August Runfessions {Friday Five}

Yay for Friday! But tell me, how is it the last Friday of August already? I feel like summer just started and I’m not ready for it to be over. Schools opened here on Wednesday so it definitely feels like fall is beginning. This has been an interesting month with running, but progress has been made, and I’ve been out there. So I might as well share some August runfessions, right?

August Runfessions {Friday Five}

1) Hiding Deer

Over the past few weeks I have been seeing deer when I am out running (as usual) but lately it seems like they are hiding. I’ll turn a corner and one will be just standing in some trees/bushes. I have to admit they take me by surprise and I get a little nervous running that close to them without realizing it.

August runfessions: hiding deer

2) Changes in routine

As I was going through my old posts last week when I wrote about my 3 year blogging anniversary, it was so crazy to see the workout schedule I used to be able to keep. I was easily running 30-40 miles a week, plus taking a few body pump classes and yoga at the studio. Now I feel like I barely have time to get in an hour workout in the morning! I also don’t feel like I would have the energy to do all that. Things sure have changed!

3) Boring running routes

I also need to runfess that my running routes have been extremely boring lately. I just circle the same areas of my neighborhood and haven’t gone outside a mile radius from my house in months. I guess I’m nervous something will start hurting and I’ll have to walk all the way home?

4) Running extremes

I definitely go back and forth between extremes, because one minute I am nervous about not being able to finish a 2 mile run and the next minute I am feeling invincible, like I should be able to do a long run and start training for a marathon. Don’t worry, these are only passing thoughts that don’t last for long.

5) Sweaty clothes

After my run last Saturday, I didn’t change out of my running clothes until 3:30pm. (I ran at like 7am). Not sure how the day got away from me…I drank coffee outside, did some meal prep, then laid outside reading for a bit. I guess when you only run/walk for 30 minutes you don’t get too sweaty….

As I said on Instagram last weekend, I truly appreciate every day that I get to run. So I’ll take all the sneaky deer, the boring loops of my neighborhood, and the sweaty clothes to be able to be out there.

  • What are your August runfessions?
  • Do you run the same routes every day or do you change it up?
  • How long do you wait to shower after you run?

I wouldtotally freak if I saw a deer while running. they freak me out on fire island! I know they scatter Suffolk county but the likelihood of encountering one in my neighborhood is rare. I jump from the squirrels sometimes! lol. school doesn’t start here until after labor day! my running route has been boring me too and I don’t get bored often. I can’t change it during the week but have thought about switching things up for my long run.

      August 26, 2016 at 7:45 pm

I was always so used to school starting after labor day and it seems like here it just gets earlier and earlier. The weeks when schools were closed just went by SO fast!

Ha, I’ve been known to stay in my running clothes much longer than I should! I am surprised I haven’t seen many deer at all this summer while I’ve run.

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:29 pm

I will see them like every day for a few weeks and then not again for awhile. I always wonder where they go!

I runfess that I am NOT excited about the fact that it is noticeably darker out right now (asscrack of dawn) than it was a few weeks ago. NOT OK. And sometimes I’m in my workout clothes for hours (especially if I don’t have time to change before clients) #oops

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:29 pm

After my run this morning I was thinking how nice it would be to wear workout clothes to work. I wouldn’t even mind if they were a little sweaty.

  4. Wendy@Taking the Long Way Home says

    August 26, 2016 at 7:12 am

I try to shower ASAP after I run, especially this time of year. Sometimes tho, that shower doesn’t happen for a while…

I was thinking back to last summer when I was working FT, marathon training, and blogging 4x/week. How the heck did I do all that?

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:30 pm

Somehow we make it work I guess! Now I can barely fit in a 30 minute run before work, but last year I was doing 10 miles before 6:45am. I guess we figure out how to shift around our priorities when we need to.

I LOVE your patio furniture!!! When I’m sore or hurting, I don’t like to stray too far either – just in case..

