in Monthly Goal Check-In · August 3, 2015

A Look Back At July 2015

I definitely feel like the spring and summer months always go by faster than the winter months. That makes sense, because every winter I feel like I am stuck inside and constantly complaining about the weather. Even though I complain about the humidity, I would much rather deal with that than the ice/snow/wind etc.

july

Now that July is over, it’s time for my monthly check in to see how I am doing with my goals. You can read my other monthly recaps here:

January 2015

February 2015

March 2015

April 2015

May 2015

June 2015

2015 goals

-While I am not sure if this will be the year for a sub-1:40 half, I am finally signed up for my first (and probably only) half-marathon on 2015! I’m running the half in the Baltimore Running Festival in October, which I also ran last year.

-I know I won’t be running 2015 miles this year (I’m at 500 as of August 2nd), and I will probably run about 7-8 races.

-I’m still doing alot of my strength work and will continue doing so as I start marathon training. My coach has helped me to incorporate my rehab exercises into my training 3 days a week, as well as a session dedicated to strength training.

-This was probably my worst month of planking. I’m hoping to get back into the habit when my training plan says “core work” because planks are one of my favorite core exercises.

-This month I read Summerlong  by Dean Bakopoulos which I read about on Tara’s blog. I am looking forward to reading alot of books when I go on vacation thanks to all the recommendations I got last week!

-I’ll talk more about my marathon goals in another post, but my focus for this year will not be a BQ, but rather to finish strong and healthy. Considering I didn’t even know if I would do a marathon in 2015 I don’t want to push my luck.

-I feel like I have not been good about variety this month, especially now that I don’t have a gym. But I did take a week almost completely off from running at the end of the month- that should count as variety! It’s something I don’t do very often, but I wanted to rest up before I started training this week.

July 2015 Stats and Highlights

Total miles: 94- another new monthly high for the year!

Best run: This is tough because I can’t really remember which runs were from July and which were from other months? I do know one of my favorites was getting out to explore the NCR trail.

ncr trail

Also, racing the Pikesville 5k– I felt strong and back to my pre-injury speed!

pikesville 5k

Favorite Non-Running Activity: I guess I would have to say strength training, although I think I said that last month. My options are limited these days.

I can’t even believe we are in August. More shocking to me was realizing that September is next month. It’s just crazy to me how fast it is going. I say it every year but geez, I don’t know where the summer went.

I’m definitely not ready for September! It’s really just knowing what is ahead that I don’t like- even though the next few months will be ok I never want it to get cold again.

Great month leading up to training! Love the 5k picture of you. Strength training is something I want to get into at some point but clearly it’s not happening right now. You have great variety in your workouts.

I’m sure you get a lot of strength work in withall of the yoga that you do! But maybe its something to try adding in after your done with the NYC marathon.

I bet Baltimore in October is very pretty! My July highlight has been getting back on my bike after a knee injury and my August goals are to continue to rehab my knee.

    • [email protected] says

      August 3, 2015 at 8:44 am

It can still be kind of hot in October, but usually we get pretty good weather. I kind of wish the race was a few weeks later so it was cooler and looked more like fall. But still, its one of my favorite races!
Good luck with continuing the knee rehab this month!

I think I am the opposite, I would rather deal with the cold/snow etc. I just wither in the heat and humidity!
You look so STRONG in that running picture!!
My August goals are to continue with marathon training, which will be harder with the kids activities ramping up!

      August 3, 2015 at 8:46 am

I wouldn’t mind it being a bit cooler but I feel like lately the winters have been so bad that I really don’t want to deal with it again.

  6. Susie @ SuzLyfe says

I have no idea what August will bring. July was so crazy and hectic and weird and all over the place…. what if August is “normal”? I won’t know what to do with it!

      August 3, 2015 at 8:46 am

I’m sure that there will be some level of craziness- I mean, isn’t there always? And I think sometimes the best months are the ones we go into without any expectations.

Awesome month! My July mileage turned out to be 106, which is high for me but lower than I was aiming for because of Dumbo (trying to get comfortable with multiple days of back to back running, especially since my cousin and law school BFF I’m running with are both already faster than me and will leave me in the dust!) I wasn’t planning on racing in August due to traveling, but now I am doing a 10K about 12 days before Dumbo while I’m in London. I’ll take it easy and it should be fun to see how they run in Hyde Park in their race series – as I was reminded, no mile markers 🙂

Looks like you had a great month in July! I am the same way, I will complain all day about the heat but it is so much better than mountains of snow and ice. I’m so excited for August because it means fall is just around the corner, and fall is the best time for everything, including running.

    • [email protected] says

      August 3, 2015 at 10:12 am

I do love fall, but I know winter follows not too far behind it! And I can’t help but feel like we just got to summer. I’m not ready for it to be over yet!

Summer is fleeting for sure! And I think global changes have made the really nice weather come later and later. It didn’t really heat up here until mid-July and the kids will go back to school in a few short weeks. You’ve had a really solid month and I’m excited for your marathon training. My July highlight was Europe, of course.

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
