It’s Not Time for Iced Coffee Just Yet

Just when the weather seems to be on the upswing, a few more cold days need to sneak themselves in there. I prefer hot coffee most days, but when it warms up I do get a craving for iced coffee. But it’s not time for iced coffee just yet. Its’ still just the beginning on April, after all.

It’s Not Time for Iced Coffee Just Yet

Easter Weekend

I can’t believe that Easter is this Sunday. This feels strange for a few reasons. First, I haven’t been to church in over a year now. Second, it makes me think about Easier last year, when we felt like we had already been dealing with COVID for so long but had no idea what we were in for. Grayson was still so little- getting better at running around and had fun finding eggs on the deck. It was the first holiday that we didn’t see anyone because of quarantine.

Sleep Update

I am happy to report that for the most part, sleep is improving around here! After about 2 months of bad sleep (which happened to line up with his bottom 2 year molars coming in) and once we got through the time change, things started to improve. He still wakes up early, but as long as he is napping I will take it!

As for me, I still have the random middle of the night wake ups and can’t fall back to sleep once I’m up. Last week we forgot to plug in the baby monitor so when the battery got low at 1 am it started beeping. I got up to plug it in and then couldn’t fall back to sleep until almost 3.

VDOT Certification

A few weeks ago I became a certified VDOT running coach! I have read Daniels’ Running Formula a few times and started using the VDOT pacing chart. It had also been almost 7 years since I took the RRCA course so it felt like a good time to get additional certification. I’m trying to decide if I want to start coaching on the VDOT platform. Has anyone used this (either as an athlete or a client)?

Spending More Time Outside

With the (mostly) warmer weather, it’s been so nice to spend more time outside. Last week we cleaned up the deck a little bit. Last summer we were out there every day. Again, it reminded me of how much Grayson has changed in a year. He’s so much more independent now.

A Big Adjustment

So my big news this week is that we are starting Grayson in a toddler pre-school program next week. We were originally going to send him last fall but decided not to because of COVID and I was still working from home. But now it’s getting too hard to work with him around, and he needs more attention than what I can give him while working. I’m also starting to go into the office a few times a week and my mom has some more travel plans this spring, so I will need more childcare.

It’s going to be a big adjustment, but I think it will be good for us all. He’s had no socialization over the last year and I can just tell he is craving new experiences. So he will be going 3 days a week for now, and my mom will still watch him when she can once a week. (I work 4 days a week so on the other day I will be off with him).

coffee

It’s not time for iced coffee just yet, but I’m gonna need some kind of coffee and maybe some wine too!

It is most definitely not iced coffee time yet here either. We’ve been at near record lows and it was in the teens overnight. No thanks! I think G will LOVE preschool! Socialization at that age is everything. Congrats on the VDot Cert!

I hope so! He definitely needs some socialization. Thank you!

We’re not getting together with family for Easter this year, even though my mom is really pushing for it. Since my sister got COVID and my hubs isn’t fully vaccinated, it’s just not a good idea. We’re going to the lake to finish up our project and we’ll do something small up there. I have to take Cocoa to UW Monday morning anyway, so I’m just going to stay until then.

That sounds like a good plan! If its warm enough my parents might stop by and we would hang out outside for a little bit.

Congrats on your new certification! I’ve never heard of that one.

I’m sure it must be a little anxiety provoking sending Grayson to preschool, but I bet the socialization with peers is going to be fantastic for him — and as much as you love him, I’m a sure a little bit of time to do your own work will feel good, too. Good luck!

I always sleep so much better when we switch the time in the Spring. I want Daylight Savings Time year round! But in general I’ve been sleeping better this year, for the most part. Weird, huh?

It will definitely be good for both of us once we get through the initial week or so! That is weird about the sleep- I never really thought about how DST affected me beyond the first few days.

    Congrats on your new certification.

Definitely not ice coffee yet. It snowed here yesterday.

My sleep is up and down.

    Happy Easter.

Congrats on your new cert-I am not familiar with vdot but any new learning is fun. It has also been about 5 years since I got my RRCA cert. That sound great for Grayson! He is going to love being around other kids. So many skills just have to be learned by socializing. I am excited for him and you!

Thanks! Yes, it will definitely be a good thing. I have no idea how he will handle being away from us at first though!

I drink hot coffee all summer, but definitely need it today. I don’t have any plans for Easter except I am a reader for our 8:00 am service. Even though our church is holding it’s first in-person indoor service, I will be doing it via Zoom until I’m vaccinated. I’ve made it this long — no need to risk it now.

