How to Dress for Outdoor Runs in Chilly Fall Weather

Many runners are excited to see cooler weather arriving this month. Even though the calendar has said it is fall for several weeks now, many of us have still had unusually warm weather for running. Now that we are finally getting some chilly fall weather (or will be soon) it can be tricky to figure out how to dress for runs. Here are some ideas for running comfortably this fall without feeling too warm or cold on your runs.

Now that we are finally getting some chilly fall weather it can be tricky to figure out how to dress for runs. Here are some ideas for running comfortably this fall without feeling too warm or cold on your runs.

How to Dress for Outdoor Runs in Chilly Fall Weather

Of course this information will depend on where you live. Some runners may already have freezing temperatures in the fall and will need to wear full tights, jackets, and hats. Others may still be able to get away with shorts and t-shirts for more of the season. However, most of us are going to have at least some days where it’s not too hot and not too cold. These days are a bit harder to dress for in order to stay comfortable on an outdoor run.

Underdress for the temperature, but add layers if needed

Remember that you will warm up while you are out running. This is especially true if it’s sunny out and not windy. If it’s warm enough to start with shorts and a t-shirt, you could wear compression socks (or any high socks), and add arm warmers or a long sleeve that you can take off.

Invest in some fall weather running gear

Some of my favorite gear for chilly fall runs are capris and 1/2 zip shirts. These are great transitional items because they will keep you warm without being too heavy. The shirts can be worn with additional layers even as it gets colder out. I continue to wear capris on warmer winter days and for indoor workouts throughout the year.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Brooks Dash 1/2 Zip
Brooks Lux Long Sleeve
Brooks Spark Capri

I also really like having some vests for fall running like the Brooks Shield Hybird Vest. They keep your core warm without being to heavy. Plus, you can take them off if needed.

Don’t forget about your hands and ears

These body parts tend to get cold fast, so it’s worth wearing gloves and a headband which you can always take off if you get warm.

Make sure you can be seen

Fall can also bring darker mornings and evenings, so make sure to wear clothing and reflective gear that helps you be seen. I love the Noxgear vest and chest lamp.

Great tips, Lisa! I especially like the point about underdressing for a run.
I use the rule of thumb to dress as if it was 10 degrees Celsius warmer. My husband never believes me and always dresses to warmly, only to take everything off 10 minutes into the run! 😂

It’s so hard to switch seasons.

    And not overdress.

Layers is the answer for me. I can tie that extra shirt around my waist. Dollar store gloves and arm warmers (knee socks) can be tucked into pockets.

If I wear calf sleeves, I can wear my skirts longer into the fall.

I cannot wait to pull out all of my fall and winter gear! I have already over dressed a few times this week 🙂

It rarely gets cold enough here to go beyond capri length tights and long sleeves. And gloves! And a beanie! Anyway, I’m looking forward to whatever the winter brings. I’m so over the heat!

Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 Yesterday’s’ long run was 16 miles with 6 x 1 mile MP/1 mile easy. I took a few hours of PTO in the morning to do this on the trail because I knew wouldn’t be able to do it this weekend. This was my first time on the trail since my marathon last November. It was nice to be back there and the perfect place to do this kind of long run. It was the kind of run where you start thinking “ok cool I just did a tough MP workout” but then you remember you actually need to run 26 miles in a row at that pace. Luckily there’s still 9 more weeks of training…although that doesn’t really sound like that much!
41 miles for the week and got in 2 strength sessions. Taking it easy this weekend other than chasing the kids around for all their activities! #run #marathontraining #longrun
It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It It’s kind of freeing to not care about pace. It is a little frustrating to have to plan more time for an easy run. But it’s definitely worth it to recover quicker and feel better on workout days! #run #marathongtraining #easyrun
You know marathon training is starting to get real You know marathon training is starting to get real when you start losing track of what training week it is. I had to check my calendar but this was week 6, so 10 weeks to go!

I ran the Charles Street 12 last weekend so this week was all about easy miles and recovering from the race. That went well until I went and ran all the hills yesterday followed by walking around a maze and fun park for 5 hours. I got in some strength and mobility this morning and now I’m back to focusing on recovery!

If you’re training for a race how many weeks do you have left?

15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 9 15 miles, over 1,100 feet of elevation gain, and 91% humidity 🫠 Pretty sure that was harder than my race last weekend, but got it done. Now off to my second workout of the day- taking the kids to an outdoor fun park. RIP to my legs.
What are you up to this weekend?
