Going Back Up The Weather Rollercoaster

Remember how last week I was complaining that we skipped fall and went right to winter? Well now we’re back to almost summer-like weather. We did have some nice fall mornings this week and even some 60 degree mornings and 70 degree days. Between the weather rollercoaster and the time change it was a confusing week. But it did make for some good running weather!

Remember how last week I was complaining that we skipped fall and went right to winter? Well now we're back to almost summer-like weather. We did have some nice fall mornings this week and even some 60 degree mornings and 70 degree days. Between that weather and the time change it was a confusing week. But it did make for some good running weather!

Weekly Run Down: Going Back Up The Weather Rollercoaster

Monday: 6 Miles with 1 minute hard/2 minute easy

I got in some faster running and it felt good! I also tried out my new GetVizy vest. So far it’s working out really well! You can save 10% using the code MILEBYMILE (affiliate link).

Tuesday: Strength Training and 20 minutes spinning

Just another day spinning and lifting. Nothing exciting here!

Wednesday: 5 Mile Run

Temps were in the high 40s for this run which felt great! I was also really feeling my glutes for some reason (but I love that feeling).

5 miles

Thursday: Strength Training and 3 Miles

I did a strength workout and then got outside for 3 miles. It was almost 60 degrees at 5:30 am! I was really warm in just a long sleeved t-shirt.

warm run

Friday: Rest Day

Nothing to report here! I worked a half day and then took Grayson to the dentist. We haven’t gone since before COVID and it wasn’t as bad as I expected.

Saturday: 3.6 Stroller Miles

Even though I was up super early I didn’t feel like getting out the door early for a run. So once we were all up and the rain cleared we went out for a stroller run.

family run

Sunday: Planning for 5-7 Miles

I know that’s kind of a big range of miles, but it will depend on how much time I have! (This is also assuming I run solo. If Grayson wants to come it won’t be more than 4 miles.)

DST Adjustment

The time change has really thrown us off around here. I am probably having the hardest time adjusting. All week I’ve been waking up at 3:30 am. (Usually my alarm is set for around 4:30) Grayson had a couple rough days but was back to a routine by the middle of the week. Now I’d really like to get back on a normal sleep schedule!

Fall Rollercoaster

I really can’t believe what a rollercoaster of weather we have had this fall. I like having a mild November/December because then mentally its easier to push through the winter months starting in January. But it looks like it will get cooler again next week, so we’ll see how the rest of 2021 plays out!

I found myself wanting to get up too early for a couple of days but things adjusted pretty quickly. Weren’t those few days of “warm” weather nice Sadly I think they’re gone for awhile now.

I keep thinking the warm days are gone and then they return! So I guess we’ll see what happens this time. I’ve been going to sleep at my (new) normal time all week so Im not sure why the early wake ups are still happening!

Our weather roller coaster had us on a steep downhill once Wednesday mid-morning arrived. UGH I’ll just leave it at that, LOL. DST isn’t usually a big deal for me, but my sleep schedule isn’t too stable to begin with …

Usually I don’t mind falling back, but this year has been hard! Not sure why!

I have been waking up earlier than I need to but sometimes I can fall back to sleep. I figure another week and I will be good. I am loving the cooler temps this week. Grayson is too cute!

One morning I woke up and like 2 something, finally fell back to sleep around 3:30, and then was tired when my alarm went off. I guess the theme has been that I’ve just been tired all week!

I love feeling my glutes too–they’ve been getting really lazy since my injury.
The weather has definitely taken a turn this week and I literally felt it in my bones. Hoping it all settles down.

That’s frustrating! This week doesn’t look too cold here. I hope things even out for a bit now.

That’s so crazy- some people had snow and you had such mild temps. Well, it sounds like you enjoyed it!
Oof- waking up at 3:30 sounds rough. The couple days I tried to sleep a little later (like today) were foiled by the fact that it was already getting light out at 6 am. Other than that, I didn’t have a problem with the time change. But I don’t have a toddler, so… yeah.

I don’t really mind waking up at 3:30 when I have a reason to. Buy day after day its been getting to me. (And then some days like today he is up at 4:30.) I guess I just miss being in control of my own sleep lol.

We were warmer for a while, but no 60 early in the morning. I’m lucky I can usually wait til later in the day to run if I want to!

Still no snow though, and that always makes me happy.

Good job juggling your workouts, Lisa!

