morning, I’m still getting up at 5am. It feels good to get my day started early and ensures that I will get my PT stuff done. I’ve been foam rolling and doing my exercises as soon as I wake up. Then it’s time for coffee,  blogging, and breakfast.

2. As I said yesterday, choosing clothes has been a huge pain lately. Rob told me this morning that it’s a good thing I have a job or he wouldn’t expect me to ever wear anything besides sweatpants. When he leaves for work and gets home I am in either sweats or workout clothes, so he is really just assuming that I wear something more appropriate for work.

3. My work day was…interesting…And that’s an understatement. There’s never a dull moment, so I guess that’s a good thing! Sorry for being so vague about this. If we ever meet in real life I will tell you a story or two:)

4. After work I made my way to DC for packet pick-up or the Rock N Roll half. Getting there was just as annoying as I expected. The silver lining(s): It was a nice day to be walking around outside, and I got my steps in.

dc

Traffic home was not fun at all.

5. Since I wouldn’t be home for dinner, Rob was in charge. Taco night! We always make our own seasoning now using this recipe. The other ingredients we use vary based on how we are feeling. Tonight was ground turkey, peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, salsa, and cheese.tacos

I’m linking up with Courtney, Cynthia, and Mar!

Is there bad rush hour traffic where you live?

What toppings do you like to eat on tacos?

That sounds like a nice early morning routine! I’ve been finding it tough to wake up early this week since once again it’s so dark. A few more weeks of dark runs now!

The dark mornings do make it tough! Hopefully not for much longer!

Ahhh, I’d do anything to hear some inappropriate work stories! Dammitall. I know the no-share feeling though. It’s like Jerry Springer over here at the best of times and MAN do I have some gooders! Hopefully one day when we’re farther removed from it all, I’ll be able to write about them. 😉

      March 14, 2015 at 5:47 am

Haha, I would love to hear your stories too!

I am so glad I work at an elem school and can get away with leggings all day as well! Today is a teacher in service day so I am reaaaally dressing down today!

When I stopped running for a few weeks I still got up early too! It made me miss running less to go about my routine as normal. I think that is important to keep you sane and also ensure you get the PT stuff done. Cause face it, PT exercises are not fun!

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2015 at 5:48 am

I dress pretty casual at work but still complain about it:) It definitely helps to make you feel better to keep up with a regular routine even when you’re not running!

Yes to leggings for life! And yes, terrible traffic here as you know. It’s either 20 minutes on a good day to get just about anywhere or three hours in traffic.

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2015 at 5:49 am

I am pretty grateful that I never really had to deal with traffic since I always worked weird hours when I lived there. My dad worked in the city and I remember he would leave super early and come home late and that was the only way he didnt have to sit in hours of traffic.

Thse tacos look so good! I am waitressing part time and studying full time and if it wasn’t for my job I would never get out of my workout clothes! I pretty much only wear my waitressing clothes and leggings at home these days! 🙂 the traffic in Sydney is bad but I don’t drive and just walk everywhere 🙂

    March 13, 2015 at 7:31 am

YUM! I have not had tacos in forever. I actually already requested that my mom make them for me next week. It looks like it was an absolutely beautiful day in DC. It looked pretty here yesterday but it was cold again!
I’m happy today’s Friday because it means legging day at school because I don’t have any clinical assignments! And I would love to hear a story or two about your job 🙂

Leggings for life! Now that I work from home, I wear leggings all the time. Those Tacos look so good! We had steak, avocado, and goat cheese tacos this week, and omg goat cheese is so good on tacos. DC looks beautiful this time of year!

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2015 at 5:53 am

I’ve never tried goat cheese on tacos- sounds interesting! We usually do avocados too but didn’t have any this week

  10. Susie @ SuzLyfe says

    March 13, 2015 at 7:58 am

I definitely still get up early even when I don’t run–it is just such a part of my routine. And I wake up, so might as well get up! I am so happy that right now my concept of “rush hour” is walking quickly across traffic. I do not envy those stuck in rush hour around Chicago!

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2015 at 5:55 am

There is no way I would want to drive if I lived in a major city. Baltimore is weird because we don’t really have public transportation (besides busses- which still have to sit in traffic) and most things you can’t walk to. I did like that I was able to drive to the DC metro outside of the city and take that to the expo- I wouldn’t have wanted to drive directly into DC!

