What I Ate And Did On My Day Off

On Tuesday I was off from work (okay so I only worked Monday this week, and before that I hadn’t been in since 12/17 due to being sick and traveling…) and it was really nice to have a day at home rather than using a vacation day for traveling. However, I have a hard time sitting around and doing nothing, and I always like to feel productive when I am off from work. Rob always says that he is glad I am not a teacher because it wouldn’t be fair if I got to sit around doing nothing all summer. I have to laugh because I highly doubt I would do that. I always manage to keep busy. Even when there is nothing to do I find something to do. So on day 1 of being off and being home I kept very busy, as expected.

I woke up at 5:45…no alarm, that’s just when my body wants me to get up these days. I had some coffee and water and read a few blogs before heading out for my run.

run

I did 4.5 miles and it was rather uneventful. I planned to go to a yoga class at 9:30, so I wanted to do a shorter run and also have time to eat in between. I ate a banana as I was cooking breakfast and then ate a scramble with eggs, sweet potatoes, bacon, tomatoes, onions, and peppers.

breakfast

I headed to yoga and on the way dropped off the dry-cleaning. Multitasking is my favorite. Class was good- relaxing and not too intense. It was a hot yoga class but not as hot as I like. Also not as many hip openers as I would have liked, but still a good practice mentally if nothing else. The instructor also had a good message about why we come to our mats- for the physical, mental, or spiritual reasons, all of the above, or something we are uncertain about. I think each time I hope to get something different out of class.

yoga

I got back around 10:45 and decided kind of randomly to take an Epsom salt bath. I hadn’t done that since I was training for the marathon so it felt good. I wanted to head out to do errands but figured I should eat lunch first since it would be a couple of hours before I made it back. I had a small salad since I wasn’t super hungry with spring mix and leftover chicken, topped with a tomato flavored dressing.

salad

Leggings and Uggs for the win. Honestly if I didn’t work I would never put on real clothes.

leggings

I headed out to Target which is always a big deal since its not super close. And we all know how dangerous target is. I pretty much stuck to my list but still did more damage than I would have liked. Isn’t that always the case?

I stopped for Starbucks while I was out since I got  $55 in gift cards for Christmas:)

starbucks

I also brought some Nuun along for the ride.

nuun

I also had another secret stop along my way- more on that tomorrow!

When I got home I got to work cleaning out the bathroom. I am really bad about stuffing junk under the sink and never throwing anything way. I think I had about 50 half used travel sized bottles of shampoo. I went through everything and organized it and threw away a ton of stuff. I also got rid of some junk under the bed and boxes from the holidays. Then I cleaned the bathroom. Always a good feeling to get stuff like that done!

garbage

I still wasn’t too hungry (which was weird- I think when I am busy I don’t pay as much attention to my appetite) but I knew I would need a snack in order to make it to dinner. So I ate an apple with peanut butter. Yes I am aware that there are about 5 servings of peanut butter on the plate. Please don’t judge me, it was delicious.

apples

I did some blogging and before I knew it Rob was home from work. The day went so fast! I was glad I have a few more days off to get more stuff done:)

Dinner was burgers with sweet potato fries and spinach. Simple but so good.

dinner I also enjoyed a Christmas Ale which is from Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland. If you are ever in Cleveland in the winter months you must try this! (if you like beer.) Rob and his dad picked some up last week and brought them to Michigan for the beer tasting. We divided up the remaining ones so we have 3 here, and will try to maker them last as long as possible but I’m sure they will be gone quickly!

I spy pro-compression socks…

Dessert was these cookie dough bars. Not at all healthy but so good! I am thinking about figuring out a way to make a healthier version, but I’m sure they won’t be as good.

I just realized that the next time I post it will be 2015! I’ll be looking back on my 2014 goals tomorrow, so if you aren’t too tired be sure to stop by!

Your breakfast looks delicious and now I want to get up and start cooking it for myself!! Yum!!

