A Crazy Week and First Race of the Year

The past few weeks have involved quite a bit of traveling, but this weekend I was finally home. I was excited to run my first race of the year on Saturday (a 10k) and also spend some time relaxing and catching up on things I haven’t done on the weekends when I was away. However, life always has other plans, right?

I was exhausted during the first few days of the week. I blame this on not getting enough sleep over the weekend (I stayed up later but still couldn’t sleep in much later than usual). I didn’t start feeling back to normal until Thursday. I also think the weather made the first few days of the week a struggle with the rainy mornings. Once the spring weather broke through at the end of the week I immediately felt a little better!

First I’ll just share my workouts for the week- which were much lighter than usual. I took 3 full rest days! I definitely think I needed it. I could have run Sunday, but wanted to rest up and move into this new week feeling refreshed.

weekly workout recap

Monday: Rest, walk in the evening

Tuesday: 4 miles with 6 hill repeats at the end, core and hip exercises

Wednesday: Total body strength training (did you see this circuit workout I shared last week?)

Thursday: 4 easy miles, core and hip exercises

thursday

Friday: Rest

Saturday: 1 mile warm up plus Sole of the City 10k (7.2 miles total), plus lots of walking- my vivofit measured 14.75 miles for the day!

sole of the city

Sunday: Rest, walk in the evening

Total: 15.2 miles

Walked: 22.3    Push-ups: 3 days

Yearly Total: 658.5/2016

I had great intentions to go grocery shopping after work on Friday so that I could enjoy the weekend (and also because we would be racing Saturday morning when I usually make a trip to Trader Joe’s). As I drove to pick up Rob, I noticed a weird noise coming from my car- never a good thing especially because we only have one car! Rob noticed it too and as we drove home he opened the window and it was really bad. Of course this sort of thing happens on a Friday night!

After getting it looked at, we were told it was the brake pads and that they “may or may not be able to replace them on Saturday”. We were thinking we would have to skip the race to have to deal with the car stuff. After some strategizing we decided to bring it to a mechanic in the city and take our chances that it would get done that day. This meant we were able to drop it off at 8am and walk to the race.

As I was enjoying my post-race beer I got the call about the work that needed to be done and cost– always fun to deal with car stuff. It wouldn’t be ready until later in the afternoon, so we decided to walk to the harbor for lunch, take an uber home, and then uber back down later to pick it up. Traffic was crazy so this process took much longer than it should have. I did manage to sneak in a quick nap in between all this!

You are probably wondering about this race I mentioned. I am planning to write a recap this week, but as of right now my official results are missing. We got an E-mail the afternoon of the race that there were some issues with the timing system, so I am trying to get that worked out. My unofficial time was a 46:58 which was about a 33 second PR, so I was pretty happy about that!

Oh my! What a morning! Of course your car had to act up on a day you needed to be somewhere. Glad you were able to still do your race. I bet you were tired after the race and all that walking around that day.

      April 18, 2016 at 7:29 pm

Stuff like that always happens on the worst days, right? And yes, it was a very exhausting day!

Hey, a PR is a PR! And maybe all the stress and adrenaline gave you that extra boost, lol. But then after that and the walking…. I would have crashed and burned! Great job!

      April 18, 2016 at 7:30 pm

I totally did crash and burn after! I napped both Saturday and Sunday, and got lots of sleep Saturday night. I definitely needed the rest day on Sunday!

Congrats on the unofficial PR! I am sure once the results come in it will be an official PR. It might even be more of one as we usually forget to pause our Garmins for a second or two! Way to go!

Adam has been dealing with car trouble lately. His car has been in the shop for a simple repair for almost three weeks now! Luckily he works from home so it hasn’t been too much of an issue, but three weeks is definitely getting excessive. He said he thinks they are putting off working on his car because the place is a certified Rolls Royce repair shop and he just has a Scion, haha!

Three weeks is a long time to go without a car! I hope it gets worked out soon!

Congrats on your first race of the year and an unofficial PR! That’s frustrating about all the car stuff. One of our cars was rear ended in March and spent about three weeks in the shop—so annoying to deal with the insurance, repairs, etc.

    • [email protected] says

      April 18, 2016 at 7:31 pm

Oh that stuff is so annoying too! I was really grateful they were able to get everything done in one day.

    April 18, 2016 at 8:51 am

Dang I would be pissed if they lost my race results! But it sounds like at least you know you PR’ed so that is awesome!!!

I hate car stuff. We only have one car as well because Paul doesn’t drive, so it is always tricky when the car needs work done or needs inspected… like, I NEED my car to get to work! It’s not like I live in the city and can take public transportation!

    • [email protected] says

      April 18, 2016 at 7:31 pm

It was so much easier when we lived in the city and could walk places- including the mechanic! But at least we had Uber as an option.

My car is 14 years old, so it’s not uncommon that something old needs to be replaced. It sucks, but I’d personally rather deal with paying for small things in the hopes that my car lasts a bit longer. Congrats on your race!

    • [email protected] says

      April 18, 2016 at 7:32 pm

That’s how I feel too! My car is almost 16 years old and I’m just not ready to invest in a new one.

  8. Suzy says

    April 18, 2016 at 9:55 am

So brutal about the race times! AHHHH! How frustrating. Hopefully that gets worked out really fast, because you’ve got a PR to celebrate! I have a weird noise coming from my steering system, especially when it’s cold. It makes a lot of noise from the outside, and it’s really embarrassing. I heard it’s $1500 to fix. Ugh.

