Happy Friday! I’m taking a break this week from my Fartlek Friday posts to share some updates over coffee. It’s been awhile since I did this, and I felt like I just needed to chat! I’m still drinking coffee at home, of course.
Back to the office
Well there is one exception to drinking coffee at home. I’ve been going back to the office 1-2 days a week. Last Monday was my first day back. Our staff is split into 2 groups, so half go in on Monday/Tuesday and half on Thursday/Friday. I really didn’t want to go back because we are still doing everything virtually, so I’m basically sitting in my cubicle wearing a mask on Microsoft Teams. But once I got back it wasn’t so bad.
My schedule will be all over the place for the next few months. I’m looking forward to eventually getting back to a regular routine. But who knows when that will happen.
Getting my hair cut
Last week I finally got my hair cut after almost 2 years. I really needed one before COVID happened, and then I didn’t feel comfortable going. Once I realized I wasn’t going anywhere or seeing anyone, I really didn’t worry about it. But then it got BAD. It would take forever to comb or brush it. It never looked decent. I trimmed it on my own a few times which probably made it worse.
When I got it cut I said I didnt really care how short it went as long as I could still wear it in a ponytail. Since I was cutting so much off I decided to donate it. I chose Children with Hair Loss because they donate all their hair, they accept donations as short as 8 inches (compared to other places that ask for 10 inches) and they are ok with a little bit of coloring. I haven’t had my hair highlighted in 2 years but I wasn’t sure if it would be as issue. Even though I donated about 10-12 inches I know some of it may be damaged and they made need to trim some of it off.
Vaccine Chasers
I was pretty lucky to get my vaccine so easily through work. My parents had said how hard it was to get one for my dad who is eligible. Last week I decided to do some research. I joined a Facebook group and started getting alerts on Twitter. This process is a full time job! I was somehow able to get him an appointment pretty quickly, but its crazy what people are going though. And the guidelines are so unclear, its such a mess.
Sleep regression
I’ve mentioned this before, but Grayson’s sleep has been awful lately. I hope by the time I post this it gets better. He’s skipping naps or taking hours to fall asleep. Waking at 5am or earlier. Taking a long time to fall asleep at night. When I go in, he basically tells me to get out, lol. Like he knows he is tired and just can’t fall asleep. I’m going to blame teething and call it a sleep regression, and keep crossing my fingers that it passes quickly.
Brooks Glycerin 19
Recently Brooks sent the Run Happy Team a pair of the new Glycerin 19s to try. They are so comfortable! Last year when I got to try the 18s I fell in love, after never trying them before. I bought my second pair last fall. I never thought I liked a cushioned shoe but these have really changed my mind.
Still drinking coffee at home
Other than that, there’s not much new going on. For the most part I’m still drinking coffee at home. I actually haven’t bought a coffee since before last March! I’ve definitely saved money on that and getting my nails done. However, I’ve probably made up for it in Amazon purchases.

If you were working from home this year, have you gone back to the office at all?

Have you heard about vaccine chasers?

