Wedding Weekend #1 and Weekly Recap

I am calling this “wedding weekend #1” because I have two weddings this spring for friends I have known since Kindergarten. The first was this past Friday: my friend who we call Williams (it’s his last name, but really that’s all I know him by!) and his new bride Sherrie.  I’ll share a bit about the weekend and then my weekly recap.

first dance

Rob and I took the day off work on Friday because the wedding started at 6pm in New York. We took an 11am train so we were able to take our time in the morning before heading out. I ended up running 12 miles, which felt good but is not the smartest move before traveling all day and dancing all night.

We made it to Long Island around 3:30, grabbed a small late lunch, and headed to the room to rest up and get ready. The traveling went really smoothly and wasn’t bad at all, but sitting for 4 hours straight after a long run is not ideal!

wedding

6:00 was wedding time! There was a short ceremony followed by a cocktail hour and then dinner and dancing. It was great to see all my friends, many who I only see at weddings now!

friends

I think it was around 12:30 when the wedding finished up and we headed up to our room to pass out. Even though I didn’t drink a lot (although more than I usually drink anymore) it’s really the staying up late that wears me out! Of course we woke up by 6am, tired but unable to sleep in. We had to leave at 9 to start our trip home.

One of the nice things about a Friday wedding is being able to come home on Saturday and still have a day to recover. I was really glad that I didn’t have to go to work the next day!

So, here is how my week of workouts looked overall:

Monday: 6 miles with 6 hill repeats, core and hip exercises

hills

Tuesday: 3 easy miles plus strength training, PM: Yoga

Wednesday: 5.6 miles with 5 x 5 minutes hard, and 2 minutes easy in between

tempo

Thursday: 3.3 miles easy, core and glute work

Friday: 12 miles + lots of walking and dancing

long run

Saturday: Rest!

Sunday: 4.1 easy miles, core work, plyos, foam rolling

Total: 34 miles
Walked: 22.4     Push-ups: 3 days
Yearly Total: 910/2016

Do you prefer Friday or Saturday weddings?

Are you able to do a long run before traveling all day?

How were your workouts last week?

when I saw you were at fox hollow I was like – she is right by my house! I can’t believe how close you were! Friday night and even Saturday night parties are so fun – it’s the sunday twilights that aren’t as fun since everyone has Monday morning on their mind

I can’t believe you live so close to Fox Hollow! I am gonna E-mail you over the next few weeks because I will be back on LI for another wedding in June and I am hoping we can meet up!

I prefer late nights on Saturdays so I can recoup on Sundays. Fridays are okay, but after work I usually just want to go home!

Nice week – and a twelve miler – you’re still a distance runner! 😀 haha

Its tough to stay up late after a long day at work! I only like Friday weddings if I get to take the whole day off:)

Great workout week, Lisa! I can’t wait to start running long (like 12 miles) again! That isn’t going to be for another 3 weeks, according to my Hanson plan!

Thats crazy how long it is until you do 12 miles! I feel like I always end up jumping into those long runs during marathon training. The slow build up is probably much better!

Your dress is stunning – love the color! Staying up late always wipes me no matter how far I run, but long runs definitely add to the fatigue. Nice work on your workouts! The hill run sounds fun in a hard way!

Thank you! I have done 18 and 20 milers before weddings and those really wore me out. I guess in comparison 12 isn’t so bad!

I agree with you about the long runs before a long day of sitting/traveling. In one respect, it’s so nice to get it in because you’ll be sitting, but the other aspect is that I’ll feel so sore and the blood doesn’t circulate as well! I love Friday weddings and having an extra day to recover after getting home. It’s usually needed!

I think the best part was getting the long run out of the way and not having to worry about it the rest of the weekend!

Love you in that dress! The day before (or maybe the day of?) that we went to Pittsburgh last year was my 20 miler for Phoenix. Slap some compression on me and we’re good, lol. I also did a 16 miler the morning of a wedding that we had to drive to last year (the infamous picture). I like a Saturday wedding. But I’m not too picky as long as I have the rest of the day to do my thing!

I have done 18 and 20 milers before weddings too and I don’t feel like they get in the way of enjoying myself! Compression socks can be a lifesaver in those situations.