      November 14, 2021 at 2:29 pm

We haven’t had any signs of snow yet either. I bet it will come out of nowhere soon though!

The weather has been a roller coaster. From t-shirt weather on Wednesday to gloves today!

I didn’t mind waking up at 4:30 on Monday, but 3:30 is rough. I hope your body is adjusted to the time change now.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 14, 2021 at 2:30 pm

4:30 is my average wake up time and I don’t mind it. I don’t even mind 330 once or twice a week when I need to get in a long run or double workout. But day after day it has worn me out!

I love sore glutes from strength! I love how you continue to diligently incorporate strength into your training, very impressive!

DST was tough on our dogs, especially Ruth. She was ready for breakfast at 4:30 am instead of 5:30 🙂 I think she’s adjusting though! I’m sure its harder with kids than pets!

    You’ve had some wild weather!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2021 at 4:27 am

I’ve heard so many people say how tough DST is on their pets. I bet its similar to kids! Getting woken up an earlier than you need to be is never fun.

My body clock is wildly off – hopefully this week it will settle down a bit.

The weather really has been all over the place, but I am grateful to not have snow yet. I keep seeing predictions that we are in for a very snowy winter!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2021 at 4:33 am

Oh really? I hadn’t heard that! I hope the bad weather waits until after the holidays. I could use a few more weeks of mild weather.

  10. Jenn says

    November 14, 2021 at 9:28 pm

We are also having some crazy weather. It was freezing, then it was storming, then it was sort of humid and muggy, and now we are back to freezing again.

Love your stroller runs. I bet G is loving them, even if it is a little cold.

He always wants to come now but then once we’re out running he will start asking to get out. Considering he is almost 3 I’m just happy to still be able to run with him in there at all!

  11. Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says

    November 15, 2021 at 8:05 am

My sleep and eating schedule has been so off! I’ve been waking up an hour earlier and going to bed earlier too. Luckily for me an hour earlier is 6am instead of 7 so it’s not too too early. I don’t work until 10am so I don’t have an early alarm unless I plan to get a workout in the morning.

Last week we did have a couple of warmer days and this weekend looks like it’ll be back to ‘fall’ like temps instead of the chilly winter weather we got earlier. I don’t mind either- as long as it doesn’t get back up to the 80s I’m good!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2021 at 7:46 pm

Whats weird is that all week I’ve been going to bed at my normal time, so I feel like by now I should have started to sleep to my normal time again!

  12. Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says

    November 15, 2021 at 1:04 pm

DST wasn’t really a thing at all for me, but I do remember it being rough when my kids were young! It seemed like the longest day ever!! We got some snow on Sunday (yesterday) but I think the rest of the week might be rain and gloom around here. Oh joy! Since I won’t be running much this week I haven’t even looked at the forecast much.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2021 at 7:47 pm

This looks like another weird week of weather for us. I guess its kind of nice that its not constantly cold yet!

  13. Kim G says

    November 15, 2021 at 3:43 pm

The weather here was a little wacky too. We had nice warm-ish weather but then we also have a hail and rain storm on Saturday afternoon, lol.

DST has completely messed with my sleep so far – and I’m not a great sleeper to begin with so it’s been a struggle.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 15, 2021 at 7:48 pm

Its been so hard to adjust! I don’t remember having this much trouble in past years.

  14. Darlene S. Cardillo says

    November 15, 2021 at 8:38 pm

Yes. DST messes with my sleep. I wake up too early. I could run but I don’t.

Instead I have deal with running in the dark after work or squeeze short run at lunch.

    Can’t wait until March. Lol

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      November 16, 2021 at 4:22 am

As you know I run in the morning anyway, but when I wake up too early I’m so tired throughout the day!

Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of n Would it even be race week if I wasn’t a ball of nerves and not able to sleep? This is my first big marathon in 10 years, my first time traveling to a race in 10 years, and my first time spending the night away from my kids. And of course I’m tapering so I can’t run off the nerves 🙃 #marathontraining #taper #richmondmarathon
Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definit Looked like fall, felt like summer 🍁 I was definitely overdressed for this run but it was nice to not wear gloves or a headband! This was the run I needed a week before my marathon. After last week’s disaster of a long run it felt great to just run an easy 10 miles. (And these days 10 miles feels like nothing). I think I figured out the fueling and shoes 🤞so nothing left to do but take it easy, carb load, and get in the right mindset! Is it unseasonably warm where you are?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to b Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!