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:31 pm

Thank you! I will be posting about some of the patio furniture drama next week…

I feel very similar about my runs. Sometimes I can barely make it one mile without dying and then the next week I feel like I could run forever. I think it’s the humidity!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:31 pm

The humidity really does affect how our runs feel! It was nice this week to get a reprieve from it for a few days.

    August 26, 2016 at 9:14 am

A few deer jumped out at me last week and I was nervous until I realized they were deer and not some creeper in the bushes. What gets me is when snakes cross the trail on a couple of my routes. I know they’re harmless but still they creep me out!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:32 pm

Oh I would definitely be creeped out by snakes! I havent seen one here and I hope I never do!

  8. Lesley says

    August 26, 2016 at 9:15 am

30 minutes down here and I’m sweating up a storm. No way I could wait a whole day to shower :-p I do run routes close to my apartment, or keep close to where I park my car because I do fear something will start hurting. I need to get away from that mindset, but I also want to make sure things won’t start hurting either.

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:32 pm

There are definitely days when I start sweating just from stepping outside. Luckily last Saturday was not one of those days!

  9. Suzy says

    August 26, 2016 at 9:18 am

I always run the same routes because I don’t like wearing my Garmin (I get too obsessive over pace). And I shower as SOON as I walk through the door because it’s imperative that my vajayjay stay in top notch condition. 🙂

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:34 pm

I am way too addicted to my garmin, although I havent been looking at my pace at all lately…which is really good because its so much slower than what it was before I got hurt.

  10. Rachael @ Catch me if you can says

    August 26, 2016 at 9:41 am

you must think my routes are the worst then because every run is the same route in my neighborhood (unless Im traveling). i like to know exactly how far Im going and it helps me guage my time. i used to run with a running group but my saturday mornings are too full and i can run again with them until october 🙁 that sunrise picture is beautiful!!!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:35 pm

I usually don’t mind similar routes but lately I feel like I literally do the same block over and over. Thats too bad what you won’t be able to run with your group for awhile!

  11. Sarah @pickyrunner says

    August 26, 2016 at 10:06 am

On work days, I do shower immediately post-run because I’m in a huge rush to get to my office. But on weekends, I’ll wait HOURS sometimes, which isn’t good. I do run the same routes every day, but thanks to NP I’ve been forced to explore a bit more, so I’m branching out from the days where I only ran the promenade in Baltimore!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:36 pm

I really miss the promenade. Once Im back to running more I need to get down there for a run, especially in the fall!
I always shower right after I run during the week too because of the rush to get out the door to work.

  12. Ana says

    August 26, 2016 at 10:17 am

Deer on runs scare me too. I see them often on one of my running routes.

“I truly appreciate every day that I get to run” << This sentence is awesome! made me smile!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:36 pm

      Glad you liked it!

  13. Courtney @ Eat Pray Run DC says

    August 26, 2016 at 10:26 am

I’ve had some deer come out and terrify me while running solo. I know they are harmless but it still freaked me out, so I hear you on that!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:37 pm

They are just so surprising at times! It’s crazy how close they will come to people and don’t seem scared at all.

  14. Marcia says

    August 26, 2016 at 10:52 am

I was at a neighborhood party last weekend and we got to talking about another runner in the neighborhood who everyone knew exactly her time schedule and route. She runs with a big dog so I guess it’s all good. I think I saw a deer attack on Youtube that always reminds me not to get too close. Seems like the deer don’t much care anymore. Thanks for linking!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:39 pm

There is a runner I see every day in the same place when Im driving to work. Its a main road so I guess its ok but its probably better to change things up as much as possible! Oh no, I didn’t think that deer attacked people! I’ll definitely steer clear of them as much as possible.

  15. Meredith says

    August 26, 2016 at 10:56 am

I can leave my house and run straight down the street I live on for about a mile and a half and there’s not traffic / intersections. When I’m feeling super lazy (like every Thursday lately) I just run back and forth down the same street.

Will you be at the Chuck12 next wee?