  11. Salt says

    March 13, 2015 at 8:56 am

You know where I live and UGH YES TRAFFIC.
Good luck tomorrow!! I can’t wait to hear all about it and wish I was there too. I have to run a half marathon anyway so I don’t know why I didn’t sign up. So many awesome folks are doing this race!
Even when I am not exercising in the morning I can’t really sleep late anymore. I do like the feeling of getting my day started early. I wear a lot of leggings too, especially right now during our weird transition weather. No shame. 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2015 at 5:57 am

Im actually not running (went to the expo to get Rob’s bib because he wouldn’t have been able to get there in time after work)- I would have given you my bib if I knew you wanted to run! Hey its not too late if you still want it:)
I am sad to be missing it but I know its for the best.

  12. Lesley says

I easily have more workout clothes than work clothes. I find it difficult when I need to shop for work clothes and I just keep wearing the same stuff over and over.

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2015 at 5:58 am

I know what you mean! I love shopping for and wearing workout clothes:)

    March 13, 2015 at 9:16 am

I love tacos and those look fabulous! Our toppings vary too, but I love black beans, rice, jalapenos, corn, tomatoes, spinach, onion, green pepper, and salsa! Yum!

Your morning routine sounds great! I have been thinking about starting to get up earlier again before work to get my day started. I used to, but got out of it because I was spending so much time working out in the evenings, but getting up to read blogs and enjoy some time at home before craziness sets in sounds nice.

I am a physical education teacher, and group fitness instructor. Thus, I never wear anything aside from leggings and workout clothes. When I have to get ‘dressed’ it is a disaster b/c I struggle with what I want to wear so badly! If I had to go back to wearing real clothes everyday, it would really be bad!

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2015 at 6:02 am

By the time I drove back from DC the other night it was late enough that I had missed most of the traffic, so i was happy about that!
Ive never done guar on tacos but we usually do avocados!

  15. Elizabeth says

    March 13, 2015 at 10:05 am

leggings are the best! I live five minutes from my office so I don’t deal with a lot of traffic, but when I’m commuting from my boyfriend’s that’s a different story. I’ve become a master of the back roads.

    P.S. Those tacos look delicious!

Tacos are my favorite! We like to make fish or shrimp tacos when we’re in a hurry, and Salt Lake City has awesome taco carts. I like cabbage, pico de gallo, and some sort of nice, hot salsa. Actually, I’ve been doing tacos about twice a week lately…it’s probably time to find a new obsession 🙂

I’m the same way with sweatpants/pj’s…putting on real clothes is the hardest part of the day. Happy Friday!

Ah, I feel you with the work silence thing. I really can’t say much about what I’m doing right now, other than that it requires me to spend half my time in Indiana and it’s part of finishing my research. It’s super frustrating because I am so open about so many other things!

I hope you ended up with a fun race shirt after dealing with that traffic!

I’m actually not running due to an injury, but went to get our packets because my husband is running and he wouldn’t have been able to get to the expo in time after work. But I have done it twice (I was there last year too!) and its definitely a great race!

  21. Tara @ Running 'N' Reading says

    March 13, 2015 at 12:29 pm

I’m kind of thankful for my PT exercises, Lisa; it gives me something to focus on when I’m not running and I feel like I’m improving myself each time. Even though we live in a relatively small city, we do have some traffic snafus; people seem incapable of driving in the rain without having accidents and the downtown area (where we had packet pickup for our recent marathon event) is always a bear. I’m glad you got everything done! Best of luck on your race this weekend; I can’t wait to hear all about it!

    • [email protected] says

      March 14, 2015 at 6:08 am

Sadly I won’t be racing this weekend- my PT and I agreed it wouldn’t be a smart decision. But my husband is doing it so I went to get our packets because he wouldn’t get there it time after work.
Its always good to focus on PT when you can’t run!

We have such bad traffic over here too, I live just 40 minutes from New York City so rush hour is a time that I try to avoid.

I noticed your breakfast scramble has sweet potatoes. I eat sweet potatoes allll the time but never for breakfast, I suppose I should try it because it looks yummy.

Taco night is one of my favorites! It’s so fun! We make our own seasoning too..at this moment I can’t think of what is in it though. I usually make a big batch at a time!

    Happy weekend my friend!

Mmm I love ground turkey in tacos :). I usually have ground turkey, lettuce, fresh tomatoes, cheese, ketchup (weird I know, my mom had done it for years and I always thought it was so gross, but if you like ketchup it’s actually really good!), sometimes salsa with that, and then some yogurt ranch.

Mmmm tonight is taco night in my house. I can’t wait. I am literally counting down the hours until it’s an appropriate enough time to start dinner 😉

I deal with awful Miami rush hour traffic. My office is about 20 miles from my house, but it takes me about 45 minutes to get to work and about 60 minutes to get home each day. Definitely the worst part of my day, but I love my job and colleagues so I deal with it!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