We wear masks all day at the office–and we have to wear the ones they give us, not our cloth masks. Some of the masks are really hard on my skin! So I keep a contraband box of the ‘good’ masks under my desk. Sigh. Yes, it’s getting old.
I am due for a haircut–I usually don’t go longer than 12 weeks and that’s where I’m at. Your hair looks great, BTW!
I think what’s weird about wearing masks at work is that I’m on virtual meetings and doing trainings all day and since I’m in a cubicle I keep my mask on. I’ve actually started using my nursing curtain again so that I can take my mask off briefly. Glad I never took it down last year!
Wow 2 years is a long time! Your haircut looks great and it’s so nice you were able to donate your hair.
I know what you mean about the vaccine appointments – it took a lot of juggling to get my parents theirs. The system has been a mess here!
Great to hear you like the new Glycerins – I’ve been curious about them. I loved my 17s!
Thank you! And it sounds like its been tough in alot of places to get appointments. Hopefully it will get better soon.
My parents were able to get their first rounds two weeks ago, but it took a lot of persistence on my dad’s part to get an appointment. The hubby and I are, frankly, in no hurry because we’re at the bottom of the totem pole LOL Last year, I was due for my 8/9-week hair appointment and all the salons shut down three (3!) days prior. I had to wait until the end of May, so it had been almost 16 weeks. UGH. I don’t have much for grey, but my roots were almost black and quite nasty LOL
I know some people really struggled last year when salons shut down! I guess I was lucky in that I could manage to go so long without a haircut.
My in laws had to drive 2 hours each way through a blizzard to get their first vaccine and then jumped through hoops and drive 1.5 hours each way to get the second one somewhere else. It’s a total cluster. Your hair looks great and it must feel so good to finally get a haircut. It’s been a crazy year to say the least. Hope G’s sleep patterns normalize soon!
Wow, thats crazy that they had to go so far for their shot! But at least they got it!
Wow! That’s a lot of hair! Since mine is so curly it never gets really long — the curl brings it up. I love that you donated it! I haven’t had mine cut in a year. Probably one of the first things I’ll do when I get vaccinated . . . some day.
Overall I think we saved money this year — because, no travel. No pet sitting at all. Down to just two dogs, and now just one.
The lady who cut my hair said business has been so much slower during the pandemic. I guess thats no surprise. I felt kind of bad telling her I hand’t gotten a haircut in so long!
I’ve resisted joining the vaccine chase (for my husb, I’m not eligible yet), but wonder if that phone will ever ring if I’m not more proactive. Interesting on your work situation. We are still WFH but I’ve gone in a few times to get a new laptop or pick up FedEx packages. I sure hope Grayson is sleeping better soon!
Honestly I think if you want him to get an appointment you need to be proactive. Even the people that are actively trying to get appointments are struggling. The Facebook group was really helpful, but now that he’s gotten the vaccine I will be leaving (or muting) the group. Its very active.
your hair looks great! I bet that felt great to get back in there for one. I am sure it does feel weird to back to the office after all this time! Maybe it’s a nice break from monotony. I do remember the sleep struggles of toddlers! Hang in there. I’ve been a Glycerin fan for a few years and the 19’s do not disappoint!
Thank you, it did feel really good to get a haircut!
i love that you were able to donate your hair to such a great cause!
It’s kind of crazy how complicated it can be to land an appointment for the vaccine. It’s definitely can feel like another part time job for sure.
Definitely! Some people wake up in the middle of the night to try to get appointments because thats when some of the links open!
Always drink coffee at home. But still home …since March 17, 2020. I guess I saved money on Starbucks.
I have been trimming my hair since they opened but I think the next time I will cut it shorter. I get tired of the same old same old look. Mine is colored so they won’t take a donation sigh.
Even when things get back to normal I hope to not spend as much money on coffee out. Especially Starbucks. It really adds up.
I’ve been getting coffee per usual. I work in a hospital and we have a Starbucks. I hardly ever go to Starbucks outside of work anyways.
I’ve been getting haircuts regularly on the sly. My hairdresser has been seeing a select few and we both wear masks. 👍🏻
I think our salons have been open since last summer but I just wanted to wait until I had the vaccine. I’m sure its pretty safe if you’re both wearing masks and if she isn’t seeing a lot of other people!
I actually heard about the Maryland Facebook group on the radio and then a day or so later I heard that someone in Virginia started a similar group. I’m hoping that by the time I’m eligible the amount of vaccine being shipped will have increased greatly and getting an appointment for a vaccination will be much easier, but who knows?
I hope Grayson moves into better sleep patterns soon!
Have a great weekend!
I think that even over the last few weeks its been a little easier to get vaccine appointments. Hopefully it will keep getting better!
I have been to the office maybe 10 times. I am considering going in again 1x a week because, well, I’m just sick of working from home. But… if no one is in the office either what’s the pont? Change of scenery I guess. Since we’ve been working from home they’ve even changed the entry system. So I would first have to go and get a new badge… ugh. I don’t know.
I got my hair cut last August. I cut a lot off but not sure how much. I am certain you chopped off more than I did! Before that I’d had a cut and color in May.
My parents were having issues in New Mexico and dad and stepmom finally got their shot last week. Then this week his dr’s office called and asked him if he wanted the Johnson & Johnson shot. So now suddenly there are multiple vaccines available?? I haven’t heard yet if mom and stepdad are getting theirs soon. It’s impossible here, we just have to wait our turn. So I definitely hadn’t heard of vaccine chasers!
Sorry to hear about Grayson’s sleep! Hopefully he’ll be on a more normal schedule again soon.
I buy “to go” coffee about once a week to support a local shop. And I still buy Starbucks espresso beans which we seem to go through like water over here… we haven’t saved any money – we bought a house! ha!
Thats nice that you buy coffee at a local shop! We don’t really have anywhere like that, just a Starbucks thats close by. You had a big year with your house purchase!
I love the new ‘do! It looks great. So nice that you can donate your hair to such a worthy cause. I feel for you with Grayson’s sleep regression. Some of my kids went through that when they were toddlers, and it was not fun! They did eventually grow out of it, though. We somehow all survived. 🙂
Thanks! I’m sure it will pass, I just hope it passes sooner rather than later:)
Love your hair! It’s so cute. I’ve been going pretty regularly. My stylist has been awesome with safety protocols so I’ve been comfortable.
I hope your schedule evens out soon. I think the big changes after months of being home can be tough.
There will be alot of changes over the next few months but I hope by the summer we will be in a good routine!
My parents are thankfully retired now so my mom was able to secure appointments for her + my dad (and subsequently helped out her entire network of friends to be able to get them too) — it’s such a convoluted process right now! I’m glad your dad was able to get an appointment!
I haven’t cut my hair in a year and a half and have been avoiding high ponytails as a result of it (so heavy 🙁 ). Maybe sometime this year! I think the longest time I’ve ever gone without one is 2 years, so it’s not quite there yet, haha.
Thats great that your parents were able to get so many appointments! Glad I’m not the only one who goes 2 years without a haircut:)
We’re still FT from home, although I imagine we’ll be split when we do go back. I’m not sure how it’s going to work as our desktops don’t have cameras (or mics?) and we do a lot on Slack/Zoom.
I love your hair.
I have monitors at my office that I just connect my laptop to. I actually bought a $15 webcam and use a headset with a mic. But I think otherwise the expectation would be to just use our laptop for meetings.
I seem to go way too long between haircuts as well. I got quite a big cut of awhile back and donated it as well.
It feels really good to get a big haircut!
You must feel a bit better getting out into the world after having gotten your vaccine. What field do you work in that you were able to get it already? (I am so thrilled to hear when even younger people have gotten the opportunity already – every person vaccinated counts!!)
My employer is a large university hospital, and my position is in schools- so I got really lucky because the university was actually giving vaccines to employees and prioritizing us based on eligibility. Since I work in schools I was able to get it at the end of January!
I love your haircut!! I am due for another one this month but am debating if I want to let it grow a bit longer. I want something new but not much I can do with straight hair. I’ve also been back at school. For now it is not mandatory but it will be beginning March 15th which is also the date of Parent/Teacher Conferences (11:30am-7pm).
Thank you! Wow, that’s a long day of conferences. I hope it goes well!
While the folks who traveled a lot have laptops, most of us don’t as there was no need. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the setup works. I may bring in the second monitor I bought for home as unlikely to need it here when we go back FTish
