A Little Taste of Spring

This first week of March brought a little taste of spring. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, though. We had plenty of wind and some of the mornings were in the 20s with a windchill in the teens. Still, it’s a huge improvement from last month. While all my runs still aren’t happening outside, more of them are and I’ve been getting in occasional stroller runs.

Weekly Run Down: A Little Taste of Spring

Monday: Rest Day
Tuesday: Strength Training + 4 Treadmill Miles
Wednesday: 6 Miles + Core
Thursday: Strength Training + 4 Stroller Miles
Friday: 4 Treadmill Miles + Core
Saturday: 9.3 Miles
Sunday: 3.7 Stroller Miles

I kept all my runs easy this week after last week’s 5k. I’ll probably start adding in some strides and hills at some point as I figure out what’s next.

Strength Training

After taking almost 2 weeks off from lifting before my 5k, I’ve been back at it for the last 10 days. Last week my quads were sore from lunges, but this week I’m noticing my upper body more. I’m back to doing banded chin-ups and feel like I’m making progress. Eventually I’ll be able to do them without the band!

Stroller Running

The sun was deceiving on Thursday. With temps in the 40s and bright sunshine, I thought it would be the perfect morning for a stroller run. My weather app said winds were 4-5 mph. It did say that a few hours later it would get windier. As we were out there the wind definitely picked up and it was a struggle to push the stroller or to even keep it straight. But I got to wear shorts (outside) for the first time this year!

Saturday Long Run

It was 22 degrees on Saturday morning, but the wind wasn’t terrible and there was no snow or ice on the ground! I got to see the sunrise about halfway through my run, and by the end it was completely light out. That will change after DST, so I’m enjoying it for now!

I ran 9.3 miles which is the longest I’ve done this year I think. I ran 9 miles once in January. Now that my 5k is over its nice to have a little more flexibility with my running!

My long run was 9 too 🙂 It’s a nice distance that still feels longer than most weekday runs.

Yay for spring weather! It looks like your paths have been nice and clear too, which is awesome. None of that melt/re-freeze crap!

I love doing 9-10 miles as my long run! Yes, our paths were finally clear! It was so much better than all of February!

Sometimes I am surprised by how sore I can get from a short Peloton strength class. I am only doing lower body once a week now bc it was making my legs too sore for running. It was crazy windy last week but this week looks incredible hope you get out there for your runs this week. Have a good one

I am so excited for outdoor running this week! My mom is going to be away so Im working from home and have Grayson all to myself all week, so I’ll definitely need time outside!!

I feel the after-burn everywhere, but I definitely notice the DOMS more when I do lower-body workouts. I think I overdo it without realizing it LOL Glad to have the spring temps, but the wind definitely has made its presence known.

      March 7, 2021 at 5:22 pm

The wind is pretty annoying. I’m just glad it’s not as cold as it was a few weeks ago!

That must feel good! Out with the stroller in shorts. My lower body gets way, way more sore than my upper from lifting. One possible exception is doing pullup “negatives” if I haven’t done them in a while- that leaves every single muscle in my torso sore. If you graduate to un-banded chin-ups I want to hear all about it! I’ve been doing pullups with the band for years.

      March 7, 2021 at 5:22 pm

I mean I will probably only be able to do like 1-2 at a time but I will be excited if/when that happens!

I’m so excited for spring! It’s just a little bit chilly but warm enough to be outside for most of this week which is a total game changer. I am so ready to get back to serious training instead of being stuck on the treadmill.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 7, 2021 at 5:23 pm

Usually I don’t mind the treadmill much but I’m really tired of feeling like its my only option. I bet I will go months without using it once it warms up.

Although it was super windy this week, I was happy with all of the sunshine and longer daylight hours.

I’ve noticed that when I really push myself by lifting heavier weights I’m usually sore that same day or the DOMS hits the day after. It’s definitely more upper body than lower body for me.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 7, 2021 at 5:23 pm

I usually feel it the next day too. Sometimes certain exercises really sneak up on my leaving me unexpectedly sore!

ahh I haven’t done a stroller run in so long! If it’s in the 20s my kids just get too cold and wanna get out and run themselves. But soon it will be warmer here and hopefully I can get in a stroller run again.Way to go with the wind!

      March 7, 2021 at 5:25 pm

I don’t really like taking my son for a stroller run if its under 30 but lately we’ve been desperate to get out of the house, and I have lots of stuff to keep him warm so I don’t think he minds too much. But I’m so excited to not have to put us both in a million layers before going out for a run!

    March 7, 2021 at 4:04 pm

My body is so unpredictable–this week I had really bad right wrist pain after doing handstands on Monday. I have no idea what is going on with my wrist. I think it’s RA. Meanwhile, I need to figure out how to do upper body stuff without aggravating it. I swear, it’s always something!

