April Runfessions

Is it really the last Friday in April? It feels like April just started, probably because it JUST started to feel a little more like spring this week! Either way, it’s time for April Runfessions! What running confessions do you have to get off your chest this month?

April Runfessions

1) I’ve been feeling guilty about running on the treadmill all the time. I’m not sure why I feel guilty; it’s not like I’m missing good outdoor running days or anything. I guess it’s just because I have always been an outdoor runner and will run outside in almost any conditions, so this is new for me. I am thinking/hoping I will be back outside more when it actually feels like spring and summer.

2) I’ve been really surprised that my allergies haven’t been bothering me this season. I was wondering if it was because I haven’t been outside as much? Even after my Saturday runs the past few weeks I may have been sneezing a little bit but otherwise there were no noticeable symptoms. I guess it’s just another way to prove that it really isn’t spring yet.

3) Ever since writing my post about running Boston I have been starting to think about races. I’m still in the indecisive phase like I’ve been for what seems like forever. I don’t think a marathon is in the cards this year, but maybe next spring? The only problem with that is I prefer fall marathons. I’m not sure I want to wait until fall 2019, and maybe with the treadmill it will be easier to train for a marathon though the winter. I have plenty of time to decide.

4) In the meantime I’m thinking I could do a fall half. I don’t think I would want to do the Baltimore half as my goal race, but maybe run that for fun and find an easier course as a goal.

Baltimore Half-Marathon

5) As for 5ks, I really don’t have the desire to race another one any time soon. My last one just left a bad taste in my mouth for now so I’m gonna let it go. I was actually thinking about doing one for fun at the end of May (who am I??) but I think we may be away that weekend.

So those are my runfessions this month, basically that I have been running inside a lot and have no idea what races I want to do! I really hope when we are writing these at the end of May that we are complaining about a little bit of heat. (Not too much, but can we at least be running in shorts by then?!)

Do you get seasonal allergies? How have they been this year?
Do you prefer fall or spring marathons?
Do you like to run races just for fun?

I am a fall marathon girl all the way. The only spring one I’ve run is Boston. Thankfully I had perfect weather for those, although training got dicey, summer training may be worse with the heat. I feel like May will feel like April should have. Cannot believe kids are already counting down the days until they’re out here.

The summer training for a fall marathon can be tough, but then running in the cooler weather feels so good!

If I had a treadmill like that, I’d probably be doing more runs inside! I don’t think the allergy season has hit its peak yet…

I was worried that allergy season hasn’t really started yet! I didn’t think I could get off too easy…

I get extremely bad spring allergies where my eyes are constantly itchy and watery to the point it looks like I’m constantly sobbing haha. This year they have barely bothered me though! My best guess is that because spring weather hasn’t been around long enough to draw the pollen and what not out. I’m hoping the long winter means seasonal allergies won’t come!

I don’t think the worst of it has hit yet! I guess we will see.

I had seasonal allergies as a child, but they totally magnified in my adulthood. Several years ago, we did a major house remodel, and we were surrounded in drywall dust and debris for several months. My highly sensitive skin went into overdrive (and my sinuses were a mess), so I had to see a dermatologist and allergist…who put me on a (nearly) 2-year plan of (weekly) allergy shots. What a difference! I still get a little stuffy, and my eyes feel a little sensitive, but it’s minimal to the misery I had prior to the treatment. have you ever considered allergy shots? It was a huge commitment, but well worth it for me.

I’ve never considered that because I felt like I could manage them ok on my own. Its definitely something to consider though if they start getting worse!

I have really bad seasonal allergies but I have been good so far as well! Fingers crossed that lasts. I have done all my running inside since last October. I just hate hate hate the cold.

I wonder if it will ever warm up enough to be back to running outside consistently!

Ever thought that maybe your allergies are a bit better becuase you aren’t running outside all the time? That is points for treadmill running!

      April 27, 2018 at 6:48 pm

You are right, that is probably a big part of it! Definitely a plus for treadmill running.

I feel like if I had a treadmill, I would run inside more often because sometimes in the morning I feel a little “homesick”. Does that make sense? On those days, I will lift because I get to stay in my house with my cats for that. Although I do really enjoy being outside in the fresh air.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 27, 2018 at 6:49 pm

Yes that makes sense! There are some days when I really don’t feel like going anywhere!

Sometimes I feel bad for doing so many treadmill runs, but as long as I run outside twice a week (I run 4x/week), I think that’s fine. It’s a nice mix in my opinion.

Totally understand what you mean about trying to pick a race. It’s REALLY hard because there are so many factors. It took em weeks to decide on the Shamrock Marathon just because I was balancing everything – logistics of travel, course, costs, training in the winter, etc. I’m sure that you will make the right choice, whatever you decide.

      April 27, 2018 at 6:50 pm

Yes, there are so many factors to consider! And I think I am still nervous about getting hurt.

I wasn’t feeling training at all in the beginning of this cycle since I had to be on the treadmill. I didn’t like that, but I realized it was the way to get my training in this season. Last spring I was outside more, this year I’ve on the treadmill.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 27, 2018 at 6:50 pm

It must have been hard to start training in the winter when the weather was so bad!

I continue to knock on wood but I no longer suffer from seasonal allergies since switching to meatless diet. it’s the craziest thing and I can’t believe it therefore I don’t discuss it in fear of a jinx lol. And I think it’s fine you now like the treadmill! it’s great to know you can enjoy the indoor option rather than rely on weathering the elements at all times.

      April 27, 2018 at 6:51 pm

I always think of how meatless eating has helped with your allergies! I just don’t think I could do it. But its very tempting to try!

This spring has been so delayed, it’s weird! I have no judgment of you for using the treadmill, I’m going to do a quick run on one myself!

Training for a marathon over the winter was quite the experience, but I honestly think I prefer it to the summer heat and humidity.

I definitely have races that I run for fun…once this marathon is done, I’m definitely going to focus a lot more on that!

Its been such a weird winter/spring! Summer training is really hard but I really struggled with snow and ice when I trained for a spring marathon. I guess both bring their challenges!

I am guilty of spending too much time on the treadmill too, and it’s not even a weather thing, it’s an I don’t feel like leaving the house thing….haha

I like Fall , Winter and early Spring runs. I did a Summer trail series one year that started at 6 pm on a day in June, July and August and it was over 90 degrees each time. It Was Brutal!!

Wow, that sounds like a tough time of day to run! I think that fall running is probably my favorite.

I feel you on the “I should be outside”. There were ac ouple days after work where I headed to the gym and thought I really should be in the park. But it’s much easier to pack gym bag for indoor running than all the layers, since we can’t stick with spring. Touch wood, my allergies have been OK.

It’s nuts, I didn’t dress for winter today and had a meeting not even half a mile away. My cold feet! 100% gym day

I don’t have that many races under my belt yet, but both spring and fall races sound great to me because it’s usually the best time to run here in NorCal…. training through the heat in the summer can be tough though (I spend a lot of time on the treadmill… and you shouldn’t feel bad about it, if it is what works for you right now).

Training through the summer is tough but then at least I feel like Im rewarded with cooler weather for race day!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

#run #runner #marathontraining #richmondmarathon
15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