That’s pretty exciting about preschool. I’m sure it will be an adjustment, but once you settle in to a new routine I bet it will be great.

      April 2, 2021 at 12:46 pm

I drink hot coffee every day but if I’m out in the summer I might get it iced. Or sometimes later in the day I make an iced coffee at home. Hope the church service goes well!

Congrats on your new certification! My former coach (Mary) uses that platform. I loved all of her workouts! That is so exciting about preschool though I am sure you are nervous about it. I am all for socialization because it is so sad to see kids now with no social skills. I LOVE iced coffee! I can drink it year round.

I know it will be really good for him. When I was working in schools I remember it was so obvious which kindergartners went to PreK and which didn’t. I mean they can catch up but I do think it helps to get that experience at a young age.

Temps turned frigid here too so definitely leaving the iced coffee on hold.

Congrats on your new cert! I’m not familiar with VDot – maybe you can share more in an upcoming post.

How exciting about pre-school! I’m sure it will be a bit of an adjustment but I’m sure your son will enjoy the socialization! Wishing you all a smooth transition.

      April 2, 2021 at 12:48 pm

Thank you! VDOT is based on Jack Daniel’s running formula. It gives training paces based on a recent race time. And yes, starting school will definitely be an adjustment but I think he will like it once he settles in!

Congrats on becoming a certified running coach! :] That’s awesome!

That does sound like a change that’ll need some getting used to (but a positive one – Grayson will probably really appreciate the social aspect :] )! Happy Easter!

Congrats on the VDOT! I’m not a coffee gal (which most people know by now LOL), but I do LOVE my chai latte’s, and I drink them hot, year-round. I try to get outside as much as possible. I even considered doing a short HIIT workout on the deck this morning, but when I took Max outside (at 5:30) and felt the frigid SE wind…I bailed.

I remember when I lived up north (I grew up near Chicago) sometimes it would snow on Easter. So I’m not surprised you’re not ready for iced coffee quite yet!
I know about VDOT but have never used it in a training plan. I’ll be interested to hear your experiences with it.
Good luck with the preschool! He’ll probably love it. And you’ve been leaving him with your mom on a regular basis so it’s not like he’s never been away from you. Hopefully the transition will be smooth.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 2, 2021 at 7:11 pm

That’s true! But he’s been spending time with my mom since he was born so I have no idea how he will do around new people. But thank you!

Congrats on getting your VDOT certification! That will open a bunch of doors for you. Very exciting! I have been having trouble with my sleep pattern too and I don’t even have a little one to blame it on. I have 3 or 4 good nights, then 1 horrible night. Last night, I got 3.5 hours of sleep. Ugh!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 2, 2021 at 7:11 pm

I’m not sure I can even blame my son too much with my sleep issues! It’s usually my own stress that wakes me up and keeps me up.

    Have a happy Easter!

  14. Denise says

    April 2, 2021 at 6:19 pm

Funny you should mention iced coffee since that’s what I’m drinking right now and I haven’t in so long.
I love your deck. Is it fully enclosed?
Easter did seem to sneak up on us. We’re having my sister and daughter over, my step kids and grandkids will not be joining us because of (stupid) COVID.
I think it’s good that Grayson will be around other kids. I’m sure he needs that. Btw, we meant a Grayson at the beach the other day…thought of you.:-)

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 2, 2021 at 7:13 pm

Thank you! Our deck is not fully enclosed. We have one side that opens to the kitchen where we have the grill and a table, and the other end is enclosed with a door off the family room.
That’s so sweet that you thought of us when you met another Grayson!

congrats on your certification! I’ve not heard of VDOT but I am not currently paying much attention to training programs. also congrats on better sleep! though I do feel you on the waking up randomly and not being able to go back to sleep.

it’s definitely. not iced coffee time here. Though YES I have been out more and more and we have had a couple of good weather days, it needs to be quite warm for me to do iced coffee.

good luck with Grayson going to toddler pre-school! I have no experience with this but I’m certain it’s the right decision for everyone.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 3, 2021 at 2:47 pm

Thanks! We have had some warm weather here and there, but it definitely hasn’t been consistent. Usually it needs to be HOT for me to really want iced coffee.

  16. Jenn says

    April 3, 2021 at 10:23 am

I drink iced coffee, even when it’s freezing LOL! I just like it better. We’ve been so fortunate to have been able to spend most of our winter outside. Yay.