Staying up late does me in too because I don’t sleep in. I got to bed later than normal on Saturday and I was awake before 6:30 yesterday morning. I didn’t get out of bed right away, but I wasn’t happy I was awake that early.

Exactly! I feel like it takes me days to catch up on the sleep that I lost because I can’t sleep past 6.

Long runs before traveling/sitting all day kill my legs. Good for you though for getting those miles in! I’m still waiting for all of my friends to get married haha weddings are fun. And they have cake…

It’s funny because I remember 10 years ago feeling the same way (my first friend’s wedding was when I was 23 I think) and now I feel like they have been non-stop! They are fun, but exhausting and expensive (especially when most are out of town). Now I am getting to the end of that phase and I’m sure I will miss them in a few years!

Looks like a fun weekend! I have 5-6 weddings this summer and all will require some logistical shenanigans with NYC Marathon training but so worth it!

    • [email protected] says

      May 23, 2016 at 7:33 pm

Wow, busy summer for you! It’s tough to fit the training in around all of those weddings, but I’m sure you will be able to do it!

I don’t like going to weddings at ALL. I have such a hard time sitting still for very long. The getting dressed up part is fun though! I love your dress. You look AMAZING in that colour. And if you spill wine on it, it’ll just blend in!

      May 23, 2016 at 7:34 pm

Luckily there was very little sitting still at this wedding. And good point about the wine! I am sure I have spilled red wine on there and didnt even notice!

Wedding are always so much fun. You two look so nice. Great job getting your 12 miles in before heading out. I did 8 the other wk then drove for 7 hours. It felt good doing that, knowing that I’d be sitting for that long afterwards.

How nice to enjoy seeing your friends and take in a wedding this weekend. You dress color looks fabulous on you too!
I would more than likely get in my long run before I left too. That way I feel less guilty about eating all the wedding food!

What a fun weekend! I’ve only been to a couple of Friday weddings but I always feel like they make the weekend seem extra long – even if I still work a half day on the Friday. It’s like doing something on a Friday evening kind of kick starts the weekend!

I love your dress – and that colour totally suits you!

Thank you! And I think the Friday wedding did make the weekend seem longer. It definitely helped that I got to take the day off work on Friday!

i like to get some kind of run in before a long day of travel, makes me not feel so bad for sitting the rest of the day. granted its not always an option when a flight is at 7am but hey we try! looks like you had a great week with some solid runs!!

    • [email protected] says

      May 24, 2016 at 4:41 am

Yea early morning flights can make it tough! Otherwise I do my best to squeeze something in before traveling.

Looks like a beautiful wedding. I’ve never attended a Friday wedding but it sounds pretty great, starts late and you get to party into the wee hours of the morning. I’m the kind of girl that likes to workout before any trip I go on, but I usually opt for yoga, spinning or strength training, I’ve never tried running before a big trip but I can see how that might not be the best idea.

    • [email protected] says

      May 24, 2016 at 4:42 am

I think those other workouts would be great before a trip! It’s the long runs that really tire out my legs.

You got in some great mileage this week! Since I run so early, I can usually get a run in before we travel anywhere. I think a Friday wedding is a great idea! It would also give you extra time to make a weekend out of it and do some sightseeing if you chose. However, I do not like arriving home late on Sunday. It’s stressful. You look lovely in your dress. It’s a gorgeous color. It sounds like a fun event! Thanks for linking with us Lisa!

Coming back from a trip on Sunday evening is the worst! Even though it was a Friday wedding we chose to come back on Saturday so we would have a day to recovery before heading back to work.

  18. Karen @ Fit in France says

    May 26, 2016 at 12:16 pm

I have 3 weddings coming up and in France they are always on a Saturday. It starts in the afternoon, followed by cocktails, dinner then dancing. I am actually really excited to see lots of family I haven’t seen in a long time.
I hear you about running then sitting. I travel a lot for work and often try to run in the morning before I have to take the train or fly somewhere. Not always the best thing, but only way I can fit it in !

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train. Feeling like I’m in a good place with 6 weeks to go! How was your run today? #run #marathontraining #longrun