I can be either SUPER productive or RIDICULOUSLY lazy. Hardly ever is there a happy medium! Yesterday I read most of Unbreakable and THAT was about it!!

I’m looking forward to your 2015 goals!:)

That sounds like a nice relaxing day! I actually did a lot less today which was great. Spent most of the day doing blog stuff which I actually find super enjoyable and relaxing:)

I have never used an alarm in my life- is that weird? I am jealous of your gift cards to starbucks! And yes to leggings and uggs! Totally my daily wardrobe- there has to be way for you to make it work-acceptable. Get a pair of the “fancier” uggs with the bows on the back or the glitter!

    • [email protected] says

      December 31, 2014 at 6:23 pm

Wow I can’t believe you never used an alarm! I definitely needed one in college. And I still set one even though I get up way earlier than I ever need to. It’s an OCD thing.
Oh and I do wear my Uggs to work! The leggings I will wear occasionally but I think I need some really long sweaters to make it work appropriate:)

Sounds like your days off were very productive. I have been wanting to try a hot yoga class now that it’s been so cold out. I also got a huge gift card feom Starbucks for Christmas. …..yay! I love taking epsom salt baths. They are so relaxing.

Hot yoga feels so good in the colder months! Enjoy your Starbucks gift card:)

We have so much in common 🙂 Black yoga pants and black uggs are what I wear everyday, your dinner is what I eat twice a week and I also always seem to need more hip openers with yoga! That is now becoming my biggest requirement with yoga, of course as a runner that makes sense. The cookie dough bars look so good and I’m really tempted to figure out a paleo version now, although I’ve been making too many treats.

      December 31, 2014 at 6:24 pm

Haha that’s too funny that you do all of those things too! I think I need to get in the habit of just doing my own yoga hip openers regularly. Its’ not fair to blame the instructor when there’s no reason I can’t do them on my own!

YES to all 😀 As Alex said this morning…. “Only Susie would get up earlier on her day off than her doctor husband and be working on her blog” hahahaha hey, in my defense, I did try to go back to sleep for an hour before getting up…. But I can relax pretty hard too 😀 Happy New Year!

      December 31, 2014 at 6:25 pm

I am such a morning person so if I want to get anything done it has to be early. I can relax more later in the day if I feel like I’ve been productive:)

  6. Megan @ Meg Go Run says

    December 31, 2014 at 1:35 pm

Okay, so other than the cookie bars, you look like you follow the paleo diet? Am I right, or was that just a coincidence?

    • [email protected] says

      December 31, 2014 at 6:27 pm

I pretty much do! I started over the summer and its pretty much become a habit to eat that way, but I’m not strict about it. I eat peanut butter, occasional grains, and when I travel all of my habits pretty much go out the window. But its helped me to clean up my diet a lot and now I eat more fruits and veggies than ever before!

    December 31, 2014 at 1:37 pm

Sweet potatoes and eggs are a perfect match. I’ve never tried adding bacon to the mix. I’m assuming it takes the meals to a whole new level? 🙂 I never use an alarm clock. I wake up up 4:30 and start on Joshua’s meals for the day.

    • [email protected] says

      December 31, 2014 at 6:28 pm

Wow 4:30 without an alarm is impressive! Usually I’ll wake up naturally by 5:30 but I’ve set my alarm for 4:30 if I want to do a longer morning workout before work or get some blogging in. I don’t really mind waking up that early but I really don’t want to become someone who wakes up at 4am everyday! It makes it hard when I am out with other people and I am ready for bed at 8:30!

I am not a huge fan of relaxing on a day off. I like to be productive and then unwind at the end of a day. But it always feels so good to get a lot done. I have a long list of to-do’s and cleaning now that we are back in Austin. Happy NYE! Have fun.

Oh my gosh those cookie dough bars look amazing! I think they would be deadly for me to have around. And NO JUDGEMENT on the PB portion. I am right there with you. I agree when I work from home and am doing errand my mind isn’t centered around eating so I often times am not as hungry. When I am sitting at a desk I feel like I am always thinking about food. Happy New Year!