We’re supposed to get really warm this week and it will be coming your way! So hang in there!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 7, 2021 at 5:25 pm

That’s frustrating! I hope you can figure it out. I am seeing 70 degrees for Thursday and I am so excited!

So windy…like every single day ugh!

Congrats on a successful long run. Must feel good.

I am looking forward to warmer temps and more daylight!!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

Hopefully this wind will die down soon! The warmer temps and extra daylight will be so nice!

Way to get 9 miles! My lower body is always more sore than upper. Guess I need more leg days. It’s been mostly cold overnight and in the mornings but it definitely feels like spring is around the corner. I’m so looking forward to having all the snow melted. Hopefully this week!

Same here with the cold mornings and warmer afternoons. if it weren’t for the wind, some of the afternoons would have been really nice!

    March 8, 2021 at 7:00 am

we got a taste of spring a few weeks ago and now it’s getting colder and colder again! UGH. At least most of the time there is sun so I can’t really complain. but enough with the cold temps!!

9.3 miles!!! well done! I’ll be happy just to hit 9K at some point!!

my lower body is always the most sore from strength training. Maybe I need to up my weights a bit more on the upper body??

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 8, 2021 at 5:21 pm

I hope spring makes it way back to you soon! I don’t feel like we are completely out of the woods yet with cold weather. But moving in the right direction!

  12. Zenaida Arroyo says

    March 8, 2021 at 7:31 am

Great job on your 9 miles! I like that distance which is why for a race I do like 10 mile races. Not that many through. We finally had some nice weather and that made me very happy! I just remembered that I never ordered that pull up bar and bands that you suggested. February would have been the perfect time to use them since I wasn’t running much.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 8, 2021 at 5:23 pm

I bet you could still incorporate pull ups in your training now since it mainly works your upper body!

  13. Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says

    March 8, 2021 at 7:47 am

I get such bad DOMS! I started working with my new OCR coach this past week and holy crap she killed me with a lower body workout last wednesday. I was still sore on Saturday! It’s mostly my fault because I stopped doing lower body after my injury, but I am so out of shape in that arena.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 8, 2021 at 5:24 pm

I always get sore the first time I lift after taking time off! Hopefully next time it won’t be so bad!

  14. Debbie @ Deb Runs says

    March 8, 2021 at 8:36 am

Funny you should mention that your quads getting sore from lunges after taking time off from doing them for just a short time before your 5K. I always quit weight training with my legs about three weeks prior to my marathons and remember how incredibly sore I’d be after bringing lunges back into my routine after the race. It was like I’d never done them before!

Banded chin-ups are such a great way to progress to doing them unassisted. I haven’t done them for a while and need to get my band back out.

    Have a great week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 8, 2021 at 5:24 pm

Totally agree about lunges after not doing them for a bit! I used to take body pump but I would stop going before marathons. When I would go back after I wouldn’t be able to walk for days! I was more sore from that than from the actual marathon!

  15. Chocolaterunsjudy says

    March 8, 2021 at 9:11 am

What gets sore all depends on what I’m doing! I filmed a video with 3 leg dog pushups last week — many, I felt that one for days!

I ran 9 miles once or twice last year, while thinking that *maybe* the summer half would happen. Then the Achilles flaired and that was the end of all long runs!

I have no idea what’s next for me, either. Haven’t been into the virtuals in a while, and even though there is a smattering of RL races, I am not called to do those at this time either. I will probably feel more motivated when Spring actually arrives (and sometimes that’s not until Summer).

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 8, 2021 at 5:25 pm

I’m sort of waiting to get motivated by spring weather too! I keep going back and forth about what I want to do next.

  16. Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says

    March 8, 2021 at 12:38 pm

I’m happy to report that upper body lifting doesn’t leave me sore for more than a day, if at all. I used to be sore for days because I wasn’t lifting consistently so that’s a huge improvement for me! PT exercises are the extent of my lower body lifting these days.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 8, 2021 at 5:26 pm

Once in awhile I will do a different kind of upper body exercise that will leave me sore. But when I do most of the same exercises I don’t feel it too much!

  17. Michelle D. says

    March 8, 2021 at 9:32 pm

Congrats on your 9 miler! Of late DOMS has been bothering my lower body much more than upper.

The wind was just crazy this week, but at least the sun was shining. Hopefully, it will warm up this week!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 9, 2021 at 4:24 am

Thank you! Yes, I really appreciated having more sun last week! And this week is definitely looking promising!

Great work there and lovely to have got out in less clothing layers! It’s spring here, the ice is all gone and there are flowers to look at (and sneeze at!). I am loving the lighter mornings and evenings, too.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 9, 2021 at 7:28 pm

Yay for spring weather and more light! Its so refreshing after a long, cold winter.

I usually feel lifting in my hips and up. I don’t know why.

Yay for shorts! I’m sure that felt amazing!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      March 9, 2021 at 7:29 pm

It did! I think we will have some more cooler days after this week but hopefully no more winter weather.

Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect.