    • [email protected] says

      April 18, 2016 at 7:33 pm

Oh that’s terrible! Mine sounds like something was scraping the ground outside the car but there was nothing visible to us. Apparently the brake pads were so low and that’s what was making the noise. I guess it was better to hear the noise and know to go get it looked at!

Ugh, car troubles always stress me out, even if I just need to renew my inspection at the DMV! Congrats on a 10K PR, that’s awesome!

    • [email protected] says

      April 18, 2016 at 7:34 pm

It definitely stresses me when I don’t know what’s going on with a race (or anything else for that matter…my boyfriend says I need to learn to let go and just throw up my hands at the universe). Congrats on the PR, so awesome!

I love the Sole of the City! And I don’t know if you have worked with Josh from Medstar but I saw him at the finish line. Running it definitely got me in the mood to start racing again! I hope your car problems don’t turn out to be anything major!

  12. Lesley says

    April 18, 2016 at 11:52 am

I had to drop my car off at the dealership this morning for them to check out something. It was doing the same thing at this time last year, so maybe it’s the crazy weather now that my car is getting older? I got a shuttle to work and I’m waiting on the phone call that they’re sending a shuttle to pick me up.

    • [email protected] says

      April 18, 2016 at 7:36 pm

Thats nice that they have a shuttle option! When I took my car to Honda they had a shuttle, but it stopped running so early in the afternoon!

Congratulations on your PR! Changing breaks sucks! We had to have them changed on both cars last fall. My wallet wasn’t happy haha! Now I’m paying attention to how I break, coz I want those suckers to last longer 😀 xoxo

    • [email protected] says

      April 18, 2016 at 7:37 pm

Congrats on the race! Sounds like you did awesome! And yes, if there’s question about whether a race will happen it stresses me out, I feel like over the past years there’s been a fair amount of missedugh races. At least I made it to the marathons though 🙂

    • [email protected] says

      April 19, 2016 at 7:00 pm

It’s definitely better to know for sure about the marathons- that’s not something you would want to decide to run or drop out of at the last minute:)

  17. Marcia says

    April 19, 2016 at 6:43 am

Wow! Sounds like you had an awesome race. Cannot wait to hear more! Sorry about the car. We just went through furnace hell and of course the weather was in the 20s so it got down to 50 in here before it was replaced. Things like that always seem to come out of left field.

    • [email protected] says

      April 19, 2016 at 7:00 pm

Oh that is really annoying! Our AC broke one year in the summer, but I think the furnace would be worse.

I hate feeling like I have to “catch up” after a good, but exhausting weekend. Sounds like Saturday was crazy, but it’s great to hear you had a good race!! That sounds odd about the timing but hopefully that gets worked out. I hear CCR’s events are always so good and to have that happen stinks.

ugh car troubles. luckily it was just break pads, strange noises could be anything! yay on the PR, when you are so fast already 33 seconds is a big deal! For the first time my last half actually didnt get my start time so my official time was off by 5 minutes! luckily it was resolved pretty quickly but that was scary since my fitbit also messed up on me as well. hate it when that happens

    • [email protected] says

      April 19, 2016 at 7:02 pm

Car trouble is such a pain! I recently got a letter from Honda that my car is being recalled…again. Sometime this summer I’m supposed to bring it in to fix the air bags. Thankfully I won’t have to pay for it, but geez…

Congrats on your race! I don’t know what it is but the last couple of races I’ve run have had issues with chip timing. Hopefully you’ll get the official results soon!

    • [email protected] says

      April 20, 2016 at 7:36 pm

I have a Honda too, I hope I don’t also get another recall! (I got one last summer).
Thanks! I ended up getting the official results earlier this week:)

One of our three local race timing companies is horrible about missing people and just getting things wrong in general. They must be cheaper than the other two, that’s all I can figure. Car trouble is so stressful! I’m glad you got it resolved fairly quickly. That’s a great time for your 10k! Congratulations. That’s my least favorite race distance. I need to work on my attitude about them! Ha. Thanks for linking with us Lisa.

    • [email protected] says

      April 22, 2016 at 6:18 am

That’s interesting that the 10k is your least favorite distance! I think I like it more than the 5k. Luckily our results got resolved really quickly…the company that puts on this race and most other races in the area is actually really great about that stuff, so I was surprised that there was an issues at all.

I think with as much traveling as we’ve been doing you would think I’d be use to adapting to the work week. Not. I always start the week off in the negative on sleep.
Wow you did do a lot of walking on Saturday! It’s never fun dealing with Adult stuff an car issues. I hope it works out fine. Great job on your race and a PR!! Woop Woop! Thanks Lisa for your support!

Let them be your reason, not your excuse. I coul Let them be your reason, not your excuse.

I could sit here and tell you how hard it is to train with 2 young kids. How I rarely get a full night’s sleep anymore. How they got me sick the week before my race. How my SI joint just isn’t the same since my pregnancies. But that wouldn’t be fair, because I need to listen to my own advice that I give them about how to keep working hard and that there will always be obstacles to overcome.

After my race on Sunday I was thinking about how my Kindergartner has been working for a special award all year long. Many times he has told me he just wants to give up, because he works so hard for months at a time and still hasn’t earned it. I keep telling him that if he keeps working hard he will earn it, but what’s most important is that he gives his best each and every day. All those good days add up and even if he doesn’t earn the award, it will mean he had a great year.

Don’t I need to take my own advice and remember that all the good training days add up, even if I don’t get the outcome I want on race day? Before my race he kept telling me to do my best, and that he would give me a prize (artwork) even if I don’t win. So maybe all the lessons I am teaching him are starting to pay off? #motherrunner #halfmarathon #frederickrunfest