No tips, but I hope it goes very smoothly. A started school with VPK – he was an extrovert so he was pretty eager to go.

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 3, 2021 at 2:48 pm

Grayson is not an extrovert, so not sure how he will do. I mean I’m sure he will eventually like it but it might take some time. Its also just so different because we have stayed home SO much thanks to COVID. So this it going to be a totally new experience for him!

  17. Debbie @ Deb Runs says

    April 4, 2021 at 7:45 pm

I’m not much of a hot drink person other than the occasional hot chocolate so I vote for a cold drink!

Yay for Grayson starting pre-school. I’m sure he will love playing with other children!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 4, 2021 at 8:40 pm

I love hot coffee every morning! But once it gets warm out, then later in the day I like a cold drink.
Thanks! I do think he will like it eventually, but it may take some time for him to adjust!

  18. Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says

    April 5, 2021 at 3:56 pm

I definitely prefer iced coffee over hot! Grayson has grown so much! We put E in daycare just after she turned one and I think the biggest adjustment has been her getting sick so often. But the social interaction has been great for her!

    • Lisa @ Mile By Mile says

      April 5, 2021 at 7:52 pm

I’m so worried about how much he will get sick. And with COVID they’re not going to let him go if there is even the slightest sign of a cold (which I get, but its gonna be hard).

Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to Yesterday’s long run was not what I wanted it to be. The plan was to take the day off from work, head to the trail where I could run 10 uninterrupted miles at MP (16 total) and practice my race day fueling while wearing my race day shoes.

What actually happened? All week I was stressed about this run and the condition of the trail. We had lots of rain on Thursday, and Friday was forecasted to be very windy. I tried to get in the best mindset possible, reminding myself that I won’t be able to control the conditions on race day. Meanwhile, I haven’t been sleeping well thanks to my 2 year old waking up every night, and my watch has been basically telling me that I’m losing all my fitness and need a week of recovery.

While I started the run feeling pretty good, after 11 miles (7 at MP) my stomach turned and I almost got sick on the side of the trail. I just couldn’t recover from that. The best I could do was run the rest of the miles easy, and needed some walk breaks. On top of that, my shoe kept rubbing my foot on top and I stopped twice to retie it. This has never happened before and now I’m questioning what shoes I should wear for the race. The trail was also in rough condition with several trees blocking it, lots of wet leaves, and rocks/sticks that I had to look out for.

I just can’t believe how bad I felt for the last 5 miles of this run and I can’t pinpoint the cause. Am I overdoing it with the fueling and can’t handle it on harder effort runs? Was it something I ate recently? The hard part is there’s no time to really try something different before the race, as all I have left is a 10 mile easy run next weekend.

I’m trying to remember that one bad run does not take away from all the good runs this training cycle. I’m using today to reset and move on so I can make the most of my last 2 weeks of training. It’s not the way I wanted my last big long run to go, but I suppose it was good practice for pushing through even when I felt pretty awful.

Who else has had a terrible long run close to your race?

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questi Spent almost every step of this 21 mile run questioning my life choices. Like waking up at 3am to run 12 miles on the treadmill and 9 outside. This was a crazy week with a kid that wasn’t sleeping great and fighting a cold and super busy days at work. My legs were just tired the whole time today. It was really hard to run outside after so many treadmill miles and my pace was much slower than inside.

I reminded myself that this is peak week. It’s supposed to feel hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. I ran 53 miles this week and am not injured. The weather is perfect. I’ve gotten in every planned run of this training cycle so far. I get to do this.

And I managed to finish strong with my last 3 miles the fastest of the (outside) run. I owe that to a solid fueling plan and taking all my gels even when I really didn’t want to.

3 weeks to go until race day!

#running #marathontraining #longrun
Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by Yesterday’s long run was followed immediately by back to back kid activities, so there was no time to post about it. (I ate breakfast in the car and lunch at soccer practice- it was that kind of a day.) I was kind of nervous going in to this run, especially now that I’m getting down to last few key long runs. I had 16 miles with 4 x 2 miles on the plan, which sounded manageable but also challenging. The weather was perfect and I hit all my paces. At the end I got a little confused- thinking I was at 15 miles but I was actually at 14 🙃 Got home and realized I chafed really bad. Another long run down, and another week closer to race day.

Do you ever psych yourself out before long runs?