    • [email protected] says

      December 31, 2014 at 6:32 pm

Exactly- and I think my normal routine is sort of revolved around food so I get hungry at certain times! When I have the flexibility to eat whenever I want it kind of throws me off!

I feel the same way about days off. I get antsy if I’m not accomplishing anything and then the day seems wasted. Also, if I worked from home regularly I would definitely be in leggings and a comfy sweater. No “real” clothes for this girl lol.

    • [email protected] says

      December 31, 2014 at 6:34 pm

The cookie dough bars look amazing! The past couple days I’ve run errands, cleaned the apartment a bit, and updated some blog content. I also made a Target trip and only bought 1 item outside my list 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      December 31, 2014 at 6:37 pm

I feel like I never can get as much done on a day off as I think I can. It’s like the hours just disappear somehow. Most of my days off lately have been completely consumed with house stuff, which can be frustrating, but it’s nice to see tangible progress being made.

    • [email protected] says

      December 31, 2014 at 6:38 pm

I have no idea where the time goes on a day off! I always have such high hopes of what I will get done and then the day gets away from me. I like making a list so I can cross things off as I get them done:)

  15. Robyn @ Robyn's Living Life says

    December 31, 2014 at 6:07 pm

Normally I get up early on my days off hut I’ve been off since the 19th so I have gotten used to sleeping in!

I also like to bre productive when I am off, but I have had so man says off that I have definitely gotten more relaxation than when I just have a few days off.

    Enjoy your New Years!

I think having a bunch of days off is key! I think/hope that by this weekend I will feel like I got a ton of stuff done and be able to relax bit!

  16. Alaina @ The Simple Peach says

    December 31, 2014 at 6:11 pm

I am with you on the real clothes thing. Who wants to put on jeans when you have yoga pants or leggings available? No one. That cookie dough fudge looks like trouble so I am just going to pretend I didn’t see how delicious it looks and move along…Happy New Year!

I don’t ever use an alarm clock anymore, my kids are my alarm clock…between 5:30-6 every day. I can’t wait until they are old enough to go downstairs by themselves and turn on the TV. I’m working on that skill 🙂 And I’m pretty sure I have that exact same outfit, seriously, the exact same top from LOFT is it? Black uggs and leggings., it’s like my uniform 🙂

This morning’s run was an adventure with bugs ev This morning’s run was an adventure with bugs everywhere, lots of mud from all the rain we’ve had, overgrown trees blocking the sidewalks, and 93% humidity. Better than wind and ice I guess! Did you deal with anything annoying on your run today?

Fall is pretty good too but there’s nothing like Fall is pretty good too but there’s nothing like seeing the sunrise on a morning run! As an early morning riser I would be fine with a 4am sunrise but I know that’s not for everyone so I will just enjoy the 2 months of the year when the sun is up (almost) as early as me. #morningrunner #sunriserun
Let them be your reason, not your excuse. I coul Let them be your reason, not your excuse.

I could sit here and tell you how hard it is to train with 2 young kids. How I rarely get a full night’s sleep anymore. How they got me sick the week before my race. How my SI joint just isn’t the same since my pregnancies. But that wouldn’t be fair, because I need to listen to my own advice that I give them about how to keep working hard and that there will always be obstacles to overcome.

After my race on Sunday I was thinking about how my Kindergartner has been working for a special award all year long. Many times he has told me he just wants to give up, because he works so hard for months at a time and still hasn’t earned it. I keep telling him that if he keeps working hard he will earn it, but what’s most important is that he gives his best each and every day. All those good days add up and even if he doesn’t earn the award, it will mean he had a great year.

Don’t I need to take my own advice and remember that all the good training days add up, even if I don’t get the outcome I want on race day? Before my race he kept telling me to do my best, and that he would give me a prize (artwork) even if I don’t win. So maybe all the lessons I am teaching him are starting to pay off? #motherrunner #halfmarathon #frederickrunfest