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:40 pm

I think it’s nice to have routes like that for when you just need to run and not think about where to go.
I won’t be at Chuck 12- I signed up with the B3 series but then I realized I would be away that weekend….I’m not in any sort of shape to run 12 miles anyway!

  16. Mar @ Mar on the Run says

    August 26, 2016 at 11:03 am

the deer in DC are everywhere! They have no cares in the world but still always freak me out when they’re just grazing. I think as times passes are bodies just change. An adjustment I’m wworking on with my running for sure.

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:40 pm

Agreed, I think it’s just important to accept our limits and do what we can!

  17. Megan @ Meg Go Run says

    August 26, 2016 at 11:05 am

I have been doing boring loops for about 3 yrs now! It started out because of Paul’s health condition. Now I am just lazy and don’t feel like venturing far!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:41 pm

Whatever works, right? I don’t mind bigger loops. These loops are like a half a mile, which I guess is ok because I’m only doing like 2 miles total.

  18. Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says

    August 26, 2016 at 3:40 pm

I might stay in a running skirt all day, but if I stay in the top I get chilled — even in the summer! Yes, i sweat that much.

I run in my neighborhood a LOT (not to mention walk the dogs there), but it just takes up less time. And right now Bandit sucks up so much time (but it’s getting better).

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:43 pm

I actually get cold in my running clothes too- not so much in the summer though- but for some reason last weekend that didn’t happen. Maybe because I didnt sweat much and was moving around cooking and cleaning?

  19. Lindsay Loves Running says

    August 26, 2016 at 7:17 pm

I have been having a similar issue with my routes. I am a creature of habit and tend to keep going back to my reliable routes all the time, but that does get a little boring. I’m trying to find some new people to run with who can introduce me to some new places to run! On showering, I like to shower right away unless I didn’t really sweat OR I have sweaty activities to do after my run. Great post (as always) and love the pics!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 26, 2016 at 7:43 pm

Usually I have about 3-4 go to routes which is good enough to keep things interesting I think. I can’t wait to feel confident enough to get away from my neighborhood again!

  20. Mary Beth Jackson says

    August 27, 2016 at 2:17 pm

During the week I do run the same route over and over, but it is dark so I feel safe 🙂

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 27, 2016 at 3:00 pm

It’s nice to have close places to run nearby when it’s dark out!

  21. Coco says

    August 27, 2016 at 8:11 pm

I’ve got about three different running routes from my neighborhood, but I make the most of them by running the loops in different directions or adding different “spurs” depending on how much time/energy I have. It’s been so humid lately, I’ve had to shower right after my runs — even before my coffee!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 28, 2016 at 4:05 pm

There have been a few runs where I also needed to shower immediately! I guess last week it was just cooler and I was able to get away with waiting a while.

  22. [email protected] says

    August 28, 2016 at 8:36 pm

I often wonder how one run I can’t hardly make a 12 mm pace for one dang mile then I get with a friend and can run 6 miles just over 10 mm. It’s crazy. I too have been known to stay in my running clothes all day. Or as long as no one is around me I think I stink pretty bad.

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 29, 2016 at 7:28 pm

Running is so weird like that, how it can feel so different from one day to the next.

  23. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says

    August 29, 2016 at 11:42 am

Now that I’m in a new neighborhood, I’ve been playing around with different running routes. On Saturday I went for a run on a trail and saw a deer and it really freaked me out – it was huge! So that’s been an adjustment. I’m glad you’re able to get back to running, and even though you’re not going out as far as you were, progress is always a good thing!

    • Lisa @ Running Out Of Wine says

      August 29, 2016 at 7:35 pm

I am so used to seeing deer all the time now! I still get caught off-guard sometimes though:)

19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 to 19 miles! 7 on the treadmill, 12 outside, 1,272 total feet of elevation gain. Amazing weather. Listened to Life of a Showgirl on the treadmill and had some podcasts saved for my outside run but couldn’t get my headphones to connect. This was challenging by the end and I kept thinking how hard it would be if I needed to run another 7 miles today (and all miles at a faster pace) but this is why we train.
