Old Habits Die Hard

After my week off of running, it was nice to get back to it this week. I started the week with all these great ideas of how I would run outside and be more flexible with my workout schedule. Well, old habits die hard. My workout routine looked pretty much the same as it has for the last 6 months or so and I only got outside once. I did, however, continue to include yoga in my routine!

I went into this week planning to change up my workout routine, but I ended up doing the same exact workouts that I usually do. Old habits die hard I guess! #workouts #fitness

3 out of my 4 runs were on the treadmill again. For late April, the weather is not very inspiring. It was really the wind this week that was discouraging. The morning temps were in the 30s but felt colder than that due to wind. As I’ve said, I’m just not feeling like dealing with cold weather anymore.

Monday: 3.5 miles and core/stability work

First run back! It always feels a little weird to run after time off, but after the first mile I felt back to normal.

monday

Tuesday: Strength training and 25 minutes spin bike

Another strength workout and then got in some cross training.

Wednesday: 4 miles, yoga

I considered running more but I knew my body would appreciate some time on the mat. My upper body has still been tight and yoga seems to help loosen things up.

wednesday

Thursday: Strength training

I didn’t have time to run after my workout, which was fine. I didn’t want to run too much this week anyway.

Friday: 3 miles, yoga

Another easy treadmill run and another yoga workout. I was shocked that I did yoga twice this week. I really do go in phases where I will stick with it for  a few weeks and then not even consider it for months.

friday

Saturday: 7 miles

Finally, an outdoor run! It was colder than usual for this time of year, but compared to how it’s been I can’t really complain. There was no wind which made a huge difference!

saturday

Sunday: Rest

The usual Sunday rest day! I did get outside for a short walk though to enjoy the day of spring weather!

It’s going to be hard to get out of the treadmill habit even when the weather warms up. While I prefer running outside, it’s been so convenient in the mornings to use the treadmill. I think I will need to really plan my weeks ahead of time so I will put out outdoor running clothes the night before, that way I don’t have to decide in the morning.

I hope to stick with the yoga and try some different types of classes. I also think if I start incorporating some workouts like tempo or fartlek runs that will help to change things up and also probably get me outside!

It’s still chilly here–we get that lake breeze in the spring–but the wind is much less and so it’s really pleasant! I even went for a bike ride yesterday, which was a long time coming. I struggle trying to mix those rides into my routine–I hate missing out on a run!

It’s tough to figure out what to do when we want to run and also do other workouts! It’s so much nicer to run when there’s no wind.

Great week back! This was good for me when to read because I am so inconsistent with incorporating yoga -you’ve motivated me to prioritize it this week!

Thanks! I hope we can both stick with it:)

It’s definitely hard to change up my workout routine. Once I find something I like then I don’t really want to change it. I love that the temperature is warm in the afternoon but I could use some warm weather in the morning for those runs. I’ll take what I can get though.

Hopefully the mornings will be warmer soon! Agreed- I’ll take what I can get!

I’m a creature of habit as well so I totally understand how you feel! It’s hard for me to switch things up but I still try to do it from time to time. Great job still including your yoga this week! That’s one thing that I am so inconsistent about!

It’s hard to do different workouts when you are used to doing the same things week after week!

Great job with the yoga! It’s usually the first thing to drop for me, but it’s so important to keep runners healthy. I’m inspired by you!

    Great week 🙂

Great job with your workouts! I give you so much credit for running on the mill. I can only get a few miles in and then I get really antsy.
Right now, I’m just looking forward to getting in to a workout routine lol! I think after the dust settles in a few weeks, my schedule should improve.

I’ve definitely just gotten used to running on the treadmill! Plus it’s still kind of new. I’m sure the novelty will wear off eventually!

Yoga makes a big difference in my running so I try to go once per week. More than that and I get bored. Honestly though it’s the first thing to get cut if I’m busy just because Running doesn’t require you to sign up for a class at a certain time. Hooray for spring finally getting here

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 23, 2018 at 6:49 pm

Its the first things for me to get cut too! And I don’t even go to classes- I just use videos I find online!

I can relate. Once we get in a groove it’s tough to break out. I’ve wanted to get back to my spin class for awhile now and it’s just not happening. It’s almost time to hit the roads on my bike. Will see if that happens. Ha!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 23, 2018 at 6:50 pm

It’s not a bad thing to get into a groove but I also think its good to change things up once in awhile!

I finally stuck with yoga after years of trying and then not doing it for months. I like doing yoga at home, mostly as a way to stretch and breathe through stress.

I definitely love having my routines, but I do enjoy mixing things up every now and then! I used to try to do yoga twice a week and it really made a difference…I’ve really slacked on that the past month and miss it.

The weather is finally acting spring-like here! It has definitely lifted my spirits, I just wish they could stay warm (but not too hot!)!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 23, 2018 at 6:51 pm

I really hope it stays warm too. I definitely notice difference when I stick with yoga, but its always the first to go when I get busy!

I enjoy variety, so I have my basic routine but I like to change up my routes, mileage, workouts, and such. We have some nice warm weather this week – it’s in the 60s most days!

      April 23, 2018 at 6:52 pm

Sounds like you have had some perfect running weather! It’s nice to keep variety in workouts even if you follow pretty much the same schedule each week.

Wendy clued me in to Five Parks Yoga. Some routines are geared for strengthening muscles and some for stretching/recovering muscles. She really has a great mix and short options too if you’re pressed for time. I know you were looking to do something a little different, but having a routine isn’t such a bad thing. And it’s much better than have no routine at all! I think you’ll be feel more inspired when the weather improves anyway. Thanks for linking!

I recently checked out Five Parks Yoga thanks to Wendy! They do have some great options. I think I will be using those videos quite a bit if I do manage to keep up with the yoga!

I don’t do yoga but I try to do pilates once a week. I find it really helps with my running. Having said that I haven’t been in a few weeks. When I fall off the pilates wagon, for some reason it takes forever to get back on it!

It’s so much easier to be consistent about things like that when they are a habit, right?!

It’s always worth it to get out there on a cold It’s always worth it to get out there on a cold Sunday morning when you get to see the sunrise. (Even if you were woken up 5 times the night before, but let’s not talk about that) 8 miles for my longest postpartum run! Are you getting out for a run this morning?

Not sure if it was the colder weather, the shoes, Not sure if it was the colder weather, the shoes, or the extra carbs but I ran 4 miles at a much faster than usual pace. Which was good because I got out 2 hours later than planned and needed to cut my run short to get back to the chaos of my house. At least I got to run in the daylight! (But I forgot my sunglasses because when I was originally dressed to go I had my headlamp and reflective vest on). Now, it’s time for more coffee!

Right now lifting is more important than ever for me to help build back postpartum and to support my lifestyle of constantly nursing and carrying around a baby and all the stuff that kids require every day. What’s your main reason for strength training? #runnerswholift #runstrong #postpartumfitness #runhappyteam
